Last Stand
Whoever said that bodybuilding magazines ever made
loadsa money wants their nuts cutting off (in the case of
a female, the lips will do) and using as earings! A little
explanation is needed I think.
You see putting a mag together takes all sorts of people.
Editors, sub editors, reporters, production and graphic
designers, layout artists, advertising, print setting, repro-
graphics, secretaries (hah) etc etc and a bundle more of
all sorts fancy names that come to mind. Someone
actually asked for a job once and said that he was a
reproduction graphics artist, I think - I thought that was a
man who drew pictures of people humping!?! But we
have plenty of that - he didnt get the job anyway.
Anyway, please remember that we aint got that many
here - you are reading the team now - me!
BIG 25
Yep its our BIG 25 issue you have an extra EIGHT
pages to boot! Please dont think that this will be hap-
pening every issue - are you kidding, I literally have to
sell my arse for the original 40 as it is now!
I am very proud indeed to be looking at this issue. No
matter what the critics say or have said, we are STILL
going and will try and continue to - even though, after
hearing from a friend that after he had asked if the NO
BULL was available in his store, was answered with the
statement, Mick Hart? I thought he was dead? You are
so very wrong my friend!
However, with all of the rain that we have had of late, I
must say that I did have a close call the other day trying
to get into my car - scared the shit outta me I can tell
you. My little brown starfish was winking more than
Marilyn Monroe ever did!
The NO BULL is here for a reason, in fact many rea-
sons. One of those is to take a punch at the bodybuild-
ing scene, even though we love the sport as much as
you. You must agree that the sport is and has been for
many years, taken the piss out of us - with the NO BULL
it will always be payback time - guaranteed! And to
answer the critics, if you dont like us, dont read us!!
OLYMPIA COVERAGE
My sincere compliments to our USA photographer, Eric
Freimanis for his coverage of the BIG show. A fine job
my friend. It took a lot of working together between me
and Eric, to bring this about and I am proud to give you
the finished result.
Ok I know it is a bit late, but please enjoy and remember
that to some we may be just a pain-in-the-side and in
fact I like that, but cmon, we do try and this time we
have done very well to be accepted into the BIGGEST
bodybuilding show in the world.
I would like to thank the organisers of that show, particu-
larly Wayne Demila for accepting us. Wayne, remember,
from little acorns, great Oaks grow! Thanks mate.
SUPPLEMENTS
I really love this subject and just have to bring it up one
more time. I am truly saddened to say that some people
are so gullable, thick and basically fucked dumb by
SOME companies.
One guy rang me just before Christmas and asked about
our whey protein as opposed to anothers. The other
companies whey was 20 more than ours. I explained
that BOTH whey proteins where made by the SAME
company but with different packaging. He didnt believe
me and said that he usually went on the fact that more
was better quality - how wrong you were and are mate.
I hope that when you read this that you chase up the
points and realise your mistake. My reaction - TOUGH
SHIT!
BOB KENNEDY - MUSCLEMAG
Apparently, Bob mentioned the NO BULL in a recent
issue of MuscleMag which I appreciate. He mentioned
several pointers (I have not read it yet - ahem) but one
of them was re. my regular usage of the F word. Plus
the F has gone on my typewriter - Ucking thing.
Its OK mate, I agree with you, I know I do, but there is a
reason for this.
As you know to well, in this game there are somethings
about the sport that cannot be explained; they make us
angry, you know, really piss us off and we TRY to profes-
sionally explain the reason as to why. For instance, the
publics reaction and ignorance to drugs in sport, the sup-
plement market, why mags dont sell as quick, judges,
questions like, I want to eat everything yet still lose
weight. Others like, I cannot understand it, I bought
your book, and still cant lose weight, yet they tell you
whilst they are on their cellphone, in the bar drinking
beer!! Get my point mate? Now thats just SOME of the
reasons as to why I use the swear words a lot. It just
makes me feel good!
I quote a letter from Bob sent to me in March 2000 which
is framed and on my wall, basically his words sum up
the NO BULL and I thank him for that most sincerely.
Dear Mick,
Youre back from Hell. Me too.
No Bull continues to get more and more outlandish,
coarse, honest and downright vulgar.
Congratulations.
Regards,
Bob Kennedy.
Now then, the letter means more to me

so right.

Last Stand
There have been many reports from around the world
which have a bearing on the matters I wanted to write
about. At stake are fundamental differences in views on
the nature of sport, on matters of the health of athletes
and on personal freedoms. The views of Bodybuilders
are not likely to be taken into account in any discus-
sions of official attitudes to drugs and, for the most part,
neither are the views of those athletes who compete in
other sports. It is the Establishment that dictates poli-
cies irrespective.
Men on Bikes - Again
A classic example of this situation is in Cycling. It was
clear from the events following the discovery of drugs in
the back of the chief coach of the Festina Team in the
1998 Tour de France, that almost all cyclists who
entered these long distant road races with any serious
chance of finishing in the top one hundred were using a
range of drugs, foremost among which was EPO the
drug that increases the number of red cells in the blood
and hence increases its oxygen carrying capacity.
Most of the coaches and managers of the various com-
peting teams were themselves ex-cyclists and they saw
nothing wrong in the riders using all the techniques
available to them for optimising their performances.
As one manager said, Riders use drugs to help turn
them into better athletes. Professor Bengt Saltin, the
Swedish exercise physiologist, said recently in
Copenhagen (at one of the many drugs in sport inter-
national junkets - organised by the Anti-Drugs industry)
that he started working in medicine when he was 20
years old and for 30 years he never ever found a
haematrocrit level above 45% to 46% and the norm was
42% to 43% but in the late 1980s he started to see lev-
els above 50% and even as high as 60%; this was
achieved by using EPO. In France over the last two
years we have been seeing the twists and turns of the
drugs in the Tour saga. After an enormously long wind-
ed investigation, all the evil men involved in the Tour de
Fance scandal including the Festina team leader,
Richard Verinque were in court at the end of October
and the prosecution was asking for the instigators of the
doping programmes to receive suspended sentences of
up to 20 months and fines of up to 2000. Hardly the
stuff of major crime, yet the investigation must have
cost millions, and do we seriously think that in 1999 and
2000 the Tour de France took place with all clean, drug-
free riders. That would be really naive. Lance
Armstrong of the USA was the winner in 1999 and 2000
and we are now hearing serious suggestions that he
was not entirely clean.
SHOCK HORROR!
The French newspaper Le Canad Enchaine secretly
filmed members of the US Postal team during 2000
Tour and picked up empty ampoules dumped by them
in a dustbin, why are cycling teams so careless in
where they dump there used gear? These ampoules
contained Actovegin made from calves blood, which, it
is alleged, will produce the same effects as EPO. The
drug is not illegal in France and is not banned by the
International Cycling Union, so technically Armstrong
and the members of his team could use it and he could
truthfully deny the use of any illegal drugs. At the
Festina trial, a former trainer, Antoine Vayer, said that all
successful road cyclists and Armstrong in particular
were using performance boosting substances. Vayer
said that Armstrong gathered strength on mountain
stages, which was humanly and physiologically impos-
sible. But bike men are now moving on to using syn-
thetic haemoglobin and if they thought that EPO was
dangerous, this is potentially lethal.
Whatever substances these men on bikes use, they
have my greatest respect. I regard what they do in a
ANTI STEROID LEGISLATION?
Yet again I am returning to that on going topic of Drugs; the controls on the supply
and use of performance enhancing substances and on medical techniques and treat-
ments. I have had great problems putting together this article because there are so
many things which I have been thinking about over the last few months. I wanted to
climb up on my soap box and have my say about so many thing that are happening.

