Lights up. Dark rainy night in upstate New York JACK and Wife JESSICA has just began to prepare for
bed when the phone rings.

JACK
Who is this you must have the wrong number thats impossible I just talked him yesterday, listen
lady its too late to be playing on the phone

JESSICA
What is it, honey?

JACK
Yes, I understand ma'am, but this is possible,

(falling to his knees, he began to weep)

I cant I have a new job, family, I can't leave now.

(Jessica now kneeling consoles her husband as he throws the phone)

JACK (cont.)
Papa Jin has died of a massive heart attack and his attorney wants me on the first flight out to Japan
to take over is estate.

JESSICA
Are you serious, but how can they expect you to drop everything and go over there? We love Papa
Jin but you just started your job and Jonathan is only 3 weeks old.

JACK
I know honey just please understand hierarchy plays a big role in my culture, it is my duty to take
over the estate. I will send for you and Jonathan...

(JACK begins to pack a travel bag)


JESSICA
You are not leaving!

(Snatching JACKs bag)

Damn the familys business! Your brother can handle that. We have too much invested here with
our own family.

Characters are in a hotel room. Stormy sky outside. News channel playing on TV in background. Kids
laughing and joking with each other.

TV
The storm is approaching faster than expected. Everyone is advised to take shelter immediately.

SAMANTHA
Kids, Rob?! We need to get out of this hotel now! There is a storm shelter a few blocks away that
everyone is taking shelter in. The storm is almost here, we need to move!

(motions to ROB to get the kids together)

ROB
Kids, grab your bags, lets go. Samantha, where are your parents?

SAMANTHA
They went out this morning to tour the town and I havent seen them since!

ROB
Sam, theres no time to find them. We need to get to the shelter now, all of us. Im sure they are
already there anyways.

SAMANTHA
How can you be sure? I need to find them, Rob. Theyre my parents.

ROB
I know that I cant stop you, but I am going to take the kids to the shelter.

SAMANTHA
I will meet you there; I cant be sure that theyre already at the shelter.

(ROB and the kids all exit the room in a hurry)

(SAMANTHA calls her parents cell phones frantically, no answer. she paces around the room while
looking out the window.)
(The hotel room suddenly opens and SAMANTHAs dad comes running in)

SAMANTHA
Dad! Where have you been?

SAMANTHAS DAD
Sam! Get your bag, lets go now!

SAMANTHA
Wheres mom?

SAMANTHAS DAD
She is already at the shelter. I told her to go and I would come to find you. Now lets get to the
shelter before its too late!

(They both start running down the hallway and go on their way to the shelter)

JACK
Hello? Is there anybody in here?

(He walks through the building, try to find if someone else still stuck in the building like him.)

JACK
Hello? Hello?

(JACK ties another time, but it seems like there is nobody in there. Around him was cover in water. He
tries to find the stairs to get higher because the water is rising.)

(Finally he found the stair, and he walk up to another floor)

JACK
Hi, how are you?

(Jacks finds another group of people stuck in the building like him)

PEOPLE
How did you get up here? As far as we know down stairs is covered by water.

JACK
Yeah, it was but not as much on my floor. If I hadnt have found these stairs, I would have died.

PEOPLE
Thank God for saving you.

JACK
So, do you know what happened outside?

PEOPLE
I just heard over the radio, it was a Tsunami.

JACK
Oh My God, it just happened.

(The conversation still ongoing, they telling story about them self until dawn)

Lights up.

Set in a building office on the 8
th
floor, power out. Water rising rapidly.

JACK
What do I do? There isnt much time left. I cant sit around and wait for him to make up his mind,

BOSS
Listen up! Listen up!

(Everyone gathers to hear)

I will make my way towards the top of the building to try and wave down some help and you will
stay here.

JACK
Thats a death sentence.

BOSS
It is what we are going to do.

JACK
(timid but fierce)
I cant sit around here and wait for you to possibly come back for us. We all have families waiting
for you to return. It isnt fair to them if I dont even try to find a way to survive.

