McCorkle was born in North
Carolina, and graduated from
University of North Carolina.
McCorkle has taught at UNC-
Chapel Hill, Tufts, and Brandeis.
McCorkle has received the New
England Booksellers Award, the
John Dos Passos Prize for
Excellence in Literature and the
North Carolina Award for
Literature. Five of her books have
also been named New York
Times notable books. Her
southern history can be seen in
many of her books, especially
since they are mostly set in North
Carolina.

lives of those in the Pine
Haven retirement facility,
located in Fulton, NC. This
novel brings forth not only the point of view of those
around the elderly, but also the elderly themselves
and how they feel about the world, which they have
left. Each of the residents puts their life into a few
important moments and events, which they have
experienced
The Cheer Leader is
about a young girl, who
falls in love with a guy,
and quickly becomes
reliant on him. So after
they break up she has lost her friends, and no
longer has anyone to lean on. As she goes to
college she has a break down and must go to
therapy. Through therapy she realizes that there is
more to yourself than just other people

been writing letters to the guy
with whom she had been
having an affair with before he committed
suicide, and many of the other residents of
Fulton, North Carolina
