FROM THE DESK OF THE SUPERINTENDENT
Dear Community Members:
This newsletter will focus on a very important current issue and that is H1N1 swine
flu.
First, I would like to inform everyone that as of November 2, we have no confirmed
cases of H1N1. Secondly, we have been in continued contact with the Allegany County
Health Department and they concur that there have not been any confirmed H1N1 cases.
They also have reassured us that we are following the proper procedures in dealing with
any flu viruses. As a health organization, they concur that closing school will not change
anything. The virus is very fast moving and if a student is in school a couple of days
before the symptoms appear it is already too late to do anything.
We here at school are taking extra measures to try and eliminate the spread of any
virus by doing extra cleaning in classrooms, cleaning computer keyboards, and
disinfecting all areas student use frequently which also includes our buses.
Most importantly parents should encourage their children to wash their hands, keep
hands away from their mouth and eyes, and if your child does not feel well, keep them
home. I understand that some students do not like to miss school and sometimes it is
difficult to keep your child home when both parents work, but sending them to school and
then having the nurse send them home does not help reduce the spread of any virus.
Also, remember that if a child does not go to school or is sent home they should not
be allowed to participate in community activities later on that day because they feel
better. As adults, we know that after being sick, you tend to feel better as the day goes on
but you have not completely recovered. I know the common practice is if you do not have
a fever for 24 hours it is OK to return to school. I guess my personal feeling is that you
should take a couple of days off to make sure you have completely recovered. I think for
the next several months, we will be experiencing high numbers of students absent from
school and the number may increase once the seasonal flu season begins. But closing
school will not correct the problem. What will help is what is recommended by all health
care agencies–washing hands frequently, get rest, and stay home when you are sick.
We will continue to communicate with the Health Department and hope we will be
able to have the H1N1 vaccine dispensed to our students but at the present time neither
the seasonal or H1N1 vaccine are available to us. Please rest assured that we take the
health and safety of all our students and staff very seriously and we will do whatever is
proper and recommended by the CDC and the Health Dept. along with making sure the
schools are a safe place to be.
I understand that the Allegany County Health Department will be giving out both the
seasonal flu and H1N1 flu shots on November 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Allegany
County Health Department. They have a limited supply of both vaccines.
On another note of interest, we have received word from the Governor’s office that
he is proposing mid-year cuts. What does this mean for our district? If the cuts are
approved by the legislators as presented by the Governor, our district will lose
$260,000.00 mid year. That is the current budget that was approved back in May 2009
that will be reduced by $260,000.00 less from state aid. This is money that has already
been budgeted for our 2009-2010 expenses.
If the Governor’s proposal does pass, we may have to make mid-year cuts to reduce
our cost by $260,000.00. We are currently reviewing our total budget and I have asked
all supervisors to begin looking for areas that may be reduced or cut to reduce our
current budget by $260,000.00.
We will be monitoring this situation until final notice is given, but we are taking
proactive action to make sure education programming is not reduced.
As we have always done and will continue to do, we will watch our spending and
make the necessary adjustments to try and proactively deal with any foreseen and
unforeseen financial concerns.
We will begin the development of our 2010-2011 school budget proposal and would
take any concerns and ideas you may have for us to consider when we put our budget
together. I am asking any community member who has ideas and would like to share
them with us to give me a call here at school 585-928-2561.
On December 17, at 12:45 p.m., we have scheduled our Annual Senior Citizen
Luncheon at the elementary building in Richburg. We all look forward to meeting and
greeting all who attend. As usual we will have a great lunch and good entertainment. See
you on the 17th of December and remember if you know of anyone who cannot attend,
but would like us to deliver a meal, please call Connie Emery at 928-2561 ext. 3251, and
we will be glad to deliver you a meal.
That time of year is fast approaching when we will soon be seeing the ground
covered in snow. I know we all dread those cold nights and snowy mornings, but I guess
we live in an area of the country where this is an annual occurrence.
With that thought in mind, I would like to remind everyone that if we need to close
school due to inclement weather or the safety of our students, we will notify the radio and
TV stations as soon as possible, which is usually before 6 AM. If the weather looks like it
could be bad, please listen or watch one of the stations listed below.