BOSS
The plan I have set in place will allow you to get to them at some point; however, its best if I try to
get out first and come back for you.

JACK
I refuse to stay here and die. I am going to find my own way out! You are all welcome to join me. We
must take our own fate into our own hands, not leave it with the man we let dictate our lives daily!
We no longer need to listen to him with the situation at hand. We must look out for ourselves!
Think of your families, they need us! Come with me!

Lights flicker on and off in the Rikunzentakata Civic Center. Civilians sit huddled in corners with
terrified looks on their faces. Isabelle sits scribbling on her notepad while Charlie looks over
her shoulder.

CHARLIE
I guess youll be able to write the big story youve been looking forward to the whole time, huh?

ISABEL
Hush Charlie. Just leave me alone for once.

CHARLIE
You ever think that we might not make it out of here alive? That maybe your article wont get
published after all?

ISABEL
Please Charlie, take your negativity somewhere else.

CHARLIE
Fine, suit yourself.

(CHARLIE walks over to a group of civilians
and begins to converse with them.

ISABEL continues writing on her notepad.)

ISABEL
(To herself)
Maybe hes right, maybe coming out in this storm just to write the perfect article was stupid of me.
Now Im stuck in the middle of a natural disaster, and my mom doesnt even know if Im safe or not.
Once again, my selfishness got in the way. But I refuse to give up. I will write about these horrific
events and hope to be published. We will make it out alive but what if we dont. What about my
mom? Ugh, why didnt I just listen? I wish we hadnt fought. What if I never see her again?

Lights up on ISABEL in the bathroom The sun has just crept over the horizon and sunlight fills the
kitchen. The room is cheery as ISABEL puts on her make up.

ANNALYSE
Isabel, I want to talk to you about your plans for this afternoon. Youre going out?

ISABEL
Yeah, Me and Charlie.

ANNALYSE
I dont like that boy. How old is he?

ISABEL
Hes 20.

ANNALYSE
Thats what I thought. Hes too old for you, Isa. I dont feel comfortable with you going out with him.
Youre only sixteen. Im not saying he has bad intentions, but your age difference worries me.

ISABEL
Mom! Were only four years apart. Hes the only real friend Ive got since you moved us halfway
across the world!

ANNALYSE
Isabel, you know I had no choice!

ISABEL
Mom, please! Just let me see him. Hes all I have


ANNALYSE
No.

ISABEL
Mom! Thats not fair!! I love him.

ANNALYSE
No, you dont.

ISABEL
How do you know? You dont even know what love is! Ever since Dad left youve been in your own
world. You hardly acknowledge that I exist, except when you want to punish me or keep me from
doing something.

ANNALYSE
Stop it. You have no idea what youre talking about.

ISABEL
Mom, if youll only listen, if you would just understand.

ANNALYSE
I dont want to hear another word Isabel. Not another word. I dont want you seeing that boy. That
is my final word about this.

ISABEL
But Mom.

ANNALYSE
NO BUTS!

ISABEL
Fine, but dont ever expect me to talk to you again. EVER!

(ISABEL storms out.)

ANNABEL
Isabel! Wait!

A small group of survivors are sitting in the stair well of the Rikunzentakata Civic center. They are
coming up with a plan of action but obviously with so many varying backgrounds and walks of life
opposition was bound to occur, ideals strengthened and tested. (each role will be played by the
respective character creator)

BEN
I hope you have all made peace with our savior

CHARLIE
You mean YOUR savior! I dont understand how you Christians can succumb to the infinite stupidity
in that book of yalls?

BEN
(chuckling)
You know its because of the this book

(he raises his left hand flaunting a tethered old bible)

that I have not came over and stomped you a new As..

CHRIS
(interjecting the Baptist preacher before he finished)

HEY! HEY! Watch it we are in this hell whole as one. So you gentlemen need to get it together!

JACK
What do we from here? (in very brazen tone)

CHRIS
Head to the top.

