UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA: All living things are made of cells that perform functions necessary for life. LESSON OBJECTIVE: Given the chapter on animal and plant cells in the science textbook and online website, the students will be able to create a table on animal and plant cell organelles and its function with 7 out of 9 on the rubric. STANDARDS ADDRESSED: Tennessee State Common Core Standard SPI 0707.1.1 Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles.

ISTE Standard(s)

3. Research and Information Fluency: Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media

MATERIALS: Computer Microsoft Word Printer 7th grade science textbook A hand-out listing major organelles for animal and plant cells Internet Access to Animal and Plant Cell Organelles: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm Pencil Colored Pencils BACKGROUND and RATIONALE: Students will identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles. Students will also locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.

This lesson is a continuation of TN science standard 7.0. We will refer to the summary chart created here as we continue to explore the all living things that are made of cells that perform functions necessary for life. I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE: Introduction: o Begin by displaying animated image of animal and plant cells on a large screen display, overhead, or whiteboard. Animated image of animal and plant cells: http://educatoral.com/img/WoSAchievementBadges/8/plantVSanimal.jpg o Introduce the image as animal cell and plant cell, and state the definition of a cell (the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, typically microscopic) and definition of organelles (organized or specialized structures within a cell) o Ask which type of cell we humans have to engage students into the unit topic of cell (animal cell). o Ask what organisms would have the plant cells (trees, flowers, bushes, etc.). o Briefly state that there are many similarities and differences between animal and plant cells and its organelles. o To understand their similarities and differences, the students will be creating a chart to identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles. Procedures: Prior to the Computer (5 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. After the introduction, instruct the students to open their science textbook to the animal and plant cell organelles chapter. 2. Hand out the printed sheet listing major organelles for animal and plant cells. At the Computer (35 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Have the students open both MS Word and create a chart with the major organelles listed. 2. Open an Internet browser. 3. Direct students to the animal and plant cell organelles website: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model. htm. 4. Instruct students to complete the chart using their textbook and website. 5. Monitor and assist as needed Student Procedures: 1. Open MS Word and add the following title: Major Plant and Animal Cell Organelles. 2. Below the title, insert a 4-column 15-row table 3. Add the following column names: Major Organelles, Location, Description, Picture 4. Add the major organelles from the hand-out onto the rows under the column labeled Major Organelles 5. Open an Internet browser and go to the animal and plant cell organelles website: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model. htm . Student Procedures: 1. Students open their textbook to the correct chapter. 2. After receiving the hand-out, students briefly scan the major organelles for animal and plant cells.

6. Write the location of each organelles (animal cell, plant cell, or both) 7. Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles using textbook and website. 8. After completely filling in location and description & function for each organelles, save work and print a copy After the Computer (15 minutes) Teacher Procedures: 1. Redisplay the animated image of animal and plant cells on a large screen display, overhead, or whiteboard. Animated image of animal and plant cells: http://educatoral.com/img/WoSAchievemen tBadges/8/plantVSanimal.jpg 2. Instruct the students to retrieve their colored pencils 3. Have the students draw and color major organelles of animal and plant cells.Monitor and assist as needed Student Procedures: 1. Retried pencil and colored pencils 2. Referring to the large image on the board, pictures from the textbook, and information from description column, draw the appropriate organelles on the picture column 3. Color the drawn organelles with colored pencils

Closures: At the end of the class, the teacher collects the charts and students put away all the materials. ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE: Criteria 1 Drawn images Very few or none of identify each major the drawn image organelles identify the concept of their associated organelles Description and function for each major organelles 2 About half of the drawn image clearly or somewhat clearly identify the concepts of their associated organelles Very few or none of About half of the the description and description and function function demonstrates an demonstrates an appropriate appropriate representation of the representation of the organelle organelle Very few or no About half portion of portion of the chart the chart illustrates illustrates synthesizing synthesizing information to create information to create the chart the chart 3 All of the drawn image very clearly identify the concepts of their associated organelles All of the description and function demonstrates an appropriate representation of the organelle All portions of the chart illustrates synthesizing information to create the chart

Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from variety of sources and media to create the chart

MODIFICATIONS: I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular lesson. STUDENT SAMPLE:
