Some scholarships utilize our guidance office to publicize, distribute applications, and identify school
nominations for highly selective awards. Deadlines and essay topics printed in this list are accurate for
the 2012-13 school year and may be slightly different for future years. Scholarships are listed in order of
due dates to assist you in predicting when applications will become available throughout the year.

American Fire Sprinkler Association
Read the Fire Sprinkler Essay and take an online quiz between September 1

Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund
Numerous scholarships are available for students who choose to attend one of our nations Historically
Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Information is available in guidance or through your chosen

Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest
Win a full four-year tuition scholarship to a Florida college or university through the Florida Prepaid

AES Engineering Scholarships
You are not required to take engineering courses in order to be eligible. This award of $500 is intended to

Awards range from $5,000-20,000 and are based on financial need and a students demonstrated integrity

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards
Over 1,000 of the top volunteers from each state will be awarded $1000. Ten national winners will

Ron Brown Scholar Program
This program seeks to recognize African-American high school seniors who demonstrate academic
excellence, leadership potential, community service, and financial need. Most recipients have been in the
top five percent of their class and are deeply involved in volunteer efforts within the school and

University of Virginia: Jefferson Scholars Foundation
One school nomination is submitted by November 2

for this full scholarship. Selection emphasizes
leadership and scholarship. Applicants are evaluated on the promise they show for making a significant
contribution to the University community as students and to society at large as graduates.
Jan La Belle Scholarship
Applicants should be students with disabilities with plans to attend a college or vocational school.
Selected students receive up to $15,000. Information is available at the Family Network on Disabilities

First Freedom Student Competition
Students compete for awards of $2500 in this national essay contest related to first amendment rights.

Florida Students $ave Essay Contest
Students in each region of Florida will be awarded prizes from $50 to $250 for their winning essays on

SAE Engineering Scholarships
Students interested in earning a degree in engineering may qualify for one of the scholarships sponsored
by the Society of Automotive Engineers. Pick up an application in guidance to submit along with your
application for admission to a university.

AXA Achievement Scholarship Program
One high school senior from each state will receive an award of $10,000 with opportunities to compete
for national awards. Applicants must demonstrate achievement outside the classroom, ambition,
dedication, and respect for self, family, and community. Applications are available at www.axa-

KFC Colonels Scholars Program
Awards of $5000 will be offered to students with a minimum 2.75 GPA and demonstrated financial need.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest
Participant must be a U.S. citizen and a high school student. The competition includes prepared and
selected orations related to the U.S. Constitution. Local prizes range from $1000 to $2500 with national

University of Miami: George W. Jenkins Scholarship
Students planning to attend the University of Miami may be eligible for this full scholarship based on
financial need, a minimum 3.5 GPA, and the demonstrated ability to overcome adversity. Deadline:

Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program
One senior may be nominated for this $1000 award. Criteria include a minimum 2.8 GPA, leadership,

Elks: Most Valuable Student Scholarship Competition
This scholarship emphasizes academic achievement and leadership along with financial need. 500 awards

KEYS Scholarship

African American juniors or seniors may compete for the Grady-Rayam Prize in Sacred Music. Awards

University of South Florida: Kosove Society Scholarship
This full ride scholarship is available to those with a minimum 3.5 GPA, 1250 SAT or 28 ACT.

Young Entrepreneur Scholarship
Applicants must be nominated by an NFIB member (logo will be displayed by small business owners).

Anne Ford Scholarship
This $10,000 award is given to a senior with an identified learning disability. Financial need is also a

Sallie Mae Fund Scholarships
Designed for students with a combined family income of $35,000 or less, nearly half of these scholarships
are awarded to ethnic minority or physically disabled students. The online application becomes available

Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE)
Submit an essay on Freedom in Academia to win prizes ranging from $500 to 10,000. Check

*Order of the Eastern Star Book Scholarship
A book scholarship will be awarded to a female graduating senior residing in the Big Bend area based on

*Tallahassee Quarterback Foundation
Awards from $1,000 to $5,000 will be given in recognition of Leon County students who have had to
overcome severe obstacles in their lives. Applicants should have a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate
achievement in leadership and community/school service. Deadline: January 4

John F.Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest
Write an essay on an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1956.

