Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
I wish to congratulate the Government of Myanmar, the Union of Myanmar Federation of
Chambers of Commerce & Industry (UMFCCI) and the Asian Strategy & Leadership
Institute (ASLI) for jointly organising The 11th ASEAN Leadership Forum in Nay Pyi Taw,
Myanmar. It is held in conjunction with the May ASEAN Summit chaired by Myanmar.
Starting as a Malaysian initiative some 15 years ago, the annual series of ASEAN
Leadership Forums have now become an important ASEAN regional event bringing
together Government, Business and Academic Leaders to deliberate on the future of
ASEAN and the strategic challenges and key issues facing ASEAN.
Today ASEAN Connectivity and Centrality will drive ASEAN forward towards a more
regionally connected community. We are in the last leg the nal lap to the ASEAN
Economic Community by December 2015. As the Chair of ASEAN in 2015, Malaysia hopes
to further strengthen People Connectivity in ASEAN and help make ASEAN a more
people centred community. Increasingly we need to make ASEAN more people-friendly
and enable the younger generation to have a better sense of ASEAN consciousness.
I believe that Myanmars Chairmanship of ASEAN and its focus on Regional Peace and
Prosperity is relevant and timely. With sustained peace and greater prosperity ASEAN
can scale new heights of achievements. The negotiations for the Regional
Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) will promote ASEAN
Centrality and greater economic prosperity with its tie up to a three billion population
connecting 16 countries in the region.
Once again, I welcome The ASEAN Leadership Forum and hope that its deliberations will
contribute new ideas for ASEAN. I wish the organisers and the delegates great success.
I look forward to welcoming you to Malaysia in 2015 when Malaysia assumes the
Chairmanship of ASEAN.

The ASEAN Leadership Forum (ALF) is an annual high powered Forum held alongside the April/May Summit of
ASEAN Leaders.
The ALF has been held in Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Singapore and Phnom Penh over the years and will
convene in May this year in Myanmar, in conjunction with Myanmar's chairmanship of ASEAN. The ALF will be held
just after the May Summit of ASEAN Leaders in Myanmar.
The ALF has been recognised as an important regional event bringing together Government, Business and Thought
Leaders to discuss the critical issues and challenges facing ASEAN. The ALF provides an apt and timely platform for
Leaders from Governments of ASEAN Member states together with Business and Academic Leaders to share
valuable thoughts on the future direction of ASEAN and where it is headed. It also provides a timely opportunity
for participants to feel the pulse of ASEAN and the rhythm of development in ASEAN particularly in ASEAN
community building.
This year is even more critical for ASEAN as it is the penultimate year for the actualisation of the ASEAN Economic
Community by 2015, as well as the building of new regional architecture such as the Regional Comprehensive
Economic Partnership Agreement and the Trans Pacic Partnership Agreement. Where will RCEP and TPPA leave
ASEAN? Can ASEAN remain in the driving seat with these new trading agreements?
At the same time with China, Japan, EU and other dialogue partners of ASEAN wanting to deepen their relationships
with ASEAN, the prospects for ASEAN continue to be bright and the regional economic outlook looks robust. Yet ASEAN
faces many issues and threats including non traditional security threats that need to be looked into. ASEAN connectivity
is another key area to address and the perspectives of the younger generation on the future of ASEAN community
building needs to be also considered. Vast business opportunity in Myanmar and the ASEAN countries will also be
discussed at the 11th ASEAN Leadership Forum.
The ASEAN Leadership Forum provides a timely platform for the sharing of views and for senior level interchanges on the
future of ASEAN and what the region will look like going forward.
It is a must attend event and a highly relevant programme for Business Leaders, Top Executives and Civil Society and
Academic Leaders to join Government Leaders to deliberate on the future of ASEAN and what leadership challenges
ASEAN needs to address.
It is a must come to Forum to have questions on ASEAN answered and debated.
Past Keynote speakers include the Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vice President of Indonesia, as
well as Senior Ministers and corporate CEOs from the region.
ASEAN COMES TO MYANMAR
2014 is an exciting and epochal year for Myanmar as it assumes for the 1st time ever the Chairmanship of ASEAN and
related Summits like ASEAN+3 and East Asia Summit. The eyes of the region and the world will be on Myanmar. Myanmar
presents new business and investment opportunities as it continues to open up. Join us at the 11th ASEAN Leadership
Forum held on the back of the 1st ASEAN Summit to be chaired by Myanmar in May to be updated on latest developments
on the ASEAN front and to better feel the pulse of ASEAN regional economic integration. Also learn rst hand the

CONFIRMED ROLE-PLAYERS
Also learn rst hand the
enormous new opportunities available in Myanmar. Learn about the potential and prospects in Myanmar.

Jointly Organised by
Opening Speech
H.E. U Thein Sein
President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar
Strategic Partner Dinner Host and
Strategic Partner
Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office
Message from the Prime Minister