November is one of our busiest months of the year and one of the shortest for the
number of school days. When you take out parent/teacher conference and Thanksgiving
recess and Veterans’ Day, there are only 16 school days where students are in their
classrooms with their teachers. That brings me to an important topic, parent/teacher
conferences. By the time you receive this newsletter, we would have already had the
parent/teacher conference. If you were unable to attend, you can still schedule a
meeting. It is very important that as parents you keep up-to-date with your child’s
progress in school. We have just reached the first marking period and if your child’s
report card is showing that he or she is having some academic difficulty; I strongly
recommend you schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher(s). Our staff is
dedicated to help all our students achieve academic success, and they are willing to
schedule individual parent meetings when you are able to meet with them. Please do not
wait until it is too late and then try to make huge changes. Now is the time to react to any
problems your child may be having in school. For those parents who were able to attend
the parent/teacher conference, thank you for your continued support of your child’s
academic success. We appreciate your support, but more importantly your child
appreciates your support and needs it as they continue through our educational system.

ELEMENTARY NEWS

As you read this, it is hard to believe, but we are already half-way through the month
of November. This month always seems to go so fast with parent/teacher conferences,
Veteran’s Day, and of course, Thanksgiving recess which begins November 25th-29th.
The month of November also marks the beginning of our state testing. On
November 16th and 17th all of our fifth grade students will be taking the NYS Social
Studies Test. It is very important for your fifth grade child to be in school the days of
testing, as the test is difficult to make up given the time it takes to complete the test.
I would like to thank the many parents who were able to attend parent/teacher
conferences. Being able to talk with your child’s teacher(s) is a valuable part of your
child’s education. I encourage you to keep the lines of communication open between you
and your child’s teacher(s) to ensure your child’s success.
Our elementary teachers have been involved with The Thoughtful Classroom and
Literacy Strategies. These are not new programs for the teachers, but they do provide
the teachers with new strategies for teaching material to their students especially in the
areas of reading and writing.
I have been so pleased with the majority of the students’ behavior in school thus far
and their behavior is a reflection of you, the parents. So to all of you, I say THANK
YOU!!!

The Importance of Participation in Extra-Curricular Activities
It is estimated that a child spends approximately 60% of their waking hours outside
of the regular school day. What a child does during this time frame can have a significant
impact upon their development and maturation.
After school extra-curricular activities have long been credited for helping students
have a more well rounded, beneficial and meaningful school experience. Some of the
benefits associated with participation in extra-curricular activities include improved social
skills, enhanced academic performance, leadership skills, and a greater sense of
responsibility and self-discipline. Furthermore, extra-curricular activities can provide a
student with a personal sense of belonging to the school, instilling feelings of
accomplishment, self-worth and higher levels of self-esteem.
The Bolivar-Richburg Central School District recognizes the many benefits of extra-
curricular activities and provides numerous opportunities for student participation in
these types of activities. Within the middle and high school alone, we have extra-
curricular activities in the areas of athletics, academics, community service and the arts.
In an effort to help our students maximize their school experience, the district
remains committed to the staffing and funding of these vital extra-curricular activities. In
an effort to make it possible for all of our students to benefit from these opportunities, we
provide multiple transportation times, so that students can participate in these activities,
while at the same time lessoning the burden of transportation on the parents.

curricular participation, I hope that you will encourage your child to take advantage of
and participate in one or more of the many extra-curricular opportunities offered by this