race like the Tour de France as the most awesome dis-
play of strength, commitment and endurance in any
sport on this planet. I think they are Supermen, and the
guys who attack them and drag them through the courts
couldnt ride a bike around the block. It is the funda-
mental difference between the talkers, the politicians
and the doers.
Italian Cheats
Another man who has been campaigning against drugs
in sport has been Alessandro Donati head of research
fot the Italian Olympic Committee. Before departing for
the Olympic Games this year the whole of the Italian
Team of 538 athletes was required to provide samples
of urine and blood. All the samples were tested for the
usual drugs and the athletes had taken normal precau-
tions to ensure that they did not test positive, but
Professor Donati tested for other things. He reported
that 61 athletes had very suspiciously high levels of
HGH. There is as yet no accepted test for this sub-
stance but the use of supplementary sources of HGH
can reasonably be deduced from an examination of
blood samples. Five of Italys thirteen gold medal win-
ners were among these 61. The results were leaked to
an Italian newspaper. The Italian Olympic Committee
prevented Donati attending the conference in
Copenhagen because they did not want him to speak.
So they did not want this to leak out.
But how many others in Sydney used illegal sub-
stances. I dont know the answer but it would have
been large numbers, of that we can be sure. During the
last year because of the Olympic games, the demand
for drugs in Australia has sored and prices have trebled.
Donati has been a pain in the side of the sports organ-
izations in Italy because of his uncovering drug use and
corruption, it was he that uncovered the fact that no
Italian footballers failed tests for steroids because the
laboratory lost the results. But unlike many in the
international media I do not wholly applaud his efforts.
He is very much an academic, not a performer.
The Drugs in Sport Debate
This has been a big year for the Drugs in Sport debate.
It always is during Olympic years. As always there are
the usual pronouncements from the sporting
Establishment about cheats and level playing fields
but after the antics of the Australian authorities in trying
to ensure a drug free Games, the subject has generat-
ed paranoia among all those anti-drug commentators.
The Olympic Games are over for another four years
and that, at least, has calmed down some of the steam
and hysteria generated by the anti-drugs industry. But
remember that it was at the time of the last Olympics in
1996 that anabolic steroids and other substances were
brought within the remit of the Misuse of Drugs Act,
upsetting the availabilty of genuine products, increasing
the amounts of fakes going the rounds and creating
more hassle.
It seems to be my lot to become ever more depressed
by antics of the Establishment in general. We are con-
stantly presented with reminders of the extent of the
incompetence of our leaders, whether it be how they
organise the running of the railways, run the health
service or throw money down a deep drain in
Greenwich above which stands a structure known as
The Dome. But whatever happens they remain arro-
gant supremely confident of their abilities and insist on
their perceived right to tell us how to live our lives. Now,
we hear strong rumours going the rounds in the UK
which the intention of cutting off the availability of per-
formance enhancing drugs. Now the Establishment in
sport is pressing for changes which will make the sup-
ply, possession and use of anabolic steroids one of the
most serious crimes on the statute book. The drugs will
be re-classified as Class A, alongside heroin and
cocaine and then mere possession could lead to a
prison sentence. It is almost too incredible to contem-
plate but these stupid old farts will still want to do it.
How have they reached their absurd position?
The Drugs Czar
Recently, I was reading a report in a Sunday newspa-
per for which the reporter spent several days travelling
the country with the Drugs Czar, Keith Hellawell. One
of the places they visited was a drugs rehabilitation cen-
tre in Liverpool where volunteers were offering advice
and help over the phone to people all over the UK and
abroad. The callers told similar stories of addiction and
all the attendant problems of shame, misery and lies.
The efforts of the volunteers were all very praiseworthy.
But what was different about this facility was that it was
the Council for Involuntary Tranquilizer Addiction.
All these people were suffering from an addiction to
substances which were perfectly legally prescribed for
them by doctors. As Keith Hellawell said, ...just
because it is legal and prescribed doesnt make it safe.
We could suggest, conversely, just because it is illegal
and not prescribed doesnt make it dangerous. Later, in
Teeside, they met teenagers and parents who wanted
treatment centres to wean the kids off heroin, but all
that could be offered for the present was words. Keith
Hellawell is often considered reasonably liberal with his
views on recreational drugs, but his public pronounce-
ments are often dictated by Tony Sincerity Blair and
Jack The Last Straw and they are concerned primari-
ly about what they think wins and loses votes. Just like
Doris Karloff (the anorexically challenged Ann
Just because it is legal and prescribed doesnt make it safe.
We could suggest, conversely, just because it is illegal and not prescribed
doesnt make it dangerous.
Widdecombe) who thought (wrongly) that what the pub-
lic really needed was zero tolerance approach. They
are afraid of even thinking about being easier on drugs.
Keith Hellawells primary principle has been that most
attention must be given to those drugs which constitute
the most serious risks to health and contribute most to
criminal activity as users to try to generate the substan-
tial amounts of cash needed to feed an expensive habit.
What has all this got to do with Bodybuilders, you may
well ask? At present anabolic steroids, plus HGH,
Clenbuterol, etc. the substances of most interest to
Bodybuilders, are controlled within the terms of Misuse
of Drugs Act as Class C substances and, at the time of
writing, it is still only an offence to manufacture, import
or possess if you have an intent to supply. In principle,
you can have several thousands of pounds worth of
gear in your possession for your own use, but in these
days it is likely that you may have to prove that the prod-
ucts are for personal use rather than the state prove
that you were a dealer; in other words, guilty until
proved innocent.
Keith Hellawell has rarely made any pronouncements
on performance enhancing drugs because they do not
present a particularly serious threat to health, do not
add to, or create, crime waves, nor do they threaten the
stability of our society. So within the areas that Keith
Hellawell works they are of little importance. Also, I
heard of one senior police officer who, when presented
with a file concerning three Bodybuilders supplying
each other with gear whenever one of them was waiting
for a delivery from the local dealer, and being asked to
take action, became quite agitated. At the time, he was
dealing with what he considered to be a minor epidem-
ic of heroin, cocain and ecstasy and he was not pre-
pared to chase after three Bodybuilders. His actual
words are quite unsuitable for printing in a family publi-
cation such as this! The problems of recreational drugs
are not problems of steroids.
Steroids as Class A Drugs
During the Olympics, there were thousands of media
men and women in Sydney, all wandering around trying
to dig up THE STORY which was going to make their
name and guarantee a lucrative future in journalism,
and what better subject to delve into than DRUGS.
They hunted high and low. We will search for them on
the beaches, in the training grounds; we will search for
them in the changing rooms, in the toilets, in the cafe-
terias and in the shuttle buses. We will never give up,
they said. They didnt actually find much but they
reported every rumour, every suggestion or innuendo,
every suspicious performance. If anyone did well, they
had to be on something.........
So what was it? Why did a young Dutch swimmer have
webbed feet? The Australian Authorities had been
quite paranoid about drugs for months before the
games and allegedly tested every athlete who entered
the country. Michael Verroken, director of the ethics
and anti-doping unit of UK Sport applauds the
Australian Draconian laws, the Uzbeki official arrested
in Sydney for importing a banned substance could, if
found guilty get a prison sentence of 5 years. She
wants to see a similar approach here with coordinated
action between government, sports officials, police and
customs and excise to make any handling of perform-
ance enhancing drugs a very serious matter. Britain is
a soft touch she says. You only have to say, Im a
bodybuilder and these drugs are for my own personal
use and you can bring in what you like.
You notice that it is bodybuilder who does the bringing
in. It could be a tiddley wink player and you could still
bring them in if they were your own use. But now Ms.
Verroken expands the problem by adding, In a recent
survey, steroids came third in a list of drugs regularly
offered in schools; young athletes do not have to look
far. This makes the government start to take notice.
This is exactly the approach adopted in the USA to get
steroids controlled in 1990. We have got to do it to pro-
tect our kids from these evil drug dealers. And in the
USA it was subsequently shown that the alleged use of
steroids in schools was not actually true! So now it is
kicked back into the court of the Drugs Czar. But who
did this recent survey? Is this real? Do kids really get
offered steroids in schools? I have no knowledge of it.
It is very doubtful if they were offered any real stuff.
Now, UK Sports and others are pressing for steroids
and other drugs to be raised to Class A status and then
mere possession - certainly in the quantities needed for
a typical cycle - becomes an almost automatic prison
sentence.
Clearly, there are in the UK two groups acting for quite
different reasons to try and direct government policy on
performance enhancing drugs.
A - Those who are concerned with the effects of drugs
on health, on levels of crime and on civil stability.
B - those who want to eliminate drugs from sport and/or
make UK Ltd. look squeeky clean on drugs. It is, per-
haps, only fair to point out that if B achieve their objec-
tives in terms of legislation, then the problems of A will
increase.
Recreational Drugs
Until the last year or so and the mysterious acceptance
of Bodybuilding as a sport by the International Olympic
Commitee, all the sports authorities - not the athletes
and the players themselves, just the administrators -
.... there are no doubts that the most serious problems and the most marked effects on
society are caused by two perfectly legal drugs - tobacco and alcohol.
Together these two still account for 140,000 premature deaths each year in the UK
have pourned scorn on Bodybuilders and probably will
continue to do so. So, until now, use of drugs by
Bodybuilders themselves and for those concerned
about drugs on the streets - recreational drugs not
drugs in sport. In this context, there are no doubts that
the most serious problems and the most marked effects
on society are caused by two perfectly legal drugs -
tobacco and alcohol. Together these two still account
for 140,000 premature deaths each year in the UK; plus
large amounts of lost time, health costs etc, treating
those suffering from the effects of these two sub-
stances.
Anyone concerned with rehabilitation will tell you that
the drugs which cause them the most problems of
addiction and anti-social behaviour are: 1 - alcohol, 2 -
alcohol and 3 - alcohol;. In comparison all others are
trivial. But few politicians or bureucrats would seriously
propose the criminisation of either alcohol and tobacco
from considerstion, then the drugs of most concern to
Keith Hellawell and others involved in the treatment are
cannabis, heroin, cocaine and ecstasy, plus a few oth-
ers which are often derivatives of the same basic sub-
stances.
Keith Hellawell is concerned about establishing proper
treatment centres for those hooked on any drugs - he
does not believe that prison is a suitable remedy -
improving education and reducing demand. He works
at this while the media invents the News. They search
the toilets in Parliament looking for micro-grams of
cocaine, argue that cannabis and as he says, pretend
that ecstacy is killing young people in droves.
The Problems Ahead
So what would happen if steroids were raised to Class
A status? It will certainly make things more difficult for
those who want to use these substances and it will
increase crime - then it will be an offence to possess
under any circumstances, so that alone creates a new
crime. But now dealing will be a serious matter handled
only by serious professional criminals. Let us list some
of the effects.
1. It will not make any difference to the use of per-
formance enhancing drugs in sport. This seems so
obvious but those in favour of legislation, this does not
matter. They will say that legislation will solve the prob-
lems. In the USA steroids and similar substances are
classified as Class III drugs but it is an offence to pos-
sess even for your own use, as well as to deal in these
products. It is even an offence to incite someone to use
these drugs by writing about them - so Americans
always state that any written advice is for entertainment
only. Since 1990, the USA has gaoled a number of high
profile Bodybuilders - and we have no idea how many
other unknown (by us) Bodybuilders have been incar-
cerated. And in the same period it is accepted that use
of anabolic steroids and related substances has actual-
ly increased. SO criminalisation does not stop con-
sumption. However, few, if any athletes in Olympic
sports have been gaoled. There is court action going
on at this moment in the USA resulting from sugges-
tions by an ex-director of the USOC that failed drugs
test reults had been deliberatly lost or destroyed to pro-
tect high profile athletes. This critisism was raised in
Sydney and the USA is now being investigated by the
IOC - they are very reliable investgators being as you
may remember, the people who took bribes from
Americans to fix the venue for the Winter Olympics. But
some agents at the DEA are asking if there is any point
of gaoling othewise law abiding citizens just because
they have used some legitimate substances to help
them build more muscle and to recover faster from their
workouts. If there is any health risk from these drugs, it
is only to the users and even that does not appear to be
a very serious risk.
2. Raising the status of the drugs increases the
production of fakes as the black market price increases.
If anabolic steroids become Class A substances then
dealing will pass entirely into the hands of the same
people who handle heroin, cocaine and other hard
drugs. The numbers of users of steroids will vastly
inflate the totals of users of Class A substances and this
will require much extra spending to polics the new con-
trols. Based on Amercan experience, the precentage of
fakes will increase by at least 500% with a similar
increase in prices - even for the fakes. The increase will
result in more infections and a corresponding increase
in the number of Bodybuilders and sportsmen requiring
hospital treatment - in some parts of the USA the
changes in 1990 resulted in a ten-fold increase in infec-
tions and hospital admissions.
3. Prohibition does not solve anything - ref USA
1919 to 1933. There ia a mental block in the minds of
the legislators which cannot allow this fundemental fact
to penetrate. People will not stop doing things just
because some arm of the government says that they
must not.
4. The conflicting demands of the two groups
demanding action on drugs creates a strange anomaly.
Keith Hellawell does not think sending users of heroin
and cocaine etc to gaol serves any useful purpose
whatsoever - they should go to treatment centres. But
the sporting Establishment wants all possessors, users,
suppliers etc of performance enhancing drugs to be
dealt with very severely. So now you will get treatment
if you are a heroin using social drop-out, who has

