Number of Students 15 INTRODUCTION X X X States purpose of instruction or instructional objectives States rationale for objectives and/or activities Reviews previously taught content or concepts Describes activities in which students will be involved and the purpose of activities X Gives overview or advance organizer Comments Jennifer was responsible for Chapters 9-10 in Iveys text, which included information on focusing the interview, empathic confrontation, and genograms. She asked, via Blackboard, for all students to bring their genograms to class. INSTRUCTIONAL SEGMENT X X X X X X X X X Content is well-structured and sequences New terms are defined/explained Key concepts are emphasized Facts are distinguished from opinions where appropriate Includes appropriate analogies or examples for new information or to make abstract concepts concrete Visuals or handouts help to make content clear Lengthy presentations are divided into recognizable segments or change of activity Clear transitions or mini-summaries conclude each segment Checks for student understanding throughout the lesson and monitors students responses Is encouraging and responsive to student questions and comments Lesson pacing is appropriate for the content of the audience

Comments Jennifer used an advanced organizer (PowerPoint) to organize her lesson with specific segments distinguished by the slides. She emphasized important concepts and related them to her own experiences in both factual and opinion examples. She also encouraged participants to ask questions and make comments throughout the event. APPLICATION OF OBJECTIVES X Gives opportunities for students to apply/practice new knowledge or understandings X Provides structure for how students are to respond (e.g. group work, participation, etc.) X Activities directly support instructional objectives X Follow-up discussion engages students in the key points or concepts related to the instructional objective Comments Jennifer utilized dry erase board and video activities for students to practice new knowledge and skills within small groups and large group. CONCLUSION X Concludes with summary or integration of the presentation X Invites student questions or comments Follows up the presentation by making a transition into a recitation, a followup assignment, or other activity that will allow students to practice the material X Assesses the lesson objectives Comments Although a summary of the lesson was provided, this area could be strengthened. She also assessed the lesson with pre- and post-test surveys. Follow-up plans were not included but excused since she was not responsible for the next lesson. ADDITIONAL EFFECTIVE TEACHER BEHAVIORS X Is well prepared; speaks fluently without hesitation or confusion; materials are prepared X Projects enthusiasm for the material X Maintains eye contact with the students X Speaks at an appropriate pace (neither too fast nor too slow) X Speaks with appropriate voice modulation rather than monotone

X Use appropriate expressions, movements, or gestures Comments Jennifer is a very enthusiastic teacher who connects with students through her warmth and empathy. Although her pace was a little fast initially during the lesson, she slowed the pace to a level that was conducive to student learning. OVERALL ADDITIONAL COMMENTS Jennifers lesson was well organized and executed. Based on an interview with the students following her lesson, they report her strengths as being enthusiastic and easy to relate to, providing positive feedback as well as challenging to their learning and uses media and PowerPoint well in delivering information. Constructively, they reported needing her to provide more wait-time when asking questions and being more confident in relating her own counseling experiences. Although videos are good instructional tools, overuse can be distracting to the purpose. As the observer of her lesson, I concur with these observations. With some slight modifications to lesson planning, Jennifer will be well prepared to teach counseling courses. During this experience, it appears she was able to convey key counseling technique concepts to the students.
