 Acción!09MAD
This new event of Acción!MAD that we present is lightly different from the
previous meetings since this time it will take place in four different venues for
three weeks: OffLim
mits, Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, La Casa Encendida,
Matadero Madrid,
This year, the contents of Acción!09MAD are structured round three main
frameworks:
PERIPHERIESS WITH NO CENTRE: among other things we owe globalization the
disappearance of a centre, of centres. Thus it is that there is a different look
from those peripheries without a central reference. A way of doing Performance
Art that has its own hub. Distances or belongings are not important anymore
and each point of view adopts its attitude precisely because of the freedom of
its difference.
PERFORMING SPACESS: many of the most interesting proposals on Performance
Art are not thought for the "white cube" of an art gallery or a conventional
scenic space, but for heterogeneous hybrid, public, private spaces. In this main
framework, the program has been established according to working spaces.
WE WOMEN,, YOU WOMEN,, THEY WOMEN: the importance of being a woman in
Performance Art is unquestionable and their contributions have enriched this
art genre in a significant way, and so we wish to dedicate an specific theoretical
as well as practical space to the Performance Art done by women.

Acción!09MAD
Esta nueva edición de Acción!MAD que ahora os presentamos tienen un
carácter ligeramente distinto a las anteriores puesto que se desarrollará en
cuatro sedes distintas durante tres semanas: Off Limits, Círculo de Bellas Artes
de Madrid, La Casa Encendida y Matadero Madrid.
Los contenidos de Acción!09MAD se estructuran este año en torno a tres
marcos de referencia:
PERIFERIAS SIN CENTRO: A la globalización le debemos, entre otras cosas, la
desaparición del centro. De los centros. Hay así una(s) mirada(s) diferente(s)
desde esas periferias ya sin centro. Una forma de hacer el Arte de Acción que
tiene en sí misma su eje. No importan ya las distancias ni las pertenencias y
cada visión se significa precisamente por la libertad de su diferencia.
ESPACIOS PARA LA ACCIÓN: Muchas de las propuestas mas interesantes de
Arte de Acción no están pensadas para el cubo blanco de la galería o el espa-
cio escénico convencional, sino para espacios heterogéneos, híbridos, públi-
cos, privados... En este marco de referencia la programación se establece en
función de los espacios de trabajo.
NOSOTRAS, VOSOTRAS, ELLAS: La importancia de la mujer en el Arte de
Acción es incuestionable y sus aportaciones han enriquecido este género de
manera transcendental; es por esto que queremos dedicar un espacio especí-
fico tanto teórico como práctico al Arte de Acción creado por mujeres.

“Mi educación como espectador ha evolucionado hasta el extremo de intentar
comprender e interpretar de una manera visual todo lo que me rodea. Al aso-
ciar, enfrentar o manipular imágenes u objetos se les adjudican nuevos signifi-
cados, se está codificando un nuevo lenguaje directo y efectivo.
La necesidad de comunicación ha hecho que mis criterios estéticos se hayan
ido modificando de una manera progresiva sin rupturas bruscas ni
excluyentes, lo cual no significa haber conseguido un método de trabajo. El
orden, la integración y la expresión tienen su valor, pero también lo tienen el
desorden, la desintegración y la inexpresividad.”

“My education as audience has developed to such an extent that I try
to understand and interpret everything around me in a visual way.
When associating, confronting and manipulating images or objects we
are giving them new meanings, a new direct and effective language is
being codified.
The need of communication has developed my aesthetic criterion
modifying it in a gradual way with no sudden or in an exclusive manner
which does not mean I have achieved a method in my work. Order,
integration and expression have their value, but also disorder,
disintegration and inexpressiveness do”.

“Mi nombre es Carlos Felices y desconozco la etimología de mi apellido.
Del arte espero la sorpresa, pero también el disfrute, por ello prefiero no ser
radical en mis juicios, pienso que me abre un abanico que no tendría de la
otra manera. El aporte no sólo lo hacen los genios, pues ellos también co-
pian de quiénes no lo son; todos hacemos el arte, la vanguardia la hacen las
interacciones y los intercambios de información no los individuos aislados.
Y por ultimo no creo en la globalización cultural, y por tanto tampoco en la
hegemonía de unas culturas sobre otras, ni mucho menos en aquellas que se
sienten paradigma y modelo a seguir, que solo restringen y empequeñecen las
posibilidades del conocimiento.”

