PERISCOPEnews A building by any other name: The real lives of Swartz, Fowler, and McGowan E
April 2014
very day the students of Carlisle High School walk into the Swartz, Fowler, and McGowanbuildings. While you may be familiar with the halls of these buildings, do you know the stories of their namesakes?

Carlisle High School

mma Thompson McGowan was born in 1876. She was born in Virginia, where she spent her younger years with her parents, Calobe and Laura White Thompson. While still young, her family moved to Carlisle. The rest of her childhood was spent in Carlisle, and she graduated from

Carlisle High School in 1894. During the next phase of her life, Emma went to a school in Virginia and got a teaching degree. She returned to Carlisle in 1896 and taught at the Lincoln School on Pitt Street. This school was also referred to as the Colored School by the community, according to community documents. She decided to move away from Carlisle in 1901 with

her husband Rev. Osborne H. McGowan. After 16 years, she made the decision to move back with her four children. She started to teach again at the Lincoln School, but once it was closed in 1927, she was moved to the Wilson School Building, which, during times of segregation, was considered the school for African-American students. She taught here until 1943. McGowan was well known for her great influence on all of her students. Many of her students were inspired by her to pursue higher education, especially in hopes of gaining a teaching degree. Once named the West Building, the McGowan building was renamed in her honor in the latter half of the 20th century. McGowan passed away in 1966. community could come to the school. When asked how he feels about having Fowler named after him he stated, Im not sure how to think; Im just very humbled by it all. After being superintendent for 12 years, Fowler is now an associate professor of educational leadership

avid L. Swartz was the superintendent of the Carlisle Area School District starting in 1950. The accomplishments he made while being the superintendent were vast. While in office, he kept up with the many changes that were occurring during his era. He made great improvements in technology, as well as met the unusual demands [that had]

erald L. Fowler was born in Washington D.C., where he grew up and went to school. After high school he attended the University of Maryland. For the first part of his career he worked at Prince Georges County, in Maryland, and he stayed there for ten years. Later, he completed a doctoral program at the University of Maryland, and then asked his advisor when he should begin to apply for jobs. It just so happened that his advisor found an ad for a reading supervisor at the Carlisle High

School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. In 1980, he moved to Carlisle to begin his new job. After being a reading supervisor, he became the principal at Mooreland Elementary, and later became the superintendent of the entire school district. Fowler, along with a committee of other members, are responsible for the creation of the Fowler building in between the McGowan and Swartz buildings. He believed that the two schools should have a building that connects them, and also have a place where the

been placed upon the physical, educational, and administrative aspects of public school systems, said the school districts Board of Directors in 1965. Along with expanding several aspects of the CASD, the district also increased the number of students from 2800 to over 6000. The most notable accomplishment made by Swartz was his addition of the Swartz Building in September of 1965. This building was a high school strictly for 9th and 10th graders from the four communities that made up the school district at this time. The total cost to create the building was $1,778,709. The original plans called for a total of 38 classrooms. In 1965, the new Swartz building was dedicated. Carlisle was grateful for the efforts he made towards the educational program, along with the leadership he showed during his time as a superintendent.

hat has many faces and can affect anyone, no matter their race, gender, or social standing? The answer is Autism. April is Autism Awareness month, and about one in every 68 people today has this developmental disorder. To give that perspective, thats almost five million people in the U.S. alone. However, there are still many misconceptions about the issue. In my class I think the biggest misconception that I have to address and discuss is students thinking that all Autistic students are non-verbal and are so socially awkward that they can never hold down a job and/ or friendships, said Theresa Dixon, who teaches the Special Children, Special Adults class. However, often this is not true. I constantly tell my studentsif you have met one student with Autism then you have met one person with Autism, said Dixon, emphasizing that Autism encompassing a broad spectrum of disorders. CHS senior Jude Nickel has Aspergers Syndrome, one of the disorders on this spectrum. Theres a lot of misconception that [Autism] is similar to mental retardation, but its not, she said. There needs to be a better understanding of it. Nickel also mentioned that those not on the Autism spec-

trum often misinterpret the actions of those who are. Its often viewed as not having empathy because [those with Autism] dont know how to express things well in social situations, she said. But theres a difference between lack of empathy versus overstimulation of emotion. She emphasized that although Autism is often seen as an illness, its not a disease its a developmental disorder. Dixon defined the disorder as a developmental brain disorder thataffects brain areas controlling language, social interaction and abstract thought. Junior Jill Morton has also had some experience with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Though she is not on the spectrum, one of her relativeswho is seven years old and mildly Autistictaught himself to read at age four with no help from his parents. You wouldnt know he [was on the spectrum], Morton said. I didnt know until my parents told me. As Dixon said, Every single person diagnosed with a Spectrum Disorder is an individual with their own unique nature and behaviors. Morton summed up her experiences by saying of those affected by Autism: In the end, theyre just like anybody else. To read the extended version of this article, visit us at CHSperiscope.com!

