The American
Delirium Society
Mission: The goals of the American Delirium Society
are to foster research, education, quality improvement,
advocacy and implementation science to minimize the
impact of delirium on short- and long-term health and
well being of patients and decrease the effects of delirium
on the health care system as a whole.
Objectives:
After attending this activity, the participant will demon-
strate the ability to:

(1) Employ one new method of delirium detection.
(2) Outline current advances in the treatment of delirium.
(3) Name one new approach to prevent delirium.

Tools you can use today!
More than half of nursing facility residents have some form
of dementia, many of whom experience behavioral and
psychological symptoms. These behaviors can pose signifi-
cant challenges for the staff and residents. Over 25% of
patients in nursing facilities in the United States receive
antipsychotic medications, and while these drugs have many
legitimate uses, they are often used inappropriately in nurs-
ing facilities to treat behavioral disorders associated with
dementia.
