Climate One conversations come to KRCB-TV
We are pleased and proud to announce that
KRCB’s collaboration with the Common-
wealth Club of California in their Climate
One program, which began on radio last
summer, expands to television this month.
In keeping with the Club’s illustrious history,
they are now hosting thoughtful and important conversations focused on climate change
every week. These are recorded, and then move to our air.
Since July, we have carried these debates and discussions on KRCB- FM, on Thursday
evenings at 7 pm. (See the listings for December radio broadcasts below). Our first television
broadcast was November 29,when Chevron CEO Dave O’Reilly and Sierra Club Executive
Director Carl Pope met for the first time ever to discuss powering America’s future. We’ll
continue this new television “tradition” on Sunday, December 20 at 11 am with Stanford
University’s provocative Professor of Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies, Stephen
Schneider, as he reminds us of the importance of research in moving towards a greener
economy. The hour is rounded out with Professor David Orr of Oberlin talking about the
rise of the green city.
KRCB is in discussion with the Commonwealth Club about wider distribution of this
series to help meet the need for trusted information in the climate discussion.
KRCB-FM’s Climate One radio broadcasts for the month will feature these subjects
and speakers:
Thursday Dec. 3 at 7 pm – Saving Civilization is Not a Spectator Sport
With Lester Brown, President of the Earth Policy Institute.
Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7 pm – On The Road to Copenhagen
With Tim Flannery, Chairman of the Copenhagen Climate Council and author of Now
or Never: Why We Must Act Now to End Climate Change and Create a Sustainable Future.
Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 pm –What’s Science Got to Do with Climate Change?
With Stephen Schneider, Professor of Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at
Stanford University.

KRCB in the community
Go Green with KRCB
Like many other environmentally aware organizations, KRCB is
doing our part to preserve the environment. We began with a
recycling program in our offices and studios, expanded to the
production of the nationally distributed, award-winning program
Natural Heroes, and continued with the replacement of KRCB’s
landscaping to help conserve water.
Now we are asking you, our members, to join with us. If you already
regularly communicate with us through e-mail or regularly renew your membership
online, what could be more natural than extending those activities to include getting your
Open Air online at KRCB.org
Right now, KRCB mails out 6000-plus paper copies of Open Air each month; you can
imagine how much energy and precious planetary resources that requires. To reduce this
environmental footprint, we will be curtailing these mailings by as many individual copies
as possible. You can opt out now, by phone or by email, but after January, if you wish to
continue getting Open Air by mail, you’ll have to tell us that. Otherwise, we are asking you
to forgo your paper copy of Open Air in favor of the online version.
Right now, you can see how convenient it is to get a copy of the current Open Air by
going to www.krcb.org/openair. You can also go directly to www.krcb.org and look for the
Open Air links in the upper right of the KRCB home page. Once there, you can download
or print a copy of our monthly KRCB program guide. Please take this opportunity to help
KRCB Go Green by accessing your copy of Open Air on line today.
KRCB, your community, and your planet will thank you.

Dear Member,
December brings two local productions to the air, both a result of partnerships with
strong community organizations.
The partnership with Climate One, a project of the Commonwealth Club, is described
on page 3. We here at KRCB believe that the information presented in this series is
critical to our understanding of the debates on climate change issues. Too often
commercial media presents “information” in an hysterical, misleading, dis-information
style, as fed to them by special interest groups. You will find on KRCB Television and
Radio just the opposite —the information you need to understand the range of the
debate and to make up your own mind.
Another wonderful partnership continues to grow with Community Action Partner-
ship (CAP) of Sonoma County. On December 28, catch the special
produced by CAP teen leaders along with KRCB’s Voice of Youth
team. Our young citizen journalists wanted to examine the impact of
the economic crisis, close to home. Not only did the teens learn all
aspects of video production (and you will be able to see their work),
but we are consciously involving these youth in difficult community
issues which we must all solve together. That is the stuff of great
community collaboration and you help make it happen.
Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,
Nancy Dobbs
President and CEO

