approximately 7.4 x 7), but also for using a differently cropped version of Joel Bernsteins classic boardwalk
shot, which depicts considerably more of the Palace Amusements building in the photos upper-left
background area (right underneath the title lettering) than most other worldwide releases that utilized the same
artwork (the only exception being Canada, where a similar version of the photo was used). This detail is most
apparent when looking at the Palaces rooftop, with seven-and-a-half of its eight FUN HOUSE letter signs (as
opposed to just five) being visible here. Standard stock copies were also distributed as promos (despite the fact
that genuine white labels were pressed for this single in Australia [see below]), featuring Not For Sale Sample
Record rubber stamps added to the labels.

Comments: From this release onwards, CBS Australia started to constantly use standard orange/yellow label

occasionally utilized as well). Also, CBS Australias catalog number codes assigned to Springsteen 45s were now
identical to their respective European counterparts. This particular single is known to exist with two different

Comments: Extremely rare Bolivia-only EP, manufactured by domestic CBS licensee Heriba Ltda., and marking
the only worldwide release of No Surrender on the 7 format. Unique rear sleeve artwork features Annie
Leibovitz black-and-white E Street Band group shot from the Born In The U.S.A. albums inner bag. English
and Spanish song titles on both labels. The highest price paid for a copy on eBay at the time of writing was $1,275,
in late October 2010.

Tunnel Of Love/Aint Got You//Brilliant Disguise/One Step Up
Comments: One of the rarest worldwide Springsteen releases on the format, also unique to Bolivia, and marking
the only 7 vinyl appearance of Aint Got You. As its predecessor, this EP again was manufactured by Heriba

echo chamber effect, with the sound bleeding from one groove into the next. This particular configuration
was only released in North America and the Philippines.

Comments: This was the first Costa Rican Springsteen 45 to feature an interesting (and unique) alteration of the
classic CBS sunburst label color scheme, using shades of pink rather than the original orange/yellow tones,
although a standard sunburst-style pressing from that country does exist as well (see below). The pink label
issue circulates in two different variants; one having the running times printed next to the song titles, and the
other one with running times in the right center area. It is most likely that CBS Costa Rica did not have access to a
master of the standard Dancing In The Dark non-album B-side, Pink Cadillac, and hence were forced to use
another Born In The U.S.A. album track in its place, which resulted in this exclusive coupling.

Comments: Extremely rare promo issue that was in fact undocumented until June 2010, when a copy first
surfaced in an eBay auction and eventually changed hands for a whopping $629/508 (another example, sold in
late August 2011, even fetched $1,630.86). Label of the playing side features a red Disco Promo/No Disponible
Para La Venta imprint; the B-side label is blank white.

Leap Of Faith (one-sided promotion-only release)

Comments: Another Costa Rican super-rarity that had been widely unknown to the Springsteen collecting
community prior to its first eBay appearance in June 2013 (final bid was $1,303). A second copy sold there the
following November changed hands for the even higher amount of $1,457. Same label design as the above 57
Channels promo.

ECUADOR
Dancing In The Dark/Working On The Highway

Label info: Dark orange CBS/IFESA paper labels; large center hole
Comments: The only documented Springsteen 7 from Ecuador, pressed and distributed by domestic
manufacturers IFESA (Industria Fonografica Ecuatoriana S.A.) on behalf of CBS. As was the case in several
other Central and South American countries, the choice of another Born In The U.S.A. album track for this
singles B-side most likely was due to the company not having access to a master of Pink Cadillac. Both labels
feature song titles in English and Spanish. Copies of the record are circulating in a large variety of different die-
cut IFESA logo sleeves; including red/white, purple/blue/white, yellow/green/black or yellow/red/black
plastic bags and red/blue/beige or brown/blue paper sleeves.

FRANCE
Label info: Brown plastic-injected CBS labels; large center hole
Comments: As opposed to the second domestically-pressed French single, Cadillac Ranch (see below), this 45
was issued with brown plastic labels only. An unknown number of copies included white/red France Disques
jukebox title strips. It is of note that, in addition to their own original issue, CBS France also had pressings of the
single imported from Holland, which not only featured standard orange/yellow sunburst paper labels, but also
came in a different picture sleeve utilizing the more widespread boardwalk front artwork and a specific rear
design (see relevant entry in the Holland discography).

Cadillac Ranch/Be True

Label info: Brown plastic-injected CBS labels; large center hole
Comments: France-only release in this form. An unknown number of copies were distributed specifically for
jukebox use, with a circular white Rserv Au Juke-Box Vente Interdite Au Public sticker added to the front of
the regular picture sleeve. Rear sleeve features an odd, vertically printed photo credit which just reads Photo:
X ... (the sleeve shot most likely was taken by Neal Preston). Note the sunburst paper label variant below.

Cadillac Ranch/Be True

The River/Ramrod
Comments: Rear sleeve has a typo of Stollen Car in the track listing for the River album. In addition to their
own domestic press run, CBS France also had import copies of the single made in Holland, where a misprinted
sleeve was produced with a lyric mix-up of The River and You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch) on rear
(see relevant entry in the Holland discography). The genuine French version, however, is considerably more
difficult to track down than its Dutch counterpart.

GREECE

Comments: The only Springsteen 7 known to have been pressed in Greece. This 45 is so rare that the first
photographic evidence of its very existence didnt turn up on the internet before early 2008, when a major
Japanese collector (who eventually sold his copy on eBay for $3,926 later the same year) provided pictures of the
single to the Lost In The Flood website. The sleeve accompanying this example featured a large red Not For
Sale PROMOTIONAL sticker, which was not present on an otherwise identical second copy that surfaced on
eBay in late September 2009 and changed hands for only $1,580.55 (despite being in superior overall condition
to the first one). A third example offered there in April 2012 (final bid: $3,371) featured a different grey/black CBS
logo sleeve similar to the type used in the UK during the 1970s, but adding a specific Manufactured in Greece for
CBS RECORDS OF GREECE S.A. imprint at the bottom. With hardly any solid background information
available, it remains unclear to this day whether the single ever saw a proper commercial release on the Greek
market, or if it was in fact a promo-only item. Note that the Music-Box rear sleeve imprint found on two of the
three copies that have reached the collectors market in recent years refers to an Athens-based record
manufacturing company that had distributed CBS Greeces product domestically since the late 1960s and was still
in operation at the time of writing.

