Arts f r Learning

annual report 2006

... makes my spirit move.
Iyen Palmer,
Careers in the Arts participant

dear friend,
Thanks to an incredibly talented and passionate group of artists, staff, board
members and supporters, 2006 was a remarkable year for Young Audiences and
the people we serve. We provided 2, 175 arts experiences across the state
a 50 % growth in outreach!
What these numbers mean is that more children in our state are having experiences
like Iyen Palmer, a ninth grader who participated in an afterschool arts program we
offer in Baltimore city:
At frst I wasnt sure if I could drum, but the second day I was
drumming, hollering and getting down. And now I feel that I can
do anything. The drum makes my spirit move.
In 2006 we also changed our name. We are now Young Audiences Arts for Learning.
This change makes what Young Audiences stands for and the nature of our work an
essential part of our name.Arts for Learning! We believe together Young Audiences
(who we are) and Arts For Learning (what we do) is a perfect combination as we move
into the future, helping schools harness the power of the arts to better meet the
educational and social needs of our youth.
This future, thanks to our partners and supporters, looks bright for Young Audiences.
Not only did we eliminate our defcit in 2006, we did this while growing our operations
and outreach dramatically. Our budget has grown by 65% over the last two years and
in 2007 we will add three new staff positions.
In 2007 we will also launch a new program in partnership with the Maryland State
Arts Council and Arts Education in Maryland Schools (AEMS) Alliance, the Teaching
Artist Institute. This program will build the capacity of artists in our community to
contribute to student learning in and through the arts.
We are proud of our progress. We also realize we have a long and exciting road
ahead in order to realize our mission.
We invite you to join us on this journey.

Sincerely,
Eric Pripstein Stacie Sanders

rural initiative
Young Audiences aims to be more accessible to the rural
areas of the state. For example, we worked with board
member Jon Bauman and Allegany County Fine Arts Supervisor
Craig Schutz to coordinate a week-long tour of Bay Street
Brassworks through the Allegany elementary schools in the
Spring of 2006. This tour of twelve performances was supported
by the Maryland State Arts Council, Martins Market and the
Allegany School System. This tour received rave reviews:
You are really a gift to this little corner of the
world!; This performance was student friendly,
appropriately-paced, used Maryland Voluntary
State Curriculum concepts and presented a
high level of professional musicianship
this group truly made the music come alive.
access initiative
In 2006 we provided 832 deeply discounted and free music,
dance, visual arts and theatre experiences to underserved
schools and communities in Maryland. These experiences
sometimes serve as a childs only cultural experience for
the year and are made possible through restricted grants
and gifts. Last year, Young Audiences raised nearly $100,000
for this initiative.
teaching artist institute
Young Audiences partnered with Arts Education in Maryland
Schools (AEMS) Alliance and the Maryland State Arts Council
to develop a professional development program for artists
working in schools. This statewide training program launches
in January 2007 and will build artists capacity to deliver
arts learning experiences that better meet the needs of
todays schools and specifcally address state standards.
Special thanks to project funders: The William G. Baker, Jr.
Memorial Fund, Maryland State Arts Council, Sylvan Laureate
Foundation, and The Kennedy Center.
The Teaching Artist Institute will
ultimately enable community artists
to participate more fully in the work
of transforming education in Maryland
and will inject new energy and creativity
into our schools and communities
making them joyful places in which
to learn and live.

Advocate and Founder of AEMS Alliance
20 6 Highlights
artscape
For the second year, Young Audiences served as the sponsor
of Artscapes Family Performance Stage. We provided three days
of free performances and workshops by Young Audiences artists,
reaching thousands of children and families throughout the week-
end event and raising our visibility in the Greater Baltimore region.
careers in the arts extended day program
2006-07 will mark our second year partnering with the Academy
for College and Career Exploration (ACCE)-- an innovation high
school in Baltimore City to offer an afterschool program for 80
ninth grade students. Careers in the Arts offers students instruction
led by professional artists working in their feld and performing/
exhibiting opportunities in music, dance, visual arts and theatre.
It is a powerful sight to see our students learn-
ing how to sculpt, drum, act, and draw when these
creative talents are disappearing from our nations
schools. By having the Young Audiences program
we are able to provide a learning experience that
addresses the whole child.
Ivor Mitchell, Principal, ACCE
artworks
Grants from the Alison Rose Tunis Fund and the Creative
Baltimore Fund, allowed Young Audiences to bring nine of its
performing and visual artists into lower wealth schools and
neighborhoods in Baltimore to provide in-depth learning
experiences in the performing and visual arts. Each Artworks
experience culminated in a fnal community performance or
art exhibition. Windsor Hills, Medfeld Heights, Empowerment
Academy, Grove Park, Cross Country, and Commodore John
Rodgers were some of the schools that participated, with a total
of 2300 children benefting from Artworks.
Just to see the excitement on their faces the mo-
ment they touched the drum or they learned their
rst dance stepI could tell from their response that
this was an experience like none other theyd ever
had. They could not wait to share what they learned
with the whole school, parents and teachers -- and
it all came together at the sharing. I loved it. I loved
working with them. Many kept asking, Mr. Ssuuna
are you coming back again?

On June 17, 2006, Young Audiences held its annual fundraiser at Centerstage, taking 300 guests on a tour of
fve destinations that spanned the globe to experience food, drink, and Young Audiences performances. The
night culminated with a ceremony to honor leaders in arts education, a champagne and dessert reception,
and a live and silent auction. The $40,000 raised helps ensure the quality and accessibility of our programs.
We would like to thank the companies, foundations, restaurants, individuals, and artists who helped make
this years fundraiser a delightful globe-trotting adventure!
