International Literacy Day was held on 8 September 2013. September 8 was
proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first
celebrated in 1966. The day was celebrated to highlight the importance of literacy to
individuals, communities and societies.

Union government of India is set to launch ISROs ambitious Mars Orbiter Mission in
November 2013.
Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Tokyo will host the
2020 summer Olympics after beating Istanbul in a head-to-head voting by the
International Olympic Committee. This will be the second time the city will be hosting
the Olympics. Next Olympics 2016 is going to be held at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
The Lok Sabha passed the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment
Bill, 2013.

Siddiqa Parveen - An Indian woman from south Dinajpur in West Bengal was declared
the world's tallest woman by Guinness Book of World Records. Her height is at least 7
ft 8 inch. Because of ill health and Parveens inability to stand upright, it is impossible to
ascertain her exact stature. The record for the shortest living woman already belongs to
an Indian Jyoti Amge, who is just 62.8 cm tall).

Ray Dolby - The Engineer who pioneered the noise reduction in audio recordings died.
He was the founder of Dolby Laboratories. Ray Dolby gave cinema viewing a
completely new experience with invention of some of the most pioneering works in high-
end sound reproduction and noise reduction. He held more than 50 US patents, and has
written papers on videotape recording, long-wavelength X-ray analysis, and noise
reduction.
The National Food Security Bill, 2013 received the assent of the President of India,
Pranab Mukherjee.

Malala Yousafzai and Harry Belafonte received Amnesty International's
Ambassador of Conscience Award for 2013 in Dublin, Ireland.

called to stage flag marches and thousands of anti-riot police personnel were deployed to
restore law and order in the district.
Conservative Party came to power in Norway after defeating Prime Minister Jens
Stoltenbergs Labour Party in the recently held national elections. (Conservative Party led
by Erna Solberg ended Prime Minister Jens Stoltenbergs eight years in office at the helm
of a red-green coalition. The conservatives last led a government in 1990)
Faisalabad Wolves - Pakistans domestic T-20 champion team, which has been issued
visasby the Indian Govt. to tour India to participate in the qualifying round of the
Champions League Twenty-20 (CLT-20) to begin later this month.

Voyager 1 has become the first human-made object to venture into interstellar space
as disclosed by NASA. (Voyager 1 was launched in 1977 and it has covered a distance of
about 19 billion kilometers from the Sun. Voyager 1 is presently travelling in a
transitional region immediately outside the solar bubble, where some effects from our sun
are still evident)

Amit Kumar and Bajrang Kumar - Two Indian wrestlers won medals at the World
Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary. (Amit Kumar won a silver medal in the
55 Kg freestyle category, after losing to Iranian Hassan Farman Rahimi in the finals.
Bajrang Kumar won a bronze medal in 60 kilogram freestyle category after defeating
Mongolias Nyam-Ochir Enkhsaikhan in the bronze medal match. This was the first time
India has won two medals in the Mens events at the World Championship level)
Yogendra Yadav -famous psephologist was removed from the post of member of the
University Grants Commission (UGC) on 18 September, 2013 for joining a political
party. (Yadav has been associated with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He was served a
show-cause notice on September 4 by the Human Resource Development Ministry and he
had sent in his explanation)
Mohammedan Sporting won the Durand Cup Football tournament 2013 after
defeating ONGC in the finals. (Mohammedan Sporting of Kolkota won this prestigious
tournament after a huge gap of 73 years. It last won this tournament in 1940.
Mohammedan Sporting had last entered the final of Durand Cup in 1992)
Bank of China launched Chinas first direct bank. Direct bank stands for a bank which
provides direct banking services without having conventional bank branches. (Direct
banks mainly provide banking through online and telephone modes. These banks
generally provide ATM services through alliances of interbank networks)
Sandeep Tulsi Yadav - Yadav won Indias first ever medal in Greco Roman category at
the World Wrestling Championships when he won the bronze medal by beating Serbian
Makismovic Aleksandar at the concluding day of World Wrestling Championships at
Budapest, Hungary. Sandeep Tulsi Yadav. Indian wrestlers have been traditionally strong

in freestyle category but they have not been very successful in Greco-Roman category of
wrestling.
A new James Bond novel titled Solo was released in London. William Boyd has
written this novel. (In this latest adventure, James Bond is taken to war-torn Africa back
in the 1960s).
