Article Summary 2 Outline

Name: Presentation Date

Find an article relating to biological anthropology from a scientific peer-reviewed journal and complete the first (Original source) and second (Reflection) parts of the outline. Find a second source related to your first and complete the third part of the outline (Related source). This may be a popular review of the original source. Limited responses will not receive full credit. More detailed instructions and links to resources are posted in Canvas. This outline should be completed and turned in on the day you present to the class and it will be used for grading the assignment. Additionally, submit the summary portions only in Canvas. No late work will be accepted.

Pts. 1. Original source: .5 ____ a. Title: Neanderthal ancestry drives evolution of lipid catabolism in contemporary Europeans .5 ____ b. Author(s): Ekaterina E. Khrameeva, Katarzyna Bozek, Liu He, Zheng Yan, Xi Jiang, Yuning Wei, Kun Tang, Mikhail S. Gelfand, Kay Prufer, Janet Kelso, Svante Paabo, Patrick Giavalisco, Michael Lachmann, Philipp Khaitovich. .5 ____ c. Authors credentials: Scientists or researchers at Max-Planck-Gesellschaft .5 ____ d. Source (complete reference): http://www.nature.com/ncomms/2014/140401/ncomms4584/full/ncom ms4584.html 5 ____ e. Summary (note that the summary length should be commensurate with the article length and should be in narrative (paragraph) format and that an in-text citation is required). This summary should identify the research topic, hypothesis, methods, results, and conclusion: Modern humans evolved from an ancient species from Africa. Humans quickly spread to all continents and coexisted with Neanderthals in Europe and Central Asia for thousands of years before the Neanderthal extinction 4530 KYA. Comparing the modern human genome to the Neanderthal found a 1%-4% similarity in these regions. These genes shared are enriched in lipid catabolism in the humans of Europe but not east Asian descent. They took individuals from 11 populations in Europe, Africa, and asia. They took a genome from a modern chimpanzee and formulated a genome from 4 different remains of Neanderthals. They found there would be clusters of Neanderthal like sites in Europe and asia but not Africa. The most 2 found matches were in the lipid catabolic process (LCP) and its nested termcellular LCP. The rates of this were much higher in europe than asia. They then examined the prefrontal cortex tissue in 14 adults from these regions. The charts showed that the spectrometric peaks could be linked to lipid compounds in 63 metabolic categories. They then examined the expression level divergence in these 14 individuals and with 6 chimpanzees relating to LCP. The results were most robust in Europeans and nonexistent in Africans. f. Critical evaluation (what makes this source credible? Why should this information be believed?): its from a big research company in germany g. Relevance to biological anthropology: genes, evolution, and genetic makeup h. Other disciplines touched upon: metabolism and expression i. Synthesis

i. In one sentence, summarize the main point of the article: the take-away message. Do Europeans have a lipid catabolism advantage because of increased Neanderthal gene similarity 2 ____ 2. Reflection a. Which part of this assignment was most difficult and why? The reading, because it used a lot of big words and scientifical things I am not the familiar with. b. Identify at least one question you have after reading the original article and explain how you could go about finding an answer. Why do Africans not have this gene that the Europeans have? c. Reflect on how the critical evaluation process impacted your opinion on the article. d. How might the information in the article be useful in the future? This might be answered very broadly such as how an understanding of larger biological principles might be useful. It might help me if I ever study more into evolution and migration of past humans 3. Related source .5 ____ a. Title: Europeans have three times more Neanderthal genes for lipid catabolism than Asians or Africans .5 ____ b. Author(s): cant find one .5 ____ c. Authors credentials: ^^^^ d. Complete reference: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/04/140402100056.htm 3 ____ e. Summary (note that the summary length should be commensurate with the article length and should be in narrative (paragraph) format and that an in-text citation is required): Max Planck Institute and CAS-MPG in shanghai show that DNA shard between humans and Neanderthals are common involving breakdown of lipids European descent humans make have a selective advantage. 1 ____ Researches analyzed the distribution of Neanderthal variants in the genomes of 11 populations in Africa, Europe and asia. Lipid synthesis genes contained a high number of Neanderthal variants that were common in Europeans origin but not Asians or Africans. This could be recent positive selection and may give some people a advantage. Lipid concentration was also found in metabolic enzymes in the brain. "We don't know what these lipid concentration changes do to the brain, but the fact that Neanderthal variants might have changed our brain composition has interesting implications," (philipp khatovich, max planck) f. Critical evaluation (what makes this source credible? Why should this information be believed?): its a popular anthropology and science news site g. Relevance to chosen article: brief overview with some extra insight
