rotated through 2 about the y-axis. [3]

10. The diagram shows the graph of f ( ) y x = , where A(0,2) is a point of intersection
with the y-axis and B(-2,0) is a minimum point as well as a point of intersection

11. In preparation for a marathon, two athletes, Albert and James embark on
separate training programmes. The details of their training programmes are as
follows:
Alberts
programme
He runs 10 km on the first day of his training programme. On
each successive day after the first day, he increases the distance
run by 0.25 km.
J ames
programme
He runs 10 km on the first day of his training programme. On
each successive day after the first day, he increases his running
distance by 2.5% of the distance run in the previous day.

The two athletes start their training on different dates. Albert starts his training on
1 J uly while J ames starts his training on 10 J uly. There are 31 days in the month
of J uly.

(ii) Find the first day on which J ames runs a longer distance than Albert. [3]

Each athlete will complete his training programme once his accumulated running
distance, starting from the first day of his training, exceeds 500 km.

(iii) Find the number of days Albert will take to complete his training
programme. [2]
(iv) Suppose Albert completes his training on a particular date. How many
more days after this date will it take for James to complete his training? [2]

12. (a) After the civil war, de-mining was carried out by the United Nations
peacekeepers to remove land mines planted in Country A. The land mines
are de-mined at a rate inversely proportional to the number of land mines
remaining. In addition, due to accidental detonation caused by the local
community and wildlife, the number of land mines is decreasing at a rate
of one-eighth of the land mines remaining.
(i) If x (in thousands) is the number of land mines remaining at time t (in
months) after the war ended, show that

are constants and k >0. [4]
(ii) There are 3000 land mines before the de-mining work starts and after 1
month, 2000 mines are left. Find the time required to remove all the
land mines in Country A. [3]
