Assignment/Activity Title Thoreau/Crane Essay SkillWriting

Year Freshman Portfolio Category Critical Reasoning

This essay was a major turning point in my writing career because it was the first time I wrote an essay that had a solid outline that I stuck with. I had written many outlines for essays before but I would never follow them. I would just ignore them and write the essay of the top of my head. I also would rarely include quotes in my outline. For the Thoreau/Crane essay I made a solid outline of quotes for each argument. This sped up the process but the flow of the essay was a little off because each idea was so distinctly separated. As a writer, I have a tendency to write conclusions that go off topic and barely connect with the subject of the essay. This is often because instead of concluding the essay Ill write a rant in which I just throw a bunch of random new ideas that onto the paper as they come to me. The Thoreau/Crane Essay was the epitome of such a conclusion. I began ranting about the contrasting writing styles of Thoreau and Crane instead of tying up the loose ends of the essay. I went deep into the advantages and disadvantages of their opposite writing styles, but in the process I neglected to achieve the purpose of a concluding paragraph. On the other hand, my body paragraphs showed my strength of being able to include interesting points and tie my ideas together while adequately answering the question. The conclusion was the main thing that I got points of on. If I were to rewrite the essay, I would completely change my approach to the conclusion. I would begin writing it with a specific idea of what it would be about instead of just coming up with it as I go. This would most likely prevent meaningless rants.
