Rationale

The sun is the center of the solar system and the sun sustains life on Earth. I believe the students will be interested in learning about something that is relevant to their lives. The students will learn how the energy from the sun is important to them. Unit Objectives

Students should be able to describe ways energy from the sun is used. State and National Standards

Science Grade 3 3.) Describe ways energy from the sun is used. Daily Lesson Plans

Monday Earth. The teacher will give the students the information and provide examples for the students. The foldable will contain the food chain starting with the sun giving off light and heat, Energy from the sun pretest Teacher will pass out a foldable The students and teacher will fill out the foldable about how the sun sustains life on

plants using the light to make food, animals eating the plants for food. Tuesday The teacher and students will discuss renewable and nonrenewable resources Students will provide examples of renewable and nonrenewable resources Students will make an entry in their interactive notebooks Teachers will provide examples of renewable and nonrenewable resources in a discussion

(sun, wind, water, coal, wood, petroleum)

Students and teacher will sort resources into renewable and nonrenewable on a T charts

in the students interactive notebooks Wednesday Teacher will write electromagnetic radiation on the board Teacher will ask what word parts students see in the word electromagnetic Students and teacher will discuss the different rays that reached the Earth from the Sun Teacher and students will discuss how the heat of the sun affects the earth Students will define ultraviolet rays and infrared rays in their interactive notebooks

Thursday Friday Students and teacher will discuss how the Earth sustains life Students will talk about the sun as a renewable resource Students and teacher will discuss the rays emitted from the Sun Energy from the Sun posttest Pre- and Post-Assessment Documents and Data (formative, monitoring, and summative) Date _____________ Students and teacher will review how the energy from the sun is used Students and teacher will discuss the Earths distance from the sun The teacher will compare Earth to Venus and Mars The students and teacher will discuss how the conditions on Earth sustain life
