CHILDRENS CLOTHES NEEDED

Earlier this year we joined a team of 13 people who visited Kyajubira Village, Masaka, Uganda to distribute Clothes to Orphan and Destitute Children. Many Children only have rags for clothes. We are appealing for good quality Childrens Clothes for babies up to teens, as we will be returning in February 2015 to take more clothes to the desperate children in need. In the village there are 1000 children who are educated by the Charity and there is also a Health Centre where children can receive free treatment. There are 3 schools, Nursery, Primary and High School. Nursery Children receive Porridge in the mornings and other children receive Posho and Beans at Lunch time. If you can help us please deliver your clothes to 2 Drury Close, Bowthorpe, NR5 9DD Thank you. Kevin and Liz

Bowthorpe Police Station Norfolk Constabulary Wendene Norwich NR5 9HA non emergency Tel: 101 lesteraj1@norfolk.pnn.police.uk Welcome to my monthly newsletter. This month I wish to make you all aware of the up and coming Nationwide Bike Marketing Surgery that is been held at Bowthorpe Police Station. I am inviting you all to come and visit your local Safer Neighbourhood Team between 9am to 11am, Monday 2nd June 2014. Norfolk Constabulary has adopted a nationwide initiative to combat theft of bicycles with a series of events taking place around the Norfolk. The simple aim of the scheme is to reduce thefts and assist in the owners recovery of their property if stolen. At our local event, we will offer crime prevention advice and we will permanently tattoo your bike with an indelible unique security number, free of charge, we will also register your bike on the Nationwide database that day, then your covered. By simply marking bicycles in this way, it will minimise the attractiveness of your bike to potential thieves and significantly reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of bicycle theft. Nationally the events have proved extremely popular and successful with 63,000 bicycles registered on BikeRegister in the past 12 months and I urge you to visit us. Should you be unable to attend, but still wish for your bicycle to be marked and registered on the scheme, please contact me direct via e mail on lesteraj1@norfolk.pnn.police.uk and I will be more than happy to arrange a alternative date and time. Crime prevention is a high priority of your Bowthorpe Safer Neighbourhood team, we can be contacted anytime by telephoning 101 and remember should you wish to report any crime anonymously by crime stoppers on 0800 555 111. CHRISTIAN AID WEEK MAY 11th TO 17th

Christian Aid supports people around the world who are in desperate need, people of all faiths and none. The following story from Colombia, South America, is just one example of the difference it can make in peoples lives.

Supporting people in conflict. Around five million people in Colombia have

had to leave their homes and Afro-Colombians like Edile are among those most affected by the violence. Edile, aged 9, lives in a humanitarian zone in Las Camelias with his family, after fleeing the horrors of war. Humanitarian zones are demarcated areas offering a safe refuge to people living in areas of conflict. Anyone bearing arms is denied entry. When Edile was little, before he moved to Las Camelias, his father was killed. Edile's harrowing drawings reflect his biggest fear: of being attacked by armed groups. In a school set up by CIJP, the teachers keep a close eye on the psychological wellbeing of Edile and his friends. People feel safe at Las Camelias. It is a space for them to be listened to and heal their emotional scars. CIJP provides psychological support to victims of armed conflict, legal support so that victims can get justice, and workshops to educate people about their rights. Ediles fears havent gone away yet, but he now feels and is much safer. He has the space to just be a child again. He says: I am happy here. It is fun, we play ball, I have many friends. For the time being Edile and his family are safe, but they are still waiting to return to their land.

Thank you for supporting Christian Aid this month .

Ten of us spring cleaned Bunkers Hill Wood in April and the wood looked really clean after that. Nature however does a much better job and clothes the floor of the wood with new growth in May. This happens before the upper storey of the wood gets closed in with new leaves. In particular the floor gets covered with bluebells. Now maybe you celebrate spring by listening out for the first cuckoo or by waiting for the swallows to come back. Or perhaps by dancing round the may-pole (does anyone still do that?) or enjoying the hawthorn blossom (may blossom) in the hedgerows or decorating your house. Many of us though try to get to a bluebell wood at least once in May. Bluebells woods, Im told, are unique to this country. The bluebells form a complete mat, carpeting the wood with blue. It is just as wonderfully odd as waking up on a winters day and finding the world has turned white with snow: you no more expect the ground to be blue than you imagine it to be white. It is as special in its way as, say, going to see the wading birds fly off the mud-flats in North Norfolk at a high tide, or as going on an African safari in the Serengeti. But you dont have to go anywhere near so far. Foxley Wood near Bawdeswell has amazing bluebells and is just down the Fakenham road. The blue carpet at Bunkers Hill Wood (just between Bowthorpe and West Earlham) isnt so complete or large as at Foxley Wood, but it is still worth seeing and it is your local wood and within walking distance.

