27 Years of Service
May 2014
Lei Ilima Girls Club Project
Share the Light of Soroptimist Service
The speaker at this session was Kaleo
Schneider from Smart Courage, also affiliated
with Courage House Hawaii. Her very impor-
tant topic was titled Smart Courage, Sex Traf-
ficking Modern Day Slavery.
SICO supported the Girls Club by donating
pizzas to fifteen hungry young women. Also
supplied were a few dozen cookies baked by
Rene Tokunaga. This time, supplying water
was not necessary as they now have a water
cooler with ice cold water. Members Susan
Lau, Maile Kanemaru, J ackie Pactol and guest
Cat Andres were there to hear the message
from Kaleo and help with serving pizza. The
girls did not need our help.
The subject was presented in
a very matter of fact manner
citing warnings in non-
subjective language and emo-
tion. Kaleos slide presentation
was easy to understand. SICO
members observed that the girls
were very attentive which was
also observed by Club Director
Shalei Aoki. The girls did not
hesitate to speak up and offered
some of their own insights.
The Club now has their own classroom.
SICO members observed that they need
better fans. Theyre not used to the Ewa
heat!

Aloha SICO Members!

Lets celebrate! Raise your glasses and
toast to our new Soroptimist District VI
Director, the ever effervescent, Ms. Lyn-
ette Lurbe!!! Lyn was recently elected in
a contested race at the Founder Region
Conference in San Ramon, Califor-
nia! Lets all support her as she embarks on
a two year term of new experiences, new opportunities, and
new challenges! Most of all, our club will be shining
brightly as the home of the new District Director! 2014-
2016 will truly be an amazing year!
Lets also thank the SICO members who represented
our Club at the conference: Secretary J ackie Pactol,
Past President Leona Soto, and Co-Treasurer Lyn Lurbe.
Please mark your calendar for J une 7
th
, 10:00 AM, for
our bi-annual Ehime Maru Memorial Clean-Up.
We are also looking forward to meeting our scholarship
Recipient, and more projects to help women and girls.
So if you know of any activity for SICO to support,
let me know in order for us to help in any way.
Looking forward to seeing you at our June 5
th
Installation
Of Officers Meeting!

Mililani High Schools
Community Council
The Community council asked Marilyn to be present at
their quarterly meeting to explain more about Soroptimists.
She and Jackie Pactol attended and were surprised that a
few in the audience had heard of Soroptimist. Marilyn gave
an overview of who we are and listed a few of the projects
that SICO had done.
Having just been a part of the presentation at Lei Ilima
Girls Club, Jackie also spoke about Sex Trafficking
Modern Day Slavery. This was to make more people aware
of the problem as it applies to school children.
One of the main reasons for their appearance was to ac-
knowledge the current SICO scholarship awardee. In the
second year of SICOs Community Action Scholarship, a
Mililani High School student has been awarded. Rachel
Yonamine will be presented with $5000 on May 17th by
Chair Marilyn Lee. She however, was off island at this time.
Several of the attendees stopped Marilyn and Jackie after
the meeting with questions about sex trafficking, the No-
zomi Project and wanting more information about Soropti-
mist. To their dismay, both women realized at this time,
that they had not touched on recruitment. Hopefully, SICO
will be invited again.
Our name in huge letters, but spelled incorrectly!

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

HALLOWEEN MASQUERADE
Save the date: October 26, 2014
For a fun time at: Ala Moana Hotel
Tickets: $125 each
Gold Tables: $2500tables of ten

As much fun as Halloween can be, the Committee encourages attendees to dress in Elegant Halloween Costumes. Masks
should be worn within the party room and not in public areas for securitys sake.
SO, that means Silent Auction time again. A suggestion was made to have SICO members contribute to theme baskets.
Since we are well ahead of time, as you travel and go about your shopping trips, think of adding to a pasta basket, a breakfast
basket, a baking basket, golf basket, and/or a gardeners basket or one of your own choice. For those who golf, win some
good prizes! Easier than it sounds but make a good effort! If you enter any other contests, consider the prize for the Silent
Auction! As always, crafters, your arts will be most appreciated. Unique items will make the baskets more valuable. All
items for the silent auction must have a minimum value of $50. Bring your donations to any meeting and J ackie will start
collecting them. Everyone, please pitch in for another successful Silent Auction to help improve the lives of women and
girls toward social and economic empowerment. Chair Lyn Lurbe will be keeping us current with this event.

GUESTS AT THE APRIL
MEETING
Five guests attended the April meeting. Violet Richardson
Awardee Marissa Lum and her parents made the trek all the
way over from the windward side. Suzanne Sullivan from the
SIA Fundraising Council and SIWFI member Denise Ridge
made their way to the meeting on the bus that took them almost
two hours! SICO members were impressed to have so many
distinguished guests all at one time.
