Question 3: What have you learned from your feedback?

Our first question was on what the audience felt was the genre of the film. Out of the 28 participants, here the graph shows that 60.71% (17 people) thought that our genre was a Film Noir. Even though it would have been more beneficial had all of the participants thought it was a Film Noir, the next majority chose Romantic Drama, of which our film and trailer specifically portrays a lot of and includes several traits of, and therefore I can see how it could be easily mistaken as this genre. Also, Film Noir isnt an incredibly popular genre in today's cinema, and is something not everyone (unless in the industry) would be aware of. Our sequence could respectably be confused as a black and white Romantic Drama, which is what I would assume the 9 people who selected this option thought. Therefore as an overall, I feel pleased with these results in terms of genre as I feel they are a clear perception in regards to our trailer.

The second question was a simple yes or no answer to whether they would see the film. Again as you can see from our results, 96.43% of them answered yes. Again, it is a shame it isnt 100% yes, but we are satisfied with this result as we are aware that some of the answers could have come from those who arent in our target audience and would therefore be understandable as to why they wouldnt want to watch this film. As the survey is anonymous we will never know whether or not this theory applied to the 2 people who answered no, but if it did it would be a very understandable response.

Question 3 referred to their opinion of what our target audience is. The correct answer (with 15 votes) being our actual target audience is again a good response. However this only won by one person's vote, as shortly behind is the 21-26 demographic with 14 votes. Having done plenty of research into various age demographics and target audiences for films similar to ours and all under the Film Noir genre, we noticed that many of them had a much older demographic. In a bid to update/create a modern Noir, we felt it would be interesting to try and challenge this. By adding younger actors and a stronger Romantic Drama streak through the narrative, we attempted to do so. However, in regards to the responses here, even though we achieved the answer on a wider scale, it would have been more satisfying had the majority answered to what we would have hoped. If we were to go back and create this sequence again in regards to this question alone, I would further emphasise the setting in order to appeal to the younger demographic. In retrospect, the settings we used such as the bar and house, set the scene for an older actor and that could be a reason for the assumed older target audience.

Looking back to our AS production, the feedback we had from that was a lack of adhering to the conventions of an opening title sequence and that it was too similar to a trailer, and therefore our feedback for a question similar to this one was negative. This year with the project being to create a trailer we received a much better evaluation with just 2 people objecting to this. This is the question and answer I feel most proud to have achieved personally, as it is the biggest change in comparison to our work last year.

Presenting Vera as an illusion is something we struggled with at first when creating our trailer, as we didnt want to make it too obvious, but also didnt want to set the trailer up as just another romantic drama. After experimenting with different filters and effects, we chose to present Vera as an illusion prominently in one section - through altering the opacity and layering clips we

were able to create a ghost like effect, of which we then flickered, resuming to the shot of Vera not there. This subtle effect we chose as we felt it created just the right amount of intrigue into whether or not this was the case with her character, and made the assumption that not everyone would notice this detail. Our results adhere to our assumption. Again, I am pleased to see that a vast majority of viewers did notice that Vera was an illusion, and in terms of this question I am also pleased to see a mixed review, as we felt generally an unclear narrative in trailers are what makes them more interesting and would encourage viewers to go and see the film.

As we received 100% of votes on the answer we hoped to get for this question we were convinced that the conversion to black and white worked well. Initially we wanted to create a modern day Film Noir and therefore attempted to do so in colour, focusing on the Film Noir convention of chiaroscuro lighting. However, upon editing our sequence we felt this detail wasnt as obvious as we had wanted it to be and therefore tried a few scenes in black and white. After asking several opinions of this in comparison, the majority vote to make the whole trailer black and white won. Again, for question 7 we received 100% correct votes. I personally felt that the we chose to use for the poster was the effective out of all 3 sections. Similarly to the trailer where we suggested the illusion of Vera, we wanted to suggest mental illness also in a subtle way. We the effect mosaic tiles to depict a shattered image, mimicking that of mental state of mind. of the image most that of Johns chose Johns

In our W magazine cover, we chose to feature our female protagonist and Femme Fatale wearing a red dress, red being synonymous with danger in the classic Film Noir productions. We incorporated the use of gold font as W magazine has featured multiple female actresses on its cover and is synonymous with glamour. Similarly to our magazine cover, in the poster we chose a mustard gold for the majority of the font colour choices, with accents of muted grey for the sub headings and critics names.

protagonist wasnt Vera, we wanted to woman on the cover as we felt we would able to continuously incorporate the traits Film Noir, also how it traditionally was captured in magazines and newspapers. Through using W magazine we were to encapsulate this glamour, and in my personal opinion I feel this works more effectively in regards to our package as a

In regards to this feedback, I feel as though this is a fair reading of peoples opinions, as similarly to question 2, by choosing W magazine we were restricting our target demographic, as men who would be interested in watching the film as it incorporates the mystery of Film Noir, but would be more likely to buy a magazine featuring the production if it was in Esquire as Shutter Island was, with Leonardo DiCaprio on its cover.