SPANISH NEWS...
Spanish 8 worked on newsletters with information about Day of the Dead. They
learned that Mexicans view death as a natural part of life and use Day of the Dead to
remember loved ones who have passed away. They will be learning how to describe
themselves and talk about weather.
Spanish I students are back into the groove reviewing verbs while learning new
vocabulary for personality. They will soon be learning words for food and describing
healthy choice in Spanish.
Spanish II students are talking about things to do in an amusement park while
reviewing stem-changing verbs. They know how to compare things and are learning
how to use those trick object pronouns.
Spanish III students are continuing to look forward to the Regents exam while
learning about entertainment vocabulary. We will be doing lots of practice with the
preterit.
Spanish IV students are writing a children’s story about the Brave Bear.
Spanish V students are discussing information about immigration and related
vocabulary. They are reviewing the imperfect and the preterit.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD GETS THE FLU
Despite all the handwashing and mouth covering you’ve told your children to do,
sometimes they still get the flu. Their body aches, they have a horrible headache, and
the cough makes your chest hurt just to hear it. So now what do you do?
First, you should practice social isolation. That means keeping your sick child home,
away from others that could pick up the virus. Your child should not attend Scouts, sports
practices, church, or school until they are feeling better. Social isolation helps prevent
the spread of the flu. Keep the child home until he or she has not had a temperature for
at least 24 hours without Tylenol or ibuprofen.
Allow your child to rest as much as possible. Illness is very energy-consuming, and
the body needs rest to fully recover. If they restart activity too quickly, they may have a
relapse that is harder to recover from completely. Chronic health conditions such as
asthma or diabetes may get worse.
Encourage children to drink plenty of fluids to help cool the body and prevent
dehydration. If they are vomiting or otherwise unable to take in fluids, watch for
dehydration (decrease in urine output, dry mucous membranes, fast heart rate,
dizziness). IV fluids may become necessary in extreme cases.
You may want to call your healthcare provider to see what they recommend. Unless
your child has a chronic health problem, however, they may suggest that you just keep
the child home and provide fluids and rest. Remember, they are seeing many patients
who have serious complications from the flu.
Keep yourself calm. Most of us have had the flu before, and while it may have been
unpleasant, we have made it through. Being panicky wastes energy and makes other
people panicky too. This creates more of a burden on the healthcare system which is
already busy when there is a flu outbreak.

B-RCS SCHOLARSHIP LIST NOW AVAILABLE

At their conference this fall, Mr. DiGirolamo announced to seniors B-R’s list of
scholarships for them to use in their search for financial help for college. Information
about applying for these scholarships is explained on the scholarship list. This list is on
our school web site on the Guidance page under “useful links”
Mr. “D” will announce to students when each scholarship application is available as
well as the deadlines. Students are responsible for meeting the criteria and deadlines.

JANUARY REGENTS EXAMS SCHEDULED

The State has set January 26-29, 2009, as the January Regents exam period for
this school year. Students wishing to re-take a Regents exam in January have been told
to sign up at once in the guidance office. A schedule of the exams is posted outside the
Guidance Office, listing the date and time for each exam. There is no charge for taking a
January Regents exam. For more information, call Mr. DiGirolamo at 928-2561.

JUNIORS TAKE PSAT
On October 14th, many juniors and some sophomores took the Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) as a “warm-up” for the SAT they take next spring. The
PSAT allows students to get a feel for the kind of questions that will appear on the SAT.
In addition, it enters juniors into scholarship competition through the National Merit
Scholarship Corporation. Also, it compares scores of our students to students from all
around the country, giving students a sense of where they stand in their college
preparation.
Results from the PSAT will be returned to B-RCS in early December. At that time,
Mr. DiGirolamo will review and interpret the results to those students who took the test.
Rick Ratzel, Andrew Ray, Samantha Robinson, Kaitlyn Gordon, Greg Milbrand,
Claire Updyke, Shelby Bello, Myriah Tavano, Kevin Morsman, worked with a Sam Walton
Fellow, Diana Maguire. The students presented a Business Plan that will offer school
spirit products to the Bolivar-Richburg Community and School. The products chosen by
the students will be unique to the community. The students named their business the
Bolivar Investors.
Ms. Maguire was very impressed with the Bolivar Investors plan and will continue to
work with these students to develop a sound business plan that will lead to success.
The Bolivar Investors would like to thank Mr. DeCerbo and Mr. Marshall for the
opportunity to attend the SIFE Competition.