Bodybuilder with a full time job, who pays his taxes and
causes no trouble to nobody - but - shock! Horror! -
uses anabolic steroids to help with his bodybuilding -
then it is the full weight of the law for you my lad!! It is
so ludricous that it is almost bound to come to pass.
Personal Freedom & Cheating
Again, I believe this whole subject is first one of per-
sonal freedoms. As with smoking, it is right that the
government tells us of the known health risks of our
habit, but that is the limit of their action. They should
not legislate to control smoking. Nor should they legis-
late to control performance enhancing drugs. But unlike
the case of smoking, there has been no serious rele-
vant research into the health hazards of using steroids
and other substances in the sorts of dosages used by
Bodybuilders and other athletes. SInce users are gen-
erally employing dosages way beyond the recommen-
dation of the manufacturers, it is regarded as unethical
to carry out research to confirm or deny the extent of the
health hazards. But even without this research, the
sports authorities condemn drug use on health grounds.
Although they claim it is cheating and
must be stopped. But what is cheat-
ing? Is it cheating to use EPO to
increase the number of red cells in
the blood in order to increase the oxy-
gen carrying capacity of the blood but
not cheating to use high altitude chambers
to train athletes and increase their red blood
cell counts by thismeans. In
the one case the cost is a
few hundreds or thousands
of pounds, in the second it
is millions! So the very
rich nations can do it and
the very poor cannot. Is
this a level playing
field? There are pro-
cedures involving cor-
ticosteroids as pain
killers which allow
injured athletes to
compete when they
shouold be resting.
These procedures are
perfectly legal in all sports
but the health risks are con-
siderable.
This has serious long term risks for
many athletes. It should not be permit-
ted. A recent report highlighted the
plight of 286 ex-premier league footballers who were
now crippled with osto-arthritis as a result of such treat-
ments and almost 20% in this survey were registered
disabled. What is likely to happen? I have no idea but
it will almost certainly be OTT and it will then take the
usual 50 years or more to get things changed. After all
it was the Defence of the Realm Act in 1925 which crim-
inalised cannabis and here we are 75 years later still
talking about it, even though upwards of 4,000,000 peo-
ple alive today, are, or have been users.
It was OK for Queen Victoria and I would not have
thought she had any serious health problems with it -
she lived into her mid-eighties - and she did not become
addicted to hard drugs.
There is so much more to say on the twists and turns of
this matter of the availability of drugs but it is doubtful if
anyone with the ear of the Sports Minister will say anyt-
ing other than theyve got to be banned, but hopefully
someone will point to the practical difficulties and sense
will prevail. Hopefully. What are your views?
Do you know that our great decision takers have now
spent more time talking about the possibility of building
a single railway from London to
the Channel Tunnel than it took
the Victorians to build the whole
damned railway system! And we
should have confidence in their
abilities to order our lives? Who
are they really kidding?
Next month, I will tell you a story and I
will comment on future develop-
ments in performance enhance-
ment.
Keep training and I am
sure that you will get
there.

Nice Pic eh Joe??
Dont know what I want!
I am currently trying to improve my upper body with
weightlifting, I do a lot of racquet sports and karate
but would like to have a more defined and stronger
physique. I'm currently 31" waist with 40" chest, I
look fit but not as much muscle definition as I'd like.
I am weight training at least twice a week doing a
warm up set of 12-15, followed by 4 sets of 8 at my
almost heaviest wight, followed by a final set of 12 at
the warm up weight. I have read that drop sets work
very well, by warming up and then doing as many as
you can of the heaviest weight, then drop the weight
and repeat with no break in between, and do this for
about 5 sets. Is this a good way to build bulk, I am
reluctant to take any supple-
ments as I don't want to get mas-
sive, I would just like to get more
definition and a little bigger.
Jon
Address not supplied
Hey Jon,
Yeah in an ideal world mate! You
are doing a quite a lot of aerobic
work which will hold back any
major gains - mass wise - but as
for definition, you are on the right
track anyway. However, if you
increase your workout days by at
least one and also your protein
intake, your mass will increase
accordingly BUT remember only to
what your aerobic workouts will allow. If you want a little
more size, you have to decrease the calorie burning
exercises a little more.
You see, after the carbs have been burnt up AND espe-
cially if your bodyfat levels are low, you will start to burn
into your muscle tissue - a big mistake that most people
make quite a lot.
Remember also that taking supplements will not get you
THAT massive, but will assist you in getting the strength
and definition that you are wanting. Add to that the
health advantages that they will give you, especially with
all the hammering that your other sports are giving you.
There will be a definite lack of some vitamins and miner-
als. I would look into that mate.

I am a 17 year old male that ways 145lbs
and is 5'9. I have just started to lift weights
and I can bench 150 max, but I usually do
about 80 lbs with 10 reps. I wait 30 sec-
onds and do another ten and do the same
again. With my curls I use a one piece bar
and 20 lbs on each side. I do 10 reps and
wait 30sec. do another ten reps and wait
30sec. etc. How much pounds should I
move up and when? Am I doing all these
thing the correct way? I'm getting started
for baseball season, Im a left hand pitcher,
please help if im doing all these thing
right.

USA letter.
Hi mate,
No problem. You are doing fine, but remember
e.g. that when you feel the 20lbs at 10 reps
gets easier and easier, just take the weight up
to about 25 or 30. Then as that get easier,
drop the same again. As you can see, by the
laws of and logic you will get to a point where
your weights will be dramatically increased in
a very short time. This will obviously increase
the strength AND size of your muscles without
doubt. Only move up a weight that will slow
your reps a couple or so. Even this basic
training will show great improvement.
Enough Arm Work?
I started lifting weights back in December
and I am now doing whole bodybuilding
every other day. I do several types of exer-
cises for my upper body especially my
arms and chest. I do 3 sets of 12 reps for
each exercise. My question is, is this too
much for my arms or do I need to rest
them more? After I am done lifting I also
do 5 miles on the bicycle machine and 20
minutes on the treadmill. On the days I
don't lift I do 15 minutes on the bicycle and
30 minutes on the treadmill. Am I over
doing it? I do not want to gain any weight
so I am taking Amino 2222 Liquid and
Hydroxycut to burn some of the unwanted
fat. Is there other supplements that I
should be taking? I would appreciate any
advice you could give me thank you for
taking the time to read my mail.
Regulo Barajas
Hey Regulo,
Want to know how to make those arms grow?
Stop doing do much!! Believe me this is fact.
Train them only ONCE per week - that is all
and cut back on the aerobics a little - half it.
You may not want to get fat - OK, but you
have to let your body grow with rest. Far to
may people do FAR to much. You are throw-
ing the gains away by doing a 5 mile run after
training. Stop it and you will gain BIG style.
Believe me, I know this is fact - you will be
very happy with the results. Hope that I have
helped. Any more q&a please contact.
Saline Implants?
I have been working out for years,
and I have had pretty good
results. But I had to quit lifting
because I work in a car plant and
my left wrist really hurts when I lift
weight. I have to work, but huge
arms is my passion. What can I
do? Do I get some roids or do I
get some kind of saline implants?
I know it sounds really vein but I
loved the feeling I had when I had
big arms. I felt strong and confi-
dent, and I would really like that
feeling back. PLEASE write back
and tell me what I should do?

