There was a king, who did not have any son, towhomhe could handover his king
dom. So he decided toselect someone fromhis people. He announced, Tomorrow, after
sunrise whosoever meets me first, I will make him king. The announcement was spread
across the kingdom.
Next day, right from early morning there was a long queue in front of gate of palace. After
sunrise entry was given. There was a security guard who told, Listen! The king is in forth suite.
First three suites are for you to enjoy. Get satisfied yourself before you meet the king. But
remember one thing; at sunset everyone will be driven out. First suite was full of fancy and
colorful clothes. One could select as many clothes as one wanted to take with him, free of cost!
People started going fromhere to there in the suite to select the clothes. Second suite was full
of precious and beautiful jewelry. One could select as many ornaments as one wanted, again
free of cost. Many people immediately got busy in selection process. Third suite was full of
eatables. Delicious dishes were available, again free of cost, one could eat as much as one
wanted to satisfy his tongue. Some people had watery mouths and immediately started eating.
It was like lifetime opportunity. Everyone thought that first let me get satisfied, before I meet the
king. But satisfaction never came. There was only one person, out of the whole lot, who just
glanced at the first three suites, he had only one thought in his mind, I have come here to meet
the king, I should be the first person to meet the king. He met the king and got the kingdom.
The rest were driven out at sunset.
Moral: When you set out to achieve the goal, do not get diverted, do not stop at small
achievements, keepyour visionfixedonyour goal, youwill certainly achieve it.

Answer
Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) and Active Front End Converter (AFC) both can be
usedinharmonicmitigation, whichistobeusedwhere?
AHF is connected in shunt with any type of non-linear load such as Variable Frequency
Drive, Rectifier, DC drive, Induction furnace and so on. Whatever harmonic current is
generated by any one or many or all of these loads, that is absorbed by AHF as per its
harmonic current compensation capacity and the source is protected from injection of
harmonics. InadditionAHFcan also be used for power factor improvement.
Where as, AFCis used in place of ordinary diode rectifier, which is at the input of Variable
Frequency Drive (VFD) or UPS. Unlike ordinary 6-pulse diode bridge which results in
about 60%THD(total harmonic distortion) of input current, AFCdraws sinusoidal current
from source with less than 5% current distortion. Moreover it improves the input power
factor almost to unity and it can also feed back the power generated by regenerative
loads like centrifuge back to the source. Hence it can be used for common DC link
supplying many VFDs, or for supplying the higher power rating VFD used for
regenerative loads, where sizable energy conservation is possible by power feedback to
mains.
