Objectives: Students will compare and contrast various forms of printmaking and printmaking processes. (2.1) Students will identify printmaking throughout history. (4.1) Students will analyze and apply the process of relief cut printmaking using linoleum blocks and gouging tools. (1.1-4) Students will successfully print 4 editions from their block. (1.4) Students will identify elements of art in their prints, such as contrast, texture and symmetry. (1.1)

Materials: Paper for sketches Pencil Eraser Linoleum block 4x6 Gouging tools Printmaking ink Subi paper Construction paper

Assessment Strategies: Questions and responses during presentation to show understanding. Individual monitoring during guided and independent practice (double-check comprehension). Rubric for the final project: scoring based on how well Objectives were met in the project. (Good effort; cleanliness and craftsmanship; successfully cut out areas to create a relief print; successful print of at least 4 to make an edition; composition of the image.) At the end of the semester, the final exam will include questions about Printmaking.

Guided Learning Steps: PowerPoint Presentation Introduce the art of Printmaking and its types. Relief cut is the process of cutting out pieces from a block, like linoleum. Other types are covered by overviewing its history in China, and different artists like Albrecht Durer and his metal etchings, or Hokusai and his woodcuts. Students see the different tools and processes used in relief printmaking, as well as learn vocabulary words. Overview and expectations of project will be discussed. Demonstration/Guided Practice After my demonstration, students will practice on a small, scrap block: they will draw their initials in reverse and carve out around the letters. They will practice using different tips for appropriate areas. Individual Practice (Project) [3-4 days] Students will research images and pick a reference or design for their block. It must be based on realism: no sports logos, not just letters, etc. They will then transfer the image to the linoleum block and cut away until the image is revealed. Covering in marker helps them see how it will print. On the last day, a demonstration on the inking process will be shown, and students will then print a minimum of 4 times on various papers, creating an edition of their print. They must label them as demonstrated with name, print number over edition, and date. Reflection Students will discuss their prints and design choices.
