Safety Instructions
Read this manual carefully before using Fantom YASE
Fantom YASE has a lot of functions even if the user interface seems to be quite simple. The full power of the software you can only use with the profound knowledge of the features as well as the keyboard and mouse commands.
If you are not really familiar with the use of this software and/or to avoid unexpected results please make backups of your existing data before using the software. Or use formatted (empty) storages for this issue. Fantom YASE supports making backups 28 with a single button click.
Run Fantom YASE on a computer with enough power and appropriate operating system
Here 13 you'll find suggestions for the right Hard- and Software. Make sure that you have installed a Microsoft DirectX 8.1 driver (or above).

Introduction

Software Overview
Fantom YASE controls selected program parameters as well as sample files and mappings for Roland Fantom S/X/G Series workstation. The source data can be Sampler specific sound data (CD-ROM, i.e. AKAI S1000 Sound libraries) as well as internal sound data of the Roland Fantom workstation or external sound files (Fantom YASE exchange format). The software can grab and handle sound data from AKAI S-Series Sampler as well as Roland S-7x Series Sampler. As displayed in the picture below you can get these data directly from CD-ROM without the need of extra drivers or conversion tools.
Inside Fantom YASE 2 there is a generic sampler engine for the handling of all
12
necessary sound parameters as well as sample files. With Fantom YASE you can edit sample data, sample mappings (multi samples) and selected program parameters. The big advantage of this sampler engine is the possibility to import and export several formats, Fantom YASE 2 controls:
Import Formats Microsoft Audio File Format (*.wav) Output Formats Microsoft Audio File Format (*.wav) sample
AKAI S1000 sampler and compatible Fantom S/X (audio data, (audio data, sample mappings, program mappings, program data) data), CD-ROM content AKAI S5000 sampler and compatible Fantom G (audio data, (audio data, sample mappings, program mappings, program data) data) Roland S-7x Series Sampler (audio data, sample mappings, program data), CD-ROM content

Save time
There are a lot of high quality sample libraries on the market. Fantom YASE helps you to include these sounds in your sound setup faster. The time required for creating such a setup can be measured in minutes or hours instead of days.
Introduction
13
Save money
Time is money - as faster you can handle your sound sets as more time you have for the music itself. There is not further need of buying the newest hardware - if you are able to include the newest sound sets into your own gear. With the aid of Fantom YASE - no problem. The only disadvantage of the Roland Fantom S/X/G Series workstation is the lack of user-friendliness in case of importing and handling external sound data. Fantom YASE was developed to remedy this lack and extend your workstation to a real sampler - this fact counts!
3.3
14
Driver Requirements
Microsoft DirectX driver, revision 8.1 or later Fantom YASE 2 plays the audio files with loop information. That requires a "real-time" audio engine like Steinberg's ASIO or an equal high resolution driver. DirectX is a valuable alternative. Normally it is already installed. You can check this via Fantom YASE 2 Options General Settings click the button "?". You don't have this driver installed? No problem, you can get the latest one for free here. Please download the "DirectX End-User Runtime".

Restrictions, Limitations
Fantom YASE was made to improve the work flows for converting and handling of external sound data (samples with their mapping in a program). The software is not a displacement for Roland's Fantom PC-Editor delivered with your workstation. Due to the fact that you make all steps with Fantom YASE offline you cannot directly listen to the end result inside the Fantom (more details here 60 ). Normally you will import and setup the sounds into your workstation storage via Fantom YASE, so that you can listen the program (patch) - this only takes few minutes. The further editing procedure of patches should be made with the aid of Roland's PC-Editor. Fantom YASE imports much more than only samples and mappings. The most important filter settings are imported, too. But you cannot edit the filter parameters after importing them. This wouldn't make sense, because - we still are offline! To edit filter parameters you should hear what you do. Which filter parameters are available for the import (and/or can be considered) you can choose at the global options 85 page. To reduce the disadvantage - to be always "offline" - we implemented a Realtime Player into Fantom YASE, especially to support the very important sample edit procedure "looping". But the sound you listen can slightly (up to extreme) differ from what you will listen at your workstation, because of its additional filters and settings, ... and of course of this reason: The Fantom calculates the tone pitch of the audio files with the aid of the root note information inside the file header. Fantom YASE doesn't have such a pitch algorithm - it always plays the samples without pitching them from the raw data. Means that it could happen that you will hear different tone pitches of the same sound at the PC and at the workstation.