NOVA: Darwin’s Darkest Hour
This program tells the story of the extraordinary human
drama that led to the birth of the most influential scientific
theory of all time. Acclaimed screenwriter John Goldsmith
brings to life Charles Darwin’s greatest personal crisis: the
anguished decision over whether to “go public” with his
theory of evolution. Darwin, portrayed by Henry Ian Cusick
(Lost), spent years refining his ideas and penning his “Big
Book,” On the Origin of Species. Yet, daunted by looming
conflict with the orthodox religious values of his day, he
resisted publishing—until a letter from naturalist Alfred
Wallace forced his hand. In 1858, Darwin learned that
Wallace was on the brink of publishing ideas very similar to
his own. In a sickened panic, Darwin grasped his dilemma:
To delay publishing any longer would be to condemn all of his work to obscurity—his
voyage on the Beagle, his adventures in the Andes, the gauchos and bizarre fossils of
Patagonia, the finches and giant tortoises of the Galapagos. But to come forward with his
ideas risked the fury of the Church and perhaps a rift with his own devoted wife, Emma,
(portrayed by Frances O’Connor,) who clung to a devout, orthodox view of creation. This
program is a moving drama about the birth of a great idea seen through the inspiration and
personal sufferings of its brilliant originator. Monday, December 21 at 8 pm

Year-End Deadline For IRA Charitable Contributions

Time is running out for individuals age 70½ or older
to make charitable contributions from their IRA this
year. The deadline is December 31, 2009. Until then,
individuals over age 70 ½ can donate up to $100,000
from their IRAs to charities, tax free. Before this year,
such charitable distributions were applied to the tax-
able Required Minimum Distributions that IRA
owners in this age group were required to take.

Congress suspended age 70½ Required Minimum

Distributions for 2009 but not the charitable distribu-
tion from an IRA. So someone who is considering making a charitable contribution can
still do so with their IRA funds. As long as the distributions made directly to the charities,
they will not be reported as income on the individual’s tax return. Of course, individu-
als should consult with their tax advisor regarding their specific situation in making these
decisions.

If you have an interest in supporting KRCB with a direct transfer from your IRA please
contact Nancy Dobbs at KRCB at 707-584-2002 or email at nancy_dobbs@krcb.org

The Nerve—exploring how music affects the brain
Music is a constant in every culture around the globe. But where
does the urge to sing or dance originate? And how does music
come to have such power over our moods and emotions? Join
host Jowi Taylor as The Nerve continues its exploration of these
melodic lines of inquiry, Tuesdays at 7 pm.
Dec. 8 – Enchanted, Entranced: Music & Spirituality
In Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and
every minor religion around the world, music has been used as
a tool to elevate the spirit or unite the faithful. Many cultures
consider music to be a gift from the gods, but what makes it have
such power over our spirits?
Dec. 22 – myTunes: Music & Identity
Today, it seems, everyone has the opportunity to create their very own personal soundtrack
to their lives. Music plays an integral part in everyone’s identity, regardless of class, race,
religion, education, gender, or sexuality. In fact, it’s got everything to do with class, race,
religion, education, gender and sexuality.
Dec. 29 – Sentimental Journey: Music & Emotion
Some music expresses joy; other music expresses sorrow. It can affect our emotions and
make us happy or sad. In a way, music is like a drug, used to enhance the effect of dramatic
entertainment and evoke moods in an audience. Is there a recipe composers can use to
achieve these ends?

A Celebration of the Jazz Accordion on
Jazz Connections
A celebration of what? Most jazz fans don't even realize there is
such as thing as jazz accordion. The accordion has never played
much of a role in the jazz community until recently, but the old
squeeze box has proved itself the ideal instrument for impro-
visation. Today jazz musicians on both sides of the Atlantic are
embracing the many varieties of accordion, and finding ever more
creative ways of employing them in the jazz idiom.
The accordion’s jazz debut came in the dance halls of 1930s Paris,
where accordion-led musette bands were one of Django Reinhardt's
earliest musical venues. Today, the Gypsy jazz world has incorporated the accordion into its
music, and a number of remarkable virtuoso accordionists play Django's music. There are
Norwegian, French, Argentine and American accordion players who have brought a entirely
new sensibility to improvised music.
If you've never been a fan of accordion music because you don't appreciate Tex-Mex or
polka, fear not. The jazz accordion is an entirely new experience, and guaranteed to change
your mind about the instrument.
Join Larry Slater, Sonoma County's Jazz MD, and his special co-host, fellow accordion
fanatic Joe Alesi, for a very special Jazz Connections, December 12th at 8 pm

Flashback Heads Home For The Holidays

Whatever your holiday traditions may be, they often center around
home and family. In recognition of this season when the far-flung
members of the household reconvene, Flashback celebrates with a hour
of songs about homeward journeys, and the destination itself. We’ll
hear from Steve Miller, Fleetwood Mac, Stephen Stills, Ten Years After, Carol King and The
Beatles… just for starters. Tuesday Dec. 1, at 7 pm.

