OUTLINE
Introduction Introduction to UWB Generation of UWB Introduction to OFDM Introduction of Optical Communication Introduction of UROOF Technology Advantages of UROOF Technology UROOF System UROOF Fundamentals Application of UROOF Technology conclusion

INTRODUCTION
Short range communication in form of WLAN,WPAN
and WBAN Range from Sub-meters to 10s of meters Greater Spectral Efficiency , large Bandwidth systems and low cost per bit is required

UWB technology can satisfy these requirements Presently effective within a range of 2-10m Need to increase Range upto 10-30 m

INTRODUCTION TO UWB
Extremely large bandwidth Regularized by FCC Spectral mask is defined from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz Low peak power is spread over a large badwidth. Bandwidth >20% of Central frequency at a point 10dB down from peak level or RF Bandwidth > 500MHz

GENERATION OF UWB
Two major generating schemes are: Impulse Radio UWB Multiband UWB Impulse Radio UWB Very short duration (ns) pulses(monocycle) No additional carrier is required Multiband UWB Spectrum is split into sub-bands of 528MHz. Each channel comprise of 128 carriers. Carriers are modulated using QPSK on OFDM tones.

INTRODUCTION TO OFDM

A multi-carrier modulation scheme Available bandwidth is divided into sub-bands Each sub-band has its own carrier more robust against inter-symbol interference can be implemented digitally using an inverse discrete Fourier transform and discrete Fourier transform (IDFT/DFT)

INTRODUCTION TO OPTICAL COMMUNICATION

Information coded in form of light signal. Transmitted over an optical fiber or wireless channel High carrier frequencies (~100 THz) in the visible or near-infrared region are used Main advantages are low losses of transmitted power, compatibility with lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers

INTRODUCTION TO UROOF TECHNOLOGY

UWB radio signals are transmitted over Optical Fibers UWB RF signals of several GHz are superimposed on Optical CW Carrier WPAN can be improved by range extension up to 2x to 3x order of magnitude.

ADVANTAGES OF UROOF TECHNOLOGY

Potential of carrying information at bit rates up to 1 Tb/s. Fiber losses are extremely low as compared to other channels. High cost additional components can be avoided. Integration of RF and optical Tx /Rx on a single chip is possible.

UROOF SYSTEM

UROOF FUNDAMENTALS
Conversion from RF to Optical Domain To impress the analog signal on the optical carrier Intensity modulation is widely used Two main method for the intensity modulation are: Direct Modulation External Modulation Conversion from Optical to RF Domain Photodetectors are used. Photodetector should have high sensitivity, fast response, and low noise.

APPLICATIONS OF UROOF TECHNOLOGY

WPAN Range Extension

Very Low Cost Distributed Antenna System(VLDAS) Security and Homeland Applications Capacity Expansion of Hybrid Coax (HFC) Systems Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

CONCLUSION
System presented here based on Multi mode fiber useful for short range applications. Further research must be aimed at using single mode fiber useful for long range applications.
Other aspects of UROOF for further Research: Cost optimization of microwave photonics components Study of best-match UWB technology for UROOF system.