Table 2 - Sound Stages for some sampling workstations
As shown in the table above there are different philosophies of the manufacturers, each has advantages and disadvantages. The biggest differences are in the stage of the "Keygroups". But let's comment on the most important stages...
Tone Layers
You can call the Tone Layers a virtually stage, either in the Program (Tone Layer) or in the Keygroup Stage (Sample Zone). As it name implies via these layers you can lie more than one tone for one key on top of each other - and this for the complete range of your
Reference
57
keyboard. Depending on the workstation concept you can assign much more than one sample to one key this way. In addition to that fact you can switch between these sounds via the velocity of the played key. Means the most important parameter of a Tone Layer is its velocity range! Since you understood this you have the answer why it is so difficult to import i.e. AKAI S1000 sounds into the Fantom. The S1000 defines the velocity switches independently for each Keygroup while the Fantom does this once for a Tone Layer at the Program Stage.
To simplify the sound engineering the musicians used to program the same limit values
58
for velocity switches for the Zones of each Keygroup (i.e. Zone 1 of Keygroup 1 has the same values for the velocity range as Zone 1 of Keygroup 22). Of course there are exceptions. That's why we say that you can import approximately 80%...90% of the Sample Mappings (or Keygroups) of older CD-ROM sounds of AKAI and Roland with the aid of Fantom YASE. Especially Roland S7x sounds have the bigger probability to fail during the conversion because of the flexibility of the S7x concerning the Keygroups.
22,05 kHz, 22,05 kHz, 44,1 kHz 44,1 kHz 24,0 kHz, 44,1 kHz, 48,0 kHz 16bit linear 1 (Mono) 16bit linear 1 (Mono), (Stereo)
A sampling workstation can have a higher internal resolution for the D/A conversion but the effective one is the specification of the files of the sample stage. If you compare the its specification with Audio CD's (44,1KHz@16bit) you'll see that the sampling workstations sound as good as common Audio CD's. If you vigilant read the table above you see only 1 channel (Mono) for the most popular samplers of the past... But they also reproduce stereo sounds, aren't they? Yes. They need to combine 2 Mono-Samples (2 Zones of a Keygroup) with an opposite panorama setting for a stereo sound. That's why a Fantom with 4 Tone-Layers has effective the double amount of Zones in comparison of the samplers S1000 or S7x because of the possibility to route an independent mono sample to the left and to the right channel (per layer).

Fantom YASEs accessible memory of the Fantom S/X is the blue colored part
The intention of Fantom YASE is to bring external sounds as quick as possible into the Fantom. The parameters of table 4 can directly be stored as program data with the related sample mappings and audio files into special prepared Fantom storages 91 . Needless to mention that Fantom YASE also reads these data in order to edit programs, sample mappings and audio files. While programming the values 78 the application is not online to the Fantom even if you use the device as card reader in the storage mode, please refer to limitations 14 (the USER memory of the Fantom-S/X is an external storage, too). After the programming procedure the complete content has to be uploaded while booting the device (or Fantom-G: Project Loading).
Reference
61
Please refer to your Fantom manual how to set up the automatic uploading of external data while booting.
The programming procedure starts with choosing the Fantom storage drive ( Fantom-G: Project Directory) in the sample editor 62 or in the program editor 77 . It always will be finalized with the command "SAVE".
Fantom YASEs accessible memory of the Fantom G is the blue colored part
(3) The Program Import and Export (Fantom YASE Generic File Format)
Fantom YASE exports 84 and imports 83 programs with their samples and sample mappings into a generic file format (*.PRG). This is for backup as well as for reorganization purposes. Exported programs include all parameters of the table 4. The biggest advantage is that you can grab any programs from CD-ROM storages (i.e. from AKAI S1000 sound libraries), export them to the Fantom YASE file format. Once stored it is up to you when you import them to your Fantom.
(5) The Sample Import and Export (Microsoft *.WAV File Format)
Fantom YASE exports
69
and imports
69
62
Microsoft's Wave file specification (*.WAV). The files can be played with every common wave play device, i.e. the PC (assumed that an appropriate sound card is available).
6.3
The sample editor prepares audio wave files (common Microsoft wave files) for the use inside the Fantom as well as for external purposes, i.e. the work with Steinberg WaveLab. The Fantom uses these discrete audio files for the Sample Stage 58 . The files are located at the storage in the sub folder Fantom S/X: Fantom G: "[Root] ROLAND SMPL" "[Project Folder] SMPL".
Reference
63
You do not need to know the sub folders, Fantom YASE handles all these details for you if you choose the Fantom drive/project folder.
What file format is used for the wave file if I click "SAVE"? It depends on where is the destination of the file. If the file is stored into the source drive/path then Fantom YASE uses the common Microsoft wave specification. If you save the file into the destination storage (Fantom drive/project folder) than Fantom YASE uses the Roland wave specification. If you want to know more about the wave file format specification, look here.