eport card time can be very stressful for some of the CHS student body, and this past marking period made it even harder for some students. Change is a familiar concept for CHS this year; with all the changes to the lunch menus, technology policies, and new rules that have been implemented, its no real surprise that more changes have come. For as long as most CHS students can remember, report cards have always been distributed during homeroom, but beginning this year that is no longer the case. Instead, report cards have been emailed home to parents. According to the Director of Digital Learning and Technology Stephanie Douglas, the reason the high school has changed to this new process is to ensure that parents receive the report

card in a timely manner. By not printing each students report card, the school district is saving money on toner and paper, which helps support CHSs greener living ideals. Junior Debbie Stanback thinks that emailing report cards home is a good idea because its more eco-friendly. However, she did say, I didnt even know they were being emailed home until my mom told me. I wish I would have had a heads up about this beforehand. Junior Haley Scott thinks that emailing the report cards are a good idea because it helps save trees and our environment. Not to mention it helps insure that parents see their kids grades. Though this change has perplexed some students, Douglas said she thinks the effect on CHS students is minimal [and this process] simply takes the information formatted on our standard report card and delivers it electronically to families.

any classes at CHS were beginning to wind down by mid-Aprilbut not the VoTech programs. For them, the hardest part of the year had just begun. Many CHS students are recently finished taking the NOCTI test, which provides for college credit as well as recognition of industry proficiency. They could earn all the fabulous industry certifications we offer, have straights As but if they arent proficient [on the NOCTI exam], then no college credit, explained Dr. Michele Orner, director of CHSs Center for Career and Technical Education.

The test has two parts, one written and one practical. A students overall test score is based off of the lowest score of the two. What really makes it challenging is that the teacher doesnt know whats on the test, said Orner, mentioning that although NOCTI publishes a skills list, teachers nor students have no way of knowing which of these specificskills will actually be tested. Ashlie McClure, part of the Health Careers Academy, is hoping to pass the Nursing Assistance NOCTI exam. I chose to get involved in the program because it offered great opportunities to earn certificates for [the] work force its a great experience, she said. McClure said that although

she had not studied outside of class, most of her health career classes is NOCTI-focused. A pre-test is given at the beginning of the year to determine what students need to work on most. Its preparing you to take charge when you get into

the field, and skill testing is a big part, said McClure. The difficulty of the program, she said, depends on how much work you put into it. Senior Kellee Kennedy agreed. Its pretty easyweve gone over it all so many

times, said the cosmetology studentof NOCTIs written portiona testament to both a great cosmetology program and a lot of hard work. [The most rewarding part] is getting your license and being able to get to work, Kennedy said. There are ten cosmetology students taking the exam this year. Theres a lot of pride in doing well, pride in opportunity, said Orner. She mentioned students rushing into her office to ask for scores as soon as they were available, even though the official passing score is yet to be determined. [Its] to further my education, said Kennedy simply when asked of the tests importance.

a difficult to find sometimes; Rachels compassion, and seeing the best in everyone is a magnificent message, especially for high schoolers. The presenter at the event, a family friend of the Scotts, was a dynamic speaker. The entire assembly was very welcoming and engaging, and did great justice to Rachels story. Rachels Challenge, no doubt, had an extremely powerful impression on all who saw it. The emotional impact of the cruel murder of Rachel drove the message deep. If the wet eyes of attending students were any indication, the presentation did not fall on deaf ears or closed minds. With effort, CHS will become another link in the chain of love and acceptance formed in the wake of the death of Rachel Joy Scott.

