A Strategy is Never 'Just a Strategy': Changes in the Global Political Climate make for Stormy Business Times
T oronto, ON With all the recent political and social unrest spanning the globe at the moment, many companiesboth domestic and internationalare finding their businesses unexpectedly affected. According to Sandy Richardson, one of Canada's leading experts in strategic planning and execution, an organization's ability to weather those storms depends on whether their business strategies are built to last. When businesses create and execute their strategies, they often fail to build in a space for the great unknownsfor those problems (or opportunities) that arise for which no one could have accounted. Its one of the biggest issues facing businesses today, and one Sandy is sought out to tackle on a regular basis. There are generally two types of reactions to those unknowns. The first is that an organization is so set in its ways, so blindingly focussed on staying the course, that they have a near panic attack often ending up abandoning their strategy entirelyrarely having positive results, says Richardson, the CEO of JETrichardson Consulting and author of Business Results Revolution. The flipside of that reaction, however, can be just as problematic, On the other side of the coin, many organizations dont even realize that theyve shifted their operations to meet the alterations resulting from one of external forces. And while demonstrating that kind of adaptability is important, if you dont recognize those changes are taking place you may find youve unknowingly deviated from your companys strategy in problematic ways. The most successful companies are able to integrate these two approaches to strategy creation: deliberate and emergent. It means having the single-mindedness to know that you need to see a successful strategy through to its end, while building in a certain amount of flexibility and putting in place systems that allow you to deviate from your strategy without abandoning it altogether.