Switches "Loop End" as the actual loop point. Shows the zoomed area of the loop end point in (8) 64 , overlapped with the loop start (see picture)
The overlapped view gives you a precise information if the loop will be seamless. A seamless loop means that you do not hear any artefacts or noises when playing the wave and the play cursor enters the loop or it jumps from loop end to loop start again. This requires: (a) The same or approximately the same amplitude at loop start and loop end. (b) An equal or approximately equal trend of the last wave periods before loop start and loop end. Look at the picture above and you see at the diagram (8) 64 an example of a quite seamless loop. The best result you get if you let Fantom YASE search for the optimal loop points.
The cross fading algorithm smoothes the loop. Cross fade is a "blend-in" function for loop start and loop end to prevent artefacts and noises while playing the loop. Normally you have to setup a lot of parameters for a cross fade. Fantom YASE uses a complex analyzing algorithm in the background to assign the appropriate parameters for a convenient cross fading. When starting the automatic loop search via "AUTO", "START" or "END" the analyzing algorithm of Fantom YASE also checks if a cross fade is necessary at all. There are some synthetic waveforms where a cross fade would let the wave sound strange.
66
The quickest way to have a zoomed view at the loop points... ... is to click into the diagram (8). The diagram switches to an overlapped view of the zoomed loop start area and loop end area.

still exact this record with its placeholders... The partials as well as AKAI's key groups included complete filter settings (TVF, TVA, ...) - means that you could define different filter settings for each key! That is not necessary and confusingly. The biggest disadvantage of this philosophy was that the most important filter settings (i.e. cutoff frequency) could only adjusted once per partial, means in the best case: once per key. But the real acoustic sound can change the filter frequency depended on the velocity of playing the key. That's why additional parameters for this filter had to be added, a.s.o. The Fantom let us forget these old issues, because the philosophy switched from vertical assignment of filters (one setting per partial, for 4 zones) to horizontal assignment of filters (one filter per layer, means up to 4 filter per key). If you are interested in the technology of older Roland sampler series, we recommend to enter the excellent Roland-Museum of Paul Fischer (unfortunately only German language available) ...
Facts
The Fantom lets you define 128 multisamples (MS) per storage/project. Each MS can include an assignment of a sample file for each key. For a keyboard of 128 keys it implies that a MS can include up to 128 sample assignments. The possibility of the assignment of MS's are equal to the assignment of samples to tone layers. As an example to tone layer 1 as follows:
Tone Layer 1 Channel Left (Mono) Channel Right Channel Left (Mono) Channel Right Channel Left (Mono) Assigned to ... Mono Sample / MS Result Sound plays the signal at the left and the right channel (mono) Stereo Sample / MS Sound plays the stereo signal, separated at the left and the right channel Mono Sample 1 / MS Fantom S/X: Sound plays 1 the stereo signal, separated at the left and the right channel Fantom G: Not yet Mono Sample 2 / MS implemented for MS (OS1.10, 24.07.2008). Sound plays the 2 MS1 at both channels (mono). Fantom YASE offers a workaround for this issue. Fantom S/X: Sound plays the right channel only Mono or Stereo Fantom G: No Sound Sample 2 / MS 2
Channel Right
An example how multisamples can be assigned to four tone layers shows the following picture. We assigned mono samples of a Syn Strings multisample to layer 1, an acoustic strings multisample (stereo samples) to layer 2. Layer 3 is an acoustic trumpet sound (mono multisamples for the left and the right channel) and a choir sound at layer 4 (mono multisamples for the left and the right channel). With Fantom YASE you have now a very good overview about the virtual "key ranges" and even the empty ranges of the multisamples (as you can see: inside the multisamples is not every key assigned to a sample). You see what sound will effectively be played at what key in a patch. For example the Key C#2 - will only play the sound of layer 2, and this only until a velocity of 92. Afterwards it switches to the sound of layer 1. A pretty good overview, isn't it?