hen you are told that you have to attend an antibullying assembly, what you might expect is some tired, fruitless lecture that does little more than get you out of a class period. The Rachels Challenge presentation held at CHS on Apr 15 was anything but that. Rachels Challenge began in memoriam of Rachel Joy Scott, the first victim of the Columbine shooting in 1999. The assembly centered on her life, death, and beliefs. Testimonies from those who knew Rachel showed that she was accepting, inclusive, and loving. Rachels beliefs, as reflected in her own writings and testimonies of people who knew her, were centered on natural optimism. Optimism can be

pril has given us a long awaited spring; rain and snow finally stopping, with temperature shooting up to the 60s. With warmer weather, everyone is anxious to get out their warm weather clothes: shorts and tank tops, dresses and skirts. Which is why CHS sent home an email earlier this month, reminding all parents that their children are still following the dress code. It is perfectly reasonable for the administration to make sure everyones dressing properly, so that revealing clothing does not distract other students from their

classes during school hours. Be that as it may, it is unreasonable that revealing clothing is a distraction to students. The most common example of this is girls wearing shorts, skirts, or dresses that are considered too short. Without a doubt, more girls have been called out for the length of their skirts than for example someone wearing a hat or sagging their pants. It would be wonderful to say how ridiculous this precedent is; that teens are perfectly capable of focusing on their classes, even if a girl happens to be showing more than three fourths of their legs. Unfortunately, many guys do let their minds and eyes wander. The attention that should be

going to their teachers and class work ends up being unwantedly directed to the girls. Key word: unwanted. Most of the time, a girl is dressing to what she likes to wear and to not die of overheating. Theyre not wearing what they wear for the sake of objectifying comments and someone staring down their shirt. So the obvious solution is to punish the girls for wearing weather-appropriate clothing. Perhaps, instead of telling the girls, When in doubt, cover up, the real problem should be addressed: boys should be taught to be respectful no matter what someone is wearing and to mind where their attention is going.

As demonstrated by freshman Abygale Harlan, sophomore Lydia Estes, junior Julia Kephart, and senior Catherine Steffy, CHS requires ngertip length on skirts, shorts, and dresses. But should this rule be more enforced than appropriate behavior? Photography: SarahBeth Davis

Junior Julia Kephart said, Getting ready for a dance, like prom, is very stressful because you have to look amazing so on the morning of the dance it takes from 10:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., right before the dance starts youre still getting ready, or at least thats what it feels like. But guys stress too! Men have the manners to spend money for the ticket or even dinner which can be very stressful. The guy also has to rent a tux which can empty their wallet pretty fast, and they have to take it back, which is like watching your money get thrown away. Junior William Habig said, Prom can be a lot of money, with the ticket and the meal, depending on the girl. Both dates stress to impress not just their partner, but themselves too. After all the money spent, it usually turns out to be a great m e m o r y. In the end, all the pros outweigh the cons, because the pros are specific stories that you get to tell and not many people can relate to, like maybe how he approached the door and called you beautiful, or how she made the first move on the dance floor. Prom may have some bad moments, but the good always make it worth everything.

f youve been around the halls in CHS, youve seen the posters up for the national Day of Silence. The Day of Silence is a movement to end the harassment and oppression of LGBTQIAP people in schools. On April 11th, participating students take a vow of silence for the day. This is to bring attention to LGBT+ students who have been silenced through bullying and harassment. Its important for all student participants to note that if they refuse to respond to or answer a teacher during class time, the teacher is completely allowed to punish them for it. Giving the teacher indication of why you are silent is highly important in this, but they are not legally obliged to respect the silence. CHS has raised a significant amount of awareness for the event, so teachers should at least know why a student is remaining silent, no matter if the teacher supports their actions or not.

The Day of Silence is a positive movement, as it gets students and teachers to show support for their LGBT+ peers. However, the Day of Silence is not a completely adequate response to the issues of LGBT+ harassment. It is not enough to be silent for those who have been silenced. LGBT+ people are continually harassed simply for their being. The response to violent oppression is not a passive protest. Silence is the exact thing that anti-LGBT+ people want; assemblies should be held, arguments made against harassment and oppression. Speak out against bullying while its happening instead of only showing respect to the aftermath. The Day of Silence is definitely a step in the right direction to bring recognition to LGBT+ students. But by now, more should be done to assist the cause rather than passively support it. However, the most important thing is to respect someones decision to participate in the Day of Silence, and to remember why.

The Cinderella Shop: Hoping to make all of your prom wishes come true

n average, a typical teenage girl spends about $200 for a dress, $60 for shoes and $20 for jewelry. As significant as prom is to most females with all of the costs, prom can become very expensive. In order to eliminate your financial concerns, Carlisles first annual Cinderella Shop was open for high school girls looking for beautiful formal gowns for a fantastic price: free! After school on April 15 and 16, from 3-5 p.m., anyone wanting to find a dress was welcome to check out the dresses in the Swartz Counseling Center.