HOLLAND
Packaging: Unique black-and-white picture sleeve

Comments: Front sleeve artwork is widely identical to the less common German pressing.


Badlands/Something In The Night
Comments: Front sleeve artwork is widely identical to the less common German pressing. Oddly, an unknown
number of circulating examples feature slightly enlarged center holes. Misprinted copies exist with the B-side
label on both sides of the disc.

Badlands/Candys Room
Comments: This incredibly rare export pressing made for distribution in France marks the only release of
Candys Room on an official single of any format. Picture sleeve artwork features the same live shot of Bruce
that was also used for the Spanish issue of Badlands, but completely different, unique title graphics.

Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)/Night
Packaging: Unique color title sleeve
Comments: Highly obscure and extremely scarce Holland-only release. Some sources claim that the single was
available at Dutch record stores for no longer than about a week and then suddenly disappeared from the market,
so it may have been withdrawn (although this is unconfirmed); other rumours suggest that it was pressed in a
limited run of just 500 copies to begin with. Both Rosalita and Night also appeared on a (much more
common) 12 vinyl EP issued simultaneously in Holland, with the addition of Racing In The Street and a totally
different color picture sleeve, which actually marked the very first commercially available Springsteen release on
this format anywhere in the world. Bargain bin copies exist with cut sleeve corners. It is assumed that this
single was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the Rosalita live video clip taped in Phoenix, Arizona in

up stock for the French market did not adapt CBS Frances alternate picture sleeve artwork utilized for their own
domestic pressings of the single, which in this case featured the River album cover photo instead of Joel
Bernsteins boardwalk shot. Two different misprints of the Dutch vinyl exist, with either a blank B-side label or
an incorrect one for the Nina Hagen Bands 1980 My Way 3-track 7 EP (CBS 9030), listing the songs Alptraum
(edited version) and No Way. The latter variation is particularly rare.

Comments: Front sleeve artwork is widely similar to the much less common German pressing, although Be
True is not mentioned on the domestic Dutch sleeve.

of this single (with same catalog number and overall packaging) as well. Rear sleeve is misprinted, incorporating

misspelling of Stollen Car in the track listing for the River album (note that the lyric mix-up is not present on

Comments: Although manufactured in Holland (by Sonopresse B. V., a Rotterdam-based company specializing
solely in the production of flexi discs), this item was exclusively available as a freebie to subscribers of Austrian
pop magazine Rennbahn Express with their June 1981 issue (which featured a full-color Springsteen cover and
an enthusiastic two-page review of the 1981 Munich show), presenting The River as LP of the Month. In
addition to excerpts from the four album tracks listed above and a spoken moderation by Blue Danube Radio
DJ Brian Taylor, the disc also contains three unique, short live fragments from various US concert radio
broadcasts (see below for full details) not found on any other official release. Matrix code SHOL 3136 A
(SHOL being the default prefix used for all of Sonopresses flexis) is etched into the run-off groove; note that
the CBS 88510 imprint on the disc actually refers to the European catalog number for the River album.
Live fragment details:
1) The late Ed Sciaky (then DJ at WMMR-FM, the Philadelphia radio station that aired a delayed live
broadcast of the show that night) introducing Bruce and the E Street Band at The Main Point in Bryn
Mawr, Pennsylvania on February 5, 1975 (edited to avoid Sciakys references to both WMMR and the
concert venue itself).
2) Bruce joking about a recent newspaper picture of him, in which he looked like he was catchin flies, and
wondering who takes those kind of shots? This is from the July 7, 1978 show at The Roxy in Los Angeles,
California; broadcast by local radio station KMET-FM.
3) Bruce introducing the band during Rosalita at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey on
September 19, 1978; the full concert being broadcast by WNEW-FM in New York City.

Point Blank/Ramrod
Year of release: Unreleased/withdrawn (pressed in 1981)
Comments: This ultra-rare 7 was reported to have been scheduled as the fifth and final domestic Dutch single
from The River, around 1,000 copies of which had already been manufactured before its release was scrapped
for unknown reasons and most of the press run supposedly got destroyed. The first photographic evidence of its
existence turned up in the Spring 1989 issue (#28) of Backstreets magazine, which featured a black-and-white
facsimile of the front sleeve provided to the editors by a Swedish collector. The following year, a surviving
physical copy was finally located by brothers Phil and Steve Jump from the UK Badlands Springsteen specialist
store at a record fair in Perpignan, France, and eventually auctioned off via their magazine For True Rockers
Only for a staggering 1,650 (prices later realized for copies on eBay ranged from $849 to $5,000). Interestingly,
the rear sleeves fine print contains a copyright remark for 1982, although its catalog number clearly identifies the
single as a 1981 pressing. It is believed that less than 15 of these are now in the hands of collectors.

Point Blank/Ramrod

Comments: Somewhat mysterious small-center variant which appears to be a one-off and at the time of writing
resided with a collector in the Netherlands. The odd thing about this pressing is that CBS Holland did not start to
regularly manufacture 45s with small holes (normally used for export) prior to 1984, leaving its authenticity open
to debate.

Santa Claus Is Comin To Town (live)/Nobody Knows But Me (by Billy Joel) (promotion-only release)

fall of 1987. Since the 45 was not yet physically available at the time of the event, winners received a note from
CBS with details on the limited edition (which was later shipped to them) as well as general info about the
Brilliant Disguise single and Tunnel Of Love album in Dutch language. Picture sleeve features a special four-
line Promotional Copy, Not For Sale, Attentie CBS, Springsteendag 87 imprint in the rears lower left area,
while the disc itself is a standard domestic red label stock copy as described above.

bought more than half of the existing stock directly at the local Columbia depot before the records were
distributed, although it is unconfirmed if there is any truth to this somewhat obscure story). B-side was taken
from the In Concert/MTV Plugged album.