FIRST GRADE
Mrs. Allen, Mr. Bogey, Mrs. McClellan, Mrs. Scott.......
October has been a busy month for the first grades. We had a week of activities
centered around Fire Prevention. We drew posters to show what we learned about fire
dangers and how to stay safe. We enjoyed a visit from the Richburg Fire Department. It
was fun to meet Smokey the Bear. We enjoyed the pencils, rulers, and coloring books
they gave us. Thanks to the Richburg Fire Department for all they did for us! We really
appreciate it. Be sure to remember to change the batteries in your smoke detector.
This month we have been reading and listening to many exciting stories about
animals. We are learning about their habitats and how people and animals are important
to one another. We made different habitat dioramas as a culminating activity. The
children have done well sounding and blending their words this month. We appreciate all
the support from the parents while we practice our reading.
We have been practicing some reading strategies from the Thoughtful Classroom
as well. We are doing Kindling each Monday. This reminds us that good thinking is slow.
It helps us think before we raise our hands. We have used the Fist List to help us
organize our thoughts before writing. Finally, we are thinking about each child’s learning
style. We love to do task rotations so we can do a task in our favorite style and stretch
ourselves by trying another activity outside of our learning style. It is fun and is helping
us become better learners.
In math we have been adding and subtracting. The children are using different
strategies for solving word problems. We are building our math vocabulary also.
For Halloween, we had many fun activities planned. We even did a task rotation on
spiders for part of the Halloween festivities. We did crafts, cooperative groups, used the
computers, and reinforced our daily skills using Halloween as a theme. We donned our
costumes and had a little parade at the school. We certainly had fun. Thanks to all the
parents who helped with our Halloween parties.

SECOND GRADE

October was a busy month! Second graders learned about seeing-eye dogs,
rescue dogs, dogs that help those who are deaf, and therapy monkeys. We studied ants
and other insects. We even worked on a “play” in our reading book. We have also been
learning a lot about baseball. Reading takes us to different topics and sometimes to
different countries. Thank you for reading WITH your child!
Math class has us memorizing math facts and counting by twos, threes, fives, and
tens. We are using math terms like “expanded form” and “digits”. We are also getting
much experience with Word Problems. It is helpful for you to look over your child’s
papers and see if there is difficulty in a certain area.
We will be sharing about the things we are thankful for. “We are thankful for our
family,” is always one of the first sentences we hear. Thanks for being involved in the life
of your child. We look forward to meeting all of you at Parent Teacher Conferences.

facts. They should have some form of work to do each night....spelling math, etc.
CONGRATS to Hannah Clark for being the student of the month in Ms. Miles’
classroom! Hannah loves to read Magic Tree House books, and she hopes to be a
teacher when she grows up. Happy birthday to Rhiannon Peck who celebrated her
birthday on Nov. 3rd! We are working hard on our writing skills and wrote some great
stories about Halloween creatures last month! We have read some inspiring true stories
to lead us into writing, and the students have learned to make good schematic
connections to each story. Study your math facts each night, and remember to review for
Friday Reading and spelling tests!
Mr. Smith’s class is working on addition and subtraction of larger numbers. They
are also reading some wonderful stories in reading class! The children write in their
journals daily and they are studying the differences between common and proper nouns
in language. Maya Graves is the student of the month....way to go Maya!

Happy November everyone. Before we know it Thanksgiving will be here, along
with the snow, and with it, the urge to stay inside snuggled up with a blanket and a cup of
hot cocoa. How marvelous that does sound.
October was a busy month for all of us here in Ms. Harmon’s room. The students

celebrated my birthday with me, and thanks to Mrs. Rockefeller, we had cupcakes to
make it a perfect day for me. Thank you, Mrs. Rockefeller. The students have learned
many new things this past month; multiple digit multiplication, measurement, and those
old favorites, vocabulary words, just to name a few. The end of the month had us
celebrating Halloween. There were three witches, one princess, and one ninja prancing
around the room. We had a great time, starting with breakfast, compliments of Ms.
Harmon, and juice, etc. It was my very first Halloween celebration as an elementary
school teacher, and I had a blast. I look forward to so many more celebrations with my
wonderful students. November will find us learning about the Pilgrims and their trek to
the new world for freedom from oppression. It is and will be a great time to be thankful
for what we have in life. Every day, we should be thankful for what we have.
October’s student of the month is Elizabeth Hitchcock. Beth is a wonderful young
lady who goes out of her way every day to help others. Regardless what she is doing, if