The dresses were gathered via donation. The event organizers, Swartz school counselor Johanna Jones and secretary Betsy Richwine, looked for help, sending out a district-wide email to seek dress donations just a few weeks ago. When asked how the idea came to be, Richwine stated, My daughter teaches in Mechanicsburg, and they do a Cinderella shop there. About 80 gowns were donated in honor of the event, many still with tags on them. There were not many requirements when considering the donations; all Jones and Richwine asked is that the dresses are still in nice shape. We dont want a dress that

has stains. It has to look clean. There shouldnt be any rips or tears. We also dont want any items that are outdated, said Richwine. The wardrobe should be gowns that looked like they have never been worn. The dresses should also make the individual feel beautiful on their special day. If the girl is interested in keeping the gown, they were more than welcome to do so. If they felt as though the dress would not get used again, the gown should be donated back to the school. The future goal for the Cinderella Shop is to continue offering dresses and accessories for other dances, such as Homecoming and Winter Ball.

Nailed It! What Pinterest may not tell you about popular nail polish designs

e all want top notch nails that are salon quality, but finding a design that actually works may be difficult. Websites such as Pinterest can help to energize your creative juices so you can have the best looking nails. However, what if the designs that the website showcase dont work quite as well? One design that has been popular among Pinterest is the water marble design. Step by step pictures show how each of the phases should look when setting up for the nail art. The pictures are perfect, but if you do not use the right equipment, the step by

Above is an attempt at the water marble technique that is popular among nail designs. Photography: Amber Krause

step process will not work. When water marbling, the directions fail to tell you to use certain brands. If you use any type of nail polish, the water marbling will not work and you will be left with a multi-

colored streak on your finger. Sally Hansen and OPI nail polishes are highly recommended brands to use for water marbling. The brand allows the nail polish to correctly form in the room temperature water so that the design is

manageable to work with. It is also important to make sure the colors you use go together because the colors can blend together if they dont complement one another when forming the design. Another design that is interesting is the Day of the Dead nail art that is streaming on the Pinterest site. The design gives your nail the skeleton look, making your nails look and feel festive. When performing the Day of the Dead art work, you can use almost any nail polish and crafts to successfully apply the design. At Michaels Arts and Crafts Store, they have a lot of items that can be improvised for the detail that goes into the designs. Little foam pieces in the

shapes of flowers, animals, and shapes can be found inside of the store. The pieces help make the applying process easier that way tons of nail polish is not used. The pieces usually come in packs which vary from five to ten dollars depending on the size of packages you get. When performing the nail art designs, it is important that you have nail polishes that will help you with certain nail designs. Pinterest instructions tend to not tell you what nail polishes to use, so it is best that you do some research before experimenting with the nail designs. You may need to spend some money, but remember: it is worth it if you want the salon quality nails you have been dying to grasp.

How did you get ready to dive Into the Sea for Prom 2014?
ith prom in their sights, a person can easily become overwhelmed with purchasing the perfect attire or finding the right way to ask their date to prom. We asked seniors Erin Ulrich, Brodie Robinson, Kyle Whitlock, Megan Habeck and Audrey Nickle about their plans and outlook on the Into the Sea-themed prom as it quickly approached. What aspects of prom are you most excited for? Audrey: Im excited to see how they set up with the theme and decorations and spending time with my friends. Erin: Im excited mostly about eating and for the actual dance. Brodie & Kyle: It would have to be the Into the Sea themed prom! What colors and styles do you think are in this year? Megan: Lace is really in this year and the nude underneath and the black lace on top seems to be really popular as well. Erin: I would say that prom is usually lighter colors. What are your plans for before/after prom? Megan: Before prom no, just get ready and have dinner with friends but after prom were having a movie marathon.

hen it comes to digital art, photography, website design and other computer-based creative activities, Adobe products clearly stand above the competition. Unfortunately, Adobe products remain some of the most expensive software on the market, often costing hundreds of dollars for the complete versions.

Until just recently students and educators could rarely afford to purchase the software for personal use, but Adobes latest creation Creative Cloud is designed to solve that issue. Creative Cloud is a cloudbased membership service (www.creative.adobe.com) that gives users unrestricted access to Adobe software. Educational membership plans start at as little as $20 a month for access to a single program or $30 a month for a complete membership that includes all of Adobes software.

