Contexts of Business Strategy and Development

Task 1.
In an effort to reposition Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 and to ensure that the emirate will remain globally
competitive and flexible Dubai unveiled its 2020 !conomic Strategy Plan "!SP# which targets to
create a sustainable growth and development plan$ !SP changed business procedures and open a new
environment for new global investors across several industries such as small and medium enterprise
"S%!# tourism and infrastructure investments$ &he ob'ective of !SP is to diversify Dubai(s economy
on non)oil sectors such as ban*ing and finance which have showed high growth performance$ +ecent
research shows the most profitable companies in ,-! which include. "1# !tisalat "2# DP /orld "0#
1ational 2an* of -bu Dhabi "3# 4irst 5ulf 2an* "5# -bu Dhabi 6ommercial 2an* "7# !mirates

4or purposes of this assignment we are going to review the business strategy and development of DP
/orld "shipping# 12D !mirates "ban*ing# and !maar "real estate# in relation with their performance
and growth$ &hese three companies represent three industries that play important role in Dubai business
environment$
P1. Correlation Between DP World's Strategic Contexts and Terminology and its Performance
2usinesses are guided by specific principles that serve as guidelines on procedures and processes
targets and focus and the entire flow of action ta*en by the company$ &he importance of this matter is
well expressed on how a company formulate its strategic contexts and terminology as clearly
represented on its business vision mission goals and ob'ectives and core competencies "4risendal
2012#$ <therwise it would be difficult if not impossible for a business to develop business strategies
mainly because they don(t have a foundation to start with$ Simply strategic contexts and terminology is
the foundation of all activities underta*en by any organi=ation irrespective of its class and model$
&o understand these points let us review DP /orld one of the biggest businesses in Dubai$ DP /orld
is a global logistic or shipping company operating more than 70 ports in six continents$ &he company(s
revenue heavily rely on container handling$ DP /orld handled almost 55 million &!, or twenty)foot
e>uivalent container units for the year 2011 and the company declared ?2 :89 000 revenue$ &he
company is head>uartered in Dubai which beneficial to the emirate(s goal of staying global and at par
with global business trend$
&o clearly understand how DP /orld maintained its mar*et growth it is essential to review its vision
mission goals and ob'ectives and core competencies on the value of strategic contexts and
terminology$ DP /orld(s vision says @Sustainable value through global growth services and
excellence$A &he company(s vision expresses the long)term foundation and @picture previewA of the
company as it @hoped to exist in a future period "Ireland et$ al$ 2009 p$ 25#$A In the context of
international companies li*e DP /orld the vision must be deployed on its regional organi=ation to
align with the future development of the company$
In the value of describing the environment or the strategic context of DP /orld the language of its
vision is clear and expressed$ /ith its @11 developments and ma'or expansions underway in 10
countries "www$dpworld$com#A in *ey mar*et countries such as 6hina and India the company aims to
maintain its global growth through an expansive services which now include ferries and terminal
services$
&he second component of a company(s vision is written on its mission statement$ -ccording to <gbor
"200:# the company(s mission allows the organi=ation @to craft a business brand or reputationA from
which the @business will become *nown "p$ 293#$A DP /orld(s mission statement anchors on *eeping
@excellence innovation and profitabilityA to ensure @exceptional customer service$A &he successful
performance of DP /orld in logistics can be traced to the satisfaction customers receive from the
services provided by the company$ In *eeping up with the demand of its @exceptional customer
serviceA DP /orld continually expands its operations to cater to global mar*ets which is in
congruence to its vision$
2ased on the context and terminology used in its vision and mission DP /orld(s goals and ob'ectives
maintained the same spirit although aimed at accomplishing long)term plans that will help reali=e the
company(s mission "Smith 2002#$ 4or instance in the aim of staying globally competitive the move to
put a ,S)based head>uarter "although the move was controversially stopped# could have reali=ed the
vision statement of @global growthA$ In fact we find the company(s mission which aim to *eep @a
global approach to a local business environmentA expressing where DP /orld wants to go "1i'ssen B