Lucky Town (Live Plugged Version)/Lucky Town (Lucky Town Album Version)
Comments: Issued for export to the UK and several other European countries. On an interesting side note,
Columbia/Sony UK went out of their way to promote this release by having Bruces live performance of Lucky
Town from the opening night of his 1993 tour at the S.E.C.C. in Glasgow on March 31 professionally filmed and
then broadcast on the popular TV show Top Of The Pops the following evening (although that stunt ultimately
did little to boost the records domestic sales). A particularly dubious review of the single appeared in the April
17, 1993 issue of British music paper Melody Maker, with a gentleman named David Bennun describing it like

most common of all commercial Italian Springsteen 7 releases from the 1970s.

Comments: Very rare due to its virtually non-existent original sales. In fact, this 45 did so poorly on the Italian
market that unsold copies were eventually given away as freebies with October 20, 1980 issues of domestic
magazine Music, which had special white/red Omaggio Music logo stickers added to the front sleeves and
A-side or B-side labels (such examples are often incorrectly referred to as promos). Note that some original
(non-stickered) stock copies again circulate with small triangular holes punched through their sleeves and labels
to presumably mark them as bargain bin items, while another, somewhat obscure (and presumably fake)
variant featured a full label cut-out hole on front (similar to the later Italian Hungry Heart, Dancing In The
Dark and Im On Fire jukebox promos, although no actual jukebox pressing of Badlands is known to exist).
The only versions of this single that can in fact be considered genuine promotional issues are the ones that have
purple Disco Campione Non Vendibile (sample record not for sale) stamps added to their regular labels;
such copies, however, are extremely hard to find.

Comments: Original first Japanese issue with unique artwork, featuring a gorgeous color portrait of Springsteen
taken by late photographer David Gahr. However, Bruce himself reportedly vetoed the use of Gahrs shot,
resulting in a withdrawal of the single in this particular form (although it appears that a substantial number of
copies had already been shipped prior to the recall, considering how often they turn up on the market these
days). Interestingly, Sony Japan used the exact same artwork again for a very rare promotional 2-track, 5 CD
single issued in conjunction with the Greatest Hits album in early 1995.

Comments: Both labels feature misprints of Lon Landau und Chuck Plorkin in the production credits.
Standard stock copies with the addition of circular green felt pen markings running around the A-side labels
outer rims reportedly are promos sent to local radio stations in advance of the singles commercial release; one
such example (housed inside a die-cut orange CBS HIT logo sleeve) turned up on eBay in late January 2011.

Comments: Both labels feature a misprint of John Landau in the production credits, while the B-side

(production credits on both labels) and Bod Clearmoutain (credits on B-side label). Note that the catalog
number is identical to European pressings of My Hometown.

Comments: Manufactured by South African licensee Gramophone Record Co. (Pty.) Ltd. on behalf of CBS. It is
of note that South African pressings of this 45 (carrying identical matrix numbers and hence undoubtedly coming
from the same plates) also saw distribution in Zimbabwe in altered form; featuring weird, generic white CBS
labels, and usually shipped inside die-cut brown/red/green Music Express paper sleeves. Whether these were
proper export issues or merely cheaply recycled leftover copies from South Africa is unknown, although
many seasoned collectors seem to support the latter theory.

Comments: Again, a Zimbabwe version exists with white labels, although this time not on CBS, but on Mute
Records (overall label design, however, is very similar to the abovementioned Dancing In The Dark variant).

Comments: One of the very few worldwide issues of this single that did not incorrectly refer to Lucky Man as a
Tunnel Of Love album track on its B-side label.

SPAIN
Comments: The first Springsteen 7 ever produced in Spain was already notable for featuring the only original
worldwide Born To Run picture sleeve whose design was not based on Eric Meolas photography for the
relevant LP artwork. Instead, it utilized an earlier (1973) band shot by David Gahr that still featured drummer
Vini Lopez and keyboarder David Sancious who, of course, no longer were around at the time of this singles
release (although Sancious can actually be heard playing on its A-side). Reissued in 1985 (see below for details).

Blinded By The Light/Spirit In The Night
Comments: No doubt prompted by the international chart success of Manfred Manns Earth Bands awkward
1976 cover version of Blinded By The Light, this odd Spain-only release exclusively coupled the first two (1973)
US Springsteen single A-sides on one disc. Both the sleeve and labels feature Spanish song title translations, with
Blinded By The Light actually re-translating to The Light Is Blinding My Eyes. Reissued in 1985 (see below
for details).

Comments: Spanish song title translations on both the sleeve and labels; rear sleeve features a John Landau
typo in the production credits. Never having been reissued, this remains one of the most sought-after Springsteen
45s from Spain. Regular stock copies were also distributed for domestic jukebox use in die-cut orange CBS El
Sonido De Los 70 (The Sound Of The 70s) logo sleeves.

Comments: Reissued in 1985 (see below for details). Standard stock copies again were distributed for jukebox use
in die-cut orange CBS El Sonido De Los 70 logo sleeves.

Comments: An incorrect running time for Held Up Without A Gun (1:00 instead of 1:15) is given on both the B-

Comments: Reissued in 1985 (see below for details). It is of note that CBS Spain simultaneously released this
single as a super-rare, double-sided 2-track cassette (CBS 9568K) that was sponsored by Pepsi and came in a blue
flip-top cardboard slipcase with different black-and-white artwork, featuring the River albums front cover
shot.

Sherry Darling/Be True (promotional release)
Comments: An unknown number of white label promos contained a photocopied 5-page article on the 1981
Barcelona concert (in size A4, folded to fit into the picture sleeve) lifted from the May 1981 issue of domestic
music magazine Vibraciones, alongside an additional page that utilized said issues Springsteen cover and also
featured a facsimile of a handwritten message from Bruce to his Spanish fans. These inserts, however, do not
correspond with the singles original release date (February 1981), so either they never were an official addition
to begin with, or the promo was in fact distributed a second time in order to gain extra radio airplay based on the
hype surrounding Springsteens debut live appearance in Spain.