As a member of Creative Cloud, a user gains access to programs such as Illustrator and Photoshop without having to spend hundreds of dollars and updates are automatically applied at no additional cost. Whereas the software used to become dated as soon as it was purchased, CC apps are never out of date and new features are frequently added. In addition, Adobe web hosting is available, offering up to 5 websites built using Muse and a Behance ProSite online portfolio, allowing us-

ers to easily share work online without any other costs. Adobes primary competition comes from Apples Logic Pro ($200), Final Cut Pro ($300), and Aperture ($80) that serves similar purposes to Audition, Premiere, and Photoshop, although those programs can only be downloaded on the Mac App store. All things considered, there isnt better software than Adobes and now there isnt anything that is more affordable. With Creative Cloud, the only limit is your imagination.

reedom is not free. American soldiers fight endless wars in an effort to keep freedom for America and its citizens. In the movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the fight for freedom comes to Americas own doorstep, or better yet, from within America itself. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a different kind of superhero movie. There isnt some insane villain with lots of superpowers who just wants world domination. The villian, without giving out spoilers, hits much closer to home. The entire movie seems very grounded in reality, despite being a movie about a genetically modified super soldier. Its comparable to the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy, just

with more comedic moments and less brooding Batman. Now, the movies more grounded approach doesnt mean that it has no epic setpiece moments. The Captain is still a monster of a man and a very capable superhero. Early on in the movie, when he is escaping a certain building on a motorcycle, a big futuristic helicopter appears. Captain America proceeds to leap off of the motorcycle on to the helicopter, tear it apart while on top of it, and then jump back on to his motorcycle just in time for the helicopter to explode. Needless to say, the Captain hasnt lost any of his abilities since The Avengers. Another great thing about this movie is the supporting characters. Scarlett Johannson and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles as the Black Widow and Nick Fury, re-

spectively, and play off Captain America better than any other Marvel movie. The actors all have a great chemistry on-screen and pull you into the

movie with a strong suspension of disbelief. At no point in the movie did the dialogue feel forced, which is in large part due to the great writing.

Chris Evans as Captain America and Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow share great chemistry as partners with a complex relationship. Photography: Marvel Oficial Website.

The writing in the movie is serious at times, leaving almost a social commentary on modern America, and funny at times, with strong interactions between Cap and Black Widow. Instead of relying solely on jokes about how Captain America is a person in the wrong time, the humor is more situational. It leads to interesting scenarios for the characters, and makes everything that is happening around them seem much more believable. If theres one type of movie that never fails to entertain, its a superhero film. While there are other superhero movies coming out this summer, mainly The Amazing Spiderman 2, its going to be extremely hard to beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The movies only fault is that it makes the wait for The Avengers 2 that much harder.

Scandal
(Thursday at 10 p.m. on ABC) Starring: Kerry Washington, Columbus Short, Darby Stanchfield, Katie Lowes, Guillermo Diaz, Jeff Perry, Joshua Malina, Bellamy Young, Scott Foley, and Tony Goldwyn. Try it if you like: House of Cards, The Newsroom, or The West Wing. Scandal is a drama that revolves around professional crisis manager, Olivia Pope (Washington) and her crisis management firm staff. Pope works to defend the public images of others while engaging in a secret affair with the President of the United States, Fitzgerald Grant (Goldwyn). Each episode focuses on a specific case that Popes firm must solve including presidential campaigns, murder trials, and the cover-ups of the American government. In its current season, however, Scan-

dal has strayed away from its case-of-the-week format and is more serialized, detailing the events of the White House and the presidential staff. Part of what makes the series so intriguing is its unpredictability and twists in the storyline. Episodes are fast-paced and dialogue is intensely captivating. Each character reacts differently to situations and Washingtons performance as Pope is prolific: unlike some characters seen throughout television, Pope is intelligent and outspoken. According to Tvbythenumbers.com, the Apr. 3 episode of Scandal was number one in the 10 oclock hour, averaging nearly nine million viewers, outranking CBSs Elementary and NBCs Parenthood. As the third season drew to a close, the presidential election ends with Grant winning for a second term. In order to win, however, he has to make an ultimate sacrifice. Meanwhile, Olivias mother, Maya (Alexander) suffers after her plot back-

fires, and the fate of Olivias crisis management firm is left unkown after Olivia makes a perilous decision. Lives are in danger and nothing is set in stone as everything changes in the finale of Scandals season.