4rambach 2000#$ &he successful performance of DP /orld is attributed on how it successful the
company created local head>uarters in *eeping up with the global demands$
DP /orld(s successful performance is guarded by its core values or competencies which the company
harnessed to reali=e its vision and mission$ -t the top of these competencies is its innovation on
corporate and technology$ 4or the past years DP /orld invested on its people to ensure that the
company will be able to cope with demand of @exceptional customer serviceA through professional and
s*illed wor*force$ In the same manner the company has also poured large investments on facilities and
new technologies that will enhance their capability to deliver to their customers and business partners$
1onetheless DP /orld(s advantage of global arms had continued with new investment on pro'ects such
as the Condon 5ateway"<xford 2usiness 5roup 2009#$
-ccording to /alters "2003# @to understand the complex web of ideas$$$ we have to appreciate its role
in setting the context and giving a guiding purpose to the operations "p$ 1#$A DP /orld was able to
create a strong and clear expression of its context therefore giving the company a fair opportunity to
understand the sophisticated components of their business$ <verall the vision and mission of the
company hit the same note and do it straightforwardly$ -s a result ob'ectives and goals are more
patterned to the said vision)mission to ensure achievement of them$ -s always the foundation of the
business means its success and this is where DP /orld gains a vantage point$
P. Strategic Planning of !mirates "BD "700#
Strategic planning is defined as being @directed at determining a uni>ue business mission which ta*es
into consideration the external environment and the capabilities of the business and which enables the
business to develop a strategy$$$ with the greatest potential ";roon 1::5 p$ 107#$A Dunne et$ al$
"2010# further defined strategic planning as an adaptive measure of the company using @resources of
the firm to the opportunities and threatsA of the ever)changing business environment$ 6ompanies that
failed to ac*nowledge strategic planning often fail to create positive actions toward the
accomplishment of their vision and mission$
-s we are reviewing contexts of business strategy and development in Dubai let us explore the
strategic planning of !mirates 12D$ !mirates 12D is considered the largest ban*ing company based
in the %iddle !ast in terms of financial assets$ Dead>uartered in Dubai ,-! this ban*ing group
operates in the ,nited ;ingdom Eatar the ;ingdom of Saudi -rabia with representative offices in
Iran India and Singapore$
- comprehensive strategic plan comes with various areas or elements that must be considered during
the planning process such as communication strategy vision)mission statements values or core
competencies implementation strategy and monitoring strategy$ !mirates 12D(s @Pay Fourself 4irstA
initiative and its partnership with -vaya cemented the approach on how the ban*ing group developed
their communication strategy either for internal or external benefits$ -ccording to the +esults
Presentation of the !mirates 12D released last Gune 2012 they have a @clear strategy in placed and is
focused on relentless execution$A &he company maintains a high level of implementation strategy to
carry out their plans and achieve their goals within their specific timeframe$
It is also worth mentioning that !mirates 12D(s strategy context and terminology are clearly expressed
in its vision and mission$ In fact the vision of the company is as simple as @to be globally recogni=ed
as the leading and most dynamic financial services provider in the %iddle !ast
"www$emiratesnbd$com#$A -s the leading retail ban*ing group in Dubai and in the entire ,-! with its
strong corporate investment ban*ing portfolio !mirates 12D aims to @.deliver outstanding value to its
shareholders customers and employees$A
<verall strategic planning help managers ma*e better strategic decisions that are advantageous and
beneficial to the company(s accomplishments of its goals and ob'ectives under the guideline of its
vision and mission "Dill B Gones 200:#$ Strategic planning methodologies are essential factors that
ensures the company(s survival even in the midst of an unpreditable or unstable business environment$
4or companies li*e the !mirates 12D in the ban*ing industry where financial instruments are volatile
and the entire environment is dependent on several external factors strategic planning is a leverage
against fluctuations and changes$
!mirates 12D follows a top)down business model wherein employees achievement of a target
depends on the decision of the top manager$ Strategic planning dictates managers to establish or define
