Network Requirements
YoucanconnectmanynetworkprinterstoonePC.Themaximumnumberof
printersdependsonthecapacityofthenetworktodeliverdatatotheprinter.
Toinstallaprinteronanetwork,thefollowingcomponentsarerequired:
AnEthernetnetworkthatusestheTCP/IPprotocolandcanrunat100
megabitspersecond,alsocalled100baseT.Printersalsosupport10baseT.
AnEthernetcabletoconnecttheprintertothenetwork.AnEthernetcableis
notsuppliedwiththeprinter.
APCthatmeetsthePCRequirementsdescribedonpage1,andis
connectedtoandcommunicatingwiththenetwork.
USB Requirements
YoucanconnectuptoeightcardprinterstoaPCusingUSBcables.
ToinstallaprinterusingaUSBconnection,thefollowingcomponentsare
required:
AhighspeedUSBport.USB2.0isrequired.
AUSBcabletoconnecttheprintertothePC.AUSBcableissuppliedwiththe
printer.
APCthatmeetsthePCRequirementsdescribedonpage1.
IfyouneedtoconnecttwocardprinterstoaPCwithoneUSBport,useasingle,
independentlypoweredUSBhubtowhichyoucanconnectbothprinters.

TheENERGYSTAR

ratedpowersupplydetectstheinputvoltageandworks
withintherangestated.



TheprinterisENERGYSTARqualifiedonlywhenusedwiththeincludedpower
supply.
Secure Printing Requirements
Secureprintingconsistsofencryptingprintcommandsandcarddataand
transmittingtheinformationsecurelyfromthePCtotheprinter.Touse
encryption,yourprintermustsupportsecureprinting.Printersthatsupport
secureprintingareshippedwithsecureprintingenabled.RefertoBehavior on
page42formoreinformationonusingthePrinterManagerwebserviceto
specifyprintersecuritysettings.
WhenyouusetheXPSCardPrinterDriver,thedriverusesthemostsecure
printingprotocolenabledintheprinter.Formoreinformation,refertoyourcard
printersDriverGuide.

Prepare the Printer
Topreparetheprintertoprintcards,removeanypackingmaterial,loadblank
cardstockintotheinputhopper(optional),loadprintribbon,andloadacleaning
sleeveontotheprintcartridge.
Remove Packing Material from the Printer
1. Unlocktheprinterandopentheprinter
suppliesaccessdoor.
2. Removethepackingmaterialinserted
behindthemulticardhopper.
3. Closetheprintersuppliesaccessdoor.
Requiredonlyonprinterswiththeoptionalmulticardhopper.

Load Cards
Single Hopper
Ifyouareusingamanualfeedprinter,skipthisstepandkeepasupplyofblank
cardsclosetotheprinter.
Forprinterswithaninputhopper,
dothefollowing:
1. Opentheinputhopper.
2. Loadthecardsintotheinput
hopper.(Fanthecardsbefore
placingtheminthehopper
optional.)
Insertmagneticstripe
cardswiththestripe
downandtowardthe
rightsideoftheinput
hopper.
Insertsmartcardswiththesmartcardchipontoptowardthebackofthe
hopper.

Optional Multi-Card Hopper
1. Unlocktheprinterandopen
themulticardhopper.
2. Loadthecardsintothe
hoppers.
Theinputhoppersare
labeledH1throughH6.You

beforeplacingtheminthe
hoppersoptional.)
Insertmagneticstripe
cardswiththestripe
downandtowardthe
rightsideoftheinputhopper.

8 Installation
Load Print Ribbon
Loadtheribbonwhenyouinstalltheprinterandwhentheribbonrunsout.
1. Unlocktheprinterandopentheprintersuppliesaccessdoorontheoptional
multicardhopper.
2. Opentheprintercover.


3. Removetheprintribboncartridge.
4. Loadafullrollofprintribbonontothe
spindleclosesttothecartridgehandle.
5. Placetheemptyspoolonthespindle
withtheblackgear.
6. Windtheemptyspoolcounterclockwise
onefullturn.

Load the Cleaning Sleeve
Loadanewcleaningsleevewitheachnewroll
ofprintribbon.
Theprintershipswiththecleaningroller
spindleinstalledontheprintribboncartridge.
1. Removethecleaningrollerspindlefrom
theribboncartridgeandslidethespindle
intothecontinuouscleaningsleeve(a).
2. Placethespindlewithcleaningsleeveonto
theribboncartridge(b).
3. Removetheprotectivewrapperfromthe
cleaningsleeve(c).
Install the Ribbon Cartridge
Installtheassembledprintribboncartridgeintotheprinter.
1. Opentheprintercover.
2. Holdtheprintribboncartridgebythehandleandloweritintotheprinter
withthehandletowardthefrontoftheprinter.