Hi Benjamin,
I know mate,
having big arms
is a real confi-
dence booster.
But I am afraid
that the only
way to get
them is to train
and the only
way to do that
is to get your
wrist problem
sorted out.
Have you been
to see a doctor
yet? If not, get to one asap. If it is that bad, a
cortisone injection may be the quickest way,
but not one that I would favour personally.
Roids? Yes Deca would be ideal for this prob-
lem, but unless you are going to train serious-
ly, I would not bother with the gear unless that
is so. So the best option is to have a check
up.
As for implants, well you would have to live
with that knowing that they are not real! My
opinion - not a fucking prayer mate sorry!
Stuck!
I am sick of being on the same bench
weight. What should I do to start lifting
more without being able to do two reps?
Hi Mate,
A good trick is to start with such a light weight
to warm up, then start your lifts at a much
higher weight than you would normally. This
will get you closer to your final lift and more.
Each time, try to
start closer to your
heavier weight
each time. This will
allow you to go
past it and further
on.
Another good tip is
to occasionally try
your final lift weight
HIGHER than nor-
mal so that you
dont get that final
taboo weight
stuck in your mind.
Its an old trick that
we used to use in
Olympic lifting.
Before we used to
go on, we would try
a much heavier
weight so that the
competition weight
felt lighter. In most
cases, it worked.
Testex or Viromone?
I have always used fairly low androgenic
gears in the past due to not wanting to
much water retention. But I am thinking of
taking something a little higher and my
dealer has suggested Viromone or Testex -
which is the better and for how long should
I stay on it? Is it really as high in andro-
gens as they say?
Hi Mate,
As you will probably know, both are propi-
onates, testosterones and both are good for
fast muscle gains but it is really a matter of
personal choice here. Even though the Leo
Testex is 250mg as opposed to the Viromone
at 100mg, both give different gains in reality.
This depends on the person AND what other
gears they may be on at the time.
From a personal view, in the past, I have
gained quite well using the Leo Testex, more
on the size aspect, but with the Viromone, I
find that my conditionis much harder and
tends to hold the size that much more. I have
used Viromone mostly with lower androgenic
gears such as Winstrol, Deca etc - with excel-
lent results.
With the Leo, I have put this with testovirons,
decas, dianabols etc - much more size of
course but again aiming for totally different
results. So as I say, it is a matter of personal
preference and really one of experimenation.
Why not try in with both high and low andro-
gens at different cycle times to see how you
fair. Say Leo with dianabol as one and
Viromone and Deca as another - small stacks
but you will be surprised at the difference it
can make.
Also, you can swap one high with a low and
vice versa - all safe but you will most probably
see just how your body reacts to the differ-
ences.
A good point to note with propionates, espe-
cially Viromone, you need to be taking a shot
every couple of days as it is the system for
only a short time. A example with testoviron:
Every 5 days, one shot of testoviron but propi-
onate, one shot every third day to be really
effective.
With Winstrol, I would put the propionate in
even every second day, with Winstrol jabs
every third. All fast acting, in and out withing a
few days. I like this system as I can see a dif-
ference quite quickly especlally if your bodyfat
levels are low.
Give them a try, either way, but be assured
that you will be quite safe even at these
dosages.
Beauty fades, but implants last forever!
Well I warned you I was comming
Do we really need
a LEG
UP?
Bodybuilders? A leg up? I thought that we did
simply because the sport has turned, well basi-
cally shit of late! Shows are getting less and
less attended, magazines are dying at a faster
rate, supplements are getting shitter by the
day and whats more worrying than anything
else - the backstabbing has reached heights
that, in reality, everyone is piss sick of, espe-
cially me - Im sick of hearing about it!
BUT - when I think about it - NO, we dont need
a LEG UP at all - leave us the fuck alone so that
we can get back to what we were used to:
ENJOYING IT!
The Ive Had My Bike Pinched Club - Annual Meeting
At first, I started to write this article with all the intentions of raising HELL YEAH!! Yknow,
the old Rally Round Speech of 2001 - an effort to boost the moral of us bodybuilders. I suppose it was the time of
the year and all that that inspired me at first, then, after writing for a few hours and running out of Gin, I pressed
DELETE and thought FUCK IT, yes simply that - and I will tell you why. There are many people that I admire (and
some I dont) that have tried to inspire a Gathering of the masses, a collection of guys in authority if you like who
have tried to get the guys to rally round and fight the good cause of the sport - for the good of us all. You know what
I mean, but it just aint gonna happen - EVER! The earlier we realise it the better for us all, so that we can all stop
looking for a special time or a re-birth of the sport - just leave it as it is - a lone sport for individuals who really want
to do it!
Mick Harts NBC - 12
Mick Harts NBC - 13
OK there are the special exceptions to whom I give my
total admiration indeed. Perfect examples are people
such as Ron Ball and David Gentle. Both have dedi-
cated themselves to the sport for life and have shown
themselves not only to be perfect ambassadors to the
sport, but also choose to help others at the same time.
In Ron Balls gym, there is I believe an air of cama-
raderie that is so rare as it is a gym of the old style.
People train with winning in mind and also have the
added bonus of support not only from the staff at the
gym but also from the members of the gym - period!
This is indeed rare but even better when all around the
gym, in town, the competition are falling like flies. Ahhh,
tradition can be a nice thing - I am proud of those peo-
ple. And to boot, as far as competition attendance, I
believe that there will not be many to match that of Mr.
Ball - he is a true supporter who believes that by sup-
porting and attending, he will contribute to the continua-
tion of the sport. He knows that unfortunately that is not
to be so - sadly. But I do so admire his reasons, I only
wish that there were more with the same beliefs.
David Gentle is another great example of dedication and
determination. He has been in the sport now for about a
thousand years (that right Dave?) and has constantly
helped and advised countless people to which many will
not admit that his help has assisted them - I think that
this is so true, so sad but he will agree with me here I
am sure. All his good work has, in many cases,
remained unrewarded - sadly.
Two perfect examples that people DO NOT realise just
how much that they have contributed to the sport, but
their words (in many cases) fall on deaf ears - as do
many of ours too! You see, it is these type of people
that should be getting all the backing, but do they get it -
not a fucking prayer! What I do say is please continue to
write as good as you do because at least you are hitting
where it hurts and people DO read EVERY page of this
mag. Your contributions to the NBC are essential read-
ing.
MY REASONS?
The reasoning behind my article is simple - please dont
waste any more of your precious time lads on trying to
unify the sport. Why? Well why should you! Stick to
who you know and those who care and listen to your
vast knowledge - they will benefit most from it.
It is not only these two lads, but also me and many oth-
ers who have also had this dream, but it is time now not
to pull the finger out, but put it back in and hope that
bodybuilding will drop back into the sort of nice secrecy
that we used to have. It was better that way; to much
public interest and the damage was already set into
place. The general public always try to destroy what
they cannot understand - always has done, always will.
You see, bodybuilding cannot and will never be a mass
sport driven by a collective strength. It is an individual
sport that has actually, I believe, been damaged by its
immergence into the public spotlight. Most just dont
give a fuck whether or not bodybuilding hits the big time
or not - I for one most certainly do not.
Another good example is on the subject of supplements.
No matter what advice you can give to some people,
they will never, ever, take it in. OK, I know that this mag
is pro gear, but the best advice that I can give to a
beginner is not to use the gear until ALL options are
exhausted, it really is the best way. Utilising the essen-
tial supplements with ample training and rest and the
right attitude is top grade advice for anyone, but some
will not listen and choose to opt for the quickest and
most direct route - or so they think - loads of gear all at
once and as often as possible. Result, problems on top
of problems - who gets the blame - us!!
Tell someone that supplements will give a sound basic
coverage for the body over a period of time but be
patient as it will take time, and they are not happy. YET,
tell them a bunch of lies and that supplements are the be
all and end all of bodybuilding growth - guess what, they
believe you - you cannot win if you want to be honest
and tell people facts! Beats the shit outta me!!
At the end of the day, all we become is cannon fodder
for the media and ultimately, we are seen as nothing
more than pill popping, jab sticking dartboard junkies -
that is not fair, I think that you will agree, well unless you
are one of the original fuck wits in the first place.
BASICALLY............
OK I like a good moan but it really is a matter of getting
back to the old ways in my opinion. Even not so long
back, or rather as far as when hard drugs where not so
involved in the sport and shit counterfieted gear was not
so blatantly obvious. Look at it another way, what has
happened these last few years? We havent had the
problem of simply arguing whether or not a winner was a
winner or that the second place was as it should have
been - no - what we are hearing is that people have
been had the shit kicked out of them (deserved or not),
gyms taken over by companies, friends back-stabbing
friends and familes, once proud bodybuilding champions
totally hooked and FUCKED on Nubain for life!
Competitions, closing down days before the competitors
have even had a chance to walk the boards showing
what they have achieved with the months and months of
preparation - what a boost for the future of the sport eh?
Makes anyone want to train for the next one - NOT! Its
no wonder the crowds are getting thinner and thinner -
and deservedly so too.
In the end, there is nothing that we can do at all but just
hope that things will get back to normal, but we all
have an opinion of what normality is. Being in a sport
where many of the people involved are kicking the shit
out of each other, mainly based around money and profit
again, is not really one that we ought to be advertising
as one based on honour - as there is none, only to one-
self and family.
Lets see what 2001 brings, but I am afraid that the hori-
zon does not look that inviting - we shall see.........

The proverbial

is going to be

Training techniques: the importance of training the largest muscle groups
In order to create a highly anabolic environment within the body, it is important
that the largest muscles of the body (primarily those that are involved in the
squat, deadlift, and even leg-pressing to a large extent,
i.e. the muscles of the thigh, hip and lower back) are trained and stimulated to
grow. Why? Since these muscles comprise such a large amount of the total
muscle mass on the human body, any training stress of
sufficient intensity to cause these muscles to grow will also place great stress on
the body overall.
These muscles are an integral part of the physiology and mechanisms of your
entire body, i.e. they do not work on their own, and the ENTIRE body is placed
under stress and the need for growth and recuperation is generated; for exam-
ple, you need the digestion in your stomach to supply your muscles with nutri-
ents, and their will be a greater demand for nutrients from very large growing
muscles, and so your stomach, for example, could well adapt and become more
efficient at digesting food, i.e. the entire body adapts including the muscles. The
effects of training ARE that far-reaching.
The stress thus placed on your body is obviously greatest from expending
enough time and intensity training the largest muscles of your body. This cre-
ates a highly anabolic environment in the entire body, due to the need
created in the body for extensive growth and repair of muscle tissue, which will
translate into greater gains from the training of your smaller muscle groups, since
the body works as a whole, and not in separate, isolated parts.
The Importance of Protein and Water
In order for your body to adapt to training stress, it is vital that you are ingesting
enough protein and carbohydrate, and as I mentioned in the previous article, most
people find that a high protein diet, with lower relative carbohydrate levels, is bet-
ter for them: this is something that you have to experiment with for yourself.
Also as I have mentioned before, water is a vital component in the diet, and you
can't really get enough of it when in heavy training and consuming plenty of pro-
tein. Not only does it serve the most important purpose of being the most abun-
dant constituent of muscle (muscle cells are 70% water, with the rest being mostly
protein), but large amounts of water also helps to flush waste products from your
system, and helps avoid stress on the kidneys in this way. Also, water can be
used to help flush nutrients (e.g. amino acids, vitamins etc.) through your body,
which enables these nutrients to bathe all your tissues optimally and ensure their
optimum health, which is vital for good gains: this could not be achieved in a low
water intake environment. It's also important to note that the amino acid L-gluta-
mine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue, and so it's well worthwhile to supplement your diet with extra
L-glutamine.
The importance of a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement cannot be over-
looked either, as the growth processes cannot proceed unless all factors neces-
sary for growth are present, and these include vitamins and
minerals, in addition to the necessary amino acids supplied from dietary protein,
and other dietary constituents.
With and Without Steroids?
As I have written before in previous articles, as much as possible should be
gained from natural training before steroids are used, and this can mean as
many as 8 or 10 years of natural training (i.e. without anabolic drugs).
When steroids are used and the body is already very fit from years of training in
the gym, then the steroids have a much greater and more beneficial effect than
they would have on a previously untrained body, and this is due to the difference
in initial fitness between the two: the fitter and stronger the body is to begin with,
then the better it can use the steroids and other anabolic drugs that may be
used.