ROD BEALE Liberal Democrat

Rod has lived in Norwich for 14 years and knows the city and the issues which affect it well. Rod is working with local MP Simon Wright to hold Norwichs Labour City Council to account, protecting local services from cuts at City Hall and campaigning to freeze council tax to help hard-pressed local families and is opposing Labours 16% pay rise for councillors. His main priority is creating more jobs for local people. Rod has welcomed action by the Lib Dems to create 1,460 new apprenticeships for young people in Norwich since 2010 and has backed moves by Lib Dem councillors to encourage council contractors to hire more apprentices. Locally, Rod is campaigning to get stronger action on dog fouling across Bowthorpe. He wants to see the City Council issuing fines to dog owners who fail to clear up their pets mess and more regular patrols from dog wardens As a keen cyclist Rod is passionate about improving Norwichs cycling infrastructure and has welcomed 3.7m investment from Lib Dems in government to build a new cycle path across the city, linking residential areas with employment areas. You can contact Rod by emailing R.Beale@NorwichLibDems.org.uk

JEAN BISHOP Green

Jean lives in the city centre with Bob, her partner of 30 years. Jean and Bob have run their own successful businesses in the horticultural industry for the past three decades, even winning a gold medal for design at the Chelsea Flower Show in the Jean with Green Party National mid 1980s, although Jean is now semi-retired.
Leader, Natalie Bennett.

Jean and Bob have always worked allotments together and offering support with growing vegetables is an idea Jean has to encourage interested individuals and families to experience the pleasure and benefits of 'growing your own' fresh produce, which would also help build community spirit for people of all ages. Being semi-retired Jean is able to find more time to pursue her interests in art and politics. She would like to see a fairer society and a safer environment to hand on to future generations. Some of her time is also spent helping to care for Bobs elderly mother who has Parkinsons disease, and lives some distance away. Cycling is a passion for both Jean, and Bob, who is involved with the running of Norwich Cycling Campaign. Jean feels its a great way to keep fit and get about in the city, and she would like to make the roads in Bowthorpe safer, to encourage more cycling. A long held desire would be to have a 20mph speed limit introduced in residential areas.

I am married with two sons and have lived in Bowthorpe for the last 12 years. I have 8 years experience as a city councillor in Sewell ward and look forward to the opportunity of using my knowledge and expertise to represent my fellow residents in Bowthorpe. I spend a lot of time with residents discussing their needs and concerns and something that comes up time again and again is the problems people are facing because of the Bedroom Tax and it appals me that so many decent people are being put under enormous strain by this piece of legislation. Along with the blocked drains; parking issues and overgrown trees, there is a lot of concern about the amount of dog mess on our pavements. As an owner of two dogs, I always have a pocketful of black doggie doo bags with me and I intend to run a campaign in Bowthorpe urging people to be responsible pet owners. Bowthorpe is lucky enough to have some lovely wooded areas and also to have people who volunteer their time picking up litter. I find it is a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours and it is quite amazing what you have find. I was the chair of Bowthorpe Community Partnership and have a keen interest in fighting for our ward at both local and national level. I would be honoured to be your representative for Bowthorpe at City Hall.

PAUL WELLS Conservative

I have lived in west Norwich for most of my adult life; first coming to our city to study History at the UEA. For the last five years I have lived in Chapel break, previously living in Earlham. I know Bowthorpe is a fantastic place, with a strong community spirit, but like all communities is does have problems which I think as a City Councillor I would be able to help address. Having previously served as a County Councillor for Bowthorpe and as a local resident, I have really good understanding not only of our community but also how to help get things done on a practical level. I am particularly focused on making sure the council gets it basics right: we as a community need to know that our bins will be collected on time and that the Council will keep our streets clean. This is not difficult but time and time again I know residents have told me that they are unhappy with the service offered. I also strongly believe the council should focus on rooting out waste and inefficiency so that residents are given value for money. Both the Labour and Green parties would like to pretend that their only option is put up council tax, I disagree, we in Norwich already pay the highest tax in Norfolk, surely that is enough? This election should be about choosing who is best placed to make our community even better, not party politics, If you want a hard working enthusiastic councillor, who will get fight for our community, please give me your support on the 22 nd May.

ASHWELL COURT
Hello everyone. I am writing this having just returned from a mystery tour, organised by our friends at Bradecroft. What a lovely mystery tour it has been, with beautiful weather and lovely destinations (ultimately revealed as Sandringham for lunch followed by an afternoon spent at Hunstanton). The blue sky, the blue sea and sunshine made the views magical, even though the tide was so far out it was a long walk to have a paddle! The countryside was really beautiful with the trees all bursting with new leaves.. Our driver told us that we had travelled through more than 40 Norfolk villages quite a feat in one day. Here at Ashwell Court we are continuing our programme of evening entertainment. A lively evening was held when Petes Country Music came to entertain, and The Dennis Light Orchestra gave an enjoyable evening of music at the beginning of April. As usual these events were accompanied by a lovely buffet prepared by our dedicated entertainment team. It is with great sorrow we have to report the loss of two of our oldest and dearest residents, Unfortunately Kathleen Cawdron died in March. She is greatly missed here, as is also Mary Percival, who died at the beginning of April. Our sympathy goes to the families of these two ladies. Our Luncheon Clubs on Tuesday and Thursday are running very successfully. Richard, our new chef, prepares some delicious meals and we are fortunate to have such an efficient and talented chef. Best wishes to you all from Ashwell Court. Bye for now. Margaret

