Sanders ENGL 1113: Classification Essay 8 October 2013 Big Army: College ROTC The United States Army is built up of many different parts. There is active duty, National Guard, Reserves, ROTC, and JROTC. Each one has there own variation to make up the U.S. Army as a whole. Any one in these forces could be called upon for deployment in time of war. It is everybodys job to be physically fit and ready for combat at anytime as well as being proficient in his or her own specific job. Active duty isnt for everybody but there other options for people to consider. The U.S. Army active duty is the largest of any U.S. military forces. There are hundreds of careers available, and most can even benefit a person once they are out of the army. The army is composed of two classes, enlisted and officer. A enlisted soldier is more of a ground force or grunt while the officer is the college graduate in charge of the enlisted soldiers. Enlisted jobs tend to seem more fun and appealing, while the officers jobs usually consist of paper work or even getting stuck with a desk job at some point, but not always. Active duty soldiers are the most common form and what most people tend to view the army as. The National Guard is an army force that the general purpose is to help out within the state they reside or any form of domestic emergency. They are classified as a reserve force of the army along with the regular Army Reserves. The National Guard helps in times of need such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and civil disorder. This force can be called upon for temporary or indefinite active duty in time of crisis.

Stokes 2 The U.S. Army Reserve is a force similar to the National Guard but they each have their differences. The Reserves can be called upon for activation when needed and can be deployed as a regular active duty soldier. The Reserves generally see more action then the National Guard. When they are not deployed, as soldiers the Reserves and National Guard are regular citizens and many have regular jobs on the side. The choice to be Reserve or National Guard can be a small way to help out the big army if a person is not looking for a full time job in the active duty army. U.S. Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corp) and JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp) are small units used as the armys last resort in time of war. ROTC is a college program that prepares students to join the Army once they have graduated and earned their degree. JROTC is a high school program that allows students to get a small taste of the army. With these programs it shows young people potential career opportunities and an inside view of what to come if they decide to join the army. They are trained with certain military skills before they even go into the big army. All of these forces do great things for our country. Men and Women serve every day some you may not even realize. A stay at home mom could be a National Guard member on the side, she does her pat to help her country and nobody would know the difference. There are many things different about each force yet they all share a common goal, to defend the United States constitution and serve their country in time of need to guarantee that the U.S. always has its freedom.