How to delete a key range? To delete a key range it is necessary that the mouse cursor has been moved into this range first, than press "DEL".
Changing the root note of a key range changes the root note of the assigned sample.
This means if you use the sample once again (in another patch, multisample a.s.o.) the root note is changed there, too.
Without this procedure nothing will be stored into the parameter file of the Fantom storage.

The patch editor serves the purpose to create and edit patches (programs). The Fantom uses four so called Tone Layer inside of its patches where samples and multisamples can be assigned to.
What is a patch? The term appears to be an invention of Roland Corp. Japan, too... A patch is a parameter set for the program stage 55 of the Fantom. So please don't be confused if sometimes the patch is called program and vice versa. It is the same. We think that in the past several instrument manufacturers patented even terms like "program" or "patch" in conjunction with their products. The use of "patch" is quite unique, it seems to be a "Roland-term". Fantom YASE uses the term "patch" for a program, too. This because the main purpose of the application is the programming of Roland's Roland Fantom workstation.
Patches can be loaded by importing programs of CD-ROM's (program import from AKAI S1000, Roland S7x) as well as by files (program import from AKAI S5000, Fantom YASE generic program file format). The patch can be loaded from the Fantom, too. But please consider that only a part of all patches are accessible 60 for Fantom YASE. Several parameters 59 of the patch can be edited and stored in two formats (Fantom format, Fantom YASE generic program file format).
Fantom YASE cannot edit all patch parameters. If I edit a patch via Roland's PC-Editor and later load it into Fantom YASE, are any parameters lost? No. Even if Fantom YASE doesn't handle a parameter it keeps it alive. The only possibility to reset any parameters is to "delete" the complete patch (this procedure initializes the patch).

Normally you do not need to care of it because Fantom YASE organized the right value for you. If you really need to know the right setting please refer to the manual of the Fantom.

(4) Choose and (5) Assign a TVA-Envelope for the active Tone Layers
If you use an initialized patch "from the scratch" than the TVA Envelope of the Tones might be not useful, especially natural sounds will sound chopped. Normally it is enough to imprint an envelope template to all active tone layers. That's why we implemented in the version 2.2.1 a simple but extreme powerful Wizardlike Panel to choose and assign a typical TVA-Envelope to all active Tone Layers. Simply select a patch (or use the active patch) and switch with the slider (4) to the typical envelope of the sound, set the Preset Values (Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release and the appropriate Levels) by clicking the button ASSIGN (5). Save the changes.
The TVA-Envelope Wizard only works if a patch is active. It changes the TVA for each Tone Layer, that contains samples and/or multisamples.
If you want to import TVA-Envelopes of an (imported) Patch please set the appropriate import values 86 in the options page.

What is a multisample?
It is an invention of Roland Corp. Japan... A multisample is a mapping of several samples - or let's say - an assignment of samples for the whole key range of the Fantom. It's main purpose is to collect samples with the same parameters (velocity range, filters, tunings, ...). The parameters you set once for each multisample - at the tone layer stage. This means - one multisample (or two - for the left and right channel) for one tone layer.

I want to save a sample to another sample position. There is no function for that issue.
The reason is very simple: The most of the samples at your Fantom device are linked to multisamples and/or patches. If you manually would change the position of the sample the multisample doesn't "notice" that. The result would be a "silent" (or if it links to a wrong sample - a strange) sound.
