ENGR 214: Engineering Mechanics II (Dynamics)

Final Exam, 26 May, 2010

1. (25) A boy throws a ball upward with a speed v
0
= 12 m/s.
The wind imparts a horizontal acceleration of 0.4 m/s
2
to the
left. At what angle u must the ball be thrown such that it
returns to the point of release? Assume that the wind does not
affect the vertical motion.
Ans. 2.33 degrees

2. (25) Two spheres are hanging from two cords as shown.
The distance from the ceiling to the center of each sphere is
2m, and the coefficient of restitution is 0.75. If sphere A
(m
A
=2 kg) is drawn back 60 and released from rest,
determine:
(a) the maximum angle u
B
that sphere B (m
B
=3 kg) will
swing as a result of the impact
(b) the angle u
A
that sphere A will rebound
Ans. 40.99 degrees, 2.85 degrees

3. (25) A car mechanic walks two wheel/tire units across a
horizontal floor as shown. He walks with constant speed v and
keeps the tires in the configuration shown with the same position
relative to his body. If there is no slipping at any interface,
determine (a) the angular velocity of the lower tire, (b) the
angular velocity of the upper tire, and (c) the velocities of points
A, B, C and D. The radius of both tires is r.
Ans. v/r cw (lower tire), v/r ccw (upper tire), v, 2v, v, 0

4. (25) The truck carries the crate which has a center of gravity
at G. Determine the largest acceleration of the truck so that the
crate will not slip or tip on the truck bed. The coefficient of
friction between the crate and the truck is = 0.6.
Ans. 4.905 m/s