ON THE DOOR
LOOK OUT- darryl selbys.....
Well I was watching TV the other night which is
usually the last thing I do, when something caught
my attention, it was a Doorman who had been
charged in 1998 with Actual Bodily Harm and
threats to kill. OK not much of a story, but to the
presenter hosting this show it was big news or they
wanted it to be. Go down to the courts on a daily
basis and you will see this in dozens of cases
everyday, with the run of the mill people. But this
happened over two years ago, did I also tell you
this came about when this Doorman was working
and fighting with two lads, who were hell bent on
fighting that night and they didnt care who with!
They also showed you statistics which made me
laugh my tits off, here they are.
They said you are:
30% more likely to be attacked by a total stranger
when on a night out.
A high percentage to be attacked by Doorstaff!
What the fuck, wheres the percentage, they
showed none! Don't get me wrong it does happen,
but why say it if it they have no statistics.
This TV programme accused the Doorstaff of polic-
ing the nightlife. Of course we do), we do this in
conjunction with the Police, that was the whole idea
of the Door registration along with cleaning tip the
Door Supervisors. Doorstaff are in control, this is
how you get a secure environment, you will never
get anyone who has a bigger personality than
doorstaff. We ooze with confidence, we know what
are capable of and we know our limits and we do
this to the best of our ability and this is how 60-
70% of our job is done.
NO BACKING!
There is very little backing from anyone when the
shit hits the fan or indeed when you get hurt, I have
been victim to this many a times and indeed have
so many of my friends. This year alone for me and
my partner has been hell. I got arrested after a

ON THE DOOR
fight broke out (after work). It all started
when I was at work in the local nightclub, a
fight errupted. We put the lads out, finished
the nights work, drove round to the local pizza
shop, got my pizza and was walking back to
the car, when yeah you guessed it these two
lads we threw out earlier, came around the
corner and walked straight into me knocking
my pizza onto the floor. If it had been anyone
else's pizza it would have stayed in the box
but of course it was mine and it had to go all
over the pavement. Anyway by this time the
lads were the best of friends and they
realised it was me who put them out, well sort
of, don't want to incriminate myself here!
Anyway we all ended up fighting in the street
and I get a left hook to the mouth and this
really pissed me of, any how this lad ends up
in a heap on the floor and his mate runs off
and the local police came along and I get
arrested and banged up for the night. I get
police bail in the monnng to attend back in six
weeks.
CHARGED!
The six weeks go by and they charged me
with GHB and I go to court. Then all of a sud-
den this kid turns up with six bloody witnesses
and Im thinking the shit really has hit the fan
here. This kid has doctors reports, dentist
reports and I know Im on a loser here BIG
time. So I change my plea from not guilty to
guilty and my barrister is saying time for jail
here. The Judge passes sentence and says
people like me deserve to go to prison and
shouldnt be on the doors! Hey presto 6
months in prison!
I get this big write up in the papers and
doorstaff get a further bad name. I apologise
to all the doorstaff, not for the bad write up but
for the ignorance of the people we rely on to
give out justice. So why is that? Hell well for
a start 3 months in prison, apart from my part-
ner, losing my job, a mortgage and my career,
as most or you will know that l am studying
Law!
My Door registration licence has also been
revoked, I won't work on the door again for
about 5 years, if I ever get one back. Would
you say this is justice? Prison is not easy and
its hell on your relationship luckily mine has
become stronger and pulled us together. I

T
wo years in row the Olympia
weekend has been held in Las
Vegas at the beautiful Mandalay
Bay, people travel from all over to
get their fix of muscle and this con-
test had no shortage of that. This
being my first Mr. Olympia I was awe
struck just from being there and all
the surroundings, then top it off with
13 magnificent bodybuilders and it
was truely an amazing sight.
F
or those who havent seen a
posedown, it can be quite amus-
ing at times. Youve got five men on
stage all trying to outdo each other.
Ronnie and the other four top quali-
fiers squared off against each other,
showing who was best and biggest.
Ronnie in the middle of the stage and
the others trying to get in and com-
pare themselves to the king, double
bis, back, glutes, abs, crab.... then
Nasser El Sonbaty comes from the

outer side while the others are showing off
the abs, pushes his way in between
Ronnie and others and growls and does a
crab pose while the other guys look on
and laugh.
I
n sixth place was Lee Priest
from Australia, at 54 and a
ripped 215 pounds. Lee
looked the best I have seen
him and felt he should have
placed at least in 5th. Fifth
place went to Nasser El
Sonbaty who was a lot more
chisled down then I have seen
him, yet I felt his symmetry was-
nt better than Lees.
F
ourth went to the only man to compete in three decades of
Mr. Olympias, Shawn Ray, who seems to be the man
who missed out somewhere in his past battles with Dorian.
Shawn looked great, you gotta love a guy who speaks his
mind about everything and this year was no different. In
the press conference, Shawn said he feels he cannot
win a Mr. Olympia because they use the same 12
judges every year even though they have about 50
qualified judges.
The same 12 that
picked Ronnie to win
2 years ago picked him to win last year, and now those same judges
are here again this year.
T
hird place went to Ken Flex
Wheeler, at one time thought
to be the next Mr. Olympia when
Dorian retired seems to be sliding
down the ranks. Flex did look
great, but the top 2 in my opinion
looked a lot harder in their
physique. In recent years Flex has
been known to blow up, but he
kept his composure and accepted
his award and gave the crowd a
smile and wave.
A
s the voice over the sound
system announces Kevin
Levrone in second, Ronnie
Coleman falls to the floor bent over, kneeling and crying. A sight to see
that made the hairs on your neck stand up. Levrone, who thought
about not competing in this years Mr. Olympia, came in the best shape
of his life. His symmetry was perfect, he was big, he was hard, he was
perfect...... for second place!
A
fter minutes of waiting, Ronnie finally
raised to his feet to accept his 1st
place medal and the Sandow trophy.
Ronnie Coleman was large and in charge
from the go - it is hard to
imagine a man so large
and ripped. He kept
the crowd raving for
more in his posing
routine as he
walked the stage
letting everyone
see his massive
physique. In the press
conference two days prior
a fan asked Ronnie Coleman
if he does anything differently,
psychologically and physically, he said not really, and gave us
a quote like, 'If you always do what you always done, you
always get what you always got'.
L
ike many other great champions in the Mr. Olympia,
Ronnie repeated for his 3rd straight win, only 3 men
have won in the past 16 years - 10 champions over 35
years of Olympia Competitions.
R
ounding out the
other competitors,
Markus Ruehl from Germany, a crowd favorite with his mass, just
missed the top 6 by one point. Markus was overlooked last year and is
looking to crack into the top 5. Markus visibly didnt agree witrh the
judges.
F
resh off his Night of
Champions win in New York,
Jay Cutler came in looking better
then last year but had to settle for
8th spot which was better then his
showing last year.
D
exter Jackson had to be one
who was overlooked in this
elite group. Dexter has made
great strides in his physique and
placings and was clearly sharp as
a razor at this event. He has had
a great year and was in several shows throughout which has to be
rough keeping your physique sharp for so long.
I
n tenth place, a newcomer to the Olympia making his mark, Orville
Burke just edged out Dennis James. In my opinion Orville should
have placed lower, his symmetry was out of whack, but damn, just look
at those lats!
Mick Harts NBC - 23
D
ennis James knocked down to
11th by a single point in this
tough field, looked impressive in his
first Olympia, pretty good for a guy
who just turned pro last year!
O
ne of my favorite competitors
and all around nice guy, the
Gentle Giant from Germany,
Gunter Schlierkamp, came in with
his massive physique and only got
12th. He is undoubtly a great guy
taking time to sign autographs and
snap pictures with fans. I got a
moment to speak with him the day
before at the Olympia Expo and the
guy is huge.
O
leg Zuhr came in 13th and didnt help
his small frame much in the free posing
round. Mind
you he is
short and
the stage is
wide and
deep; for
most of this
round he
opted to
stay at the
back of the
stage mak-
ing his
apperance
even smaller. He had a great routine with some classical music that
could have been better up closer to the fans.
I
t was a great show and a great time. I hope to be able
to go to many more Olympiad shows. If you ever get
the chance to go to a
Mr. Olympia or anoth-
er big show, go and
enjoy it. Bodybuilding
is a sport with not a
lot of support outside
of the magazines and
if people dont support
the shows the prize
money will drop and
the sport will lose
some great athletes!

What a great idea! Our thanks to the Sperm Bank
Deposit Society who have found a way of reducing the
ques of guys waiting to deposit. However, we have had a
few complaints from those who are not quite tall enough
and who have scraped their bishops helmet on the
bricks. Sorry lads, but you did say it was a jump that you
wanted - wasnt it?

It was actually a little scary trying to shoot this local Co-op
store (especially after they had been ram raided of late)
simply because of the downright, nay sheer cheek with
which they openly sell Coke. They just do not give a fuck!
We found out that you can buy quality Coke at about 1.25
per litre or a cheaper version for around 65p. Jeez, I
admire their balls - and it is on the shelves too! I dunno...
Coke - easily available
Apparently, but dont take my word for it, this Chemist

doing this for years now with no problem at all.
Remember that you heard it here FIRST in the NO BULL.