CHARLIE
It wont be long before this entire building is submerged in that black murk. (Looking at the rising
water) were you gonna consult with your God before you made such an obvious step towards
safety



BEN
(opening the bible ignores stephen)

CHRIS
Great. Looks like we have a plan lets move.

JACK
Hey why are we listening to him! ( angrily)

CHRIS
Look you dont have to follow. I know where Im going.

JACK
Im just saying you have made the last 2 decisions and Im tired of listening to you. Youre nothing
but an exaction hero.

CHRIS
(Glaring at the business man)

CHARLIE
Soldier Id like to know who you turn to when you cannot count upon yourself

BEN
(stepping up and patting Chris on the back)
He is a good ole Christian boy arent you son?

Dark room filled with many people all visibly frightened and disoriented. A man named Charlie y is
seen in the corner in the fetal position.

CHARLIE
How could this possibly be happening! I just came out here to take some pictures and now I might
not make it out. Begins sobbing (doesnt make sense for him to be delivering mail, when hes talking
with ISABEL about her article)

Focus on BEN a man who is keeping his composure.

BEN
You okay man? Everything will be all right I promise.

CHARLIE
How the hell can you say that at a time like this? Were stuck in a building that could either collapse
on us or drown us to death.

BEN
The reason I know that well be okay is because I have faith in God.

CHARLIE
How do you expect your God to save you here?

BEN
I dont know that he will, however I know I have lived a righteous life and I done everything in my
power to be a good Christian. If I survive I get to keep on living a holy life. If I die I spend eternity in
heaven so its really a win, win situation. Smiles in content

CHARLIE
I sure as hell havent lived a holy life. I could tell you stories from college that would make you
cringe and cause you to run to your nearest church and beg for forgiveness.

Laughs at some distant memory.

Maybe youre right, maybe I should talk to the big man upstairs and try and make peace.

The power is out. People scream as the pressure of the water breaks through the glass and floods the
lower levels of the hospital.

Ben, a Baptist missionary eagerly gets everyones attention.

Ben
Everyone! May I Please have your attention!

Survivor 1:
What do you have to say thats so important at a time like this?!

Survivor 2:
Hey! Let the man speak! Maybe he has an idea to get out of here!

Ben:
The missionary stands up on a computer desk that he finds pushed up against the wall.

Brothersf! Unfortunately I cannot offer you a physical way out of this situation. However I want to
share with you a spiritual way to a perfect place that holds no pain or suffering!

Survivor 1:
Oh brother Look guy, were not buying into your Jesus will save us story

Ben:
You people can listen to this nay sayer but what I offer is the truth! Jesus indeed cannot be here
physically to save you, but he welcomes all of his followers into eternal paradise!

Survivor 2:
Im not sure what to believe All my life my parents taught me that science was the real religion.
That this life is nothing but a huge cycle..

Survivor 1:
Thats what you should believe! This guy is nuts!

Survivor 2:
Hey! Unless you have any better ideas I would like to hear, shut it!
Ben is nearly shaking from excitement that he might have a chance to witness to his first person and
hopefully lead him to Christ.

Survivor 1 storms out of the room they are in and slams the door behind him

Ben :
Do you see that? God has put conviction on your heart and has told you that something has been
missing from your life all this time. God is a jealous God and desperately wants your attention. He
desires most from you to worship him in this life so that you can share eternity in paradise by His
side!


Survivor 2:
Ben, your words have inspired me to want to accept this mysterious savior as my Lord. I dont want
any more suffering or pain. I am ready to embrace him with open arms.

Ben:
He already has my brother. Now rise and stand proud about your brave decision! Jesus will deliver
you from this place!

Survivor 1 has been listening and has started to realize that Ben may have a point.
He whispers under his breath

Survivor 1:
Well at least he only has encouraging words to offer.. I dont think I could say the same thing about
me. I wonder if he is right about Jesus delivering us

Within moments the sound of helicopter blades start humming above the hospital.
