Easter Sunrise Early on Easter morning many gathered for the Sunrise Service at 7:30 am." Marla Hlas planned the meaningful service led by YF. The youth had pre-videotaped a modern-day re-enactment of Holy Week with some movie footage included, also. A delicious breakfast of egg casserole, fruit, breakfast rolls, and drink was served by the Volunteers. ! A brief Memorial Day service at the cemetery to honor veterans and Memorial Day will be held on Sunday, May 25, following a shortened worship service at Chapel. Family members of honored veterans are especially invited during the memorial service to place a ower in memory of their loved one. The Ice Cream Social Committee is cranking out ideas for this year's social which will be Saturday, June 14, at 5:00 pm. Before we hand out assignment sheets, please let us know by Sunday, May 18: 1) ! where you would like to work. 2) ! where you Think you'd like to work, if you have not participated before, and 3) ! if you cannot work on June 14, morning and/or night. If we do not hear from you, we will assign you where we need you.# We encourage all of you to wear a special Chapel purple ICS t-shirt to the Social at 5 pm so that guests can spot you easily, plus it is nice to all be unied! LCA ! The Chapel Ladies Cemetery Aid met Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at the church. President Connie Appelgate opened the meeting. Shirley Svendsen led devotions with two poems about spring and closed with a prayer. ! Roll call, where you met your husband, was answered by six members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was read from the family of Martha Bessman, the Marshall County Food Box, and Corsons Cemetery Restoration and Repair. The treasurers report was presented and placed on le. Vivian LeVier made the motion and Jo Svendsen seconded we pay the bill presented by Kathryn Burt for shut&in gifts. Motion carried. ! Old Business: A running board for our agpoles and a place to store it have been located. We will need to put the ags up on May 23 for Memorial Day May 26. Orlyn Langenbau has been notied about placing Richard Svensdens name on the Veterans Memorial. ! New Business: We need to have more blank name boards for the Veterans ags. Ann Prott will be contacted to see if she can make them. ! We will lose our safety deposit box at the Green Mountain bank when it closes at the end of June. Shirley Svendsen o"ered to keep the three time certicates at her home in her re safe. Vivian LeVier made and Kathryn Burt seconded the motion we have Shirley Svendsen safeguard our copy of the time certicates. Motion carried. ! The second reading of our revised Constitution and By Laws was read by secretary Carolyn Kloster. Vivian LeVier made the motion and Shirley Svendsen seconded we accept the changes. Motion carried. ! Connie Appelgate started a discussion about having a new map of the cemetery made. Vivian and Connie will contact someone to make a map we can mount in the church and possibly at the cemetery. A small directory would be helpful also when visitors need to know where graves are. ! Committee reports: Flags&own at Martha Bessmans funeral. Hiring&Smiths will again be caretakers. Cards &two were sent, Easter cards will be sent and another round of thinking of you will be sent. Funomics&pay '.25 if you are serving Easter dinner and '.50 if you are not. Remembrances and Shut ins & Let Vivian LeVier know when someone is hospitalized and shut in. Memorial&Shirley Svendsen sent money at recent deaths. ! The program committee of Lois Groth and Carolyn Kloster explained the di"erent seasons of the church year from the rst Sunday in Advent to Christ the King Sunday. We heard why we have di"erent colors for our paraments and when we use these colors. She told us of special days in each season that the colors were changed. The di"erent paraments were displayed for the group with the symbolism on each explained. ! The business meeting was called to order by Kathryn Burt, in the absence of the president and vice president. Roll call #a highlight since our last meeting $ was answered by nine members. The minutes of our last meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was received and read from Phyllis Mann and the Gladys Appelgate family. The treasurers report was presented and placed on le. Bills presented were '6.91 to Jo Svendsen for Phyllis Manns gift. Six cards were sent since last meeting. ! The nurturing committee reported they served 75 at Gladys Appelgates funeral, and 78 at Martha Bessmans funeral. ! April 12 is the Spring Breakfast. The program committee is Susan Beichley and Myrene Appelgate. Hostesses are Carolyn Kloster, Connie Buchman, Cindy Krull, and Jo Svendsen. Karen Handorf and Lois Groth are in charge decorations. ! Karen Handorf gave us suggestions for our June trip. There was discussion on when we really wanted to take our trip. Lois Groth made and Shirley Svendsen seconded the motion we have our trip after September 1. Motion carried. ! Prayer requests were received. Kathryn Burt closed the meeting with our monthly scripture and prayer. Kathryn Burt and Cindy Ormston ser ved a delicious dessert on a table decorated with crosses. ! Chapel UMW hosted their annual Womens Spring Breakfast on Saturday, April 12, 2014, at 9:00 am in the Fellowship Hall of the church. President Susan Beichley welcomed the group of 51 members. Women came from the following churches: Gladbrook Peace UCC, Gladbrook UM, Garwin UM, Green Mountain UCC, Iowa River Brethren, Marshalltown First UM, Fellowship Baptist, and Chapel. Susan Beichley read two poems, Plant a Garden and Loves Garden. The tables, which were arranged in the shape of a cross, were decorated with mint green tablecloths, wooden crosses with owers and small rose bowls with candles and owers. The committee served a delicious breakfast of a variety of co"ee cakes, fruit cups, co"ee, tea, and orange juice. ! Jane Bauer presented a program on her collection of handkerchiefs and had a beautiful display of them. She told their history, including that handkerchiefs were womens oldest accessory. Jane shared stories about the many handkerchiefs that she had collected, or that had been given to her, through the years. As the handkerchiefs were passed, guests enjoyed remembering their own handkerchief history. Jane encouraged guests to clean handkerchiefs by soaking them in Dawn dishwashing soap. ! Susan Beichley closed by reading a poem, Beauty of the Season. Remembering Harriett Fleming


" Harriett Fleming, 88, of Gladbrook, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Southridge Nursing and Rehab Center in Marshalltown. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 16, at Chapel Church. Visitation was from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, at Chapel Church. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com. " Harriett was born June 26, 1925 in Dodge Center, Minn., to John and Mary (Finch) Wirth. She graduated from Garwin High School in 1942 and then attended AIB. Harriett was united in marriage to Richard Fleming on June 6, 1948 at the Garwin Christian Church. Harriett worked at Lennox in Marshalltown and then as a homemaker raising ve children; she then was employed with Central Iowa Bean Mill in Gladbrook and Marshalltown keeping books. Harriett also worked at Producers Savings Bank in Green Mountain until her retirement. Harriett was a member of Chapel United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, serving on the District and Conference level. She was also an active member of the Ladies Cemetery Aid. She was very active on the county and state level Republican Party. Harriett enjoyed knitting and sewing; doing puzzles, crosswords and jumbles and playing scrabble were some other favorite past times. She also loved playing cards, especially SkipBO. House of Compassion " The House of Compassions Supply Closet supplies low-income families with basic toiletries, cleaning supplies, and overthe-counter medications. Approximately 531 households use the closet each month. ! Chapel is committed to help restock the supply closet each May. Shirley Svendsen works in the Closet on a regular basis. Please bring any of these items to the narthex anytime: shampoo/conditioner, laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, disposable diapers, cold & u medicines, and aspirin & non-aspirin. Thank you.

Memorial Gift ! A generous gift to the church has been made in memory of Dick Svendsen. Chapel Church now has an AED (Automated External Debrillator) located on the west wall in the Fellowship Hall. Susan Beichley will be in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the worship service on Sunday, May 4, to show the device to anyone interested. We thank the family of Dick Svendsen for this thoughtful memorial gift.
