and later became the first emperor of
Northern and Western Europe since the
emperors of the Western Roman
Empire.

D-Day started on June sixth of that year. It was the first day of Operation Overlord. Allied land forces
from the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada saw combat in Normandy on D-Day itself.
Free French Forces and Poland also participated in the battle after the assault phase as were minor
contingents from Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands, and Norway. This operation started the
liberation of France and a major part of the Netherlands in the same year.