The Blacklist
(Monday at 10 p.m. on NBC) Starring: James Spader, Megan Boone, Ryan Eggold, Diego Klattenhoff, Harry Lennix, Parminder Nagra, and Hisham Tawfiq. Try it if you like: Criminal Minds, Homeland, or NCIS. Debuting in Sept. 2013 on NBC, The Blacklist is a crime drama centered on the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The premise focuses on Raymond Red Reddington (Spader) who surrenders to the FBI on one condition: that he will only cooperate with Elizabeth Keen (Boone), a rookie special agent. Each episode targets a certain criminal on the blacklist,

and the FBI must apprehend them. Typically, the criminals conspire to kill innocent people with dangerous schemes and weapons. There are almost always car chases, fight scenes, and explosions. In an article about the series, Us Magazine said that [The Blacklist] is an hour of emotional warfare and satisfying twists. Recently, a shocking revelation on the show is that Keens husband, Tom (Eggold) is working against the FBI and that she is his target. Viewers constantly wonder what Reddingtons intentions are, and why he acts like a paternal figure to Keen. They also are curious to uncover the identity of Keens husband. One thing is for certain: The Blacklist keeps people guessing. The Blacklist returned Apr. 21 with four new episodes, culminating with its season finale on May 12.

Once Upon a Time

(Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC) Starring: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parilla, Josh Dallas, Jared Gilmore, Robert Carlyle, Meghan Ory, Emilie de Ravin, and Colin ODonoghue. Try it if you like: Game of Thrones, Grimm, or Lost. The series is set in the fictional town of Storybrooke, Maine, where fairytale characters come to life. The Evil Queen Regina Mills (Parilla) cast a curse on the characters of the Enchanted Forest, sending them to Storybrooke,

where they have forgotten their true identities and become modern-day counterparts. Arguably, the most fascinating element to the series is the format of the episodes. Each episode focuses on a certain character and delves deeply into their lives through flashbacks. However, not every episode establishes new characters; some reflect on characters like the Evil Queen or Prince Charming and define them as people. During this season, the residents of Storybrooke must contend with its newest villain, the Wicked Witch of the West (Rebecca Mader), who is out to kidnap Prince Charming (Dallas) and Snow Whites (Goodwin) unborn child. The Wicked Witch has captured Rumpelstiltskin (Carlyle) and his girlfriend, Belle (de Ravin), searches for him. A pivotal character has died and Emma Swan (Morrison) desperately tries to stop evil once and for all. Once Upon a Time airs on Sundays, and the series will conclude its third season with a two-hour finale on May 11.

[a] vivid new voice for teens. The voice of the main character is strong as well, sounding like a typical teenage girl until the kidnapping traumatizes her and transforms her perspective on life altogether. Each time I shifted my body even a little, sick rose in my throat and my head spun [...] I felt like I was in the middle of a fire, Gemma narrates, after arriving in Australia. It is noticeable how vivid and detailed Christopher writes; her language often contains poetic undertones and strong figurative language. Readers will not grow bored or weary from reading the pages; things happen and the language is tragically beautiful. Throughout the duration of the story, readers will ask if Gemma will escape. They will wonder why Ty kidnaps her, and most importantly, if she will survive. There are mass amounts of praise for Christophers debut, and it is deservedly so. Not only was Stolen awarded the honor of being a Michael L. Printz Honor Book, but it also was the subject of a starred review for Publishers Weekly, wherein they stated that [Stolen] is an emotionally raw thriller . . . a haunting account of captivity and the power of relationships. Christophers debut novel shows the effects of Stockholm syndrome and is a book that every teenager should read. It teaches age-old morals in that nothing is what it seems and that strangers cannot always be trusted.

