NATIONALS WIRE

OPPONENT

LaROCHES CLUTCH KNOCKS LEAD NATIONALS

Washington tallied yet another come-from-behind victory, 4-3, over Houston in the
first game of this 2-game series last night...Adam LaRoche plated the game-tying
run in the 8th inning with an RBI-double off the left-field wall and followed that with
the eventual game-winner in the 9th, an RBI-single, scoring Denard Span...according to the Elias Sports Bureau, last night marked the first time in his career that LaRoche had 2 game-tying or go-ahead hits in the 7th inning or later in the same game.

HOUSTON ASTROS
Astros skipper Bo Porter served as Nationals third base coach under
Jim Riggleman and Davey Johnson in 2011 and 2012...HOUs current
third-base coach, Pat Listach, was Porters predecessor and made his
big league coaching debut as Washingtons third base coach in 2009
and 10...Anthony Rendon was born in Houston, graduated from Lamar
High School and starred collegiately at Rice University...none of the 25
active Nationals have played for HOU, but bench coach Randy Knorr
did as a member of the 1996 and 1997 Astros.

AS THE CALENDAR TURNS

Thanks to last nights 4-3 victory, the Nationals 15-12 record ensures a winning record in the seasons opening month (March/April)...leading into tonights finale,
their current .556 winning percentage stands as the 2nd-best mark in team history
(2005-pres.), topped only by the .636 (14-8) mark set during the 2012 season.
START ME UP
Over their last 11 games, Nationals starting pitchers have posted a 2.23 ERA (22
ER/68.2 IP), the best mark in MLB during that stretch...they have fanned 70 batters,
3rd-best in MLB and have allowed just 58 hits, 6th best in MLB.
APRIL SHOWERING RUNS
Having scored 119 runs in 27 games, the Nationals (2005-pres.) have established a
new club mark for most runs scored in the seasons opening month (March/April)...
the previous mark: 108 runs in April 2006...note that 26 of Washingtons 27 games
to date have been played in 4 ballparks (Nationals Park/16 games, Citi Field/3 games,
Turner Field/3 games, Marlins Park/3 games) that profile as pitcher friendly.
RUNS AMOK
Despite significant injuries to Wilson Ramos, Ryan Zimmerman (they have combined to play in just 11 games), Washington currently ranks 3rd in NL/10th in MLB
having scored 4.41 runs per game...only the Rockies (5.48) and Marlins (4.50) have
scored more runs per contest among clubs in the Senior Circuit.

THE SERIES
The Nationals and Astros will play a pair of 2-game sets this season as
Washington cyles through to the AL West as part of interleague play...
since the Nationals and Astros began playing in 2005, there has only
been 2 series sweeps in the series, both of which were turned in by
Washington (4-gamer, Aug. 6-9, 2012 at HOU and 2-gamer, May 4-5,
2009 in DC)...however, the Nationals won only 2 series (2007, 2012) at
Minute Maid Park from 2005-12...23 of the 57 games in the series, dating to the Nationals arrival in the Nations Capital, have been decided
by one run...Washington is 12-10 in contests decided by the minimum.

SCORE 4 = WIN MORE

The Nationals are 12-1 when scoring 4 or more runs and, conversely, just 3-11 when
limited to 3 or less runs by opposing pitchers.
GOOD WOOD
The Nationals, in 5 games since getting 3-hit in back-to-back losses to the Angels
last week (Mon. and Tue.), are hitting .298 (68-for-228) with 18 extra-base hits (12
doubles, triple, 5 home runs) and 14 walks the last 6 games.
K STREET
Nationals pitchers currently lead MLB in strikeouts (262) and strikeouts/9.0 (9.64).
Stephen Strasburgs 14.03 SO/9.0 is the highest for a qualified pitcher in March/
April since CHIs Kerry Wood in 2001 (14.28).
The last time a DC team paced MLB in strikeouts was 1919 (AL Nationals, 536).
BULL PENNINGS
Matt LeCroys bullpen currently ranks 4th in MLB/4th in NL in bullpen ERA (2.21) and
3rd in MLB/3rd in NL strikeouts (100)...Tyler Clippard paces the pen with 18 strikeouts, good for T7h in MLB/T5th in NL.
SECOND AT SECOND
Thanks to the duo of Danny Espinosa (19starts) and Anthony Rendon (8 starts), Nationals second basemen currently rank 2nd in NL (4th in MLB) with a .806 OPS (PHI
is first at .921)...this stands in stark contrast to last season, when Washingtons contingent of second baggers combined on a .670 OPS that ranked 22nd in baseball.
DCS COMEBACK KIDS
Washingtons 8 comeback wins are tied for 4th in MLB behind only the Tigers (10),
Brewers (9), Mets (9)..the Braves and White Sox have also registered 8.
Last year, Washington did not register its 7th comeback win until the seasons
35th game on May 10 vs. CHI (W7-3).
MEET MATT WILLIAMS
Matt Williams, 48, was named the 5th field manager of the Nationals on Oct. 31,
2013...the managerial position is the first of his career...joins the Nationals organization after spending the previous 4 seasons on Kirk Gibsons coaching staff in ARI...
Williams hit .268 (1878-for-7000) with 338 2B, 378 HR, 1218 RBI and 997 runs in 1866
games spanning 17 decorated seasons with ARI (98-03), CLE (1997) and SFG (8796)...Williams was a 5-time All-Star (90, 94-96, 99) and a 4-time recipient of the
Rawlings Gold Glove (91, 93-94, 97) and Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger (90, 9394, 97) awards...his 359 career homers as a third baseman ranks 5th on the all-time
list (Mike Schmidt 509, Eddie Matthews 486, Chipper Jones 389, Graig Nettles 368).
Williams reached the postseason on 6 occasions, won 3 pennants and claimed
a World Championship (2001 Diamondbacks)...in all, played in 51 postseason
games/18 World Series contests...sports previous managerial experience gained
with the Salt River Rafters (AFL division title, 12) and the Double-A Mobile BayBears (skippered final 5 weeks of 07 after Brett Butler suffered a mild stroke)...
Williams baseball DNA traces back to his grandfather, outfielder Bert Griffith,
who was a member of the 1924 World Champion AL Nationals...born in Bishop,
CA and a native of Carson City, NV, Williams is an alum of UNLV.
