NODE 3 Balkumari Square

This square is also called as Choe Lachhi Tole which is considered as point of spreading settlement in thecho. This square contains two pati and a sattal. This square is mostly dominant by the architectural style of Balkumari temple.

Present state: The tiles on the roof are not properly managed. Vegetation growth can be seen on the roof. Birds nest can be seen on the corners of the struts. Corner tiles (kun: appa) have been broken. The walls supporting the upper floors are destroying. There is bending of certain portion of the faade. The walls of the facade are bulging out and are deteriorating due to damp rain water and fungus growth in the wall. There are two patah hanging from the top which seems to be unmanaged as it has been broken. Wind bells are hung on the top floors only of which some are missing. The base of the posts, eave boards, doors and windows are also in a state of decay. Parts of windows are missing and the main entrance is of bronze but dark spots can be seen in the door due to lack in maintenance. Chika appa is been used for paving. The level of paving is not uniform due to which water collection at various spots can be seen. Lack of proper drainage system causes problems in the rainy seasons.

Recommendation for intervention To protect the walls from rain, the exterior walls at the plinth are plastered which create an unusual view of temple so, bricks should be exposed by scrapping off the plasters. Instead of plastering, coloring of brick can be done together with the water proofing material. The roofing materials needs restoration and the decayed bricks should be replaced. Vegetation growth on the roof can be seen shall be cleaned, maintained and should be treated so that it will be devoid of vegetative growth. The entrance door of metal shall be prevented from the alcoholic materials which are destructing the door. Some stone slabs in the plinth area have undergone severe damage. So those stone slabs should be reproduced. The struts have also decayed so reproduction of those should also be done not by concrete but by wooden carving. The structural system of the temple should be strengthened in order to prevent it from the probable disasters.

Shift of Two Star Youth club: This club is local club which is mainly dedicated to raise the voice of Cleanliness of Thecho and is located on the sattal. So, this sattal should be used for the function of many activities that is directly related to religious aspect or other common activities. Patis:

Proposed interventions Proper maintenance and cleaning of the temple and its surroundings. Modern structures built around the temple have to be stopped. The temple should be brought under considerations of the related authorities. Involvement of the local people in the conservation process shall be adopted to develop the route as a tourist street, which will have positive impact on the economy of the locals.

Viewing deck: This is a deck to be provided along the side of the Pinga dyo so that it can view the agricultural land, hilly areas, etc. This area is provided to make the break of the heritage walk to the tourist. Pinga Pukhu This pond is totally dried up. So it is required to revive to original state so that it can make attachment to the Pinga dyo.

Upgrade of Thecho Primary School Recently it is upto class 3 which is only one school near to Thecho settlement. No of teachers: 4 No. of students: 45 Though, there are many schools near to the Saraswoti Higher Secondary School, it is needed to upgrade the existing primary school so that children from Thecho can join without crossing the busy traffic road. Less area of playground Less area of classroom spaces Less area for administration Disturbances from local neighborhoods Thecho Primary School should be relocated and playground spaces along with additional spaces should be sufficient.