FOURTH GRADE
Mrs. Perry, Mr. Conklin, Mr. Pruch......
Another month has come and gone. Here in 4th
grade, we have accomplished so much! The 4th graders
are working so hard in all of their classes.
In social studies we have finished our unit on the
Native Americans. Many of the projects are coming in and,
by parent/teacher conferences, they should all be out in
hall by my room for your viewing pleasure. Thank you so
much for your help with the many wonderful projects.
We have begun our unit on explorers and have a small project we will do
in class. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at conference time.
Congratulations to Tessalyn Zelko for being named student of the month for my
homeroom!
In math, we’ve been learning how to make change. This can be so tricky. The
students are also practicing their addition and subtraction strategies within word
problems that involve money, as well. It looks like we’ll be making a connection between
dollars and cents with the tenths and hundredths columns on the place value chart.
Mrs. Perry’s student of the month was Audrey Dudley. Audrey is always ready to
lend a helping hand. She is a hard-working student! Way to go, Audrey!
We’ve read some great selections in our reading series this month. One of the
pieces in our reading books was a play. The students enjoyed playing the different parts
as we read together in class.
In science we have been learning about properties of matter. At home, we’ve had a
choice of ten activities to try to increase our understanding of different concepts. We’ve
also had another Study Island Topic to look into. Next up for us is Simple Machines/
Force and Motion.
Mr. Pruch’s student of the month was Gabriella Chudy, a friendly, helpful, hard-
working and kind young lady! Nice job, Gabby!
FIFTH GRADE
Mrs. Cawley, Miss Weitzel, Mr. Lounsberry....
In social studies Mr. Lounsberry’s classes are studying about four major cultural
groups of North American Native Americans. Much of what we learned about the Eastern
Woodlands Indians accompanied what the students studied in fourth grade. The classes
were all able to relate to this group of Indians since we live in the same environment as
these people.
For two weeks we have been preparing for the New York State Grade 5 Social
Studies test that will be given on November 16-17. We prepared by practicing on
questions from several old tests. We also had New York State trivia and geography
contests. In addition we worked on writing Document-Based Questions (DBQ’s), which
are a major component of the state test. This is a new challenge for many fifth-graders.
The fifth grade science classes wrapped up their unit on rocks and minerals. They
are now starting one on electromagnetism. Everyone is looking forward to making a
buzzer and a motor. Some students are also signing up to take an extra credit workshop
after school on the internal combustion engine. Mr. Borer and Mr. Majot from Dresser-
Rand will be coming in to do this fun-filled learning experience at the end of November
and beginning of December.
Ms. Weitzel’s math classes have been working on multiplication and division.
Please have your child practice their multiplication tables, as this
will greatly help them.

If you would like to help your child become a more fluent reader, please read this:
In only 10 -15 minutes a day, you can help your child become a better reader.
Step 1 - Choose a short story, passage, or poem to read together.
Step 2 - Have your child read a couple of sentences to you. Jot down any words
that your child has difficulty with, to review later.
Step 3 - Take turns reading sentences or paragraphs to each other.
Step 4 - Continue reading the same text everyday until the child can read it
fluently and independently.
Step 5 - Keep it fun and praise your child for good effort! With consistency, you
will see gains!
Strategies for decoding bigger words: Encourage your child to look for little words that
are hidden inside the bigger word. Break the word into smaller pieces (syllables). Do not
let him/her look at the first letter and then make a guess. Have your child look at the
whole word and read the parts that he/she does recognize before blending the parts

