Feature Story
Suzanne Rochelin Strives to Further Education in Haiti

Throughout the year, Suzanne Rochelin packs her suitcase in Boston and travels to one of the most beautiful and ethnically diverse Caribbean countries in the world. Suzannes luggage does not consist of vacation supplies however, instead she brings along school supplies and other educational materials for the children of Haiti. Suzanne heads to Haiti with a mission. Suzannes passion for education is deeply rooted in her family. Her mother, Ghyslaine Rochelin, founded Centre Montessori de Dpio, an elementary school located in the capital of Port-au-Prince. Her mother instilled in Suzanne an innate appreciation for the transformational power of education and encouraged Suzanne that education is the way to end poverty On January 12, 2010 an earthquake devastated the country of Haiti. The destructions of the country and over 220,000 lives was an eye opening experience that compelled Suzanne and her mother to create Educate Haiti Now. When thinking about how I could most make a difference, I realized that Haiti has one invaluable resource its abundant populous, states Suzanne. Though considered a weakness, this characteristic can oftentimes turn into an advantage through the power of education. Thus, the best way to help all those severely impacted by the earthquake is to give them the tools to change their lives themselves. Suzannes mission in life is to provide children with the opportunity for education in hopes to help end the poverty epidemic in Haiti. Her compassion and unfailing perseverance is the driving force behind Educate Haiti Now. Suzanne and her teams goal is to hopefully reach a range of 4,500 to 6,000 children by 2019. While most are packing for vacations to find escape from work, Suzanne will continue to willingly take time to travel to Haiti to continue her mission with Educate Haiti Now

Board Founders: Suzanne and Ghyslaine Rochelin

Good morning ladies and gentleman, Today Im going to tell you a story. There was a little girl. She was one of nine children. She and her siblings were each fortunate enough to attend private school, but their parents had spent so much money on education, that the little girl rarely ate. However, the stomach emptiness she felt in the physical was being filled by the knowledge she was receiving. So you know I, that once little girl, do understand kids the kids that come to school with an empty stomach or kids who arent able to come to school because their parents cant pay. Not many people in Haiti will be able to afford education, and money should not be an issue for a child to learn. Several board members that appear here today, have the same story of triumph. The same story of how education transformed their lives. This is why we are here today. This is what we have to fight against. I know that this country is going to change if we really do something to make education different! I feel bad knowing when a parent wants to place a child into a school, but for money reasons, they will not be able to do so. We are making a change in the education sector here in Haiti. As we all know, we are achieving this goal each year through each of you, our amazing volunteers, and thank you. So the question we must ask ourselves is, how do we educate MORE children? The answer that I give to you is, by educating more teachers. There are three ways I have planned for us to have another successful year.

Number one, we need more volunteers to go through our Teacher Training Program. Within these following years our goal is to train about 30 teachers a year. If each teacher has a class full of 30 students, this would mean about 4,500 thousand children will be educated. Next, as we all know we rely solely on donations to fund this organization. Our goal is to get more fundraisers from individuals and corporations. We will do this by establishing a public relations platform. Let me explain. Our public relations platform will be in place in order to gain exposure on our organization. We want to let people know that WE ARE HERE! We want to show our efforts to the world, in hopes of touching the hearts of some amazing people and pushing them to become amazing volunteers. Ill prove it. Everybody pull out your phones. Look at it. Go to your Facebook or Twitter or whatever it is that you may have. Do you see those people, your friends? These are the people that you link yourselves with on a daily basis and those people are linked with their own list of friends, and so on. If we use word of mouth to spread the word, lets go to where the people are. Lets start with our friends. By creating a stronger presence on social media we are strengthening our platform. Lets hand out brochures to inform people about our organizations, lets work for more news coverage. These children deserve it. Finally, we have our conference in July for university students interested in education. I believe that this conference will be one of the best we have had yet. It is another opportunity to gain more volunteers and teach young adults about the challenges teachers face. We will empower these students to use their critical thinking skills. We want to educate, and prepare students for practical application of skills in their everyday environment and the workforce. I cannot thank you all enough for your efforts from this past year. When I see a child who comes into the school being aggressive, and after a few months of playing and interacting and teachers helping him, when I see that I say okay, I am proud of my team. We are able to make differences in these childrens lives. These children are little treasures to me and I know they mean the world to you as well.