Sherry Darling/Hungry Heart (promotion-only release for jukebox use)

Comments: The rarest of all Spanish Springsteen 7 singles. Curiously, neither the labels nor the sleeve feature
any markings whatsoever identifying this record as a promotional/jukebox-only item (also, its catalog number is
identical to the above commercial pressing [and in fact all other European issues] of Sherry Darling). Some
copies contained a typewritten jukebox title strip with the A-sides title in English, and Hungry Heart
translated to Spanish (Corazon Hambriento).

The River/Independence Day (commercial release)
Comments: Not reissued. Unfortunately, this was one of the last commercially released Spanish Springsteen 45 to
boast a truly exclusive picture sleeve, as the two domestic singles off Nebraska both resembled their respective
Dutch counterparts, and packaging for most of the countrys subsequent 7 stock pressings was mainly based on
the more uniform artwork designs used internationally from 1984 onwards.

The River/Independence Day (promotional release)
Comments: An unknown (yet presumably very limited) number of white label promos contained a stapled and
folded DJ info sheet consisting of two photocopied A4-size pages with typewritten Spanish text.

Comments: Front sleeve artwork is widely similar to the Dutch issue, but additionally features a vertically
printed photo credit in small red type in the lower-right area. Not reissued.

Comments: Alongside Holland and the UK, Spain was one of only three countries in the world to release this
single, which featured a non-album B-side not available on any other format for the next ten years. Front sleeve

issue noted below, standard Spanish stock copies also were distributed as promos, featuring Disco Promocional
- Propiedad de CBS - Prohibida Su Venta stamps on the rear sleeves upper right corners. Reissued in 1985 (see

orange/yellow ones, as well as the letters SG (most likely an abbreviation of the Spanish word segundo
[second]) in brackets added to the original catalog number on the rear sleeve. A rare mispressing exists with the
B-side playing an unidentified non-Springsteen song, although the label is correct.

Comments: Reissue with same packaging as the 1977 original, although a darker tone of green was used for the

typeface, sunburst label reissues can be most easily distinguished from originals by checking the small

1985 Springsteen show in Montpellier, France, which was eventually attended by more than 10,000 Spanish fans
crossing the nearby border (a fact that Bruce himself acknowledged during a speech that night), as their own
country had been mysteriously left off the European Born In The U.S.A. tour schedule.

Glory Days.

Comments: This 45 was originally sold together with the Born In The U.S.A. LP in Spain during the 1985
Christmas season. Very nice, glossy cardboard gatefold picture sleeve with song lyrics and 1985 tour dates on the
inside, and album discography/autograph reprint on rear. Curiously, the front sleeve highlights Janey Dont
You Lose Heart (misspelt Janie Dont You Lose Heart), with the actual A-side title in less prominent, smaller
print below. In addition to the postcards, an unknown number of copies also included a black-and-white promo
insert for Clarence Clemons second solo album on CBS, Hero. It is of note that a fake alternate (paper) picture
sleeve for this single, which was reported to have been printed in Spain as part of a series called 45 R.P.M. New
Design in 2002 (and containing a standard 1985 Dutch stock copy), appeared briefly on eBay during March 2004.

Janey Dont You Lose Heart/Im Goin Down (promotion-only release)
Comments: Odd Spain-only promo that had the regular commercial Im Goin Down single sides reversed. It is
of note that, presumably prompted by this release, Janey Dont You Lose Heart climbed to the #1 spot of the
Spanish national singles chart (which combined both radio airplay and physical record sales) for two weeks
during January 1986, whereas Im Goin Down didnt even make the Top 40 there. Color picture sleeve features
a totally different design/layout to the above cardboard gatefold stock version, and while clearly highlighting
Im Goin Down on front. Rear has song lyrics to Janey Dont You Lose Heart only, featuring a typo of You
got your buffet, baby with all your fears... in the opening line.

Comments: Picture sleeve features a distinctive cream/off-white printing tone (rather than the straight white
used in most other parts of the world). Misprinted copies exist with wrong A-side labels for the simultaneously
released single Escuchame by Spanish flamenco singer Manzanita.

Comments: Although several printed and online Springsteen discographies suggest that there may be UK white
label promo pressings for both this single and its follow-up, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, such copies do in fact
not exist, as CBS London apparently ceased to issue white labels altogether during 1975 and most of 1976. Two
different versions with notable typeface/layout variations on the labels (the most obvious being Bruces name
printed in one line on the first version and two lines on the second) are in circulation. Print ads for the record that
ran in the British music press clearly pointed out that this was the original version, since a cover of Born To
Run that ex-Hollies singer Allan Clarke had already cut in 1974 was also released by EMI as a UK single around
the same time as Springsteens recording.

Comments: Unusual and quite rare variant with 4-prong push-out center, enabling buyers to alter the center hole
size from small to large if needed. Although undocumented at the time of writing, other early UK Springsteen

Comments: On an interesting side note, the August 5, 1978 issue of British music paper New Musical Express

The Promised Land/Streets Of Fire (commercial release)
Comments: This release was originally exclusive to the UK (the only country in the world to issue not two, but
three singles off the Darkness On The Edge Of Town album), although a picture sleeve version was produced
by CBS Ireland five years later as part of their obscure, withdrawn Springsteen Pack containing four 7
reissues. Despite CBS London running half-page promo adverts for the single in the British music press, its sales
turned out beyond poorly, which is why stock pressings are a lot more difficult to locate now than white label
promos (although these are rare enough in their own right). A-side label features incorrect/incomplete song title
Promised Land.

used for CBS UKs 1979 Golden Decade 1967-1976 reissue series (which took in a total of 20 7 singles by
various artists and utilized a specific sleeve), while others saw separate distribution in the then-common CBS
London logo bags.

