Unit Title and Subject Area: Chapter 10 Exponential and Logarithmic Relations Grade Level: 10 and 11 Time: 3 weeks would be dedicated to this chapter. State Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSF.BF.B.5 Unit Rationale: The students will be able to understand the inverse relationship between exponents and logarithms and use this relationship to solve problems involving logarithms and exponents. This will also show up on the students final at the end of the year and if they decide to move up in their math career they will expand these concepts in later years. Goals: The student will be able to Solve exponential equations and inequalities. Evaluate logarithmic expressions. Solve logarithmic equations and inequalities. Simplify and evaluate expressions using the properties of logarithms. Solve logarithmic equations using the properties of logarithms. Solve exponential equations and inequalities using common logarithms. Evaluate logarithmic expressions using the Change of Base Formula. Evaluate expressions involving the natural base and natural logarithms. Solve exponential equations and inequalities using natural logarithms.

Objectives: Exponential Functions

Paige Gochenour Identify Exponential Growth and Decay. Graph an exponential function. Write an exponential function. Simplify expressions with irrational exponents. Solve exponential equations. Solve exponential inequalities.

Logarithms and Logarithmic Functions Logarithmic to exponential form. Exponential to logarithmic form. Evaluate logarithmic expressions. Inverse property of exponents and logarithms. Solve a logarithmic equation. Solve a logarithmic inequality. Solve equations with logarithms on each side. Solve inequalities with logarithms on each side.

Properties of Logarithms Use the product property Use the quotient property. Use properties of logarithms. Power property of logarithms. Solve equations using properties of logarithms.

Common Logarithms Find common logarithms.

Paige Gochenour Solve logarithmic equations using exponentiation. Solve exponential equations using logarithms. Solve exponential inequalities using logarithms. Change of base formula.

Base e and Natural Logarithms Evaluate natural base expressions. Evaluate natural logarithmic expressions. Write equivalent expressions. Inverse property of base e and natural logarithms. Solve base e equations. Solve base e inequalities. Solve natural log equations and inequalities.

Exponential Growth and Decay Exponential decay of the form y=a(1-r)^t Exponential Decay of the form y=ae^-kt Exponential growth of the form y=ae^kt Exponential growth of the form y=a(1-r)^t

Lessons/Main Activities: I would spend two days on Ch. 10.1 and then quiz the third day. I would spend two days on Ch. 10.2 and two days on 10.3 and then quiz over both. I would spend two days on 10.4 and two days on 10.5 and then quiz the next day on both chapters. I would review the whole chapter one day and the next we would test over it. This totals to 15 days spent on the chapter.

Paige Gochenour Assessment Measure for the Unit: There will be 3 quizzes and 1 test over the entire chapter that will be used to assess student understanding. Differentiated Instruction Anticipated: I would use many different instructional strategies to teach this lesson. I would use an overhead projector so that I could do more talking during the lesson, Write everything on the board and have the students write with me, and have the students read silently to themselves and take notes. I would also utilize paraprofessionals. List of Materials: White board. Overhead projector. Text Books. Personal Notes. Syllabus over the chapter.