tas*s or ob'ectives that should be achieved by the business$ &hese tas*s or ob'ectives are distributed
across different department and levels$ /ithout a clear definition of a plan employees would be
beating the air for nothing$
/hen employees understand what is the goal of the organi=ation managers can implement or execute
the plan without delay$ -n advantage of strategic planning is setting up a time schedule for tas*s to be
done and for ob'ectives to be accomplished$ /ith the guiding schedule it is easier for the organi=ation
to achieve its goals$ In the same manner each tas* is calculated to ensure that they have a positive
impact on the vision and mission of the company$ 4or !mirates 12D the goal is to become a global
ban*ing services provider and they are accomplishing through strategic expansion on other *ey
mar*ets$
/ith more than 9 000 employees !mirates 12D has a massive team of professionals and well)trained
financial providers that can translate the goal of the organi=ation into reality$ -s part of the *ey element
of strategic planning it is very important for organi=ation to have a tas* force that will implement
specific areas of the ob'ectives$ Strategic planing dictates managers to assign tas*s to definite members
of the team to maximi=e the impact of the wor*force$
Dowever according to %onahan "2001# @employees must have analytical s*ills to evaluate the
processes they use and clarify what is expected of them both by the managers and by customers$A
5enerally managers should understand that strategic plans will only be effective if those who
implement these plans are involved in coming up with this plan$ <therwise it would alienate the team
from telling managers what is wrong in terms of practice H not in theory alone$
Strategic planning is an essential part of the business(s performance$ /ithout clear definition of a plan
it is impossible to accomplish them$ In !mirates 12D strategic planning stands supreme to ensure they
can deliver the best$ In the same manner the company wor*s on the different areas of plan to *eep
everything on chec* from their @relentless executionA to the communication strategy for internal
purposes "employees# and for external concerns "customers#$
P#. Business Strategies of !maar
&here are numerous planning techni>ues and plans that can be applied on strategic planning processes
to arrive at a certain level of action that can counterfight the impact of a changing business and
economic environment$ Strategic planning is central to the development of a strong business concept
and strategy for !maar$ !maar is a real)estate company that wor*s on changing the lifestyle destination
of Dubai Downtown$ /ith partnership with different companies across different global mar*ets !maar
plans to develop more advanced master)planned communities to provide wider options for consumers$
&he long)term mission of !maar is to ma*e it a globally)competitive brand with diversified portfolio$
2efore ma*ing recommendations on the different techni>ues and systems that can be used to develop a
strategic plan for !maar it is essential to review the different planning systems and behavioral
approaches that are widely)used by companies across different industries around the world$ &here are
three basic planning systems used in strategic planning namely. formal planning informal planning
and behavioral approaches$ -ccording to Steiner "2010# formal strategic planning is an effort to
duplicate what goes on in the mind of a brilliant intuitive planner$ &he stress of this system is the
outcome of a rational thin*ing and planning process "Dill B Gones 200:# on the rationale the
businesses wor* under a more predictable environment that plans will wor* as they are written and
conceived "%ohr et$ al$ 200:#$
<n the other hand informal planning system involves little complexity than formal strategic planning
";urat*o B Dodgetts 2009#$ In essence informal planning is more relaxed than it does not re>uire a
systematic procedure to under the business environment for the creation of a strategy$ %oreover there
are behavioral approaches used by some managers to create potential positive strategies$ &hese
approaches are based on behavioral models that are geared to promote short)term plans and
understanding of the business environment "Sutton 1:90#$
Strategic planning nonetheless also follows different ma'or planning techni>ues that help businesses
to outline their current environment and formulate certain strategies that will answer the demand of the
business environment$ &he 2oston 6onsulting 5roup "265# matrix wor*s on the performance of
specific products or goods that are offered by the organi=ation$ It is a very simplistic matrix that wor*s