*Florida Retired Educators Foundation
$3250 will be awarded to a student from our area interested in teaching. Financial need, achievement,
community service, and leadership will be considered. Deadline: January 9

Gates Millennium Scholars
Students must be African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific American or Hispanic
American. Minimum GPA is 3.3 with leadership demonstrated through community service or
extracurricular activities. Students must demonstrate financial need that meets Federal Pell Grant
eligibility criteria. In general, for a dependent student, this would mean a family income of $45,000 or

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program
20 college-bound students will be awarded $10,000 scholarships, renewable up to $40,000. Applicants
must demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Visit

*Tallahassee Community College: Student Ambassador Scholarship
Selected students receive 60 hours of tuition coverage in exchange for their service as a student
ambassador. Minimum GPA of 2.75, excellent communication skills, leadership ability, and commitment
are requirements. Application includes a one page essay describing your interest and qualifications for
the position of ambassador and two letters of recommendation. Apply online at

*Tallahassee Community College: Board of Trustees Scholarship
Three Leon High School seniors will be nominated to receive 60 hours of tuition coverage. The
minimum GPA requirement is 3.0 and students must be willing to provide three hours of service each
week as a Peer Supporter to a college department. Peer Supporters may be utilized to help students
register for classes, assist students in TCC fitness facilities, or to promote volunteer activities with other

University of North Florida
UNF offers a Guaranteed Scholarship to all students with a 3.5 GPA and a 1200 SAT or 26 ACT.
Guaranteed Scholarships begin at $8,000 and increase to $16,000 for higher GPA and test scores.

Ronald McDonald House Charities U.S. Scholarship Program
Scholarships are available for Asian American, African American, and Hispanic American students who
are exemplary role models in their communities and have the initiative to fulfill their educational goals.

Florida State University: Service Scholar Program
Ten to fifteen scholarships will be offered to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated excellence in

*Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
This is a local award from $400-1000, given to a minority senior. Application requires a 3.0 GPA, a letter

Florida International University: Golden Drum Scholarship
This scholarship will provide full tuition to African American students who plan to attend Florida
International University. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. Applications are available in guidance or

Kohls Kids Who Care Scholarship Program
Students who are outstanding young volunteers may be nominated at

*Tallahassee 25 Scholarship
Three area juniors or seniors will be selected to receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000.
Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least 20 hours of community service completed within

Arts for Life! Scholarship
Twenty five Florida seniors will each receive $1,000 for their accomplishments in the visual arts, dance,
drama, music, and creative writing. Submit an essay explaining, How the arts have positively influenced

Dixie Youth and Dixie Boys Scholarship
This scholarship is available to students who played on a Dixie Youth team at any time while age 12 or

FAMU: USDA Scholarships
Seven scholarships will be sponsored to cover tuition, books, room and board, use of a laptop and printer,
and fees! Recipients are also eligible for paid summer internships and immediate employment with the
USDA upon graduation. Agencies sponsoring these scholarships include: Agricultural Research Service;
Animal Plant Health Inspection Service; Forest Service; Natural Resources Conservation Service; and

University of Florida: John V. Lombardi Scholarship
We may nominate one senior for this prestigious scholarship. The University of Florida must be your first
choice school. Submit a one page essay describing your: academic achievements, community service,
extracurricular involvement, leadership, and evidence of moral character. Submit these by December 17

to Ms. Heinz. Nominee will then need to submit all application materials to UF by February 1

National Peace Essay Contest
Winners receive a trip to Washington D. C. and awards from $1000 to $10,000. The essay question
requests an analysis of transitions to democracy illustrated in two case studies. Further information is

Best Buy Community Volunteer Service Awards
1000 awards of $1000 will be made nationally. Applicants will be screened first on their level of
volunteer community service and the degree of its impact on the applicants life. Further information is

Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program
Sponsored by Monsanto and the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, 100 scholarships of $1500
will be awarded to students interested in pursuing any field related to agriculture. The student must have

Dr. Aura-Lee A. and James Hobbs Pittenger American History Scholarship
Awards are for seniors who will pursue an undergraduate degree with a concentrated study in American

William J. English Scholarship

The principal of each SACS accredited local high school may nominate one senior for each of 15
categories: Art, Athletics, Business, Career Technical, Drama/Performing Arts, English & Language Arts,
Foreign Language, Journalism/Media Productions, Leadership, Mathematics, Music, Public Speaking,
Science, Social Science, and Technology. A students record of community service is the most important
element of the application. School nominations and all accompanying materials will be submitted by

Davidson Fellows
Sponsored by the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, these scholarships range from $10,000-
50,000. Nominees must document a significant piece of work in mathematics, science, technology,

Scholarships are awarded to seniors who are dependents or descendents of workers who were injured or
killed in the course of their employment under the Florida Workers Compensation system, or are

American Legion General Scholarship
Student must be a direct descendent of a member of the American Legion Department of Florida, or a
deceased veteran who would have been eligible for membership. Parents must be Florida residents.

Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Scholarship

architecture, conservation, botany, forestry, marine biology, city planning, public sanitation, or an allied

In order to apply, you should be the son or daughter of a Marine on active duty or in the Reserve, or the
son or daughter of a former Marine or Marine Reservist who has received an Honorable Discharge,

active duty, reserve, or former US Navy Corpsman who is serving or has served with the US Marine

Female applicants, at least 16 years old, should demonstrate volunteer leadership, and a commitment to

Recipients must be seniors with written acceptance to an accredited 4-year college. Must show scholastic