Comments: Withdrawn first picture sleeve variant with unique blue lettering used on both sides. While some
sources claim that this sleeve was a promotion-only item, it has in fact turned up on the collectors market with

Comments: Unreleased UK-only promotional pressing which featured Independence Day (instead of Be
True) on the B-side. As evidenced by a private, handwritten letter from late famous UK Capital Radio DJ and
major Springsteen fan/insider Roger Scott sent to Point Blank fanzine publisher Dan French in late January
1981 (which French published on the web in April 2010), the production of this 7 came about because CBS
London branch did not receive their master copy of Be True in time and hence decided to use another River
album track in its place. According to Chris Hunts discography in the Blinded By The Light book, no more
than around 100 copies were manufactured before the single in this particular form was scrapped (and replaced
with the standard pairing of Sherry Darling/Be True [see below]), while an unknown, yet definitely much
lower number of corresponding picture sleeves was printed up as well. In the early 1990s, Backstreet Records in
the US had a picture sleeve copy listed at an unbelievable $35 set sale (!) in one of their catalogues sent out to
subscribers of Backstreets magazine (another copy, minus sleeve, was auctioned off by them in the spring of
1997; this time with a minimum bid of $175 [the final bid is unknown]). About 15 years later, upon reading an
article on the Top 40 Worldwide Springsteen Rarities that appeared in the November 2006 issue of UK
magazine Record Collector and placed this item at the #1 spot, quoting a Mint-condition value of 2,000+, a
former CBS employee from the UK who had owned a copy for many years (but been previously unaware of its
immense rarity status) stepped up and provided high-resolution scans of his disc to the Springsteen collectors
website Lost In The Flood, along with an offer to sell it. Said copy was purchased during an official clearout
sale of records from the BBC Radio 1 archives (reportedly for very small change) and came with the common
second-run picture sleeve listing Be True on front. It is believed that no more than two original Independence
Day sleeves are in the hands of collectors today, while a super-rare, presumably unique uncut proof slick is also
known to exist. In late June 2008, another copy of the single (again accompanied by a Be True sleeve) surfaced
on eBay for the very first time and eventually sold for a relatively modest 1,270 (US $2,526.67), which was just
about half the amount paid for a Dutch Point Blank 45 offered simultaneously by the same seller. However,
eBay bids aside, this item remains what is without doubt the rarest of all worldwide Springsteen 7 pressings.

Sherry Darling/Be True (test pressing?)

Comments: Extremely rare issue which most likely is a test pressing. The disc carries unusual solid yellow CBS
Records labels with typewritten artist/song information and catalog number, as well as For Demonstration
Purposes Only imprints on either side. Although these labels do not specifically imply its origin, the matrix
numbers in the run-off grooves are identical to UK stock and white label promo pressings of the regular Sherry
Darling single.

Comments: Previously used S catalog number prefixes were omitted from this release onwards. On an
interesting side note, a CBS promo print ad for the single that was clearly based on the UK picture sleeve artwork

never available as either a domestic pressing or an import in Italy. In a review published in their February 21,
1981 edition, British music paper Melody Maker bashed the record for being forced, repetitive, [and] utterly

Springsteen album in March 1983 (which, of course, turned out to be nothing but wishful thinking on CBS part),

Comments: A little-known variant that had the original UK singles S prefix omitted from its catalog and matrix
numbers, and presumably was pressed during the period between the Nebraska and Born In The U.S.A.
albums. It is of note that the discs A-side and B-side labels have both the Bruce Springsteen lettering and
catalog number imprinted in respectively different font styles and sizes (it appears that this odd design was used
deliberately rather than in error, however, as the same layout can also be found on other CBS UK singles from
that era; e. g. Billy Joels An Innocent Man).

copies has discolored with age, usually taking on a mild bronze tone in the playing center area (a phenomenon
most likely due to a chemical reaction caused by the vinyl being too hot at the time it was pressed, which has also
affected two further Springsteen releases [see below] as well as shaped picture discs by several other
artists/labels made in the UK during the 1980s).

In the case of the Cover Me shape, the vinyl discoloration is known to have reached several different stages
over the years, from a mild bronze tone in the playing center area to a deep, ugly brown film covering the entire
face side. Again, uncut copies are known to exist. When fully assembled, the cardboard plinth kit forms a base
that enables the disc to stand up, making for a very nice display piece.

U.S. Bonds (used for most other internationally issued Cover Me 7/12 picture sleeves). No song titles are
mentioned on the front sleeve. It is of note that this reissue gave the single a successful re-entry in the UK charts,
peaking at #10 by late March 1985, whereas the original release only had made it to #24 in the previous fall.

Comments: Somewhat mysterious (and very rare) red label reissue lacking the original UK singles S catalog
number prefix, and presumably dating from 1986 or 1987. It is believed by some collectors that this pressing -
although not marked as such on its labels or sleeve - was a promotion-only release destined to keep Bruce in the
public ear between the Born In The U.S.A. and Tunnel Of Love albums (and possibly to push his back catalog
as well), while others speculate that it may have been specifically produced for potential inclusion in another UK
7 double pack that never materialized. Whatever its purpose was, it is safe to say that the single ultimately
didnt see any widespread distribution, which would explain why one collector was ready to pay 208 for a copy
in a May 2011 eBay auction.

Comments: Withdrawn for unknown reasons, although the recall may have had to do with copyright issues
regarding the use of Annie Leibovitz photo from the Born In The U.S.A. album artwork that was utilized for
this singles exclusive picture sleeve.

Comments: Two slightly different label types (either with or without LC 0149 logo imprints above the catalog
number on either side, as well as other minor variations) are circulating for this release. Also, the UK picture
sleeve exists in both laminated and unlaminated form. It is worth noting that War was among the very few
Springsteen singles that managed to garner positive reviews in the established British music press, with the New
Musical Express even going as far as calling it a truly GREAT record in their December 6, 1986 issue.

Comments: No doubt boosted by the 90-minute BBC Springsteen TV special Glory Days first aired in May 1987
(for which the Born To Run live video clip was originally assembled from 1985 tour footage before Bruces
camp decided to give it a general release), this single - despite being damned as a gluttonous money grab by the
New Musical Express - became a surprise Top 20 chart success in the UK, peaking at #16. Curiously, the bottom
left photo of Bruce on the front sleeve is mirror-inverted, while all other pictures are shown correctly (the same
printing error also appears on the Australian issue).