Former Mr. America, Mr. Universe and Mr. World, David
Draper, who is to be honoured in London, March 2OOI, at the
OHF Awards, was the quintessential bodybuilding idol of the
I96O's, those magic muscle years dominated by such body-
building stars as Frank Zane, Sergio Oliva, Boyer Coe, Franco
Columbu, Chris Dickerson, (first black man to win the Mr.
America) and the still competing legends Reg Park, and Bill
Pearl, and the newly matured Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Dave Draper's rugged handsome good looks, wide shoulders,
narrow waist and back spread, that even Arnold S. believed, in
his words to be The best in the business. His eye catching,
in vogue, long fair hair, resulted in World Wide fame and a 'nick
name' he hated, but stuck with him - The Blond Bomber.
Today, Dave still writes for the main man who made him
famous i.e. Joe Weider and can be checked out on line which
is, www.davedraper.com. Heres a part of his story.........
Dave, the youngest of three brothers, commenced school at an
early age, and according to Dave, never felt the desire for ball
games. Unlike his father who liked sports. Dave instead con-
centrated upon gymnastics from the ages of I2 to I6, and grew
up fast. Grew he certainly did, unlike most budding body-
builders who start off lean and aim to add weight and muscle
size, Dave Draper started off his physical odyssey, frankly a
fat kid known at first more for his chubby cheeky grin and big
bulky body (his words) rather than a man of muscle. He also
grew up fast taking on the responsibilty of getting married
when just I6 years old to Penny, eighteen months later having
a daughter Jamie.
At times introvert, almost shy, the young Dave Draper set out
to lose fat and gain some shape, as we said at first with gym-
nastics by I7 weighing I7Olbs at 6ft. According to Dave, he
became inspired by a muscle magazine cover and contents,
and thus took up training, working mistakenly, as many begin-
ners do, mainly on upper body, neglecting his long legs, result-
ing in a bulky 24Olbs bodyweight and large chest of around
5Oins, but thighs of just 22ins. So Dave, once aware of his
mistakes, worked harder on legs, and ultimately resulted in
reaching 2I inch arms, 54 inch chest, 33 inch waist and 28 inch
thighs - with the power to match the muscle size.
WORKING FOR MIGHTY JOE.
By the early 6Os spotted by Joe Weider in New Jersey, Dave
a former factory welder, was offered a job in J.W's New Jersey
office, soon being transfered to Weider's Santa Monica office.
Joe, never afraid of hyperbole, entitled him with the tag,
Worlds Strongest Youth. Dave was certainly stronger than
most, winning his first title, Mr. New Jersey at I9yrs of age.
There's no doubt he did owe J.W. credit for much of his even-
tual stardom, being featured in Weider's publications from front
cover to back page adverts, for OO7 Twisters Bars, and pro-
tein shakes, ENERTOL SUPPLEMENTS and similar now inno-
cent dietary aids (see later for diet). Articles about Dave, car-
ried such awesome titles as "Former fat Boy become Modern
Day Hercules. Dave may have been an introvert, but his writ-
ers never lacked for sensational adjectives. His fame brought
along multi offers from movie and T.V talent spotters, and Dave
was featured in a variety of media spots from small ads to
being M.C.in David and Goliath presents on T.V.
INNOCENT BODYBUILDING.
David considered the '6O's the zenith of Innocent bodybuild-
ing i.e. pre-massive steroid abuse and arrogant high paid con-
testants...... an "age of cameradie". Diet advice was simple,
eat plenty of protein, avoid junk foods. Dave ate from 4OO to
5OO gms of protein a day. Steaks, eggs and fish in the main
i.e. a classic hi-pro, low-carb regime. He did have a passion
for sea food. Unlike his main contempories, he did not drink
milk, (most like Larry Scott drank gallons, or took cream) only
water, to maintain his hard worked for definition and shape,
plus basic multi vitamin and mineral supplements. A body-
builders life really was simpler, requiring more WORK (see
later) and less knowledge of chemistry.
MUSCLE BEACH.
Mr Pecs, George Eiferman, former Mr. Everything in the USA,
introduced Dave to a gym around I963 in Santa Monica at
Muscle Beach, quaintly named The Dungeon (see later his
own description), such a place it almost resembled. No
chrome or music, just plenty of basic hard core equipment.
One obvious reason Dave Draper developed such awesome
power was the simple fact he trained with BIG powerlifters like
the fabled CHUCK AHRENS, STEVE MARJARIAN and others,
thus sissy weights were not allowed. Eify trained there as
once did the late lamented Steve Reeves. Draper worked out
there usually with his training partner Dick Sweet, although he
often exercised more or less alone or deep in his own
thoughts, six days a week, rotating body parts so that he hit
each group 3 times a week from 6am to 9am. He like Bill
Pearl, always trained early in the mornings - HOW THE
BLOODY HELL CAN THEY DO THAT?? My bowl of rice
crispies appear heavy at that time of the day, coming down

from a 27Olbs butter ball to 23Olbs hard defined muscle. His
motto all along was You had to stick with it, to succeed, with
desire being first on your list and dedication being the key.
DAVE'S DESCRIPTION OF THE DUNGEON.
Against a backdrop of Muscle Beach, Dave trained in the early
I96O's in "The Dungeon". This famous beloved relic once locat-
ed on the unspoiled shores of Santa Monica was relocated by
the encouragement of the city council to the underground
basement of a collapsing retirement hotel four blocks inland. A
very long steep and unsure staircase took you to a cavernous
hole in the ground with crumbling plaster walls and a ceiling
that bulged and leaked diluted beer from the old timer's tavern
above. Puddles of the stuff added charm to the dim atmos-
phere where three strategically placed 4O watt light bulbs gave
art deco shadows to the rusting barbells, dumbells and splin-
tery, handcrafted 2 x 4 benches and sagging milk crates.
You have no idea how proud I am to have this theatre and the
real life plays that unfolded day after day as part of my experi-
ence. It's pure gold. The magic didn't come from the pharma-
cist, it came from the soul, the era, the history in the making.
With acknowledgments to Muscle and Fitness for quotes.
Sounds almost as posh as my old gym. Made of tin, no heat-
ing, leaking roof, rusty bars, so cold your hands used to stick to
them. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be. D.G. Back to Dave.
Strength aquired by tough training he had in abundance, sam-
ple poundages, not necessarily maximum include a military
press i.e. strict overhead press - 3OOlbs, bench press - 45Olbs
(when world records were around 5OOlbs) dumbell flyes for
pectorals - 6 x IO x 65lbs. He used I5Olbs dumbells in incline
bench presses, did cheat lateral raises for deltoids using 6Olb
dumbells, Barbell rows with 4OOlbs and deadlifts with 6OOlbs.
His legs were exercised in the main with basic squats, using
pyramid principles i.e. start light and high reps, i.e. using
35Olbs for IO reps, then adding weight up to 45Olbs for lower
reps and dropping back to 35Olbs x IO reps.
Cutting up to lose forever his original fat frame, he avoided
'carbs' for I8 months, exercised hard, supersetted most muscle
groups and rested only long enough between sets to recover
his breath - the ultimate c.v.(cardiovascular) workout. He also
ran regularly 3 to 5 times a week. When training, he rarely
counted repetitions but just pushed himself to failure. In com-
mon with all champion bodybuilders, when Dave worked out,
his concentration was intense. There was never idle chatter or
conversation during exercises. He lost himself in his exercise.
Nor did Dave chose to discuss bodybuilding outside the gym,
prefering his other social activities and thoughts.
MUSCLE CONTESTS
Dave won the IFBB Mr. America in I965, his second contest.
In Hollywood the magazine exposure resulted in him being
snowed under with T.V. and movie offers, and work for com-
mercials for bleach (because of his blond hair) to his own T.V.
Show, Movies with Roddy Mc Dowell, and his main appear-
ance with Tony Curtis in Dont Make Waves, also starring the
late Sharon Tate, later murdered by the infamous Manson
Family. Dave said he only considered the movie, because it
Was sympathetic to the bodybuilder. In fact it is claimed
Sharon Tates stand in discovered David for the film, on a visit
to Joe W's office. Tony Curtis liked Dave enough to try to per-
suade him to join him in his next movie, but Dave was even
then not overly impressed by the Movie world and its lack of
morals.
In I966 Dave Draper won IFBB Mr. Universe, and Most
Muscular, plus Best Arms awards (Sergio Oliva won Mr World).
This same year in a poll in Weiders mag, Dave was voted 7th
All Time Top Bodybuilder with Larry Scott, premier Mr. Olympia,
being top. In great shape, Dave went to South Africa in I969
doing shows for REG PARK and the visits and experiece from
then on gave him an urge to travel.
NABBA UNIVERSE
Although I have always, and do so now, support ALL body-
building whatever the organisation or politics, I can claim some
authority, and more than average support for the NABBA
Universe competition. Its' 5Oth Anniversary was celebrated in
I998 where I had the pleasure of meeting up again and speak-
ing to the late Steve Reeves, Bill Pearl, Reg park and others in
attendance. This year 2OOO, Eddie Ellwood again took the
pro title for the 4th time equalling the record of Ed Kaway Out
of 5I shows, I've missed about 8 through either illness or Army
service, so you could count me as a supporter, reporting same
event for international magazines like Muscle Mag
International, hence some frustration when I can't get even
basic information (after 5O years, you would think they i.e.
NABBA know my address) without a lot of hassle. Hopefully
Jim Charles and Eddie Ellwood et al, have now put NABBA
onto a winning format, but enough of my cribbing.
Thus when I state that I97O was historic, it's not without some
thought. Always a fan , (since I948) I spoke to many con-
tenders on that glorious day in London. Including a more
mature Arnold, Boyer Coe (who's just had a triple heart by
pass), Chris Dickerson, Frank Richards, Al Beckles, Columbu,
Frank Zane, Reg Park and Dave Draper - making his first visit
to Britain. His coming was eagerly anticipated, already his
fame had spread. I liked Dave immediately, Oscar Heidenstam
later said of Dave, he was, A man very different from anything
one had imagined. A deep thinker, a charming mannered gen-
tleman and a true sportsman. Writer Colin Sheard said of
Dave, There is a clean wholesome quality about the man. He
is one of the most articulate men I have ever met. (Colin
Sheard was probably the most articulate writer H&S ever had -
in my opinion).
The results of the I97O NABBA Mr Universe are historic and
meaningful for all contestants. Arnold beat Reg Park (later
Arnold said he had trained harder for this one than any previ-
ous Universe contest, i.e. 4 hours a day, 6 days a week).
Dave Draper the blond tanned adonis came 3rd, although he
was so magnificent, that some prefered him to Reg, and no
one could doubt it was very close between the two. John
Bubb, best shape of his life came a respectable 4th place.
Oscar Heidenstam reporting the event in Health and Strength
said about class 1, Pandemonium broke out when the three
giants, (Arnold, Parks and Draper) assembled. I have never
seen such scenes at any Universe) and nor had I.
Dave Draper, going on to a triumphant tour of Europe, returned
to the USA to take the IFBB Mr. World Title (I97O). Arnold
became the Pro. Mr. World and in the AAU Mr World, Dave
came 3rd in I97I, again beaten by Schwarzenegger (to remem-
ber how to spell Schwarzenegger, remember one nudger i.e.
n. and two goolies ie. g's) and Sergio Oliva. One of Dave's
best physical features was/is his tough forearms, developed
more by his real love of carving and carpentry than weight
training, never happier than when he was working with his
hands, being self- taught. Carving tough wood into artistically
shaped beautiful Spanish style heavy castle type furniture,
much sought after and in fact two of Dave's best customers
were Arnold and Joe Weider. A family man, his wife Penny
and daughter Jamie, because of his early marriage, sort of
grew up together, overcoming many a trauma

