BFC 20903 Mechanics of Materials Design, Fabricate and Testing Composite Materials Plates Guidelines 1.

0 GENERAL INSTRUCTION 1.1 1.2 Each group consists of 5 members and group leader is appointed. Design and fabricate a composite plate by using any recycle materials comprising of more than 8 plies (8 layers). As the term composite materials are described, the composite plate should comprise of more than 2 types of materials [any materials, ranging from wood piece, natural fibers, used cloth, etc.]. Thickness of the composite plate should not be larger than 2 mm. (Your reports should include justifications on the material choices (against cost [if recycle materials is used, raw material cost is assumed as RM0), fabrication time, strength, etc). You are free to use any method to assemble all the plies [gluing, heating, etc, but please bear in mind that the laminate interlayer is the most crucial part because it is easy to break!] 1.3 The composite plate will be tested to determine its tensile strength and modulus. The verification will be valued against costs, time, structural strength and unique features [colour, eye-pleasing etc]. Each group should include the cost of constructions, fabrication time and member plate sizes [with engineering justifications] in the final reports. 2.0 Project information Each testing specimen is bounded by the following requirements:Maximum thickness Wide Maximum length Minimum modulus Maximum ply thickness = 2 mm = 20 mm = 200 mm = 10 GPa = 0.25 mm

Each group are required to prepare at least 3 testing specimens. 3.0 PROJECT REPORT Each group is required to submit a project proposal (full report) and video on the week 13th (Before or on May, 15th 2014, Thursday, 3.30 pm). The proposal (report) should include

introduction, choice of materials, concept of composite plate fabricated (use composite material plies mechanics fundamental [i.e., Classical Laminate Plate Theory] and justifications), strength analysis calculations method of fabrications, conclusion, drawing (all view) etc. The fabricated model will be tested in tension [to determine the experimental modulus values and plate ultimate strength] at Materials Laboratory, FKAAS. All groups should obtain the modulus and strength data from other group and discussion is made by comparing all the results datasets. The production, fabrication and testing of the composite plate should be recorded using video camera and store it in the CD.

Note: Marks will be deducted for late submission.

3.1 PRESENTATION 3.1 Each group will present their project through class presentation. Please prepare the PowerPoint slides and video during the presentation.
