Sixth Grade Chocolate Project

This project is designed to familiarize each student with research facilities and processes
which will be used during their academic careers. Expertise will be demonstrated by a 5
page project detailing certain aspects of chocolate and involving 4 specific areas with a
short class presentation. Each student will be given approximately 2 weeks to complete
the written assignment, due November 5th. Some class time will be provided for the
student to use school resources and work on the assignment but work outside class will
be necessary for completion of the project.

Page 1—TITLE PAGE-- This should give the title, the student’s name, and the name of
the class. EXAMPLE:

Page 2 — The History of Chocolate – This page will also be used as the requirement
for Mrs. Deaton’s project. When the student completes this page they should make a
copy to turn in on November 2nd to satisfy the math project requirements. This page
will answer the who, what, when, where, and why of chocolate’s origins and popularity.
The student will have 5 paragraphs each explaining one of the questions listed above.

Page 3 -- Chocolate Facts-- The student must list 15 facts that are useful in explaining
and understanding how chocolate became one of the worlds most popular treats. The
following facts must be covered among any others the student chooses to include in the
15 listed:
World Production / Value / Types /Additives / Major Manufacturers / Basic
Nutrition / Other Uses / {label each of these facts with the appropriate heading}
The 8 remaining facts should be fun and interesting to the reader.

Page 4 – Artistic Interpretation: This page allows for individual student originality.
The student will create either:
A -- An advertisement for Goody - Good - Good chocolate candy.

B -- A chart / graph detailing some aspect of chocolate.

Page 5 -- Source Page— IMPORTANT: This page will list the sources the student uses
and quotes in the completion of the written assignments.

Students TAKE NOTE: If you directly quote, paraphrase, or use information from a
specific source, place a number corresponding to the source in parenthesis at the end of
the sentence in the essay itself. Example:

Sample Quote or paraphrase from book used in essay:

“North Carolina’s population is 7, 3243, 000”. (1)

Sample Quote or paraphrase from internet in essay:

“Except for the swamplands and the steepest mountain slopes, essentially all of the
present woodland in North Carolina has been farmed and abandoned in the past.” (2)

Grading: Grades will be evaluated according to the completeness of the requirements of

the project as listed above. This project counts as 25% of the student’s Second Quarter
Grade.

Points will be deducted for incompleteness of required information, visual attractiveness,

(messy, torn, folded papers) or late papers (each day past due date will result in 10 %
reduction in grade).

The presentation before the class should be no longer than 3 minutes and include facts
and information the student learned about chocolate plus a presentation of the student’s
Artistic Interpretation.