on high and low report of goods which can be used by managers to create strategies especially on low
performing goods or products "4in*ler 2008 p$ 337#$ <n the other hand the directional policy matrix
is somewhat similar to S/<& analysis$ It re>uires managers to evaluate the environment of the
business to predict future direction of the business "+oney 2003#$
-nother ma'or planning techni>ue is SP-6! which stands for Strategic Position and -ction
!valuation$ &his techni>ue loo*s at the financial strength and competitive advantage of the firm to
confirm a strategic posture of the company in the future "-braham 2012#$ /hile PI%S or Profit
Impact of %ar*ing Strategy is focused on more than twenty)five variables evaluated on a linear
regression model "+oney 2003#$
<ther methodologies used in strategic planning include S/<& and P!S&!C$ S/<& or Strengths
/ea*nesses <pportunities and &hreats provides @a brief overview of essential and relevant
information about internal assets as well as the mar*et audit "Pahl B +ichter 200:#A$ P!S&!C on the
other hand stands for Political !conomic Social &echnological !co)Cogical and Cegal which
stresses on the environment audit of the business to create a strategic plan for the future action of the
business$
-s a recommendation for !maar(s strategic plan to counter the impact of the changing business
environment top managers or strategic planning executives can utili=e S/<& or P!S&!C to
understand its environment$ Due to the fact that real)estate industry is very volatile a clear *nowledge
of all factors contributing to the said change is essential to the formulation of an effective strategy$ 2oth
S/<& and P!S&!C can provide a mar*et or an environment audit that gives an overview of the
current position of the business$
2ased on the audit through the mentioned techni>ues planning executives can use the formal planning
system$ /ith formal planning !maar focuses on what is being forecasted$ 2ut as mentioned the
volatility and changing nature of the real)estate industry re>uires the organi=ation to react in the
shortest possible time H and only informal planning can do that$ !maar can shift from formal planning
to informal planning during the intervals of the formal planning strategy$ <n the other hand informal
planning serves as the >uic* S)+ of the organi=ation$
Castly it is also recommended that strategic planning for !maar be bro*en$ Decentrali=ed strategic
planning allows those who are in the actual mar*et to react without the approval of the executives$ &his
is a very important part of real)estate industries that wor* on various climate$ Delay on reaction and
plan can only mean losses and can damage master)planned communities such as those developed by
!maar$
Task 2.
P1. !mirates "BD's Strategic Positioning and $%!'s !conomic !nvironment
Dubai(s 2020 !conomic Strategy Plan changed business procedures streamline business activities and
increase infrastructure and business investments in the region$ -s a result it provided wider and steeper
competition among businesses$ /ith the !SP Dubai attracts more foreign and local investments on
ban*ing and finance or as an indirect result of economic appreciation$ -s a result !mirates 12D
being one of the leaders in this industry may find itself competing with new foreign or local players$
4or !mirates to accomplish and remain at its productivity and profitability it is necessary to formulate
new plans that will translate the company(s vision)mission into reality$ /ith this intent it is necessary
to create an an audit of !maar(s environment$
Since its inception in 2008 !mirates 12D has cemented itself as one of the industry leaders with a
thrust on the development of ban*ing services that are beneficial and essential to customers or clients$
!mirates 12D is the result when !mirates 2an* International merged with 1ational 2an* of Dubai
ma*ing the new ban* the biggest and largest ban*ing group in Dubai and in the whole ,nited -rab
!mirates$ /ith more than 131 branches and more than 830 automated teller machines !mirates 12D
cemented itself as the main financial services provider of the region$ &he strength of the company
envelops its retail ban*ing and corporate ban*ing franchise$ Dowever with the aim of becoming a
global financial and ban*ing leader !mirates 12D has only few representative offices on few *ey
mar*ets$ Fet if viewed on another perspective these low number of overseas offices and head>uarters
!mirates 12D can turn the business tides to their favor$
&he current diversification of !mirates 12D has changed the environment for the ban*ing champion
within the Dubai and ,-! region$ It is a good note that the company has diversified its investments on
various industries giving it a leverage on value$ /ith a 9 000)strong wor*force the ban*ing group has
