DETERMINE ACCEPTABLE EVIDENCE

Pre-Assessment: The Kahoot quiz will help me introduce the topic at the beginning of
the lesson, as well as allow me to gage their prior knowledge on the topic.
Formative: I will monitor their work as they complete the modified SOAPS worksheet.
Summative: The awareness projects that students create on day two will allow them to
show me what they have learned.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND ACTIVITIES

Day 1
1) Introduction (1-2 mins): We have briefly talked about how the ancient Romans
had many many slaves. Today we are going to talk about slavery that still goes on
today.
-Present lesson essential questions.

2) Activating Prior Knowledge/Pre-Assessment: Quiz from Kahoot (7-10 mins)
-I need to log into Kahoot and launch the quiz in order for it to generate the game
pin.
-Students go to kahoot.it and enter the pin generated by launching the quiz.
-I will briefly talk about each question after all the students have answered it.

Quiz Question Notes
1) How many slaves exist in todays world?
Answer: 21-30 million
-This is caused by overpopulation, poverty, and government corruption.
2) What is slavery?
Answer: All choices are correct.
-Unpaid forced labor, human trafficking, loss of free will, control under the threat of
violence are all aspects of slavery.
3) Where are most of the worlds slaves?
Answer: South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal)
-There are slaves in almost every country, but they are especially concentrated in the
countries of South Asia. Parts of Africa and South America also have large numbers of
slaves. Recent increases in human trafficking is bringing thousands of slaves to
countries in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
-Slavery is usually caused by a system called debt bondage where a person and their
family is held as collateral against a loan. Collateral is something, or in this case
someone, that you promise to give someone if you cannot pay back a loan. Because
they are collateral, their work does not repay the debt but belongs to the moneylender.
Unable to earn money independently, the family is unable to repay the illegal debt and it
is passed down from generation to generation, creating hereditary enslavement.
4) How much is the average cost of a slave?
Answer: $90
-One difference between historical slavery and modern slavery is the collapse in the price
of slaves. In the past the average cost of a slave is equivalent to $40,000 today. Now it
is $90 dollars, which makes it easier to buy slaves, put them under a tremendous abuse,
and easily dispose of and replace them.
5) How many slaves are trafficked into the U.S. each year?
Answer: 14,500 - 17,500
-The US government estimates that 14,500-17,500 people are trafficked into the US each year, so at
any given time there are at least 10,000 slaves in our country. Free the Slaves believes that further
research is needed to uncover the full extent of the problem in the US.
-The majority of victims are enslaved in domestic work, farm labor, or prostitution. Most are brought
from other countries into the US through force, fraud or coercion and then forced to work for no pay.
Others make their way into the US on their own but are then forced into slavery when they arrive -
tricked by offers of a good job. Still, other victims are born in the US. In addition, slave-made goods
flow into and through the US every day and make their way into our cupboards and closets.
6) What proportion of the worlds children, aged 5-17, are in forced labor?
Answer: 1 in 6
-Split the class into groups of six and have one student per group raise their hands so a
class gets a sense of this proportion. Ask them: Why is this statistic so surprising to you?
7) What percentage of children in forced labor are girls?
Answer: 90%
-Devaluation of females in many cultures and countries.
-Lower rates of school attendance for girls.
-Poor families may sell girls into factory work, domestic service, and prostitution.

3) Keynote Presentation Human Trafficking using Smokey Daniels reading
strategies p.198-199 (15-20 mins)
Slide 1: Remind them that those are all synonyms for slavery
Slide 2: Show Top 10 Facts video and have a short discussion afterwards about what
surprised them.
Slide 3: Show Slavery 101 video and have a short discussion afterwards about what
surprised them.
Slides 4-7: Spend 30 seconds on each photo
-I am going to show you some pictures of children in forced labor/slavery. As I show
you these pictures I want you to the person next to you what you think you are seeing,
what work is being done, and what questions you have.

This is a good time to take a break: (M/W 9:07, 10:27, 1:30) (T/TH 9:12, 10:36, 1:24)

Slides 8-13: Do reading strategy with this image.
-Now we are going to look closely at one image for a longer period of time (1 min/part).
Take out a piece of paper and divide it into four sections. I have cropped this picture into
four parts as well. As I show you each part write down notes, words, and phrases about
what you are noticing in that part of the picture. Then we will discuss what you wrote
down as a whole class.

4) SOAPS worksheet with first-hand account videos and class discussion (30
mins)

http://www.iabolish.org/enslaved/survivors.html

-Give them the modified SOAPS worksheet. They must choose 2 out of the 3
accounts and complete the worksheet. They may work in pairs to complete the
modified SOAPS worksheet.

5) Conclusion (1-2 mins): Review the lesson essential questions and have students
communicate their confidence in their ability to answer these questions with
thumbs up, in the middle, or thumbs down.

Day 2
Raising Awareness Project Options: 1) Create an informational wall in padlet 2)
Design a T-shirt and write a half page to one page paper explaining how their
design will help raise awareness about modern day slavery 3) Create an
informational I-Movie trailer that is at least 1-2 minutes long.

1) Give the students 10 minutes to finish their SOAPS worksheet.

2) Lesson 2 Introduction (5 mins): Present the lesson essential questions.
I know that some of you may have left class on Monday/Tuesday left a bit hopeless and
disheartened about the issue of of modern day slavery. You may think this issue is
bigger than you, but there is a lot you can do to help solve the problem. I want you to
read the short article about what one boy around your age did to help solve the problem
of modern day slavery.
-Have them read the Daniel Bileca story using the link in the Ancient Rome folder in
Schoology. http://endingslavery.com/eupdates/2013-07-July-eUpdate/
-When they are done reading ask them: So what are your thoughts after reading this
article? Daniel raised money to donate to the non-profit organization Free the Slaves.
So one way to have an impact on an issue is to raise money, but if you dont have money
to donate, raising awareness about an issue has significant impact as well. I have
designed three short projects that you can choose from to help you raise awareness
about this issue.

2) Explain the project options (5 mins): Have copies of the project descriptions and
rubrics available for them.

3) They will have the rest of the class period to work on their projects and half of Friday
as well.
