The growth of the Internet and

mobile computers is increasing

the requirements for mobile data
transmission. GPRS, as a mandato-
ry service of GSM phase 2+, offers
the operator the opportunity to
push mobile data into the mass
market and thereby extend their
traditional business into new
revenue sources.
General Packet Radio Service
GPRS
Our vision is to provide mobile
access to all kinds of informa-
tion. Wherever you are.
To anywhere in the world.
Functional Description
GPRS is a universal packet-switched
data service in GSM based on IP. It
provides higher mobile user data rates
by utilizing existing bandwidth more
efficiently. Three new network entities
are necessary:
I Gateway GPRS Support Node
(GGSN)
I Serving GPRS Support Node
(SGSN)
I Packet Control Unit (PCU)
an extension of the BSS
The Siemens solution offers the
following improvements:
I New SGSN and GGSN nodes
based on a new powerful platform
I PCU integrated into the BSC
I BTS extension via software
download
I HLR extension by GPRS specific
subscriber data

The hardware of SGSN and GGSN is
based on the same new hardware
used in other high-end products of
Siemens communication technology.
Highlights are:
I Main Processor (MP) for the
operation system and application
software. One MP consists of
two identical Main Processor
Units (MPU) working in micro-
synchronous mode for hot
redundancy
I Memory per MPU scalable
from 128 up to 512 MB SDRAM
I Line Interface Circuits (LIC) to
provide connectivity of external
line interfaces to the ATM
Switching Network (ASN)
I ATM Switching Network (ASN)
for the interconnection of
MPs and LICs
I High scalability due to the flexible
combination of MPs and/or LICs

Operator Benefits
I New business opportunities in a
market with tremendous growth
potential
I Better ratio of cost to bandwidth
I Efficient use of radio resources
I Direct access to packet data net-
works (e.g. Internet)
I Optimized transfer media for fre-
quent point-to-point transmission
of small volumes of data and for
point-to-multipoint transmission in
a specific geographical area
I Reliability
I Scalability
I Integrated services, operation and
management
I Future-proof technology
I Priniciples of GPRS as the basis of
future networks
I Colocated system minimizes
operational effort
I SMS over GPRS leads to
an increase in efficiency
in the air interface
I Siemens GPRS hardware can be
reused in UMTS networks
I Ability to offer the successful
prepaid solution to GPRS
subscribers too
Applications
As a packet-oriented service, GPRS
targets applications requiring bulky
and bursty data transfer for point-to-
point and point-to-multipoint services.
Therefore, it is well suited for a wide
range of applications, e.g.:
I Mobile Office
I Field sales/service
I Group call based services (e.g.
stock information)
I Wireless access to databases
I Mobile Internet access (e.g. WAP)
I Electronic commerce
- point of sale
- electronic banking
- electronic cash
- electronic payment
I Messaging
I Fleet management
I Road guide systems
I Security/supervisory systems
I Telemetry
I Reservation systems (e.g. hotel,
theater, flights)
I Highway charging systems
I Location based infoservices
User Benefits
I Cost reduction due to volume-
dependent charging. The user
only pays for the amount of data
transfered, not for the duration
of the connnection
I Higher user data rates
I Faster Internet access
I New applications enabling real
plug and play
I PrePaid services also possible
for data