made itself more than 'ust a ban*ing institution but also a financial)investment company$ Its mar*et
diversification to include asset management and bro*erage services has provided the company better
value$ +ight now they have created a financial value for the company even if the ban*ing and
investments is not considered$
1onetheless !mirates 12D(s ban*ing mar*et demography has largely changed to fit the current
environment of Dubai$ &he appreciation of businesses especially in retail corporate ban*ing is not
enough to cater personal mar*et demographics or retail ban*ing franchise$ &he isolation and
confinement of !mirates 12D on a specific population may lead to exhaustion$ <nce the demographic
mar*et gets exhausted it is impossible for !mirates 12D to remain profitable and productive$ It is
essential for the business to expand and extend its reach on other demographic mar*ets li*e what the
ban*ing group did on its growing retail ban*ing franchise$ /ith the diversified networ*s and portfolio
of !mirates 12D understanding the culture and values of the mar*et is a top concern$ /ith the
demographic mar*et of the ban*ing group it is necessary to understand from time to time how people
react to the luxury options offered by the company$
&he current behavior of Dubai business environment poses a tremendous weight and burden on
companies and not 'ust on !mirates 12D$ /ith the understanding of its environment it would be
easier for top managers to create strategies that will position the company in Dubai(s business and
economic environment$
P. !mirates "BD !nvironment %udit
-side from a clear understanding of the business internal environment an external mar*et audit is also
very important to review the external mar*et or environment of !mirates 12D$ It will provide an
overview of other contributing factors that may affect the direction profitability and success
performance of the business$ 4or the purpose of this environment audit P!S&!C and Porter(s five
forces analysis will be used$
&he recent 2020 !conomic Strategy Plan provided a dramatic change on policy ma*ing in the region$
&he government streamlined the function of businesses and institutions even simplifying the business
procedures for new ecosystems that are more open for investments and ventures$ /ith the 2020 !SP
economic behavior in Dubai has appreciated which increases the economic growth of the region$ &his
economic upheaval or movement affects !mirates 12D in such a way that businesses across different
industries need the ban*ing and financial services sector to serve their purpose$ &he economic growth
of the region on the other hand provides !mirates 12D an opportunity to diversify its investment
portfolio especially on infrastructure and its vertical industries$
!mirates 12D 9 000)strong human resources come from various culture and social norms$ -s the
growth of the business appreciates cultural differences of wor*ers may result to organi=ational changes
and remodeling which is essential to cope with this wor*force situation$ <n the other hand the
consciousness of the populace in Dubai over ban*ing and finance can also provide a positive outloo*
for !mirates 12D personal ban*ing than 'ust corporate ban*ing$ -s part of its thrust to *eep !mirates
12D at par with its global counterparts the ban*ing group wor*s with -vaya to create a formidable
and reliable I& infrastructure and architecture that will enhance the services of the company$ It also
creates a communication system that will increase the S)+ time of divisions and departments in
resolving issues with customers$
&he 2020 !SP opens Dubai for a better tourism which is a great advantage for many businesses$
Indirectly !mirates 12D can generate from this development but it can also tap another aspect of this
situation$ In fact new services can be opened by !mirates 12D to provide for expats and other sectors$
<n the other hand Dubai(s legal limitations and cap on ban*ing sector may also provide a wea*ness on
!mirates 12D(s desire to become one of the leading financial group of the world$
-s mentioned the introduction of !SP on the context of business environment the economic behavior
of the region attracts new foreign and local players$ /ithin the ban*ing system as Dubai opens up its
mar*ets for foreign investments it may also yield to new competitors for !mirates 12D$ In the same
manner as the economic activity of the region rises it will always demand for new ban*ing players$
4urthermore these new ban*ing)industry players may open services to streamline products for
individuals and S%!s$ <r new players may create a better investment options for companies in the
region that are loo*ing for capitali=ation$
In this context of competition customers will always get the best$ -s a result customers have strength