(which coupled cover versions of classic rock songs by contemporary artists on one side, and their respective
original recordings on the other), the disc features two-color custom picture labels and comes in a plain white die-
cut sleeve. Although never issued separately, individual standalone copies occasionally turn up on the market
as well.

Rocky Ground/The Promise (live)

Comments: Limited to 1,500 copies and made exclusively for distribution to European record stores participating
in the April 21, 2012 Record Store Day campaign. The B-sides live track was recorded at the Carousel House in
Asbury Park, New Jersey on December 7, 2010, and is otherwise unavailable in audio-only form. This single also
was pressed in the US to supply the North American markets (in obviously much larger quantities of a reported
8,000 units), but UK copies are fairly easy to distinguish by Made in the E.U. imprints found on both their rear
sleeves and labels.

Avenging Annie (by Andy Pratt)/Blinded By The Light (promotion/subscription-only release)

Comments: The first official 7 release featuring a Bruce Springsteen recording, predating his debut commercial
45 by more than a month. This single was issued exclusively as part of the Playback record subscription club
promotion, an interesting experimental project initiated by Columbia/Epic Records in the early 1970s as an
attempt to draw feedback from the US record-buying public on the labels newly-signed or lesser-known acts,
and thus fathoming what artists were potentially worthy of a more widespread promotional boost. Advertised
via the inner sleeves of various CBS albums at the time (including Bruces own Greetings From Asbury Park,
N.J.), the Playback club could be joined for a $3 fee, which covered the subscription of at least ten 7
singles/EPs featuring recently released (or, in some cases, even unreleased) tracks. These discs were shipped
with info booklets and specific questionnaires on the music contained, to be filled out and returned to the label by
the subscribers. Before Columbia eventually folded the project sometime in 1974, Bruce was featured on two more
Playback promos (see below), all of which are very hard to find in fully complete form; i. e. including the
booklets, questionnaires and outer mailing envelopes. It is of note that this release, as opposed to subsequent US
stock and promo issues of the regular single, contains the unedited 5:05 album version of Blinded By The Light.

Avenging Annie (by Andy Pratt)/Blinded By The Light (promotion-only release)

Comments: Odd and extremely rare white label variant of the above single presumably issued to radio stations,
featuring an alternate Playback logo design and different booklet depicting a black-and-white photo of Bruce
and the E Street Band on its cover, as well as an illustrated 2-page article entitled A Critics Look At Bruce
Springsteen inside. This version of the booklet, however, does not correspond with the January 1973 release of
the original blue label subscription 45, as the cover picture obviously dates from the August 1973 photo sessions
for Springsteens second album, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle, which is also mentioned in the
article. Interestingly, a standard blue label copy of the single combined with the alternate booklet appeared on
eBay in the spring of 2009.

Blinded By The Light/The Angel
Comments: The very first commercially available Bruce Springsteen 7 single, issued in the US only seven weeks
after Bruces debut album Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. had hit stores there (February 23, 1973), and
selling beyond poorly. Note that Blinded By The Light is an edited 3:58 version omitting three lines of the
penultimate verse and the entire final verse from the original LP track (whether this was done for length
considerations or due the fact that the last verse contains some potentially offensive lyrics is unknown).
Although genuine white label promos of Blinded By The Light were pressed and widely distributed in the
States (see below), Columbia also shipped an unknown number of regular stock copies to radio stations and
music journalists, which carried purple or white Promotional Record For Broadcast & Review - Not For Sale
stickers on either the A-side or B-side labels. Some of these featured the rare picture sleeve (see details below).

Blinded By The Light (Mono)/Blinded By The Light (Stereo) (promotion-only release)
Packaging: Die-cut black Columbia logo sleeve or unique color picture sleeve
Comments: Contains the same shortened version as the commercial release. An unknown, yet definitely very low
number of copies (reportedly no more than around 150) was shipped in a unique color picture sleeve used for
promotional purposes only (i. e., there were no [non-promo-stickered] stock copies ever issued with the picture
sleeve). This sleeve remains one of the most sought-after Springsteen collectables, as it is believed that about a
third of the 500 slicks originally printed up - many of which were never even assembled and presumably trashed
altogether sometime in the mid-1970s - have not survived to this day (furthermore, it can be assumed that a large
percentage of the sleeves that actually did make it out were quickly disposed of by radio station personnel upon
receiving the record, since they obviously had no use for them). It is of note that the abovementioned portions
edited out of the album version for the 7 release are also absent from the song lyrics imprinted on the rear sleeve.
Beware of modern-day reproductions that are normally in at least Near Mint condition, and (as opposed to
original copies, which were glued together quite sloppily) feature flawlessly sharp edges/corners as well.

Spirit In The Night/For You
Comments: Issued as the second US-only single from Bruces debut album in May 1973, this 45 appears to have
been ignored by the American record-buying public even more stubbornly than its predecessor, resulting in what
is considered one of the ultimate Holy Grails by Springsteen 7 vinyl collectors today (prices realized on eBay
in recent years ranged from $2,500 to $5,100; with no less than three copies surfacing there within the first four
months of 2008). However, on an interesting side note, US music magazine Rock listed Spirit In The Night as
the Number One Single of 1973 in their year-end review issue, making the following critical remarks: This was
released as a single, believe it or not. It didnt get anywhere at all. If you want to know whats wrong with American radio,

pressed and widely distributed in the States (see below), Columbia also shipped an unknown number of regular
stock copies to radio stations and music journalists, which carried purple Promotional Record For Broadcast &
Review - Not For Sale stickers on either the A-side or B-side labels. Rumour has it that Bruce himself owns not
just one, but two copies.

during Columbia Records A Week To Remember music festival held at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles,
California from April 29 to May 5, 1973. Springsteens Circus Song - an early version of what eventually would
become Wild Billys Circus Story (with partially different lyrics), taped on May 1 - is still exclusive to this EP in
audio-only form, although it was of course heavily bootlegged over the years (most notably on what is believed
to have been the very first Springsteen underground LP ever, The Jersey Devil on the Hoffman Avenue
Records label), and video footage of the complete song from the same performance eventually saw an official
release as part of the Born To Run 30th anniversary CD/DVD box set in late 2005. The accompanying booklet
featured a day-by-day rundown of the festival, including a short piece on Bruces appearance.

singles), its pretty safe to say that Columbia had distributed it in extremely limited quantities to begin with;
demonstrating how low the promotion of Springsteen and his then-current LP - only one cut from which was
used here - must have been on their priority list at the time. An unknown number of mislabelled copies exist with
the B-side (Rosalita) label originally attached to both sides, but subsequently overlaid with the correct one.

