Course Title: ELEMENTARY ANALYSIS I
Course Credit: 5 units
Course Requirements: 3 x 5 index card (Information Sheet)
5 Long Exams = 4/9 of Final Grade
Midterm Exam = 2/9 of Final Grade, Final Exam = 3/9 of Final Grade

Prerequisites: Math 17

Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, the student is expected to know the following:

• Limits and Continuity of Functions


• Concept of Derivatives and Differentiation Rules for a variety of functions
• Applications of Derivatives in Graph Sketching ( Local and Absolute Extrema of Functions )
• Applications of Derivatives in Solving Word Problems such as Optimization Problems and Related
Rates Problems
• Anti-Derivatives of Basic Functions
• Differential Equations with Separable Variables and some Applications
• Definite Integrals and Areas of bounded plane regions
• Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
• Derivatives and Anti-Derivatives involving Exponential and Logarithmic Functions, Trigonometric
and Hyperbolic Functions
• Derivatives and Anti-Derivatives of Inverse Functions
• Some Indeterminate Forms and the use of L’Hopital’s Rule to evaluate Limits of Indeterminate Forms

Exams:
There will be 5 written Long Exams with a cumulative weight of 4/9 of the Final Grade. Aside from
this, there will be a Midterm Exam that will make up 2/9 of the Final Grade and a Final Exam that will make
up 3/9 of the Final Grade. The passing grade at the end of the semester is 60%. Standard University rules
will be used in determining the Final Grade to be given. Also, submit 1 or 2 bluebooks at least two days
before scheduled Long Exams with your name written at the back at the top-left corner.

Attendance, Participation, Quizzes, Homework:


Extra Bonus points or percentage points will be given from quizzes and homework. These points have
their corresponding merit in the Examinations. Please refer to the table at the end for more information.
Class Policy:
1. If a student is late for more than 25 minutes for a particular class period, then he will be marked
absent for that period. Per University rules, if a student incurs more than 12 absences, then he/she
will be forced to drop the course.
2. There will be no make-up for missed quizzes and unsubmitted homework or homework submitted
past the deadline.
3. If a student misses a Long Exam for a valid reason (requires documentation), then his/her grade for
the missed Long Exam will be the grade of the Final Exam. If a student misses a second Long
Exam, then it is automatically ZERO regardless of the reason. A student who misses an exam for
an invalid reason will have a grade of ZERO for that exam.
4. Cheating, in any form, including copying homework will not be tolerated.
5. Strictly don’t use any electronic gadgets inside the classroom without permission. Turn off all
electronic gadgets when inside the classroom or put them at least in silent mode.
6. Always bring at least one piece of yellow pad and black ballpen every meeting.

CRITERIA

Quizzes Per 10 points earned : + 1% in Long Exam


90% and up for total : + 3% in Final Exam

Homework Per 15 points earned : + 1% in Long Exam


95% and up for total : + 1% in Final Exam
