INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION:
A mock-up is only supposed to look like the real
thing, but it doesn't have to work at all. Used for
trade shows, marketing ("this is what it will look like")
and ergonomic studies ("is it comfortable in your
hand?")
A prototype has to look and work like the real
thing. It actuallyis the real thing, but it's the first unit
and you know you'll probably have to change a few
things before you start manufacturing it. It is used for
testing and real demonstration purposes ("see, it
reallyworks!", "howfast canit reallygo?")
INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION:
In manufacturing and design, a mockup,
or mock-up, is a scale or full-size model of a
design or device, used for teaching,
demonstration, design evaluation, promotion, and
other purposes.
A mockup is a prototype if it provides at least part
of the functionality of a system and enables
testingof a design.
WHY MOCKUP?
Mock-ups are used by designers mainly to acquire
feedback fromusers.
You can fix it now on the drafting board with an
eraser or you can fix it later on the construction site
with a sledge hammer.
To evaluate the balance of product shape, structure,
material suitability, safety, and the manufacturing
method.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Digital MockUp or DMU is a concept that allows the description of a
product, usually in 3D, for its entire life cycle. Digital Mockup is
enriched by all the activities that contribute to describing the product.
The product design engineers, the manufacturing engineers, and
the support engineers work together to create and manage
the DMU. One of the objectives is to have an important knowledge of
the future or the supported product to replace any
physical prototypes with virtual ones, using 3D computer
graphics techniques.
As an extension it is also frequently referred to as Digital
Prototyping or Virtual Prototyping. These two specific definitions refer
to the production of a physical prototype, but they are part of the DMU
concept. DMU allows engineers to design and configure complex
products and validate their designs without ever needing to build a
physical model.

AutomotiveStyling CLAY MODELING
Before a new car model is launched, a long period of creating the
right design takes place. Even today, computer model are not
sufficient to evaluate a design. Therefore 1:4 or even 1:1 models are
built to get an impression of the final car.
Although the arrival of the computer aided design programme CAD
at the end of 20th century has sped up the initial design steps,
studios still very much rely on having an original-sized 3D model
made out of modelling clay.
How?
These models are created in clay, and usually consist of a
wooden or iron frame which is covered with STYROFOAM.
Clay is smoothed over the foam. Modellers then use various
tools and slicks to finalize the shape of the car, since changes
are readilypossible.