TOUGH TIMES TRIUMPHED.
Always a naturalist at heart
and with a desire for peace,
Dave went through some
tough times. Depressed and
disillusioned once the sea
change came into pro body-
building. Steroid abuse and
lack of the old cameradie he
once knew when at the top.
He lost his enthusiasm and
became almost a recluse, suf-
fering from ill effects of social
drugs and alcohol which in
themselves, contributed to ill
health and depression.
Taking some time out, he tri-
umped over despair and
endowed with a fighting spirit,
and enviable genetics, he
eventually overcame his
chemical abuse, and the expe-
rience left him wiser and healthi-
er. Dave now prefers to coax his muscles with medium
weights and reps, rather than go overly heavy and risk injuries.
He no longer seeks trophies, (having them in abundance) but
rather health, fitness, and the sheer joy of training...... once a
bodybuilder, always a bodybuilder. The desire and delight to
train is stronger than any drug. Dave said on recovery, It is
great to become a part of bodybuilding again. Bodybuilding
once despised, is now universally recognised. Bodybuilders are
people that have to have the qualities of disipline and determi-
nation. Dave went on to run his own body building company,
and became a consultant for a health and fitness equipment
manufacturer. He still continues his labour of love carving out
furniture and training, no longer for glory but for the pure satis-
faction he achieves from exercise.
The late Colin Sheard, summed up Dave by saying, ...he
sensed his claustrophic need to stretch his spirit, to such an
environment as The Redwood Trees. Adding, I hope he

espite being in a small parochial town my local gym has a
surprisingly international clientele.
One guy who trains there is a tall Aussi bloke about 63 but
pretty lean. We always chat about good old Oz and the great
weather there and how shit it is here in UK in comparison.
(Oh to be in Oz now that winter is here!) Anyway one bizarre
conversation was about nappies and Body Building.
Why do the real big body builders wear nappies? he asked
me. I this a joke? I though. Hmmm Well apparently
while training in a rather rough gym in Oz my tall friend noticed
several nappies in the changing room bin apparently full of
blood. Eeekk! thinks I. He said Yeah I noticed the bloody
nappies where there after the biggest guys trained legs.
I just filed this weird conversation under B and forgot about it.
Some months later I was flicking through an old copy of Flex
and saw a grainy black and white photo of Arnie training in one
of those god awful old overhead-leg-press-machines. You
know the ones. Like a Nazi torture device where you lay on
your back directly UNDERNEATH the weight in a kind of chair
come cage and the weight squashed you flat and you try your
best not to be killed by the massive stack of plates above you.
Very motivational when you see that stack descending
towards your head and know you simply HAVE to push it back
up or you dont walk out aliveWhen your knees reach your
ears your very life flashes before your eyes..
Anyway they dont so much train your legs as much as train
your rear sphincter with positively primeval fear and titanic tor-
sional stresses.
The photo made me remember a certain gym I trained at in
Richmond Melbourne. It was very old style hardcore and
was owned by an old style BodyBuilder named George
Treban. In the centre was one of these lethal Sphincter
Busters overhead-leg-press-machines.
Could this be the one and the same gym my tall Aussi friend
here had trained in?
If any exercise would make you wear nappies and squirt blood
out of your arse I would say it was those overhead press mon-
sters. Ban them. They are shear anal torture.
Has this bizarre ranting got a point?
Well yes.
If I had to re-design the human body there are two very
obvious mistakes evolution has lumbered us with that
I would change.
Evolutionary Mistake 1: The Sinuses.
The sinuses are a joke. Why are they there and why do they
fill up with snot so easy? Good old Willie Hague has the dubi-
ous accolade of being the MP with the longest period away
from Whitehall due to illness. Apparently he has bad
sinus congestion. And legend has it that one private health
care draining session removed TWO PINTS of green mucus
from his head. Bizarre. I thought it would implode if that hap-
pened with atmospheric pressure.
Evolutionary mistake number 2:
(is of more interest to us body builders.)
The Rear Sphincter.
Jammed between our two largest muscles (the glutes) is a
small mini doughnut shaped muscle that controls an opening
equally as important as most peoples mouths (as much sense
comes out of both for some people)
During intense training where these the mighty engines of
muscle (glutes) are pumping full power the bodies total mus-
cular performance is focused down onto this small doughnut
which comes under such intense pressure as to make even
Jacques Cousteaus bathysphere look worried.
Bizzare Nazi torture device? or just a dish mop?
OUR MAN CYTOCHROME INVESTIGATES WHY THE REAL BIG BODY
BUILDERS WEAR NAPPIES?
We are only as good as our weakest
link, and for some peoples leg train-
ing its the old barking spider that
gives out first.
Trouble Down Under. Part: The First
Why?
Its no wonder sometimes the little-doughnut-fella gives up.
Though I have never heard of anyone prolapsing during
heavy squats I have known many many people complain
later of bad ring piece problems. (Prolapsing is medical term
for your intestines squirting out of your arse) We are only as
good as our weakest link, and for some peoples leg training
its the old barking spider that gives out first.
What can we do to help it?
Well dont do overhead leg presses for one. When doing 45-
degree presses dont be daft and take your knees back to
your chest. Only take your knees back so far that that your
legs are at a 90% angle at the knee joint or just lightly further
back (but not much further!) Squats where your arse touch-
es the floor with heavy weights isnt so great as well. If you
need to do this to activate your glutes then try pre-fatiguing
them with strict hamstring curls first and then using lower
weights for squats.
Perhaps the only real answer for some peoples long-term
sphincter health is to not get too heavy a body weight.
Sorry thats the crunch. The heavier weight you carry walking
about all day the more stress on your back passage.
Body builders at 400lb?
Yeah. Possible, but try imaging what their rear sphincter mus-
cle will have to be like to withstand such a colossal stress just
from walking upright all day. Such power! They would be able
to bend steel pipes with it hmmmm.. a new trial of strength
perhaps?
New Olympic sport? At the very least it would be a damn use-
ful muscle for removing tightly stuck jam jar lids.
Piles are not funny however..
Reminds me of a racist joke (sorry all you Scots)
Q. Why are piles like the Scottish?
A. Because they are Ok when they come
down and go back up..Its when they
come down and stay down that they are
real a problem!
What to do if you have piles?
See your doctor. Its embarrassing as
hell but necessary.
If they are hanging down like grapes
push them back up and tuck safely
away.
Keep clean and wash regularly to help
stop itching.
Eat a high fibre diet with enough fats and liquids
to fluff the fibre and stop you getting impacted (another
nasty medical term where you get bunged up with hard
unmoving crap and literally need a long handled spoon to
scrape it out of you.)
Dont use any opiates for painkillers like Codeine as it also
clogs you up and makes you constipated. (Its what killed Elvis
incidentally, as he was so bunged up with taking opiates and
low fibre diet the straining while sitting on the lav put pressure
on his heart and killed him stone dead.)
Long term constipation and too much straining can be a pri-
mary cause of piles in the first place. So eat your fibre!
Use soothing creams like Anusol or Preparation-H
(Preparation-H is apparently derived from sharks liver
extract how was it discovered that it helps piles? Did some
suffering fisherman accidentally sit on a sharks liver after gut-
ting one and leap up Eureka! My flamin Emma Freuds feel
great!! )
If piles get too bad they can be removed. Popular techniques
are attaching small tight elastic bands to them so they wither
and fall off (Im serious!) or freezing them so they snap off. (!)
Hopefully they shouldnt get so bad.
If you have any bleeding from your arse see your doctor
straight away as it could be masking other more serious con-
ditions like lower bowl cancer as well. Dont just think a bleed-
ing arse is part and parcel of being a big BBer. It isnt.
No, sitting in a draft will not give you piles. Thats an old wives
tale.
There is always talk about us humans reaching our genetic
limit of size in Body Building.. Androgen receptor number,
liver function, receptor up regulation, muscle fibre type, nitro-
gen retention blah blah blah.. are all talked about back and
forth as a possible limiting factor for ultimate size..
But we now know the REAL limiting factor. The veritable pres-
sure valve that may blow if you get too big. The real Achilles
heel of being MASSIVE that few brave men will even dare to
mention.
Ladies and gentlemen, pray silence please for bodybuildings
most underrated and overworked muscle.
Your arse hole.
At the very least it would be a
damn useful muscle for removing
tightly stuck jam jar lids.
Examinations at the Drs are more fun than they used to be