to demand for lower ban*ing and investment fees and better or newer products and services that will
cater their needs$ !mirates 12D should *eep a good chec* on these areas to ensure that their customers
will not reduce into a certain number due to the untapped section of the mar*et$ <n the other hand as
new ban*ing players enter the mar*et the inflow of deposits may reduce which will affect the
investment portfolio of the company$
In understanding these overall forces it is necessary to evaluate the intensity of the competition$ -s
such innovation on services and products must be evaluated to counter the intensity of competition or
new mar*ets be explored and exploited to diversify into relax mar*ets$
P#. %nalysis of !mirates "BD's !xternal !nvironment
&o further understanding of !mirates 12D(s external factors let us review some techni>ues that are
used by most organi=ations to evaluate their external mar*et$ &he external environment of a business is
a very broad or wide area that its sections must be studied carefully and analy=ed succinctly$ <therwise
it would be hard for strategic planners to create effective strategies that have positive impact on the
direction of the business$
4or purposes of understanding the external factor of !mirates 12D let us use the sta*eholder analysis
to evaluate *ey sta*eholders of any action ta*en by the ban*ing company$ Should the company its
investment portfolio it also entails higher operating cost for the company which will reduce the
dividends of corporate stoc*holders$ &his is very important to note that for any action of the company
the primary concern is the interest of stoc*holders$ &his is a common practice of the corporate world
because sta*eholders can stop pro'ects at their will$ 4or instance if !mirates 12D intends to establish
new offices on *ey mar*ets or cities such action may reduce unappropriated retained earnings thus
directly affecting available funds for dividends$
<n the other hand it is necessary to note that if !mirates 12D intends to expand it may need
employees transferred to another location$ &his would result to a socio)cultural problem "based on our
P!S&!C analysis of !mirates 12D# which would result to low performance or lac* of organi=ational
culture for a unified goals and ob'ectives$ <ther sta*eholders affected by such move are customers$
/ith the establishment of new head>uarters customers may 'ust transfer to another one rendering the
former reduced in terms of productivity and profitability$
%oreover it is necessary for !mirates 12D to identify factors that will affects its survival$ 4or one
what customers need at the moment is very vital for the ban*ing group$ /ith the introduction of 2020
!SP capitali=ation is a need among corporate clients$ &hus the ban*ing group must open itself to these
investments than itself deposits or cash inflow$ In the same manner the business must be ready with the
high level of withdrawal or cash outflow aside from the capitali=ation investments as more corporate
clients get their assets to invest on more income)generating activities$ -ltogether it is necessary for the
organi=ation to be ready to provide for its customers whatever they need$
<n the other hand it is necessary for !mirates 12D to change its economic or organi=ational value to
survive$ 4or instance if products and services of the ban*ing group are not meeting the demands of
customers it is imperative and inevitable for the business to change its course of action to serve the
customers$ -daptive measure is a vital part of business strategy$
In the process of understanding the movement of the business it is necessary to chec* the mar*et
attractiveness$ &he current Dubai business environment with the introduction of !SP poses different
areas that can mean a lot for a business$ /ith !mirates 12D new policy on investments on
infrastructures and other vertical industries open a high attraction for investments$ In fact heavy
industries in Dubai have already grown with the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 and 2020 !SP reinforced
this growth which is a great advantage for !mirates 12D which has a large asset portfolio$
<n the other hand the other side of the spectrum shows that corporate ban*ing may not appreciate due
to the large investment opportunities opened for companies in Dubai$ &he scenario re>uires the ban*ing
group to divest on other *ey services li*e retail ban*ing and personal ban*ing$
Simply the need for a business to evaluate its current business environment both internal and external
is a vital part of strategic planning$ !xecutives cannot 'ust direct new strategies and actions for the
business without careful analysis of the mar*et$ <therwise strategies may not effectively translate the
demand of the mar*et and the business itself$
