purpose of David Kelleys speech How to build your creative confidence is to inform about his method to help build creative confidence in order to innovate and come up with new ideas. Kelley briefly talks about his students the go through his workshops and classes at the d.school department in Stanford which is where he works as a professor. Through experiences in his life and researching other people for this project he came up with the inspiration to develop a method to help people build confidence with their creativity and not have fear of being judged. Throughout his speech he tells stories of what helped him come up with his method. He also tells stories of people that either lost their creativity at a young age after being rejected or completely revolutionized their careers because of a new idea they had. Kelley effectively communicated his message to the audience because be used stories that most people can relate and identify with, shared examples of success stories of people with creative confidence, and his reasoning and experiences for coming up with this method. Kelleys purpose and reason for his speech is to inform of his method to help people build creative confidence. He believes that everyone can be a creative person regardless of

whether they are in a creative field or not. However some people do not think of themselves as a creative person. Other people have a fear of being judged and rejected and become uncomfortable when it comes to being creative. He gives a couple of examples how peoples creativity is crushed at a young age and it stays with them into their adult lives and their jobs. Kelley has made researching and developing this method to help people build creative confidence his goal in life. He only talks about the people that he has actually helped very briefly since the focus of the speech is his research for coming up with his method. Towards the end of the speech he shares the reason why he became passionate about helping other people. He found out he had cancer. After surviving he reevaluated his life and goals and what he would leave behind. He took his second opportunity of life to develop this new goal, or his new calling as he calls it, and help as many people as possible. Kelley very briefly talks about his professional background that connects to his new goal in this speech. He has been a professor at Stanford for over 25 years and is head of a department at Stanford called d.school which focuses on design and engineering. The goal of this department is to add design thinking to analytical thinking and promote a culture of innovation which is a similar goal to goal of creative confidence. He also founded a design firm called IDEO and is responsible for apples first mouse, features on TiVos remote control along with many other innovations. Many of his research and workshops is conducted with his own students at d.school. The first story that Kelley shares is one that many people can relate to and understand. The story is about a youmg boy in school named Bryan. He was supposed to build a horse out of

clay but a classmate tells him that that is the worst thing she has ever seen and Bryan was crushed and never tried to do anything like that again. Kelley says that when he shares this story to his students they often share their own stories of how they were once crushed too because of an idea they had was rejected. The audience and the viewer could connect with this statement and remember a time when they were also rejected. Another story that is used that people could relate to or have some type of connection with is going to the doctor. His specific story deals with getting an MRI scan. He talks about children being scared and not liking the machines. This story leads to Kelleys own experience with MRI machines because he had cancer. The major story throughout the speech that most people can identify and relate to is his comparison between having fear of being judged for your creativity to the fear of snakes. One can assume that most people are scared of snakes so the audience and the viewer can connect their own fear to what is being said during the speech. He then explains that Dr. Albert Bandura, a very important psychologist, has developed a method that cures people of their fear of snakes in just in few hours. This method called Guided Mastery involves a serious of little baby steps the patient takes. Each step helps the patient become more comfortable with the snake and as an end result they touch the snake. Kelley in turn takes this same process to develop his method in order to help people lose the fear of being judged. The first piece of evidence Kelley presents involves the success of Banduras Guided Mastery. As a result the patients not only overcame their fear of snakes but they also lost fear in other areas of their lives and became more confident. These people applied the same tactics they used with the snake to their other fears and overcame them on their own. Bandura calls this self-

efficacy. The second piece of evidence involves the success of innovative thinking. The story is about Doug Deats and he made MRI machines for GE. He was very proud of his work but was disappointed to find out that children were scared of his machines. About 80 percent of children needed to be sedated in order to perform the scans. He went back and instead of just redesigning machines he designed the entire room to resemble jungles and pirate ships and even retraining the staff to deal with children like they do in parks. As a result only 10 percent of children needed to be sedated. Not only that, but since the anesthesiologist was not needed as much more children could be scanned in a day. The organization of Kelleys speech flows cleanly from one point to the next in order to get his message across. He starts by connecting the viewer and the audience to their own emotions with the story of Bryan and the fear of snakes. The success of the snake story leads to the success of the redesigned MRI machines. This leads to Kelleys experience with MRI machines and how the whole purpose of the project came to be. His last few sentences come back to Dr. Bandura and his goal that people should reach the point of self-efficacy and touch the snake (Kelley) While the flow of the speech makes sense the impact couldve been improved if he had explained a little more why he is doing this project at the beginning of the speech and not all at the end. In David Kelleys TED talk How to build your creative confidence he informs the audience about his project to help people develop creative confidence in an effective speech. The goal of the method is to help people lose the fear of being judged and rejected when it comes to being creative and everybody can be creative in any field. Not only will people think of themselves as creative but it also will help them improve in other areas of their lives. Kelley has

another opportunity at life after surviving cancer and had made this project his new life goal. He wants to promote people to be innovative thinkers and execute new ideas which can only be achieved if they actually express and think of these ideas without fear.