You saw me before I saw you. Lucy Christophers debut novel begins with that chilling opening line, and immediately, it grabs the readers attention. Stolen is narrated by Gemma Toombs, a 16 yearold girl, who is the only child of a rich, prestigious family. Wrapping up her vacation in Thailand, Gemma is ready to embark on her journey back to England, until she meets Ty. Ty is 24 years old, and he wants something from Gemma. Before she knows his truest intentions, Ty drugs her coffee and kidnaps her. Afterward, Gemma awakens and realizes that she is in the middle of the Australian outback. She is in a tiny house with Ty, and he will not let her go. Stolens best feature is the epistolary format of the novel; readers will identify and sympathize with Gemma. Keep in mind that Stolen is a letter to [her] captor. The epistolary format also emphasizes the universality of Gemmas story, and enhances its message: one cannot always trust others, and that not everyone is nice. he National Basketball Association had an incrediblyintriguing 2014 season. From the worst losing streak in NBA history to multiple teams fulfilling their expectations, the NBA playoffs for 2014 were officially set Monday night, April 14. The Eastern Conference had a surpriseone seed going into the playoffs. The Indiana Pacers finished one game ahead of the two-time defending champion Miami Heat to receive the one seed and home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. Along with the Pacers and the Heat, the Eastern Conference lineup includes: the Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Bobcats, and the Atlanta Hawks.

The Pacers will play the Hawks for their first round matchup. The Western Conference, led by the San Antonio Spurs, was no surprise to anyone. The Spurs have dominated their conference for many years, with head coach Gregg Popovich establishing a lineup that can constantly challenge any team. Following the Spurs in the Western Conference are: the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Dallas Mavericks. The Spurs will face the Mavericks for their first round games. I believe the Eastern Conference will be overcome by the Big Three of the Miami Heat, including LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh. All three provide big threats on both the offensive and defensive ends of the

court, and they provide match up problems for teams when trying to defend them. The Indiana Pacers seem to be the only team that can provide a challenge in stopping the Heat en route to their third straight title. The Western Conference can go three potential ways: The Spurs can continue their dominance and advance to the finals. Also, the Thunder with the duo of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook can overcome the Spurs dominance and win the conference. Lastly, the Clippers could potentially pull an upset with Blake Griffin and Chris Paul providing a big offensive push. Finally, the Finals will consist of a matchup of the Miami Heat versus the Oklahoma City Thunder. The NBA Finals begin June 5, which features a 7-game series to crown a champion.

he girls and boys lacrosse teams are both off to a strong start this season. The boys are 11-2 so far this season, including beating rival Cumberland Valley 10-2. As Carlisle Sentinel reporter, David Rung pointed out in his article, Lacrosse Notebook: Carlisle boys clicking on defense through early games, The way the Carlisle boys defense is playing is just too much to ignore. The Herds defense gives up an average of only 2.2 goals per game. Their defense has allowed the team to succeed in conference play. For the offense, they score an average of 11.7 goals per a game. Leading scorers are freshman George Faller and senior Max Breschi. It has been so great to be accepted into a team of almost all juniors and seniors and for them to trust me already is an honor, said Faller. A few big games are coming up for the Herd. head battle with great competition until the final buzzer, said senior Taylor McGrath. They beat Hershey last season for the Mid-Penn Conference championship title. The Herd defeated them again 10-6 on April 24. Their last game is against Mechanicsburg on May 5. For the girls, they are now 9-4 after tough losses to Cumberland Valley and Lower Dauphin. The offense is led by junior Rene Morrow who has scored 69 goals after 13 games. We have more of a will to compete and push each other on the field no matter what the score is. We definitely gained confidence and the determination to dig deeper than we have years in the past, said Morrow. The girls are confident in their chances for the season. I believe that we will make it to districts this year, said junior Jamie Fhrom. Teams like State College, Hershey, and Cumberland Valley all have a lot of talent that the Lady Herd is looking to beat. Their last game is against Elizabethtown at home on May 8.

High school students help coach young kids in different sports

everal high school students are volunteering at local organizations to help coach kids sports teams. Sophomore Justin Mitchiner and junior Jacob C h e e s e b o ro u g h coach a soccer team of kids ages 3-6 at the Carlisle Barricks. Mitchiner said, Ive been looking for somewhere to volunteer, and it

seemed like a dream job because I love kids and playing soccer. The boys plan out many drills for the kids to do while they are learning to play soccer and having fun. Megan Bisker also coached a elementary schoool basketball team during the winter since she wasnt able to be apart of the school team due to tearing her ACL. My favorite thing about coaching was seeing the kids

grow and become better basketball players, said Bisker. Amber Bybee has been coaching the USA Star cheerleading twinkles team for 6 years. Bybee said, I wanted to do it because I enjoy being with kids and helping them become better cheerleaders. Many high school students help at the YMCA and several other organizations. Not only do they help the young kids in their athletic ability but it also teaches them a few things. They learn more about helping out in the community and becoming better people.