Comments: The first Springsteen single to make a dent in the US Billboard Hot 100 charts, peaking at #23 in
early November 1975; with nearly 200,000 copies sold domestically by late March 1976. Label layout variations
feature both small and larger type; the latter version being the less common of the two. Some stock copies are
circulating with black Demonstration Not For Sale rubber stamps added to their labels. It is of note that no less
than four different, uncut prototype black-and-white picture sleeve slicks for this single (with either variant
listing Meeting Across The River under its original working title of The Heist) have appeared at online

memorabilia expert Billy Smith and Bruces first manager, Mike Appel, who stated that he had no knowledge of

Comments: Extremely rare Germany-only release. This 45 is particularly notable for being the very first Bruce
Springsteen single ever issued outside the US (circa June 1975), in an obvious attempt to capitalize on the
domestic Top 30 chart success of The Hollies cover version released as Sandy earlier the same year. However,
Springsteens original recording practically didnt sell at all, which is why stock copies are so hard to find
today. Both the picture sleeve and A-side label feature an incorrect song title of Sandy (4th July, Asbury Park);
an error actually repeated from Polydors German pressing of the Hollies single. It is of note that in a few rare
instances, stock copies combined with CBS-Blitzinformation promo sleeves (see below) have turned up on the
collectors market, while high-quality reproductions of the original picture sleeve exist as well. The highest price

near as rare as the above commercial release. Again, the A-sides title is incorrectly listed as Sandy (4th July,
Asbury Park) on both the sleeve and label.

which can still be heard on the radio every day, Born To Run is an appropriate successor. Bruce Springsteen has figured out
the middle course of finding a common denominator for commerce and quality.

Comments: In addition to the usual hype (this time mostly related to Bruces November 1975 mini-tour of
Europe), the German sleeve text proposed a likely Springsteen live appearance in Germany in 1976 which, of
course, never happened (although, as recently revealed by Peter Ames Carlins excellent Springsteen biography
Bruce, a full-scale European tour during the first half of 1976 had actually been in the planning stages at that
time).

even here by now, comes through with the second single taken from his sensational LP Born To Run. Springsteen, who
recently gave his European debut in a blaze of glory on stages in London, Amsterdam and Stockholm, is likely to come to

Comments: Other than the three earlier CBS-Blitzinformation issues, this one featured the standard picture
sleeve artwork (as found on the commercial pressing) on front, and the German promo text on an orange/yellow
(sunburst) background with yellow thunderbolt logo on rear. The label design, however, remained unchanged.
An undefined number of copies are also known to circulate in die-cut red/white CBS walking eye logo sleeves
that feature German-language trademark info.
Blitzinformation text translation: It is only now that Bruce Springsteens unique meaning for 70s rock can be
estimated. In 1975, the singer and songwriter was the top sensation in the USA. By now, his lyrics, especially those from the
Born To Run LP, are part of American school education. With the exception of Bob Dylan, no other rock musician has
achieved this. After an almost three-year absence from the rock scene, Springsteen has managed to sell a million copies of his
LP Darkness On The Edge Of Town within four weeks. His major US tour is sold out, with fans demanding - and getting -
up to eight encores, making every show last about three hours. This single was taken from the LP.

Blitzinformation series.

Sherry Darling/Be True
Comments: The rarest of all European commercial pressings of this 45. Front sleeve artwork is widely similar to
the more common issue from Holland (where all picture sleeves used for German Springsteen singles were
printed from this release onwards), but distinguishes itself by mentioning the previously unreleased non-LP B-
side Be True on front. Rear design is completely different, featuring lyrics to both songs. Some copies in
circulation have small punch holes in their sleeves upper-right areas, presumably marking them as bargain bin
items.

The River/Independence Day
Packaging: Full-color picture sleeve or orange/white die-cut Musik Der Welt CBS logo sleeve
Comments: Picture sleeve artwork is widely similar to the more common Dutch issue.

Comments: As was the case with domestic Dutch issues, two different picture sleeves exist for this single on the
German market as well, featuring notable size and typeface variations in the Johnny Bye Bye title lettering on
front.

Comments: The final Springsteen 7 pressed domestically in Germany; all subsequent singles were imported
from Holland.

(FORMER) YUGOSLAVIA
Catalog number: CBS/SUZY 6424
Comments: The only Springsteen 45 ever released in ex-Yugoslavia, issued by official CBS licensee Suzy
Records, who also manufactured and distributed several of Bruces albums domestically on both vinyl and
cassette. Front sleeve artwork is widely identical to the more common Italian pressing. An extremely rare
misprinted version exists with a wrong B-side label for the Johnnie Taylor disco song Keep On Dancing and
different catalog number (CBS 6470), although the disc does in fact play Springsteens Factory as it should. The
Johnnie Taylor single that Prove It All Night got mixed up with here was Hey Mister Melody Maker, also
released in 1978.

QUESTIONABLE ITEMS

Two Hearts/Ramrod (promotion-only release?)
Reported country of origin: UK
Reported year of release: 1981 (allegedly unreleased)
Comments: This promo was never before heard-of and totally undocumented until early December 2008, when,
all of the sudden and as if by miracle, a dead-mint condition copy surfaced on eBay UK (where it eventually sold
for 310/$460), although one Italian collector has claimed to have purchased a copy as early as 1992. While its
catalog number certainly would fit in with the coding system used by CBS during 1981, it appears odd that both
the preceding and subsequent numbers were assigned to commercially issued picture sleeve singles made in the
Netherlands (The Nits Red Tape [CBS A 1844] and Julio Iglesias Begin The Beguine [Volver A Empezar]
[CBS A 1846], respectively). Also taking into account that numerous fake vinyl items turned up on the market
over the course of 2008, as well as the fact that several major international Springsteen collectors had been
completely unaware of its existence prior to the eBay auction, this items authenticity remains very much in
doubt.