My name is Carlos Felices and I am not aware of the etymology of my
surname (Happy).
From art I expect surprise and also enjoyment, that is why I prefer not to be
radical in my judgments, I think this opens a wide range of possibilities that
I would not have otherwise. Contributions are not only given by genius,
since they also imitate those who are not so, we all make art, avant-garde
is made through interactions, and interchanges of information are not done
by isolated individuals. Lastly, I do not believe in cultural globalization and,
therefore, I do not believe either in the hegemony of some cultures upon
others, much less those that think of themselves as the paradigm and
model to be followed, because they just restrict and minimize the
possibilities of knowledge.

la acción misma. Ella, la acción, se genera y nace en el lugar mismo; o a veces
una idea no realizada se transforma y adapta al espacio donde actuaré.
A partir de las coordenadas arquitectónicas, simbólicas y a la propia historia -
presente y pasado- del sitio elegido; intento crear una transformación per-
sonal con diferentes objetos, medios audiovisuales o con mi propio cuerpo
para trasmitirla a la sensibilidad y a la conciencia histórica de los especta-
dores.”

The place where I am going to do the performance is very important to
me, more even than the performance itself. The performance is
generated and born in the very space; sometimes an undeveloped idea
transforms and adapts itself to the space where I will do the
performance.
From the architectural and symbolical coordinates, and present and
past history of the place, I try to create a personal transformation
through different objects, audio-visual means or through my own body, so
as to transmit that to the audience sensitivity and their historic
consciousness.

El trabajo de John G. Boehme integra nuevas prácticas de forma transdisci-
plinar incorporando performances, escultura, fotografía, video, tecnologías
digitales e instalación.
Desde los años noventa John ha desarrollado una extensa carrera tanto den-
tro de Canadá como en otros paises; de Brasil a Chile y especialmente en
Europa donde ha participado en multitud de festivales de performances.
Además es profesor de la Universidad de Victoria y del Brentwood College
ambos en Canadá.

John G. Boehme's work integrates new practices of transdisciplines including
performance, sculpture, photography, video, digital technology and
installation.
From the nineties, John has developed a wide career in Canada
and abroad: from Brazil to Chile and Europe where he has taken part in
plenty of performance festivals. Besides, he is professor at the Victoria
University and the Brentwood College, both in Canada.

“Mi trabajo trata sobre nosotros como seres híbridos, cómo las culturas sub-
rrogadas toman cuerpo y se construyen a traves del proceso de la perform-
ance y proliferan hacia la posibilidad de la libertad cultural y política. La per-
formance no está hecha para servir a nada ni a nadie, sino que es un reite-
rado acto de resistencia contra la hegemonía cultural dominante que se ha
convertido en una máquina autoritaria que sistemáticamente oprime la liber-
tad individual y restringe la evolución de la creatividad humana. A través de
estas contradiciones espero articular mis propios sistemas de representación
y celebrar una humanidad que quiere desembarazar al cuerpo de su existen-
cia perpleja y devolverle su existencia plural.”

take shape and are built through performance proliferating towards the
possibility of cultural and political freedom. Performance has not the
purpose of serving anyone, it is a repeated act of resistance against the
dominant cultural hegemony that has become an authoritarian machinery
that systematically oppresses individual freedom and restricts the evolution
of human creativity. Through these contradictions I expect to articulate my
own systems of representation and celebrate a mankind that wants to free
their bodies of its perplexed existence to return them to its plural
existence.”

“Me quedo alelado si me preguntan qué es el Arte. Algo podría decir pero,
sinceramente, no hallo respuesta satisfactoria. En cambio, si me preguntan
por mi trabajo artístico en particular, de eso sí que puedo hablar. No lo voy a
hacer porque me aburre. Lo que sí os digo es que estoy cansado de mirar:
¡Qué pesadez mirar en el interior de uno mismo! Y la tiranía de mirar por el
mundo: No se debe mirar para otro lado. Al final, se queda uno mirando al
vacío... y nada. Otra cosa es el negocio del Arte.”