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors awarded to
NOVEMBER 10, 2009
a high school student. As part of the by-laws of the National Honor Society Constitution,
each school district is required to publish its selection procedures. Bolivar-Richburg’s
selection procedures are as follows:
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP PROCEDURES
Each high school teacher receives a list of juniors and seniors who have met the
scholastic eligibility requirement of 85%. This score reflects the student’s cumulative
high school average through the midpoint of the current school year. The teachers will
evaluate students on the three other criteria necessary for selection: leadership, service

and character. Teachers will only evaluate students with whom they have had direct
contact.
During this process, each scholastically eligible student receives and completes a
Student Activity Information Sheet. On it, students list their activities and extracurricular
information for the Faculty Council to review. The Faculty Council is a committee
consisting of five high school teachers and is annually appointed by the principal. The
principal and NHS advisor are non-voting members of the council. This body reviews
each student’s activity form as well as the faculty recommendations. Candidates
receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council are inducted into our NHS chapter.
Some of the guidelines used in judging a student’s leadership, service and
character are:

WRAP-UP FOR 2009
Coach Emery and the entire Girls Soccer program would like to thank
everyone again for their continued support this season. The Girls
Varsity Soccer team topped off their season by winning their fourth
straight Allegany County Division I Championship! “I thoroughly
enjoyed working with this group,” stated coach Emery...”Their parents, our school district,
and in fact, our entire community has a lot to be proud of with these girls. They have
demonstrated the utmost in sportsmanship and class in the way they have conducted
themselves, win or lose, throughout the season. I also can’t say enough about how
impressed I was with their cohesiveness. They just seemed to get along with each other
so well... it made them fun to coach.”
Although the Wolverines were eliminated by a shoot-out in the quarter final round of
Sectionals last week, coach Emery still indicated...
“We played so well this year, with so much heart, and such determination... as a
friend told me recently, we really can’t define ourselves by one ‘shoot out’ lack of
advancement... I think over the past five years we have been one of the better teams in
the county and in our Sectional Division and we should all be happy about that! Thanks
to our coaches...Mrs. Margeson at the Modified level, and Ms. Henneman at the JV
level... and the parents and community members that are active in our community youth
soccer programs, our whole soccer program has evolved and improved over the years!
If you’re a soccer fan within our district, you have to be excited about what you have

NEWS FROM THE CAREERS AND FINANCIAL
MANAGEMENT CLASS
American teenagers spent $179 billion of their own money in 2006, an average of
more than $107 per week, per teenager.
Teens have a direct influence on the household spending by parents and caregivers.
Yet most teenagers lack the skills and knowledge to evaluate risks and opportunities
when making purchasing decisions.
With this in mind the National Consumers League provides a Life Smarts consumer
education program. This program is free to all teenagers grades 9-12.
The Careers and Financial Management class joined this competition in October on
the Varsity Level. The students are learning about Personal Finance, Health and Safety,
Environment, Technology, and Consumer Rights and Responsibilities.
The students take practice quizzes, study financial, health, environmental and
technology data bases on-line. The students then take a test to compete against other
students nationwide.
The students have had a great time questioning each other, debating questions,
sharing information and finding websites that offer a wide range of information.
The Career and Financial Management Class would like to thank Mr. DeCerbo and
Mr. Marshall for giving them the opportunity to enter the Life Smarts competition.
BLOOD DRIVE
The Business Honor Society of New York and The Business Ownership and
Marketing Class would like to thank everyone who assisted with promoting and
organizing the Community Bank Blood drive that was to be held on October 29.