Leyham Court
What a wonderful spring, our garden is looking beautiful thanks to Adrian; we really appreciate his efforts and thank him very sincerely. There have been changes in tenancies and we hope our new arrivals will be happy here. Our coffee morning and Easter egg raffle in aid of Marie Cure Nurses raised 130 and our usual activities are fairly well supported. The quiet room which is also our library has had a lovely facelift, thanks to John Jessop at No. 31, and we are enjoying the nice new furniture in the lounge, so its good to be living here in such comfort and care of the staff. I hope everyone has had a to enjoy the good weather. happy Easter and continue Rose Smith 20

BRADECROFT
Hello everyone, I have not got much to say about Bradecroft , except we still have our weekly events, and we did have our outing last month. must say we all enjoyed it. We went to Sandringham for lunch and a look round, then on to Hunstanton to shop, But what made it so enjoyable was we went through all the villages, and to see the country side was a great joy - over forty villages in one day. Thanks to the driver, he was a real joker, and thanks to George, and Faye for the hard work they put into getting it all arranged. Now we can look forward to this months outing. Even the weather was kind to us today Well bye to all for now. Take care, till next time Pat

The Raptor Trust - Common Buzzards and Red Kites

.Thankfully both of these birds are recovering their populations after human persecution, and now that we get to see more of them, the problem is that they are so similar! They both soar high in the sky and yes from a great distance it can be difficult to tell them apart, but if you can see the shape of the tail then it's actually quite easy! Here's how...if the tail is rounded then it's a buzzard but if it's forked then it's a kite. We have several nesting pairs of buzzards not that far away that often soar over Bowthorpe and Longwater, and there is now a pair of red kites near Easton that often soar over the Showground. So why soar? Well both of these birds are quite large compared to most of our native birds and as such it takes more energy to flap and glide around. Using the thermals of hot air from urban areas or the lift from areas of trees and so on these birds fan out their large wings and tail and, like a hot air balloon, they let the air do some of the work! Unfortunately their energy efficient and opportunistic natures often brings them into conflict with humans. Although a lot of the time they will take roadkill and often enjoy chasing worms across fields that have been freshly turned, they will also take other items. Often birds (sometimes game birds) and rabbits, which doesn't always leave them in good favor! We were at an event only a couple of weeks ago where I have to say I was very distracted! Not only were there up to six buzzards at any one time circling over to the east of us but a red kite gliding over the treeline to the north and at two times a Sparrowhawk hunting along the wood edge to the west. An ideal day! Three of our native species of birds of prey in the wild and not a minute of six hours went by that I couldn't seen one of them in the sky! Claire Halls

Costessey and Bowthorpe District Rainbows, Brownies and Guides Bowthorpe Units
Last month I mentioned that we will be at the Costessey May Fayre so do look out for us to say hello and maybe play a game or two. The girls continue to work on the challenges towards the Big Brownie Birthday and learn useful knowledge and skills whilst having fun. Some of our girls from Costessey and Bowthorpe went by train with their leaders and all their luggage to Skegness for the Starburst event, which kicked off the BBB. Some really good news from Guides: we congratulate four girls who have completed their challenges for the Baden-Powell Award who have been presented with their badges and certificates. For our Baden Powell award, which is the highest award you can achieve at guides, we completed 10 different clauses and attended a Baden Powell adventure weekend during July 2013. Our favourite clause we completed was creating a collage of todays clothing. During the BP adventure weekend we completed many activities all relating to the theme of Sherlock Holmes such as finger printing and our own version of would I lie to you. We enjoyed the weekend as we met many other girl guides who were also working on their Baden Powell award. Completing our Baden Powell has made us more confident and independent girls and we feel extremely proud of ourselves. Chloe, Amy, Lucy and Evie. We hope you would like to find out more about our meetings' activities. We are always ready to welcome new girls and helpers. News from St Michaels VA Junior

Going for Gold! Both St Michaels and Cloverhill Infant Schools were recently awarded Gold for the nationally recognised RE Quality Mark. Children and staff are very proud of this achievement, with only seven other schools achieving the prestigious Gold Mark nationally in 2014.

Out and About Year Six recently enjoyed a residential stay at

Horstead Activity Centre. They had a fantastic time, whilst developing teamwork, communication and problem solving skills. For their studies of Norfolk, Children in Year Five had a marvellous time at Easton College farm, where they saw many animals, including newborn lambs!

Walk for WaterAid

Children will be taking part in a t w o - m i l e sponsored walk to raise money for WaterAid. Two miles is half the distance an average African woman has to walk for water. Watch out for classes walking around Bowthorpe the week beginning 28th April.

The area earmarked for Bowthorpes new Care Village was excavated last October. A report on the findings and where they will be exhibited will be published in next months issue, subject to permission being granted.