J feel bewildered when I am asked what art is. I could say something about
it but, sincerely, I do not find a satisfactory answer. On the other hand, if I
am asked about my artistic work in particular I can say a few things. I am
not going to because it bores me. What I would like to say is that I am tired
of looking: what a bore to look inside oneself! And then the tyranny of
looking around the world: we should not look the other way.
At the end, one just keeps looking at emptiness.. and nothing.
Another matter altogether is business Art.

“Trato de mantenerme lo mas abierto posible y no precondicionar las posibil-
idades que ofrece trabajar en un nuevo entorno. Este el el punto de partida.
Al mismo tiempo, me interesa encontrar situaciones que puedan generar cua-
lidades que no haya experimentado anteriormente.
Frecuentemente minimizo una imagen y entonces creo variaciones microscópi-
cas. Otras veces se generan situaciones mas complicadas pero siempre man-
teniéndose en una poética minimalista.”

“I try to be as open-minded as possible and not to be conditioned by the
possibilities offered working in a new environment. This is my starting-point.
At the same time, I am interested in finding situations that can generate
qualities that I have not experienced before.
Often I minimize an image and then create microscopic variations.
Other times some more complicated situations arose but always in a
minimalist poetical way.”

En su larga carrera como artista de performances, Esther Ferrer ha partici-
pado en un gran número de festivales tanto en España como en el extranjero
(Alemania, Italia, Suiza, Bélgica, Francia, Dinamarca, Noruega, Inglaterra,
Holanda, Polonia, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Cuba, Brasil, Tailandia, Japón,
Corea, etc...).
Ha expuesto su trabajo en diferentes galerías y museos, en 1999 fue uno de
los dos artistas que representaron a España en la Bienal de Venecia y en
2008 el Ministerio de Cultura de España le concedió el Premio Nacional de
Artes Plásticas.

In her long career as performance artist, Esther Ferrer has
participated in a great number of festivals in Spain and abroad
(Germany, Italy,Switzerland, Belgium, France, Denmark, Norway,
England, The Netherlands, Poland, United States, Canada, Cuba,
Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Korea...).
She has had exhibitions of her work in several art galleries and
museums, in 1999 she was one of the artists who represented
Spain at the Venice Biennial and, in 2008, the Spanish Ministry of
Culture awarded her with the National Fine Arts Prize.

Nezaket Ekici (Alemania/Turquía)

Vive y trabaja entre Berlín y Stuttgart (Alemania) Nezaket Ekici es una per-
former de amplia trayectoria internacional. Nacida en Turquía, vive en
Alemania desde 1973. Ha estudiado pedagogía e historia del arte y escultura
en la Maximilians Universitat y en la Akademie der Bildenden Künste de
Braunschweiss. Discípula de Marina Abramovic, cuya influencia puede
percibirse en la manera igualmente radical, casi hasta los límites de la capaci-
dad física, con que interroga su propia identidad.
Desde 2000 ha estado presente con su trabajo (performances, videoperfor-
mances, exposiciones e instalaciones) en multitud de ferias, galerías y eventos
internacionales.

KNezaket Ekici (Germany//Turkey)

She lives and works between Berlin and Stuttgart (Germany) Nezaket Ekici
is a performer with a wide international career. She was born in Turkey
and lives in Germany since 1973. She has studied Pedagogy, Art History
and Sculpture at the Maximiliams University and at the Bildenden
Künste Academy in Braunschweiss. She is pupil of Marina Abramovic whose
influence can be noticed in her similar radical way of performing, even up to
the limits of physical capacity, questioning her own identity.
From 2000 she has taken part in various fairs, art galleries and
international events

eight years although not as a regular activity.
She has taken part in performances meetings like Portes Obertes in
Cabanyal, in several collective performances in Valencia like the one
at the French Institute along with other members of the Sinberifora A.C.
Association, and in festivals like Nits d'Aielo i art in Aielo de
Malferit, Influxus in Malpartida de Cáceres, and this year she has
been at the Fem09 in Girona and PPP09 in Berne (Switzerland).