October has been a busy month in the Secondary Library
Media Center. Mr. Baldwin’s Advanced Placement History
class was in the Library twice researching famous
Revolutionary Americans and how the Constitution improved
the Articles of Confederation, Mr. Thornton’s Environmental
Science class chose books for their 1st quarter book reports,
Mr. Allen’s 6th Grade Social Studies class began working on
their Geopedia project by using the Almanacs to locate
countries by continent, Mrs. Walker’s Spanish IV class used
the computers in the LMC to find information for their virtual
field trip, Mr. Peck’s Sports Journalism class was in the Library
three times in the month to find information for their own “Shaq V...” Show also to find
sports current events and to begin researching the World Series, Mr. Gibbon’s Earth
Science classes used the magazine databases to find articles on recent earthquakes,
volcanoes and tsunamis, Mrs. Cady’s Business Ownership and Marketing class began
researching American Tycoons of the late 19th and early 20th century, Mrs. Lasnick’s
8th grade Spanish classes were investigating the Hispanic holiday “The Day of the
Dead” and how it compares and contrasts to our Halloween and many of Mrs.
Donahue’s English students were in to get a second book for their individual reading.
Please remind your students to check the due date in the back of their library book and
renew them if they are not finished.
EARTH SCIENCE
In Earth Science we have completed our unit on rocks and minerals. We now
turn our attention to the forces at work inside the Earth. This includes earthquakes
and volcanoes as well as the Plate Tectonic Theory. After that we will focus on the
activity that occurs on the Earth’s surface which will include weathering and
erosion.
It is important that students keep up with the class work as well as lab and lab
reporting. This is especially true if they are absent. It is difficult to catch up if one
gets too far behind. Please encourage your kids to use advisement to get help
and to make up any activities that may have been missed due to absences.
The darker days of autumn and soon winter are upon us and the holiday season
and winter sports season will start soon. Budgeting time will be more important
than ever. Hopefully studying will be included during these busy days. Studying
and homework are such an important part of the education process. If we all work
together I hope that we can get our students to do both and as a result, do the very
best that they can in all of their academic classes.

have been working hard making music and preparing for the concert. These section

We have been working very hard in kindergarten this past month. The students
have been learning a lot in reading. We have started to blend sounds to make words.
The students are starting to sound out simple words in their reading books. They are
doing well. Keep up the good work! We have also been working on compare and
contrast, main idea, and setting. We have started learning about animals in our reading
series. For the month of November, we will complete the unit “Animals Live Here.”
Students will learn about: ocean environments, desert animals, orange groves,
grasslands, and what animals do in the winter. We will read the stories: Life In An
Ocean, ABC’s Under The Sea, Oceans, Armadillo’s Orange, Desert Life, Animal Babies
In the Grasslands, Bear Snores On, Bears, The Winter Storm, A Bed For
The Winter, and What Animals Do In The Fall.
We have been learning the letters Mm, Ss, Aa, Tt, and Pp. The
students do a wonderful job with the letter of the week. Please keep
working on the letters and sounds at home.
We have just finished working on positions in math. They are
able to identify above, below, top, middle, bottom, over, on,
under, inside, outside, right, and left. The students are doing an
excellent job with locating the positions. We will also be working
on number identification, counting sets, and writing numbers
1-10.

Gabe Dennis (Nov. 22nd). We hope you have a great day boys!

several recent and on-going initiatives at Jones Memorial Hospital. It was also the subject of an
education session held on November 4 for staff members of local school districts.
Jones Memorial is one of three local hospitals to receive a $14,000 grant from the New York

State Rural Health Network Development Program. Earmarked for two purposes - childhood
obesity prevention and employee wellness - the grant funds at JMH are being coordinated by

recent activities. At the annual Child Health and Safety Fair in October, JMH therapists

NOVEMBER IS AMERICAN DIABETES MONTH®

Olean General Hospital is offering a free community
Diabetes Health Fair
Olean, NY- 24 Million Americans have diabetes and 54 million
have pre-diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease,
stroke, blindness, and amputation, yet nearly 25% of people who
have it don’t even know it. This November, the American Diabetes
Association (ADA) and Olean General Hospital are spreading the
message during American Diabetes Month® to “Stop Diabetes”.
In an effort to provide preventive information and teach blood
glucose control, Olean General Hospital is holding a community
Diabetes Health Fair on November 17 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the
Education Center at 515 Main Street. The Diabetes Health Fair will
offer free blood sugar and blood pressure screenings, exercise
demonstrations, carbohydrate counting, OGH diabetes services
information, wound treatment assistance, foot care tips, sleep apnea
quizzes, dental care information, door prizes, giveaways and the
opportunity to talk to Diabetes Educators and other Olean General
Hospital department specialists.