3. Makesurethattheribboncartridgeiscorrectlypositionedintheguides.
4. Closetheprintercover(andthesuppliesaccessdoorontheoptionalmulti
cardhopper).Locktheprinter,ifnecessary.

Install Optional Equipment
Youcaninstalladditionalequipmentontheprinterdependingonyour
requirements.
Install a Large Output Hopper
Theoutputhopperincludedwiththeprinterholdsabout25cards.Theprinter
alsocanbeusedwithanoptionallargeoutputhopperthatholdsupto100cards.
Thelargeoutputhopperkitincludestwobasesectionsandthelargeoutput
hopper.Thetwobasesectionsarethesame;turnthembacktobacktousethem.
Eachbasehashooks(markedbygreencircles)toattachittotheprinterbase.
Youcanremovethestandardhopperandattachthelargeoutputhopperwithout
usingtools.

Dothefollowingtoattachtheprintertothebases,andtoinstallthelargeroutput
hopper.
1. Positiononebasesectionwiththeopenendfacingthebackoftheprinter.
2. Lifttheprinteroverthebasesection.
3. Alignthetabsinthebasewiththeslotsinthebottomoftheprinter.
4. Pushuptoinsertthefourtabsintheslots,andthenpushthebaseforwardto
lockittotheprinter.
5. Positiontheotherbasesectionwiththeopeningfacingthefrontofthe
printer.
6. Pushuptoinsertthefourtabsintheslotsandthenpushthebasebacktolock
ittotheprinter.
7. Removethe25cardoutputhopperfromtheprinter.Slideitout,similartoa
drawer.
8. Slidethe100cardoutputhopperintotheassembledbaseandprinter.Make
surethatthetabs(shownincirclesintheillustration)securethehopperto
theprinter.
HINTS&TIPS
Thebasesectionscontaindrawers,usefulforholdingcards,cleaningswabs,
orotherfrequentlyuseditems.Thedrawerscanbeopenedfromeitherthe
leftorrightsideoftheprinter.
Thebaseandlargeoutputhopperremainattachedwhentheprinterismoved
orcarried.

Install the 200-Card Input Hopper
Thestandardinputhoppercanholdabout100cards.Someprinterscanbe
upgradedtousea200cardinputhopper.
The200cardinputhopperkitincludesthelargerhopperwithanattachedcover.
Thestandardhopperiseasilyremovedandthe200cardhoppercanbeinstalled
withoutusingtools.
1. Opentheinputhopper.
2. Pressthereleasetab
locatedonthebackwall
ofthehopperwhile
liftingthehopperupand
offtheprinter.
3. Installthe200cardinput
hopperbyaligningthe
tabswiththeslotsonthe
printer.
4. Pushthehopperdown
untilitclicksintoplace.
5. Loadupto200cardsin
thehopperandclosethe
hoppercover.The
printerisreadytoprint
cards.

Install the Optional Cable Lock
Thecablelockisauserinstalledfeaturethatdoesnotrequirespecialtoolsto
install.ThepackagecontainsaKensingtonlockwithkeys,instructions,anda
metalsecurityplate.Thesecurityplateisinstalledintheprinterandisdesigned
toaccommodatetheTbaroftheKensingtonlock.
1. Preparetheprinterbyinstallingthemetalsecurityplate:
A. Tiptheprinteronitsrightside.
B. Locatethesecurityplate
receptacleontheundersideof
theprintertowardthebackleft
side.
C. Insertthesecurityplateintothe
receptaclewiththeopenend
towardtheprinter.
2. Followtheinstructionsincludedwiththelocktocompletetheinstallation.
Use the Card Printer Driver
TheCardPrinterDriverusesMicrosoftXPSprinttechnologytosupportprinting
fromcurrentlyavailableapplications.Italsosupportsapplicationsdeveloped
usingsupportedoperatingsystems.

Use OpenCard Data Format
TheOpenCardDataFormatoptioncanbeenabledatthefactoryorthrougha
fieldupgradeonanSD/CDseriescardprinter.Formoreinformationaboutsetting
uptheOpenCardoption,refertotheSDandCDSeriesCardPrintersOpenCard
DataFormatGuide.
TheOpenCardData FormatisnotsupportedbytheCardPrinterDriver.