“El Arte de Acción, para mí, es tan anárquico que en gran parte está sujeto a
la libre interpretación de las sugerencias ofrecidas y/o lanzadas por el per-
former. No hay reglas para interpretar el arte de acción; piensa qué es lo que
te interesa cuando miras y puede ser que encuentres tu significado a una su-
gerencia que a otro pasará desapercibida.
¿Eres capaz de recrear una sugerencia más alla del significado ofrecido? ¿O
prefieres que te ofrezcan un discurso lineal, que te haga salir contento porque
lo has entendido?... ¿Y dónde queda el ritmo, el espacio, la tensión, el tiempo,
el sentir todo eso en el momento presente, si lo que quieres es sentarte y
ver...? Puede pasar aquello que esperas que pase, o puede pasar lo que no
esperas que pase... piensa dónde está tu límite.”

“For me, Performance Art is something so anarchic that the given
suggestions proposed by the performer are free to be interpreted.
There are no rules to interpret performance art; think about what you
are interested in when you look and you might find your own
meaning into the proposal that for some else will go unnoticed. Are
you able to recreate a suggestion beyond the meaning given? Or
you rather be offered a flat speech to make you feel happy because
you understood? Where would rhythm, space, tension, time and the
fact that it is present would remain if you just want to sit and look?.
Whatever you wish to happen may happen or may be happens what
you do not want to happen… think about where your limit is.”

Utiliza el cuerpo como un soporte flexible que reflexiona sobre el propio cuer-
po. Pero al pensar en el cuerpo, no se piensa en él como en un mero objeto,
sino que adquiere el significado de una travesía; a partir de la cual el cuerpo
conjuga dos dimensiones diferentes pero complementarias: Espacio y
Experiencia, gracias a las cuales le es conferida a la obra un sentido; el sen-
tido para el cual fue creada; lo que exige pensarlo no sólo desde lo exterior
sino desde dentro, es un auténtico ejercicio de reflexión o mejor dicho una
unión entre lo interior y lo exterior, que se entrelazan sin oponerse en un
lenguaje poético, a través del cual, el cuerpo se expresa libremente y habla sin
palabras, que son oídas por el espectador por medio de gestos, sonidos y
movimientos... susceptibles de transformar los hechos en un acontecimiento.

She uses her body as a flexible support that reflects about the body.
When thinking about the body it is not thought as a mere object but as
the meaning of a voyage; from there, the body combines two different
but complementary dimensions: Space and Experience, and thanks to
them the work acquires sense, the sense it was created for; this requires
to be thought not only from the outward but also from the inward, being
a genuine exercise of reflection or rather an union between the inward and
the outward that, entwined in a poetic language, the body expresses
itself without words, heard however by the audience through gestures,
sounds and movements… capable of transforming facts in an event of
some importance.

Cualesquiera situación o apoyo que utilice, su intención es romper la inmovil-

idad creando un espacio interactivo de imagen, sonido y presencia entre los
objetos y la gente, las imágenes y las palabras, e internet. O cómo recrear la
Alfombra Voladora, el Laberinto en movimiento continuo, realmente nunca
aquí o allí sino entremedias, siempre entremedias, nunca fijo, colocado,
inmóvil como una mariposa muerta en un museo. Desde los años ochenta, el
núcleo de su trabajo es la relación interactiva.

Whatever the situations and the props he uses, he aims at breaking away
from stillness by creating a space of visual, sound and body interactions
between objects, objects and people, images and words, and with the
internet. Or: how to cast again the Flying Carpet, or the Labyrinth, as so many
Perpetuum Mobile, in a perpetual motion, never realy here or there but
inbetween, always between, never settled, fixed, still, dead butterfly in the
Museum. Interactive intercourse is at the core of his work since the 80's.

the attacker as well as those of the victim, of the outstanding and
the outcast; unexpectedly she transforms herself from a diva into
a buffoon. In her performances alternates power and vulnerability;
and although she explores oppressiveness she also gives a feeling
of relief to the audience.”

Pepe Murciego y Roxana Popelka

Desde el año 2006 Roxana Popelka + Pepe Murciego realizan trabajos per-
formáticos conjuntos caracterizados por la conjugación de diversas disciplinas
artísticas (instalación, recitación literaria, vídeo, etc.), así como por la incor-
poración de diversos materiales de uso ordinario que adaptan al contexto de
la acción. Existe un predominio, en muchas de sus performances, de la com-
binación del texto hablado, junto con una temática basada en la vindicación de
lo cotidiano.