Twisted Christmas comes ‘round again

In a dangerous world full of chaos and uncertainty, it’s good to know
that there are some things we can still count on.Twisted Christmas Live
is one of those things, returning again for its seventh unpredictable
year.
This offbeat annual lit-comedy-variety show features outrageous
short stories about survivalist gingerbread cookies, snowmen from the
Twilight Zone, aliens at a Christmas party aboard the Enterprise, Skid
Row Santa Clauses, a Christmas letter from Eeyore and more.
Readers include comedian Will Durst, writer, cookbook author
and Mouthful host Michele Anna Jordan, woman-of-a-thousand-
voices Debi Durst, and actor Tim Kniffin, with a musical tribute
to Weird Al Yankovic by accordionist Renee De La Prade
The performance takes place one night only on Saturday,
December 5 at 7:30 pm., at The Glaser Center, 547 Mendocino Ave.,
Santa Rosa, where it will also be recorded for broadcast on KRCB-FM.
You can hear that recording on Radio 91 on Christmas eve at 7 pm.

Outbeat Now! recognizes community service groups.

This month on Outbeat Now! Jeff Basham, Joel Bellagio, and Greg Miraglia will honor
several long-time community organizations serving the LGBT community in the North Bay,
including Face to Face, PFLAG, and Positive Images. Outbeat Youth will profile Positive
Images as they celebrate 20 years of support for LGBT youth in Sonoma County.

A Special Opportunity
There are so many things to love about this time of year.
The crispness of the air, the rich texture of holiday
decorations, and the wonderful feelings shared with friends
and family. Supporting all of these seasonal
delights are the things that bring richness and meaning
to our lives.
As a member of our family of friends and supporters, I
know that you consider KRCB to be a part of this richness
and meaning throughout the year.
That is why I am asking you, during this special time
of year, when the need for support is so important,
to take a moment to provide an additional gift to
KRCB, a gift above your regular contribution.
An additional gift of $100, $75, or $50 assures
that KRCB Television and Radio will not only meet your listening and viewing needs
though out the year, but will be able to exceed them.
Mail your tax-deductible contribution today or give our membership department a call
at 584-2018. You’ll hear and see your dollars at work every time you tune in to KRCB.

KRCB Volunteer of the Month - Mick Aguilera

Eight years ago, Mick Aguilera responded to an
ad in the Bohemian for volunteers at KRCB’s pledge
drives and live auction. He started out answering
phones during membership drives and then au-
ditioned to be an on-air auctioneer. It was all but
assured that he would be selected given his extensive
background in acting, including ten years in New
York prior to moving to Sonoma County and work-
ing with the Pegasus Theatre in Monte Rio. Mick’s
quick wit, enthusiasm and dedication led to his
“promotion” to the position of Auction Host.
During our October 2009 Wine and Epicurean
Auction, Mick brought yet another level of expertise
to KRCB: having worked in tasting rooms and host-
ed special events at several Sonoma County Wineries, he provided valuable assistance
to the auction team in procuring premier wines. It also helped that he could personally
attest to the quality of the wines, compelling many bidders to reach a little deeper in their
pocket to help KRCB.
In addition to volunteering at KRCB, Mick has co-hosted fundraising events for Guide
Dogs of the Blind for the past 13 years, and currently is “hosting” six little puppies—
future guide dogs—in his San Francisco home. He is co-owner of Carmichael Salon
(www.carmichaelsalon.com) in San Francisco, but don’t be surprised if you run into him
hosting other benefits in the bay area. We can’t thank you enough, Mick, for supporting
KRCB in so many ways during the past eight years, and we honor your other volunteer
efforts as well—including raising a litter of six assistance puppies!
