The holidays are fast
approaching. Have you had that
“OH NO” moment as you’ve
realized your lack of gardening
skills will be exposed for all to
see as friends and relatives
arrive for the festivities?
What can you do on a budg-
et and with minimal effort?
First, cut the job in half.
You’re not likely to need the
back patio in the winter, so sim-
ply close the curtains.
In the front yard, remove all
dead or dying plants. Trim your
shrubs and cut back the perenni-
als. Trim low-hanging limbs on
the trees, especially the ones that
door. Fertilizing is great, but you
won’t get any bang from it this
time of year.
Collect all your old pottery.
Clean the pots with vinegar and
water to freshen them. Group
your pots into an arrangement
on or near the front porch. Put
the big ones in the back of the
group and the smaller ones in
the front. Please, don’t just put
them in boring rows!
Now you have to spend a lit-
tle money. Go buy enough pan-
sies to fill the pots with plants
about 6” apart, and buy kale fig-
uring they will grow to about 8”
across. Don’t worry — these
plants won’t freeze.
The trick is to plant now so
the pots look mature when the
you’ll have to buy more or big-
ger plants to start with.
Rake the leaves and give the
grass a final mow. Take a blow-
er to the yard the day before the
guests arrive and make every-
one think that your yard always
looks that beautiful!

Chimney cleaning is one of
those maintenance items that is
best done by professionals. You
can certainly take some preven-
tive measures to make the job
less expensive, but to keep your
home safe, enlist the help of a
licensed chimney cleaner.
Preventive measures include
burning high-quality wood.
Hardwoods — like oak — pro-
duce less creosote, a sticky, high-
ly flammable substance that
coats the inside of the chimney
and is often the culprit in chim-
ney fires. Cheaper wood pro-
duces more creosote and should
be used sparingly.
Maintain the health of your
chimney by cleaning the firebox
regularly. Once the ashes of a fire
have thoroughly cooled (you
should be able to put your hand
on them without feeling any
heat), sweep them out and dis-
pose of them. You can clean the
damper occasionally using a bris-
tle brush or broom to sweep
ashes and debris down into the
firebox, but don’t reach up into
the chimney flue.
If you maintain the roof and
gutters yourself, visually inspect
the outside of your chimney dur-
ing the maintenance task. Note
any damage to the bricks, mortar
or metal flashing around the
chimney.

Only readers of a certain age
are likely to remember lay-
away, the “pre-credit” plan
that allowed shoppers to put a
down payment on a consumer
good (often Christmas gifts or
back-to-school clothes), then
make regular payments to the
merchant until the item was
paid in full.
The practice, made popular
during the Great Depression, is
making a comeback thanks to
the credit crunch.
Many shoppers don’t want
to rack up credit card charges,
but still want to enjoy a nice
Christmas. Layaway allows
them the opportunity to plan
now and pay over time for
their holiday gift giving.
Layaway is way to purchase
an item without having to pay
for it all at once. However,
instead of taking the item
home, as in credit purchases,
the store keeps the item until
the purchaser pays the total
price. A regular payment
schedule (often monthly) is
agreed to. If the purchaser fails
to pay the total due, the store
returns the item to its invento-
ry, allowing someone else to
buy it.
Besides spreading the cost
over a few months, layaway is
also a method for ensuring the
gifts you really want to buy for
Christmas are actually avail-
able. Instead of waiting until
the last minute, and maybe
missing out on this season’s

offering to fix one of the most
common health concerns today
– hearing loss. It seems you
can’t open a newspaper or
magazine, or even turn on the

barded with ads for the latest,
greatest, (and most expensive)
new hearing aids.
“We don’t push expensive
hearing aids, or even the small-
est or the most complicated.
Spending more money on a
hearing aid doesn’t make your
hearing better, and a smaller
device isn’t necessarily the best
for an individual patient’s situa-
tion,” says George Bourne, a