The Silver Surfer 3
Three guys enter a disabled swimming contest. The first has no
arms, the second no legs and the third has no body, just a head.
They all line up, the whistle blows and "splash" they're all in the
pool.
The guy with no arms takes the lead instantly but the guy with no
legs is closing fast. The head of course sank straight to the bottom.
Ten lengths later and the guy with no legs finishes first. He can still
see bubbles coming from the bottom of the pool, so he decides he
had better dive down to rescue him.
He picks up the head, swims back up to the surface and places
the head at the side of the pool, where upon the head starts
coughing and spluttering.
Eventually the head catches his breath and shouts: "Three years
I've spent learning to swim with my fucking ears, then two minutes
before the whistle, some cunt puts a swimming cap on me!"
A woman goes to a dressmaker to order a wedding
dress. She says it's her 4th husband and she
wants something special in white.
The dressmaker is puzzled and asks her if she is
sure she wants a white dress?
"Of course, I'm still a virgin", replies the woman.
"You see, my first husband was a philosopher and
all he wanted to do was talk about it. My second
was a gynocologist and he just wanted to look at it.
My third was a stamp collector..... Oh I did love
him!"
A blonde went into a world wide message centre to send a
message to her mother overseas. When the man told her it
would cost $300, she exclaimed: "But I don't have any
money. I'd do ANYTHING to get a message to my mother"
The man arched an eyebrow (as we would expect) "Anything?"
he asked.
"Yes, yes, anything" the blonde promised. 'Well then, just follow
me" said the man as he walked towards the next room.
The blonde did as she was told and followed the man. "Come
in and close the door" the man said. She did. He then said
"Now get on your knees". She did.
"Now take down my zipper". She did.
"Now go ahead ... take it out ...." he said. She reached in and
grabbed it with both hands ... then paused.
The man closed his eyes and whispered "Well... go ahead".
The blonde slowly brought her mouth closer to it ..and while
holding it close to her lips, tentatively said...........
"Hello, Mum can you hear me?"

To most of you out there, your first thought will be,
how do my feet affect my bodybuilding capalility?
Did you know that misalignment of the feet e.g
pronation (dropped arches) or supination(over high
arches) can cause problems such as shin splint,
heal pain, calf pain, hip pain, lower back pain,
groin pain, even neck pain.
You see, the feet are our foundations, much like
the foundations of a house, when they are out of
alignment, the whole lot goes!! Basically, the prob-
lem comes about by a faulty relationship between
the bones and muscles of the foot.
The way to put your feet in order and correct the
function of the body, is by devices worn in the
shoes called orthotics.
Now many of you will have seen these advertised
in shops, chemists or the Sunday papers. This is
not the way to go. Your feet are so individual that
to do this is like buying glasses just because they
fit your ears! Orthotics must be fitted by a qualified
practitioner, which involves taking a mould of your
feet and assessing them as individual. They are
expensive, but the right orthotics will last for life.
How Do They Work?
As your foot sits comfortably on the orthotics, it is
gently and consistently directed to the optimum
posistion, allowing the foot to function correctly
when running, walking, standing or even lifting
weights. Heres an example of how they directly
affect bodybuilders.
FOOT
The Feet and how they can affect all of you
- from head to toe!
The picture left is placed thus for medical
reasons only! (yeah right). Just look at
the state of those shoes? What IS the
world coming to? The poor girls feet, wish
they were on my shoulders! Yknow, a
foot massage would do the trick.
Yeah right!

Case 1
A bodybuilder came to me with a lower back pain, which I duly fixed
with my osteopathic skills. However, 2 weeks later the pain had
returned. I looked closer for a functional cause and I found severe
foot pronation. He said he had found running difficult so stayed of the
running machine for his C.V. Running made his back worse and his
calves hurt, I prescribed orthotics, because as well as his other pains,
his calves were smaller than Mick Harts spelling capacity. (Eds
Note: Ow ye, fcuk u two!)
Six months after the orthotics were fitted, the calves have sprung out
like Dorians, the back pain has gone, and now he worships orthotics
as a religion! You see, his calves had been constantley overworking
to hold his feet where they should have been, and as we all know,
overwork a muscle and it wont grow!!
Being prescribed, orthotics can be the best investment you can make
in your overall musculoskeletal well-being.
Where do I get them prescribed?
Be careful, some can be very expensive and only last 2 years. The
lab we use make them to last for life.
If you live near Surrey or London we prescribe them at our clinic
phone me Les Bailey on 0208 669 3818, or for your nearest pre-
scriber, phone orthotic express laboratory on 01604

Misalignment can
result in a number
of problems com-
monly flat feet, over
pronation, persis-
tant ankle sprains,
bunions, corns, cal-
luses... even symp-
toms that would not
normally associate
with feet such as
stress and pain in
the back, neck, hips
and knees!
Eds FOOT NOTE:
This poor girl has a few problems with
her feet - she cannot fucking see em!
But it is nice to see that she is getting
on fine with her chirope, chiropa, chire,
er foot doctor! Trouble is, the relation-
ship is SO good, he cannot seem to get
her out of his head - LITERALLY!
Its nice when people get on - even
nicer when they get off!

T
his somewhat paradoxically named feat
is something that you often hear about
but seldom see. The One Armed Chinner
himself, is a very rare species indeed.
Power lifters have deadlifted, squatted and
bench pressed unbelievable loads of iron and
nowadays the 500lb bench press is becoming
commonplace. Yet, for all this there are few
feats of strength more impressive, particularly
to the man in the street, than the one hand
chin. Perhaps this is because every boy has, at
one time or another tried to do a few pull-ups.
Everyone knows just how difficult handling your
own bodyweight can be, even with two hands.
Chinning the bar is something to which most
people can relate.
Think about it. How many guys do you know
who can pull themselves up to a horizontal bar,
from the 'hang' position, using just one hand?
Not a lot! And how many have you actually wit-
nessed doing it?
Me? Well, I must be lucky because I actually
saw two men perform the feat on the same
day. It was a long time ago, in the 'sixties and
both were members of my Regent Square Gym
in London. One was an Italian male model.
The other, an Israeli, was an ex paratrooper.
The ex-para was not too tall, but lean and well
muscled and weighed about 150 lbs. The ideal
build for a chinner. Bodyweight and muscular
bulk are not an advantage.
The Italian, by contrast was about 6' 1" and
while not bulky, by present day standards, he
had a fine overall development and weighed a
good 190lbs. One day, in the gym, a group of
us were discussing the one arm chin.
"I-a can-a do it!", said Mario, the Italian. We
were all a bit surprised and we were wondering
if he really could. We knew that he was some-
thing of a boaster. Then, before anyone could
challenge him to prove his claim, Avvy, the
Israeli, gave a little shrug and said that he
could do it too!
T
here was only one way to find out if these
claims were true, so we moved as a
group to the chinning bar. Incidentally,
Doug Strohl, Nabba Universe place winner and
owner of 'The Broadest Back in Hollywood',
was in the gym that day. He said that though
he knew one or two of the Muscle Beach crowd
that said they could do a one arm chin, he'd
never actually seen one performed. He also
pointed out that bodyweight exercises, such as
push-ups dips and chinning, all favour the
smaller or lighter man. He doesn't have to
move as much weight with each rep. Someone
said that, 'Big Doug would say that, wouldn't

he?' Somebody else (a university lecturer)
chipped in that it was really a question of
power to weight ratio.
Mario, the Italian, went first. Acting a judge, I
insisted that he start at the full hang with arm
fully extended. Before our watchful eyes he
heaved himself up to the bar, paused with a
satisfied grin and then descended.
A
vvy had to jump to grasp the bar and
then,
from
the hang,
he pumped
out, not
one, but
two reps!
Back on
the floor
again he
made the
apologetic
admission
that he
could do only one rep with his left, but
we didn't insist on a demo.
However, a couple of days later I got
the two of them to co-operate in a little
experiment. I had read somewhere
that, you couldn't do a one arm chin
until you could do 33 (thirty-three) reps
in the standard two hands version. We
set out to check this and sure enough
both men exceeded the magic 33. (I
can't think where I read that)
It has to be acknowledged that not
everyone can make it into the one arm
club. Some people have more going for them,
in this direction, than others. Much depends, as
we've already said, on your natural make-up
and bodyweight. However, if you think that it is
a goal within your reach, why not go for it?
A
ssuming that you have decided that you
want to be a one arm bandit, how do you
go about it? Well, one idea that
emerges from the above, is to build up your
reps on the two hand version. Most people do
their chins in sets of anything up to ten and
that's a far cry from 33. Like the road to
Carnegie Hall it's a case of "Practice man,
practice."
Chinning with added weights will help you to
build up the numbers in the free chin. Also you
must practise single arm chinning.
What's that you say? Yes, I know you can't do
a single arm chin, so how can you practise
them? Well, this is where you've got to help
nature a bit. Enter The Assisted One Hand
Chin, described below.
T
ake a 'curl grip' (palm facing inwards)
with say, your right hand. Now with your
left hand you grip your right wrist. Now
you chin the bar with left arm helping the
right. This is the Assisted One Arm Chin and
you should be able to make a respectable set.
The exercise can be made more difficult and
closer to the true One Arm Chin, by gradually
moving your left hand grip lower and lower
down the right arm. When you get to the point
where the help-
ing hand reach-
es the right del-
toid (which
won't happen
overnight) you'll
really be within
striking distance
of that elusive
One Arm Chin.
I have
assumed, for
the purpose of
clarity, that you
are right hand-
ed but in any
case you
should work both sides equally if you don't
want to develop a nasty list to starboard.
So there you have it. If you want to crack the
one arm barrier, put yourself on a regime of
free chins, chins with weight and assisted sin-
gle arm chins. You'll reap great dividends in
upper back and arm development and you
could be the first on the block to do the one
arm chin and surprise the neighbours
Nice project for 2001.