Atlantic City/Mansion On The Hill (promotion-only release?)

Reported country of origin: Venezuela
Reported year of release: 1982
Packaging: Die-cut orange/white CBS walking eye promo sleeve and stamped orange title insert
Label info: White CBS Promocional paper promo labels; large center hole
Comments: Another previously unknown promo 45 (allegedly manufactured in Caracas) that turned up on
eBay for the very first (and only) time in mid-April 2010, ultimately changing hands for a whopping $799/598.
Both labels carry large red CBS Promocional Prohibida Su Venta rubber stamps, while the insert has a circular
stamp reading CBS Control De Calidad Aprobado (Spanish for CBS quality control passed) as well as the
number 161 stamped on the back.

Cover Me/Jersey Girl (live) (promotion-only release?)
Reported country of origin: Venezuela
Label info: White CBS paper promo labels; large center hole
Comments: The most recent Venezuelan promo issue to appear on eBay at the time of writing (just before
Christmas 2011), and packaged in a similar fashion to the abovementioned Atlantic City 7 (which, oddly,
carries a higher catalog number, although it would of course have been released almost two years prior to the
Cover Me single). Again, the insert features two different rubber stamps (CBS Control De Calidad Aprobado
logo and the number 135) on its back, while both the front insert and labels have an additional CBS logo
imprint not present on the Atlantic City insert or disc. Red promo stamp on both labels reads, CBS/Columbia,
C.A., Promocional. The item eventually sold for a final bid of $776/596.

Tunnel Of Love/Two For The Road (promotion-only release?)

Label info: White CBS Promocional paper promo labels; large center hole
Comments: Executed similarly to the above promos of Atlantic City and Cover Me, but this was in fact the
first of the three Venezuelan Springsteen issues to surface on eBay (September 2009), fetching a final bid of
$787/538. Both labels again feature large red CBS Promocional Prohibida Su Venta rubber stamps, while the
insert carries a circular stamp reading CBS Control De Calidad Aprobado in the lower right corner. The discs
run-off grooves have machine-stamped matrix codes of CBS 224 (on both sides), 01 651295 1A 1 (A-side) and
01 651295 1B 1 (B-side), as well as the words Disco Promocional Matriz Importada (Promotional disc,
imported copy) etched into the vinyl by hand. It is of note that upon extensive internet researches by several
collectors, only two other Venezuelan CBS promo 45s similar to the three Springsteen releases listed here (both by
Pink Floyd) could be turned up, which certainly has raised some questions about their authenticity.

PROVEN FAKES

Format: 45 rpm gold vinyl single
Country of origin: Japan
Comments: Obscure Japanese gold metal acetate fake/bootleg of the official 1981 two-sided white label US
Stereo/Stereo promotional 7 (COL AE7 1332), housed inside a cheap black-and-white photocopy of the original
promo picture sleeve. Reportedly, only 10 copies were made.

The Boss EP: Thunder Road/You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)/Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
Reported country of origin: Argentina
Actual country of origin: Ireland
Comments: Cleverly designed to look like an official Argentine promo-only EP, and occasionally still sold as
such until this day. When first surfacing during the height of the worldwide Springsteen hype in 1985, copies of
this (allegedly withdrawn) release - bearing the catalogue number CBS 23.354 and featuring a superb, totally
unique full-colour picture sleeve - were originally available exclusively through dealers in the UK, which
prompted a handful of skeptical collectors to do a little more research on the item. After the Argentine branch of
CBS denied to ever have pressed such an EP, it eventually came to light that the record actually had been
manufactured by three enterprising bootleggers at an Irish pressing plant in a quantity of 5,000 copies. Even
white label sample discs (with handwritten catalog numbers) were produced and appear on the market from
time to time in what look like authentic die-cut CBS Argentina logo sleeves. It should be noted that, while of
course being fully aware of its bogus nature, most collectors still hold on to their copies due to the generally
great production quality and striking sleeve artwork.

FAKE PICTURE SLEEVES

In addition to the examples already mentioned within their respective individual discography entries, several
more fake Springsteen 7 picture sleeves have surfaced on the collectors market recently. First off, a series of no
less than eight different fakes - for Hungry Heart, Cover Me, Im On Fire, Glory Days, Im Goin
Down, War, Brilliant Disguise and Human Touch - were sold by a dealer from Germany at Dutch record
fairs in both 2011 and 2012 for 5 apiece. Containing standard, genuine Dutch-pressed discs, these feature totally
different artwork to their original counterparts (in most cases utilizing photos from non-corresponding eras; e. g.,
a 1975 Eric Meola Born To Run outtake shot for 1980s Hungry Heart release) and are highlighting the
respective B-side tracks over the actual A-sides (it remains unclear exactly when and where they were printed, or
if there are further titles in existence). Another batch of custom-made reissue sleeves started to appear on eBay
in the late summer of 2012; including a new replica of the rare US Blinded By The Light promo sleeve as well
as what can only be described as pure fantasy artwork for other early American releases such as the stock issue
of Spirit In The Night, the 1974 3-track promo EP, Born To Run, Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out, Prove It All
Night and Badlands (none of which, of course, had ever been originally issued with a picture sleeve to begin
with) - inexplicably, some people were ready to actually shell out up to $49.99 for these duds.

INTERVIEW PICTURE DISCS

Considering the fact that an artist's spoken word is not protected by international copyright laws, interview picture discs -
most of which seem to originate in the UK - cant really be deemed illegal, although they're very certainly unofficial.
Usually pressed as limited editions of around 5,000 copies each, several Springsteen releases of that kind were issued on
vinyl throughout the second half of the 1980s (and later on on CD as well), including a trio of 7 singles and one shaped disc
that are listed here for reference. In general, these interview recordings are of rather poor sound quality, hardly something
that even the most dedicated Springsteen fan would listen to more often than once, and the records themselves dont have any
real collectors value to speak of either.
