Instructiona! Se.uence Students need to know what prefixes, base words, and suffixes are by definition so that they can fill out this hand out which helps them find the morphemes in words. After explaining orphemes to the students hand out the Word Coding handout and ha!e the students begin to fill it out. "irst, instruct them to read the instructions of sections A and then go o!er the first one with them and then gi!e them about #$ minutes to underline all of the base words. After they are finished filling it out go through the %uestions and either ha!e them write the answer on the board or say it out loud. &hen instruct them to read the instructions for section ' and then go o!er the first one with them and then gi!e them about #$ minutes to circle all of the prefixes. (o o!er this the same way you went o!er section A.

&hen instruct them to read the instructions for section C and then go o!er the first one with them and then gi!e them about #$ minutes to put a box around all of the suffixes. (o o!er this section with them the same way as section '.

('aptations/0ariations &he teacher could go o!er the assignment in any way as long as the students understand the right answer and why it is the right answer. As you are going along you could create a poster of the morphemes and write them and what they mean on it.

Instructiona! Se.uence -n the index cards write words with suffixes, root words , and prefixes like) o ,nstruction o .epetiti!e o 'icycle o &ricycle o /nicycle After you write the words on the index cards hand out one or two index cards to each student. Hand out scissors and instruct them to cut out the suffix and* or prefix so that the root word and suffix and*or prefix all ha!e their own pieces. After they are done create a chart on the board that has suffix. Prefix and root word columns and go around and one by one ask the student what their word is and the different parts, as they tell you write them in the correct categories on the board.

&hen instruct students to lay the pieces of the words on their desk and take either the prefix or the suffix and go around the room and look at the other student0s pieces and create as many words as they can and write them down Allow about ten minutes of searching or until they get off task until they return to their desk. Ask them one by one to tell you a word that they found and write them on the board, and break them down into the correct columns.
