Tabl e 1 Courses avai l abl e
COURSES AVAILABLE IN 2013
There are more than 1,500 courses available in 2013, mostly in
Commonwealth-supported places (CSP). CSP courses used to be called
HECS courses and are available to domestic students only. (Domestic
students are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of
Australian permanent-resident visas, including Australian permanent
humanitarian visas.)
CUT-OFFS
Table 1 shows the minimum cut-off required for Australian Year 12 applicants
for selection into each CSP course in 2012.
There are some cases where a cut-off is not given and instead there is an
abbreviation. For example, N/A appears where selection criteria other
than the ATAR are used for selection, or the course is not available to Year
12 applicants; A+C appears where a combination of ATAR and additional
selection criteria is used for selection. You will nd a key to the abbreviations
at the bottom of each page.
As a general rule, the cut-offs indicate the lowest ATAR accepted for entry into
the course in the Main Round in 2012. The cut-offs include bonus points, so
that some Year 12 applicants will have received an offer to that course even
though their ATAR was below the cut-off (see below).
The cut-offs do not represent the average ability of the students accepted
for the course.
Cut-offs are determined by the interaction of three factors:
1 the number of places available in the course
2 the number of applicants listing the course as a preference and
3 the quality of those applicants.
Due to these factors, cut-offs vary from year to year and are impossible to
predict before applicants are selected for a particular course in a particular
year. The cut-offs for any course may rise, fall or remain the same from year to
year. The cut-offs shown in this table provide only an indication of the possible
cut-offs for entry in 2013. They are a general guide to help you assess your
chances of getting a place in a particular course. Cut-offs for 2013 will not be
known until selections are made during the offer rounds.
ORDER OF COURSES
Courses are listed in alphabetical order except for the University of New South
Wales, the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney who
list in CSP course-code order.
KEY TO SYMBOLS
There is a key to the abbreviations and symbols used in table 1 at the bottom
of each page. Following is a detailed description of the symbols.

Graduate or prior study status

Applicants for courses specifying graduate or prior study status need to have
completed certain postsecondary/tertiary study to be considered for entry to
the course. The required study is specied in the course description in Part 2.
Some examples include a Bachelor degree or a TAFE Diploma.
If you have not completed the required study you will not be considered for
the course.

Course prerequisites
Some courses require you to have achieved a specied standard in a NSW
HSC course or equivalent before you can be offered a place in the course.
If you do not have the required course prerequisite/s, you cannot be selected
for the course even though you may have met the admission requirements.
Not all institutions have course prerequisites. Of those that do, some are
very specic and state a required level you must have achieved in your HSC
course. For example, if an institution states Mathematics (Band 3) this means
that you must achieve a result in Band 3 or higher in Mathematics to meet
the course prerequisite. If you achieve less than Band 3 you do not meet the
course prerequisite and, even if you have the ATAR for entry to the course, you
will not receive an offer.
Other institutions do not specify bands, instead they just specify the HSC
course name. This means that you must attempt the course, but you do not
have to achieve a specic result.

Subject prerequisites
Some subjects in a tertiary course require you to have achieved a specied
standard (or equivalent) in a NSW HSC course before you are able to enrol
in those particular subjects.
If you do not have the required subject prerequisite/s, but you have met the
admission requirements, you may be selected for the course, but may be
unable to take the particular subject within the course.
Some institutions require you to have achieved a specic level in your HSC
course. For example, if an institution states Mathematics (Band 3), this
means that you must achieve a result in Band 3 or higher in Mathematics
to meet the subject prerequisite. Other institutions do not specify bands,
instead they just specify the HSC course name. This means that you must
attempt the course, but you do not have to achieve a specic result.
Some institutions offer bridging or introductory courses which provide those
people who do not meet subject prerequisites with an opportunity to achieve
the required standard call the relevant institution for details.

Assumed knowledge
Some institutions assume you have a knowledge of specic NSW HSC courses
or equivalent prior to beginning your course. If you do not have the assumed
level of knowledge but have met the admission requirements, you can still be
selected for the course. You may have, however, some difculty coping with
your studies.
Some institutions offer bridging or introductory courses; these enable those
people who do not have the required level of assumed knowledge to achieve
the required HSC standard. For details, contact the relevant institution.

Additional selection criteria

These are compulsory requirements, either in addition to, or instead of,
admission requirements, which you must satisfy to be considered for selection
into the course. They include interviews, auditions, portfolios, supporting
statements, questionnaires and tests.
Courses with additional selection criteria usually have early closing dates
check the course descriptions for details.

Recommended studies
These are NSW HSC or equivalent courses that institutions suggest
will assist you in your chosen tertiary course. If you have not studied these
courses your chances of selection are not affected. This symbol is not used in
table 1. It is used only in the course descriptions in Part 2.
Offers to applicants who have an ATAR below
the published cut-off
The cut-off for a course is a general indication of the minimum ATAR
required for selection into the course for the majority of current
Australian Year 12 applicants. However, for some applicants institutions
award bonus points (see below), or have alternative pathways for
admission, which may allow applicants to receive an offer to a course
even though they have an ATAR below the cut-off. The schemes and
pathways offered by the institutions differ. Read section 3 and check
each institutions entry in Part 2 for more information about the
schemes and pathways offered.
Bonus points and cut-offs
Institutions allocate bonus points to some Year 12 applicants for
different circumstances. For example, you may be given bonus points for
performance in specied HSC subjects, or for living in or attending school
in an area dened by the institution, or through the assessment
of your Educational Access Schemes (EAS) application.
When you are allocated bonus points, your ATAR does not change.
What does change is your selection rank for a particular course
preference. For most Year 12 applicants their selection rank is their
ATAR (or equivalent). However, if you are allocated bonus points for a
particular preference, your selection rank for that preference = your
ATAR + bonus points.
This means that students with bonus points can receive an offer to a
course even though their ATAR is below the cut-off.
As the bonus points schemes for each institution, and often for each
course at the same institution, are different, then your selection rank
can be different for each course you list in your course preferences.
The cut-offs in table 1 include any bonus points allocated, so they
represent the lowest selection rank required for entry into a particular
course. See question 13 in section 8.6 for an example.