Since 2006 Roxana Popelka + Pepe Murciego perform projects together
being their main trait the way they combine various artistic disciplines
(installation, literary recitation, video, etc) as well as the using of daily
ordinary materials that they adapt to the context of the performance.
In many of their performances there is a predominance of a combination
of spoken text and themes based on the vindication of the daily objects
and situations.

España, Groenlandia, Holanda, Escocia y Alemania, de las cuales destacare-
mos las siguientes: En 2008 realizó la performance Samhain con el grupo
internacional de performance The Wolf and the Winter en la Live Art
Development Agency, Londres. En 2007 realizó Mundos Paralelos, El Atlantico
en el OCCC, Valencia y Mundos Paralelos, El Artico en el Festival Infr'action,
Sete Francia. El 2006 La Linea Fina, con el grupo internacional de perfor-
mance The Wolf and the Winter en The South London Gallery, Londres,
Inglaterra y en el Museo de l'Empordà en Figueres.

nerada justa que las ayuda al sostenimiento de sus familias.

El Encuentro Internacional de Poesía de Acción y Performance La Muga Caula
nace en el año 2005 de un hecho histórico: el 40 aniversario de una fotografía
que documenta la visita, el año 1965, de Marcel Duchamp al salto de agua de
La Caula. Joan Casellas, artista de acción que desde principios de los años
noventa estudia la relación de Duchamp con el salto de agua de La Caula y su
obra postuma "Etant dones" aprovecha el aniversario de dicha visita
duchampiana para organizar un encuentro artístico de arte efímero y concep-
tual que impulse la poesía de acción y la performance.

The International Meeting of Poetic Performance and Performance Art
La Muga Caula is born in 2005 from a historical fact: the 40th
anniversary of a photograph that documents the visit, in 1965,
of Marcel Duchamp to La Caula waterfall. Joan Casellas, performer
since the beginning of the nineties, studies the connection of
Duchamp and his posthumous work "Etant dones" with La Caula
waterfall and, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Duchampian
visit to this place, he organizes an artistic meeting of ephemeral
and conceptual art to promote Poetic Performance and
Performance Art.

Live art, an artistic discipline which "defies all
definition" is experiencing a remarkable renewal,
it is, however, still little known to the world at
large. To bridge this gap and strengthen the
position of new forms of live art in Europe, eight
cultural structures have come together as partners
in a five-year European project entitled "A space
for live art".
Through each partner's programming and the
different forms of exchange and co-productions,
dissemination, residences, international symposia
the diversity of the artistic approaches will be highlighted.
Meetings on theory and practice, the constitution of a critical corpus
written by professionals and documentation of projects in sound and/or
images will strengthen the reflexive and documentary aspect of live art.
There will also be room for mediation and transmission, through an
infiltration of the public area and a teaching strand, in particular in art
schools where young talents will be encouraged.

El Arte de Acción, como disciplina artística que "desafía
cualquier definición" esta experimentando una impor-
tante renovación, pero todavía es poco conocida por el
público. Para llenar este vacio y fortalecer la posición
del nuevo Arte de Acción en Europa, ocho estructuras
culturales se han comprometido en un proyecto
Europeo a cinco años bajo el título "A space for live art"
(Un espacio para el Arte de Acción).
A través de la programación de cada socio en este
proyecto y de las diferentes formas de intercambio:
coproducciones, diseminaciones, residencias, simpo-
siums internacionales...; la diversidad en la manera de abordar al Arte de
Accción será el plato fuerte de este proyecto.
Los encuentros teóricos, la constitución de un "corpus" crítico escrito por pro-
fesionales y la documentación del proyecto en imagenes y sonidos fortale-
cerán los aspectos reflexivos y documentales del Arte de Acción. Tendremos
también un espacio para los medios y para la transmisión a traves de la infil-
tración en el espacio publico y académico, especialmente a traves de las
Facultades de Bellas Artes donde los nuevos talentos deben ser alentados.
