Managing Risk in Social Media

On December 11, 2013, the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) issued a nal supervisory guidance entitled, Social Media: Consumer Compliance Risk Management Guidance. The Guidance provides insight about how nancial institutions can successfully manage the risks associated with social media usage. The Guidance does not impose any new requirements on nancial institutions; rather, it is designed to help nancial institutions understand how existing risk management requirements and expectations apply to the use of social media. Risk area topics covered in the Guidance include harm to consumers, compliance, legal, operational and reputational due to poor due diligence, oversight, or control on the part of the nancial institution. Suggestions to combat risk areas include, but are not limited to, the following: Express clear communication that is consistent with other information the nancial institution delivers through electronic media and is not misleading. Provide accessible links or direct users to full disclosures and privacy policies. Monitor all direct and indirect social media sites. Be knowledgeable of COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act) and how it relates to the nancial institutions social media activities. Apply professional and ethical correspondence practices via social media direct messaging. Have a plan for addressing the fraudulent use of the nancial institutions brand. To access the complete Guidance provided by the FFIEC, please visit their website www.fec.gov and click on Press Releases from the menu available on their homepage. Find the press release date of December 11, 2013 and click the link to access the press release and the Guidance (PDF document). CUAdvantage leverages compliance information
we obtain through research. In order to make sure compliance is met, we encourage you to consult your personal compliance contact.

If its original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