Colorprintribbonisavailableinfullpanelandshortpanelstyles.
Full-Panel Ribbon
Fullpanelcolorprintingusesaprintribbon
withthreecolorpanels:Y(yellow),
M (magenta),andC(cyan).Theribbonalso
includesaK(black)panelandaT(topcoat)
panel.TheprinterappliestheYMCcolorpanelstothecardfirst,printsblack
componentsusingtheKpanel,andthenappliestheT(topcoat)toprotectthe
colorimagefromdamage.
Short-Panel Ribbon
Colorprintribbonalsoisavailableinashort
paneloption.Thecolorareaforshortpanel
ribbonis1.57inches(40mm).Theymcpanelsof
shortpanelribbonareapproximatelyhalfthe
lengthofafullcard.(Inthisguide,ymcinlowercase,insteadofYMC,refersto
shortpanelcolorpanels.)
Whenyouprintwithshortpanelprintribbon,youdefinethelocationofthecolor
areainthecarddesign.Colorprintingbeginswhenthesoftwaredetectsacolor
pixelandcontinuesforthelengthoftheymcpanels.
Split-Ribbon Color Printing
Splitribboncolorprintingletsyouusefewerribbonstoprintcardsincolor.Itis
availableonlywiththeCardPrinterDriver.RefertoyourprintersDriverGuidefor
informationonhowtospecifysplitribboncolorprinting.
Splitribboncolorprintingusesasingleribbonpanelsetfromafullcolorribbon
toprintbothsidesofacard,ratherthantwoorthreepanelsets.Theribboncan
beafullpanelorshortpanelcolorribbon.Theorderinwhichthecolor,black,
andtopcoatsectionsofthepanelsetareusedtoprintthecarddependsonthe
typeofribboninstalledintheprinterandthesplitribbonoptionselectedonthe
driverPrintingPreferenceswindow.
Mosttypesofcards,includingcardswithmagneticstripesandsmartcards,canbe
printedusingsplitribbonprinting.Optionsforcolor,monochrome,andtopcoating
areavailablewhenyouusesplitribbonprinting.

Manage Color
ColormanagementistheprocessofmakingcoloronthePCmonitorandprinted
cardappearassimilaraspossible.Forcolormanagement,thecardprinteruses
thesRGBcolorstandard(standardRed,Green,andBluecolorspace).
Print Text in Color
Theprintercanprinttextinanycolor.Smallcharactersarelikelytobemore
readableiftheyareformattedasblackandprintedwiththeblack(K)panel.The
printersupports6pointorlargertextwithasansseriffont.
Print Graphics in Color
Theprinterproducesfullcolorimagesfrommosttypesofgraphics.Itcanuse
BMP,JPEG,TIFF,andPNGfileformatsforphotosandlogos.
Vectorgraphics,suchasWMFandSVGfiles,havecomponentssuchasshapes
withlinesandfills.Componentsdefinedasblackinthefilenormallyprintwith
theKpanel.
Becausetheprinterusestheprintribbonpanelsinsequence(YMCfirst,thenK),
blackimagescanprintovercolorgraphics.Forthebestappearanceofcolor
graphics,ortopreventbackgroundsthatareblackfromprintingovercolored
images,useacolorthatappearsblackbutisnot,sothatallpartsofanimage
printwiththeYMCpanels.Forexample,intheRGBcolorspace,0, 0,0isblack
(andprintswiththeKpanel),but0,0,5isnotblack(andprintswiththeYMC
panels).
Types of Color Images
Cardscanincludebothcolorphotosandacolorlogoortext.Thelogoisusually
thesameoneachcard,andthephotoisunique.Followtheseguidelinestoobtain
thebestresultsforprintingbothlogoandphotos.
First,checkthecolorqualityofthephotos:
Adjusttheimagecapturesystemtogetthebestqualityphotos;workwith
distance,lighting,andcamerasettingstoobtainconsistent,highquality
photos.
Evaluatethequalityofprintedphotosaftertheimagecapturesystemis
optimized.

Next,evaluatetheothercolorareasofthecard,suchastextorlogo:
Checkyourcardproductionapplicationforsettingsthatcanhelpimprove
theprintedcoloroftext.
Useimageeditingapplications(suchasAdobePhotoshop)tochange
