Lesson Plan
A Trip to the Ancestral Homeland: Scratch Trivia Game
Overview
After discovering where their ancestors and cultural traditions have come from,
students in my grade nine social studies class will use resource books and the internet
to research a country from their heritage. After all of their research is complete,
students will use the web site called Scratch to create a trivia game. This game will be
used to test their classmates on each students country or heritage origins.
Objective
Students will:
1. Gain geographical and cultural knowledge of a country of the world.
2. Skim reference books and internet articles to find important information about
their country.
3. Be able to visually create a trivia game that not only tests their fellow students
knowledge of various countries but informs their fellow students of their
cultural heritage.
4. Programming skills in the MIT Scratch programming web site
5. Empathy towards diversity
6. Develop research and organization skills
7. Develop cultural awareness
8. Learn in a gamified environment

Materials
1. A computer with internet access
2. Access to the MIT Scratch program
3. Research Guide for each student located below
4. Access to the school library
5. A computer that is connected to a projector in order to demonstrate the Scratch
programming to the class.

Set Up and Prepare
1. Before you begin request that students select a country from their heritage that
they would like to study, write it down.

2. Print and make enough copies of the research organizer (see below), or make
available electronically.

3. Visit the school library and gather a large collection of expository material that
the class can use to research countries of the world.

4. Preview internet sites you may want students to use for research bookmark a
limited number of appropriate sites you want the class to use when doing
research.

5. Provide an example of a heritage or country trivia game Trivia Game Example

6. Provide an opportunity to teach the basics to the Scratch program needed for
this trivia game activity.

Directions
Part One: Researching the Country
Day 1
Step 1: Tell students they will have the opportunity to learn more about one
country that plays a role in their family background. Discuss what criteria they
should think of when choosing a country.

Questions to bring up include:
1. Is this a country that influences some of their family traditions?
2. Will they be able to find up to date resources on this country?
3. Is this a country currently in existence?
4. Are any other people studying this country in the class?
5. Weigh the pros and cons of choosing a "popular" country. The
advantage would be having a partner or small group to work with; a
disadvantage would be making your project trivia game unique.

Step 2: Allow students to spend some time looking through resources on
countries in order to help them narrow in on their research topic. This may be
done in your classroom or your school's media center. Make sure that by this
point students have asked their parents what their ancestral heritage is as this
will be the country their child plans to study.

Days 2-4
Step 1: When all students have picked a country, distribute copies, for each
student of the research organizer see below. Review your expectations. For
each section, discuss and help students decide the best resource to use for each
area. Model for students how they can skim books, articles, and on line
reference information to look for important facts to help students complete the
research guide.

Step 2: Provide two class periods (about 80 min) for your students to research
and fill out their organizer. At least one of those class periods should be spent
using the computer for research. Have students visit the sites you have
bookmarked, have students share good resources with others. Monitor students
work to ensure they stay focused and on track with their research.

Part Two: Scratch Program
Days 5-7:
Step 1: After they've completed the research, tell students that they will
transfer this information into a fun and interesting trivia game. Explain how
they will take the information they've learned to write create/questions for the
users of the game. Again review an example of a trivia game. Trivia Game
Example .

Using the example will provide for an example for the game mechanics, as the
mechanics, or programming will be very similar. The Scratch program makes
it easy to copy the programming that the students will need to follow to create a
basic trivia, right and wrong answer option. The students can make their trivia
game unique with different images, music and other aspects that build upon the
basic game design the trivia example provides.

Step 2: Work as a whole group to begin the first page of the Scratch game.
Use a projector connected to a computer so as to demonstrate the basics to the
Scratch programming site. Demonstrate the first basic template for a trivia
game. The students will then use the template for the first page of their own
project and will continue creating pages for their Scratch trivia game.
Modeling this process as well as showing students how to use the information
from their completed Research Organizer to use as the basis for the information

they will need for the trivia questions. Allow students approximately two class
periods (about 80 min) to complete Scratch trivia game.

Step 3: Once students have finished their Scratch trivia game, and they're ready
to share it. Demonstrate how to share the Scratch game.

Step 4: Allow time (about 30 min) for students to play several other students
trivia games.

Supporting All Learners
The process of completing the Scratch game may be quite challenging for some
students in class. Make sure students have access to the sample trivia game in order to
copy the code for their game.
Home Connection
If your school population is diverse, you have a valuable resource at your fingertips.
Have parents from different countries come in to help students research. They may be
able to give first-hand accounts of the culture in a country or provide language
translations for students. Parents can also be very helpful when you are using the
Internet or completing the research guide. I always feel it is important to have as many
mature eyes and ears as possible when students are using the Internet so the students
stay focused.
Assignments
1. Take notes in the research organizer note (see below) while doing research.
2. Use notes to prepare your Scratch trivia game
3. Program scratch trivia game based upon the example provided Trivia Game
Example

Evaluation
1. Did your students have enough information about their country to fill
out the research organizer adequately?
2. Did the students have enough time to research their country?
3. Were students able to create their Scratch Trivia game?
4. What would you do differently next time to improve this lesson?
5 EdTech 597 Gamification Final Project T. Dumais

5. Tools (i.e. internet, access to library, etc)/equipment (i.e. projector)
for doing research and gather enough info.
6. Difficulties? Level (i.e. easy or hard)?

Assess Students
Teacher Observation: Were the students using the research time effectively? Did
students working on the same countries work well together? Were students able to
make the Scratch game independently? Did the students understand the geographical
terms used in the research organizer? Were the students finding this activity
interesting/boring/educating?
Written Outcome: Were students able to transfer information from the notes they took
to the scratch game? Did they understand what information was needed and what
information to gather? Did they edit and change programing appropriately when
needed? Did the students give suggestions/comments on how to improve the scratch
game?
