Make sure to show all of your work for this assignment and to indicate the final answer with a conclusion statement where appropriate. Write your answers directly on the question sheet itself. Write in pen. Punnett squares may NOT be used. The assignment is due on Tues, Feb 26 th , 2013. Total marks = 15
1. A married couple has two children. The man is somewhat social, blood type A, and organized. The woman is somewhat social, blood type B, and organized. The gene controlling sociability is the S gene on chromosome 2 and it shows incomplete dominance with S being the allele for social and s being the allele for unsocial. The gene controlling blood type is the I gene on chromosome 9 and three different alleles exist: I A , I B , i. The gene controlling organization is the O gene on the X chromosome and it shows simple dominance with O (organized) being the dominant allele.
The couple has a daughter that is unsocial, blood type AB, and organized. The couple has a son that is social, blood type O, and disorganized. (6 marks total).
a) What is the genotype of the man? Be sure to distinguish between capital and small letters clearly. (1 mark).
b) What is the genotype of the woman? Be sure to distinguish between capital and small letters clearly (1 mark).
c) The woman becomes pregnant again and the couple find out they will be having a son. What is the probability that their son will be somewhat social, blood type O and organized? Show your work and explain your reasoning. (4 marks).

2. Consider the cross aa Bb Cc Dd ee x Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee. All of the genes are on genetically unlinked. What proportion of progeny will phenotypically resemble the first parent (i.e. the parent listed first in the cross)? (3 marks).

3. In Drosophila melanogaster (the fruit fly),forked bristles are caused by an allele (X f ) that is X linked and recessive to an allele for normal bristles (X F ). White eyes are caused by the allele (w) that is autosomal and recessive to an allele for red eyes (W). A female fly that is homozygous for normal bristles and homozygous for red eyes is mated to a male fly that has forked bristles and white eyes. The F 1 are intercrossed to produce F 2 . What will are the proportions of the phenotypes produced in the F 2 generation? Show your work. (6 marks).
